The tragic deaths of director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle, who were apparently murdered in their home by their son Nick, have shocked the world. Many paid tribute to the legendary American-Jewish director, whose name appears on beloved cinematic works like the coming-of-age drama "Stand by Me," the fantasy comedy "The Princess Bride," and the romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally."

"When Harry Met Sally" scene at Katz's Deli (Photo: Archives du 7eme Art)

As is well known, one of the most famous scenes from the latter, and perhaps one of the most famous in all of cinema, takes place in a venerable New York delicatessen, when Sally (Meg Ryan) demonstrates to Harry (Billy Crystal) how she fakes a vocal orgasm – freely in front of all the restaurant's patrons (by the way, the elderly woman who requests "what she's having" is Estelle Reiner, Rob's mother).

Following news of Reiner's death, Jake Dell, the owner of Katz's Deli, paid tribute to the late director. "Rob Reiner was a friend of Katz's Deli in so many ways," Dell, whose family has operated the delicatessen for five generations, told The Hollywood Reporter. "The staff and everyone at Katz's remembers him with great fondness, and we have so many amazing memories of him. He was a regular customer who came in every time he arrived in the city – a Brooklyn guy who would come in and grab a sandwich."

Dell recalled that Reiner, along with Billy Crystal and screenwriter Nora Ephron (who later became a successful director in her own right), worked to determine exactly how the defining scene would look and how it would successfully incorporate the delicatessen, which opened (albeit under a different name and ownership) in 1888 and is famous for its pastrami sandwiches and other "Jewish" dishes like matzo ball soup, chopped liver, noodle kugel, rugelach, babka, and these days even special Hanukkah treats.

Just this past October, in an interview he gave to CBS's "60 Minutes" program, Reiner revealed that during filming of the delicatessen scene, he felt Meg Ryan wasn't giving her all to illustrate the sexual satisfaction she was experiencing. So he sat in her place across from Billy Crystal to show her how to do it properly. "And I'm pounding on the table, 'Yes! Yes! Yes!,' and suddenly I realize I'm having an orgasm in front of my mother, you know?," he said in the interview with his characteristic humor.

By the way, the famous table is still in the delicatessen, and is even marked with a sign that reads "Where Harry met Sally... hope you have what she had!" Bon appétit.

Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney, one of the boldest and most prominent stars of recent years, is used to stealing the spotlight on the red carpet and making waves in advertisements like the one for American Eagle. But Monday night at the premiere of her new film, "The Housemaid", she managed to move us in particular.

The reason? A dramatic, sexy, and elegant dress designed by Israeli fashion house Galia Lahav which made a big splash in Hollywood.

Sweeney chose a design that highlights Galia Lahav's recognizable signature – precise tailoring, rich fabrics, and an unapologetic presence. The choice of an Israeli designer for such a high-profile evening proves once again that Israeli designers are playing in the big leagues.

Behind the international success stands an inspiring story. Galia Lahav began her journey by studying at the Teachers' Seminary for Handicrafts and Art in Givatayim, Israel. She worked as an art teacher at an elementary school in Ashdod, and, in 1985, opened a small fashion design studio in the city, specializing in wedding dresses and unique lace. From the local studio, the path led to Dizengoff in Tel Aviv, and later to a four-story building on Herzl Street.

Today, Galia Lahav's fashion house is a global name with stores in Tel Aviv, Los Angeles and Hamburg, and about 70 points of sale worldwide. In 2016, another historic moment was recorded when the house was accepted into the French Federation of Haute Couture, becoming the first Israeli fashion house to achieve this prestigious accomplishment.

Sydney Sweeney's choice for a high-profile Hollywood event is not just a personal compliment to the designer, but a clear fashion statement – Israeli haute couture, and in the front row of the red carpet.

Vogue magazine published its 55 best-dressed people for 2025 on Thursday, with some appearing on the covers, including singer Bad Bunny, who received an especially fashionable full spread.

The list includes fashion stars who deliver memorable fashion moments, such as Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Jacob Elordi, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, and others.

"We compiled an unranked list of around 50 extremely fashionable characters from 2025, rounding up actors, models, musicians, politicians, dancers, gallerists, and more who dressed in ways that made us take notice," the magazine opened. "Our criteria were subjective, our judges all Vogue editors, and the list took shape through many meetings and debates," Vogue wrote.

"We drew in red carpet risk-takers and street style peacocks, but also an accessories-forward politician and a stylish ballerina about town. When we found that we couldn't stop at just 50, we settled on an unranked 55," the magazine wrote.

Surprisingly, alongside the well-known style-filled celebrities, models, and fashion icons everyone knows, Vogue added people we wouldn't think of in the context of fashion, such as Pope Leo XIV and Rama  Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Michelle Obama also starred on the list.

Anna Wintour, former editor-in-chief of American Vogue and global content director of the Condé Nast group (the corporation that owns Vogue), often mixes politics, which apparently led to her selection as New York's first lady.

Duwaji, a Syrian-American artist, wore a jacquard shirt by Palestinian-Jordanian designer Zeid Hijazi on the most recent election night, which Vogue magazine called New York's first lady's best outfit of the year. This fact highlights Dawaji's political support for Palestinians, mirroring her husband's stance.

Another interesting entry that surprised us was Pope Leo XIV, whom the magazine defined as "breaking with the humble tastes of his predecessor, Pope Francis—but keeping his tailor and maintaining the papal legacy for fine-fitting liturgical vestments." The pope even entered The New York Times' best-dressed list.

Men concerned about future hair loss may have additional prescription options to combat male androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness, Gizmodo reported.

Cosmo Pharmaceuticals unveiled on Wednesday the outcomes of two phase III clinical studies evaluating the topical medication clascoterone for androgenetic alopecia, according to Gizmodo. Participants using clascoterone demonstrated substantially greater hair restoration than those receiving a placebo – one study reported approximately 500% greater hair regrowth. These findings will facilitate potential Food and Drug Administration authorization in 2026, potentially establishing clascoterone as the first genuinely innovative pattern baldness therapy introduced in multiple decades.

The primary driver of male pattern baldness is genetic factors that render an individual's hair follicles overly sensitive to androgens, particularly dihydrotestosterone.

Effective treatments for androgenetic alopecia exist, including minoxidil (Rogaine's active component) and finasteride, alongside alternative procedures such as hair transplantation, according to Gizmodo. However, these options carry various potential limitations, including financial considerations, or may prove ineffective for certain individuals, Gizmodo noted.

Cosmo anticipates that clascoterone will establish a new category of hair-loss pharmaceuticals, Gizmodo reported. The topical medication functions as an androgen receptor inhibitor, directly targeting the hormones responsible for hair-follicle deterioration in androgenetic alopecia, according to Gizmodo. The Dublin-headquartered corporation maintains that clascoterone is not systemically absorbed, thereby reducing potential adverse effects.

The company's two pivotal studies enrolled nearly 1,500 male participants diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia, Gizmodo reported. Participants received random assignment to either placebo or topical clascoterone 5% solution applied to affected scalp regions, according to Gizmodo. Both investigations achieved their primary objectives – one demonstrated that clascoterone recipients experienced a 539% improvement in hair growth volume relative to placebo, while the other showed a 168% improvement, Gizmodo noted. The corporation stated, however, that absolute regrown hair quantities observed during trials remained comparable between both treatment cohorts, according to Gizmodo. Clascoterone demonstrated safety and tolerability, with most recorded adverse events during studies unrelated to the medication itself, Gizmodo reported.

"With strong efficacy across the two largest Phase III studies, and a favorable safety profile, clascoterone 5% topical solution opens the door to a fundamentally better treatment paradigm for patients," stated Giovanni Di Napoli, Cosmo chief executive officer, according to Gizmodo.

Should clascoterone receive approval for male pattern baldness, it would constitute the first innovative treatment introduced in approximately three decades – though this wouldn't represent clascoterone's inaugural success, Gizmodo reported. During 2020, Cassiopea, currently a Cosmo subsidiary, secured FDA authorization for the medication as a topical acne treatment, according to Gizmodo.

The corporation remains positioned to complete a mandatory 12-month follow-up safety investigation by spring 2026, subsequently planning to submit approval applications in both the US and the European Union, Gizmodo reported. Should authorization be granted, a substantial potential patient population exists, according to Gizmodo. Estimates indicate up to 50% of men will experience some pattern baldness by age 50, Gizmodo noted.

The Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris, operated by Mano Maritime, is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday morning at the port of Chania in Crete, and local organizations are planning another protest at the port. But this time they are escalating the tone and calling on service providers on the island – restaurant owners, shop owners, port workers, and tour guides – not to serve Israeli tourists on the island at all.

The protest against Israeli cruise passengers is planned for Tuesday at 09:00 at Souda port near the city of Chania. This is the third protest this year against the ship, following protests held in the summer and on November 4.

The protest is being led, again, by the teachers' union ELME (the Greek teachers' federation), which will allow teachers to stop classes for three hours (09:00-12:00) to enable them to participate in the protest.

"Soldiers taking a break from killing"

In the teachers' union announcement published Monday morning in media outlets on the island, it stated, "Israel, despite the ceasefire, has not stopped bombing Gaza, killing civilians and advancing in the West Bank. The genocidal policy of the murderous state continues and will continue as long as the occupation exists. There can be no peace without justice."

According to the announcement, the cruise ship is not just transporting tourists from Israel, but "constitutes part of a systematic effort to whitewash the genocide in Gaza and the ethnic cleansing in the West Bank through tourism." The announcement claimed that the ship transports soldiers "taking a break from killing" and as "tourists" walk around Greece singing songs like "Death to Arabs" and "Gaza is a cemetery."

As recalled, during the ship's previous visit to Crete on November 4, police made extensive use of tear gas against protesters and made arrests. Ship passengers were delayed for a long time on buses due to the protest. In the summer, the ship's route caused a chain of protests throughout Greece.

As mentioned, this morning's announcement called on tour guides, port workers, and food service and tourism workers in Crete "to make appropriate decisions and not cooperate, not to serve the murderers from Israel."

Winslet also criticized cosmetic procedures, advocating for natural aging and challenging contemporary beauty standards she attributes to social media's mental health impact.

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet has voiced serious concerns regarding the proliferation of weight loss medications, according to The Sunday Times.

In a candid interview with The Sunday Times published on Saturday, the 50-year-old performer expressed alarm about the current state of pharmaceutical dependence in the entertainment industry. "It is devastating," Winslet stated, according to the British newspaper. "If a person's self-esteem is so bound up in how they look, it's frightening."

The British star elaborated on the complexity of modern beauty culture. "And it's puzzling because I have moments when I think it's better, when I look at actresses at events dressed how they want, whichever shape. But then so many people are on weight-loss drugs. It's so varied. Some are making choices to be themselves, others do everything they can to not be themselves."

Winslet questioned whether users comprehend the substances they consume, The Sunday Times noted. "And do they know what they are putting in [their bodies]? The disregard for one's health is terrifying. It bothers me now more than ever. It is f****** chaos out there," she declared.

Beyond pharmaceutical interventions, the Avatar: Fire and Ash performer addressed cosmetic injectables, expressing preference for natural aging processes. "My favorite thing is when your hands get old," Winslet explained to The Sunday Times. "That's life, in your hands. Some of the most beautiful women I know are over 70, and what upsets me is that young women have no concept of what being beautiful actually is."

She challenged contemporary beauty ideals in the interview. "What idea of perfection are people aspiring to?" Winslet asked, subsequently attributing responsibility to "social media and its effect on mental health." The actress, who achieved global recognition at 19 after her starring role in 1997's "Titanic," disclosed her experiences with Hollywood's brutal beauty standards, The Sunday Times reported.

"The media was vile, singling me out for relentless bullying," Winslet recalled of her early career years. "I wasn't ready to be a famous actress. I was so young, but I felt so invaded."

Luana Lopes Lara, 29, became the world's youngest self-made female billionaire after Kalshi, the prediction platform she founded alongside Tarek Mansour, soared to a valuation of $11 billion. Behind the impressive figures stands an extraordinary personal trajectory that began on the stages of Bolshoi in Rio and ended at the pinnacle of America's fintech industry.

Lopes Lara grew up in Brazil and was accepted to the Bolshoi Theater School there, where she studied under an intense training regimen of up to 13 hours per day. According to reports, the atmosphere was exceptionally competitive, with sabotage attempts between dancers. After completing her studies in 2013, she danced for 9 months in Austria but chose to abandon her professional career and move to MIT, where she began a new path.

At MIT, Lopes Lara met Mansour, who became her partner. During the summer, she worked as an intern with Ray Dalio at Bridgewater, with Ken Griffin at Citadel Securities, and later at Five Rings Capital in New York – the place where, during a nighttime walk from work to the interns' apartments, the idea for the prediction platform was born.

In 2019, they presented the idea to Y Combinator, and in 2020, Kalshi became the first prediction platform to receive federal approval from the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission). Just before the US presidential election in 2024, the company won a legal battle that allowed it to offer legal contracts on election outcomes for the first time – a precedent-setting move in the field.

Lopes Lara confirmed her attendance after Minister of Diaspora Affairs Amichai Chikli invited her through a mutual acquaintance, her pastor, Rob McCoy. The Annual International Conference on Combating Antisemitism, which gathers many of Israel's most passionate supporters from around the world, was set to include her this year, as she frequently fought for Israel's reputation on campuses and in media interviews.

In the election itself, Kalshi users bet more than $500 million and, according to reports, successfully predicted President Donald Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. Mansour explained in one of the interviews she gave, "This is actually the best mechanism to know who's really going to win. We let the market speak instead of commentators, pollsters, or interested parties."

Growing fast, overtaking competitors, and reaching CNN's screen

Today, Kalshi presents itself as "the world's largest prediction markets company." The company's valuation is $11 billion. Lopes Lara and Mansour each hold approximately 12%, equivalent to about $1.3 billion.

Alongside business expansion, CNN recently signed an agreement that will bring real-time prediction data from Kalshi markets to the network's television, digital, and streaming broadcasts. According to publications, CNN will display a live ticker of market forecasts and allow reporters to use them during political, cultural coverage, and even weather forecasts. In doing so, Lopes Lara displaced pop star Taylor Swift, who held the title of the world's youngest self-made female billionaire.

Israel Hayom visited Vita Food to taste the impossible deal.

The post Angus beef burgers for 27 cents: Only in Israel appeared first on www.israelhayom.com.

]]>
In an era where burger prices in Israel continue to skyrocket, with large chains unhesitatingly charging upwards of 70 shekels ($19) for a patty and a bun, a contrary reality seems impossible to imagine. However, as part of the Israel Hayom "Lowest Price" series, a visit to Afula revealed a phenomenon that defies market logic: a complete burger for the price of a single shekel (27 cents). This is not a sample size or a practical joke, but a full meal priced lower than a bottle of mineral water.

This inconceivable price point is the brainchild of Vitaly, the owner of "Vita Food Afula," who decided to combat the rising cost of living through extreme measures. Rather than enticing customers with standard sales, he established a price impossible to ignore. He insists this involves a 4.2-ounce (120 gram) beef patty, ground on-site and served with house pickles and sauces, offering no compromise on quality or size.

The true surprise, however, lies in the ingredients. In a venue where one might expect inferior meat, the kitchen delivered a patty crafted from a blend of Angus brisket, Angus neck, and Angus ribeye cap. These premium raw materials are typically the hallmarks of gourmet burgers sold across Israel for 70 shekels or more.

"The price is not intended to project cheapness, but to cause people to taste and understand that there is something different here," Vitaly explained.

When asked if this is merely a marketing gimmick, Vitaly was adamant. "This is not a promotional move," he said. "I am fighting prices as much as possible, and it is most important to me that people arrive, taste, and return." Regarding his business model – or lack thereof – he remained transparent.

"I am losing money on every order, and this is part of my calculation," Vitaly said. "I believe that if people discover the taste, they will return for dishes at a higher price as well." Vitaly addressed the potential stigma that such a low price might imply poor quality, expressing confidence that the flavor would resolve any doubts.

"Anyone who understands meat will immediately feel that these are quality cuts and true meticulousness," he said. "The price is intended only to cause people to stop, enter, and discover the place."

Ultimately, after the first bite, the single shekel becomes almost an anecdote. The burger proved to be juicy, balanced, and precise, easily competing with leading restaurants in the genre. While the price may sound like a joke, for Vitaly, it serves as a tool to invite the public to discover a small venue with massive flavor – one that succeeds in creating a culinary revolution before the receipt is even printed.

A study recently published in the journal Psychological Bulletin of the American Psychological Association found that people who show higher levels of trust, in both individuals and institutions, report a greater sense of wellbeing compared to those who struggle to trust. The researchers pointed out that this is especially important because mental wellbeing is not only a measure of quality of life but also a predictor of health and longevity.

Why does trust enhance our sense of wellbeing? Dr. Sanam Hafeez, a neuropsychologist and director of Comprehend the Mind, explained that the study discovered people who feel they can rely on others, whether in close relationships or in broader social systems, experience less stress, better emotional regulation, and a greater feeling of security in the world.

"All of these contribute not only to mental health but also to physical health," she stated. "A lack of trust causes people to experience more loneliness, hypervigilance, or anxiety, and over the long term, chronic stress activates the body's stress system. Studies have already linked chronic stress to inflammation, heart disease, decreased immune function, and even cognitive decline."

Conversely, the ability to trust others can offer a degree of protection. It reduces cortisol levels and helps sustain healthy long-term behaviors – such as an active social life, seeking medical attention in time, and maintaining healthy routines, Hafeez explained. "Trust isn't just a pleasant emotion, it's a powerful psychological resource," she added. "When you cultivate it throughout life, it may contribute to both emotional resilience and longevity."

The research also found that the most crucial kind of trust is interpersonal trust, which is present in close ties with family and friends, and has the greatest effect on a sense of wellbeing. "In the clinic, one of the strongest protective factors in a patient's recovery process is a positive and strong social support system – and this is exactly what the research reinforces," said Dr. Patrice LeGaux, a marriage and family therapist.

LeGaux noted that trust becomes particularly vital in old age, when dependence on others increases. "When you have positive relationships with a stable foundation of trust, you also have higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction."

How can we boost our trust in other people? Even if the benefits of trust are clear, it's not always easy, especially when it has been violated in the past. Nonetheless, mental health experts explained that there are practical methods to begin rebuilding it.

Start small

According to the study, experience and environment influence trust. Dr. Cynthia Viar, a mental health counseling lecturer, explained that the process of building trust starts with small, everyday moments. For example, a person who struggles to trust can observe that colleagues arrive on time, keep their word, and collaborate. "That kind of observation can be reassuring and open the door to deeper, more meaningful interactions," she said. Hafeez recommended paying attention to how people behave consistently. "Do their actions align with their words? Do they listen without judgment? Do they respect your boundaries? Trust grows when behavior is consistent, even in small things."

Understand the risk involved

Increasing trust means taking small, calculated risks, said Dr. Hannah Holmes, a clinical psychologist. "There's always a possibility that people will disappoint us, particularly if it has already happened before, and that causes real fear."

Change your perspective

Trust requires a conscious shift in thought patterns and continuous monitoring of one's mood, explained Dr. Tori Broms. "Our general feeling affects how we see the world. When we are positive and balanced, we are more trusting, and when we are frustrated or pessimistic, we tend to be suspicious."

Examine the source of the difficulty

According to LeGaux, there is usually a good reason why we find it hard to trust. "The first step is to recognize this and legitimize it, to understand why we behave this way. Only then can we ensure that past injuries aren't present in new relationships." She said she asks patients, "Does this pain belong to the current relationship?" – a question that makes it possible to understand that you can be safe now, even if that was not the case in the past. "The real work is learning to trust ourselves, so we will know how to identify when a person in front of us is indeed trustworthy."

Stay in the moment

Hafeez emphasized the importance of being in the present. Don't assume that a new person will behave like someone from the past. "It requires awareness and patience, but it's possible. And it's also important to strengthen emotional boundaries. When we know we can say 'no,' move away, or protect ourselves, it's easier for us to give others a chance."

Give people a chance to prove themselves

Holmes suggested offering small opportunities that allow others to demonstrate trustworthiness, whether it's telling an embarrassing story or delegating a small task to someone else. "Trust is built slowly, and that's okay."

How do you balance trust and caution? LeGaux explained that trust is like a muscle – you need to exercise it. This includes trusting ourselves and our intuition. Instead of trusting blindly or automatically suspecting, Broms suggested practicing "realistic trust building." This involves checking if the person keeps promises, if their behavior is consistent, and if they know how to respect boundaries. Viar added that it is worthwhile to distinguish between "good judgment" and "cynicism." Both involve caution, but cynicism blocks the possibility of trust, while good judgment allows you to remain open to new information.
