US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib found herself in the middle of controversy this week when she shared a tweet reading "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," which also included an "International Day of Solidarity" picture.

Tlaib, who won reelection in November, later deleted the tweet, reposting a message that read: "Thinking of my sity [grandmother] Muftieh and family in Palestine today. From Detroit to Gaza, we will always fight against oppression and inequality."

Jewish groups generally regard the statement as referring to the eradication of Israel, with the stopantisemitism.org watchdog condemning the message with its own social media post.

"Rashida Tlaib RT's out the same message that got Marc Lamont Hill canned from CNN," the group said, referring to the act of retweeting, or sharing, a tweet. Lamont Hill was fired from CNN in 2018 after delivering a speech at the UN calling for a "free Palestine from the river to the sea."

According to The Jewish Journal, the Palestine Liberation Organization, which the United States and Israel regarded as a terrorist organization until the Madrid Conference in 1991, had first adopted the saying in 1964 when it was placed into its formal charter.
