The number of coronavirus deaths in Israel since the start of the epidemic has passed the 500 mark, and stood at 502 as of midnight Thursday.

On Friday morning, there were 26,026 active or symptomatic cases in Israel. A total of 321 patients were listed in serious condition.

Thus far, 43,747 Israelis have contracted coronavirus and recovered.

Who is succumbing to the virus? According to figures released on Wednesday by researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the average age of corona victims in Israel is 80.3. Slightly more than half (52%) of victims were male.

The youngest fatalities thus far were two 19-year-old women, one from Holon and one from Jerusalem. The two oldest fatalities – a resident of Ramle and a resident of Rehovot – were 100.

Most of the Israelis who have died of COVID were elderly, with 44% age 85 or over, and another 30% in the 75-84 age group. Less than 10% of the fatalities were under age 65.

The city with the largest number of COVID fatalities is Jerusalem, Israel's capital and largest city, with 91. Jerusalem was followed by Bnei Brak, where 55 residents have died of COVID, and Bat Yam, with 32 COVID fatalities.

Tel Aviv-Jaffa, which for a time was red-zoned due to a spike in new cases, has seen 26 COVID deaths among its residents, Beersheba and Holon have lost 16 residents each to the virus, and 10 residents of Petah Tikva have died of COVID.
