Saudi paper urges Palestinians to consider Trump peace plan

Administration has not shared details on plan and has consistently dismissed reported leaks as mere speculation.

The editor-in-chief of a Saudi newspaper on Wednesday urged Palestinians to keep an open mind toward a Mideast plan being devised by U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner.

Faisal Abbas wrote in Arab News on Wednesday that while the cards have been stacked against the Palestinians, Kushner's plan may reverse the situation and make peace more possible.

The Trump administration has not shared details of the plan and has consistently dismissed reported leaks as mere speculation that are both inaccurate and misleading. U.S. officials have recently indicated that the plan will likely be released after June 10.

The Saudi paper's column ran as Palestinians hold protests to mark Nakba Day. The Nakba ("catastrophe" in Arabic) refers to the displacement of Palestinian refugees during Israel's War of Independence. Nakba Day, commemorating this event, is marked on May 15, which was the first full day of Israeli independence in 1948.

Abbas wrote that there was a "strong counterargument that it is time to think outside the box" and added: "The Palestinians should negotiate hard, and then take what they can to secure a nation-state for future generations."
