Slovenia announced that it will ban all arms trade with Israel in response to the war in Gaza, in what it called "the first such move by a European Union member state." The measure covers the import, export and transit of weapons to and from Israel.
The Slovenian government has frequently criticized Israel over the war, and last year formally recognized a Palestinian state, describing it as part of its effort to end the fighting in Gaza as soon as possible.
"Slovenia is the first European country to ban the import, export and transit of arms to and from Israel," the government said in an official statement.
Spain has also previously announced it would halt dealings with Israeli arms firms, yet refained from announcing a total arms ban.
Earlier this week, a proposal to partially suspend Israel from the EU's Horizon research program, an initiative strongly promoted by Slovenia, failed after it did not receive the required support of 15 member states representing 65% of the EU population.
