After eight days of fighting, tense cease-fire appears to hold

Sporadic rocket fire into Israel continues several hours past 9 p.m. deadline Wednesday, but ceases at midnight • Air force halts all activity in Gaza • If truce holds for 24 hours, indirect negotiations over terms will commence.
