The US Senate on Tuesday voted to move forward with former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, with a majority of senators determining they have jurisdiction to place former presidents on trial in cases of impeachment. The vote was carried by a majority of 56 to 44.

The Senate thus rejected arguments by Trump's attorneys that holding an impeachment trial of a former president is unconstitutional.
The hearing was dominated by chilling video evidence of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, showing frenzied Trump supporters smashing their way into the US Capitol.
