The head of policy planning at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Eran Etzion, who was to serve as the deputy ambassador at the Israeli Embassy in Washington starting in October, was suspended about a month ago. His appointment was placed on hold pending an Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) probe into alleged misconduct.
Officials at the Foreign Ministry say that Etzion's appointment has not changed. With the exception of Director-General Rafi Barak, though, no one inside the ministry has been told what the allegations against Etzion are.
According to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yigal Palmor, "Etzion's departure to the U.S. has been postponed for personal reasons."
The Shin Bet declined to comment.
