A Palestinian teenager was shot and killed in a clash that erupted on Tuesday between young Palestinians and Israeli soldiers in the Palestinian village of Budrus near Ramallah, intensifying tensions in the West Bank. Palestinians have claimed that the teenager was killed by IDF fire.
"There was an infiltration attempt and an attempt to damage the security barrier near Budrus this morning," the IDF Spokesperson's Unit said. "IDF troops guarding the barrier opened fire during an attempted arrest. Afterward, we received a report concerning a Palestinian casualty. The incident is under investigation."
The IDF said that there were still questions about what happened. Initial investigations have shown that IDF soldiers acted according to regulations. A disturbance developed when Palestinians attempted to breach or damage the security barrier. Soldiers attempted to arrest a suspect. The suspect did not heed soldiers' orders, prompting them to open fire.
Palestinians sources reported on Tuesday that Muhammad Awad, a teenager from the village of Budrus, was killed in the clash. The Palestinian Authority condemned the incident.
"Israel continues to kill innocent Palestinian citizens," a spokesperson for Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said.
