Professor David Newman, dean of the Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, will receive on Thursday from Queen Elizabeth II the title "Officer of the Order of the British Empire."
Newman is being recognized for his contributions to higher education and academic relations between Israel and Britain.
Newman was raised and educated in Britain. He studied at the University of London and Durham University. He has lived in Israel since 1982 and has worked at Ben-Gurion University since 1987. In 1997, he helped found Ben-Gurion University's Politics and Government Department. He was appointed to his current position three years ago. Recently, he was chosen to serve another three-year term.
Newman is one of the most prominent advocates of academic cooperation between Israel and Britain. He is also a strong opponent of academic boycotts against Israel.
"It is a great honor for me to receive this title," Newman said. "Promoting scientific partnerships between Israel and Britain is a matter of great importance which proves that science crosses the boundaries of the conflict."
"Scientific cooperation serves all of humanity and does not differentiate between people because of ethnic, national or religious traits."
