According to Reuters, diplomats describe the mission as "directionless" and failing to boost aid. The center was established under President Trump's peace initiative.

European governments are re-evaluating their deployment of personnel to the US-led coordination hub for Gaza, citing a failure to enhance humanitarian aid flows or achieve political breakthroughs, according to Reuters.

The Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC), established in southern Israel last October under President Donald Trump's peace plan, was tasked with monitoring the ceasefire and developing post-war policies. Reuters noted that nations including France, Germany, Britain, Egypt, and the UAE sent staff to influence the enclave's future.

Run by a US general with Israeli and American troops, the CMCC was a pillar of Trump's phase one ceasefire plan. However, eight foreign diplomats told Reuters that officials from some European states have not returned to the facility near the Gaza border since the holiday season.

One Western diplomat described the center as "directionless", while another told the outlet, "Everybody thinks it's a disaster, but there is no alternative." Reuters reported that this previously undisclosed rethink reflects broader unease among Washington's allies regarding Trump's unorthodox policies on Venezuela, Gaza, and Greenland.

While some governments consider reducing their presence or withdrawing entirely, they declined to be identified, Reuters stated.

Washington declared the start of phase two last week, focusing on reconstruction. Meanwhile, the border with Egypt remains closed due to Israeli objections, and diplomats told Reuters that aid volumes have not risen meaningfully since the truce, despite widespread malnutrition.

Sources told Reuters that many trucks entering Gaza carry commercial goods, and Israel retains control over aid policy despite the CMCC's mandate. Israel bans "dual-use" items, and diplomats noted no concessions have been made on materials like metal tent poles. An Israeli official in the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) unit official told Reuters that 45% of trucks since October were commercial but argued humanitarian aid takes priority. The official admitted to restrictions on dual-use goods but pointed to alternatives such as wood.

CMCC personnel have produced "white papers" on governance and rebuilding, but their implementation is uncertain, Reuters reported. Diplomats indicated that countries are unlikely to formally exit the center to avoid angering Trump and to preserve the option of future engagement. They also fear that leaving would cede more post-war policy influence to Israel, as no Palestinians are present at the hub.

The administration warned of new tariffs on NATO allies and French goods, triggering a flight from US assets. European leaders have termed the moves "unacceptable," CNBC reported.

Markets endured sharp corrections on Tuesday at the opening bell in New York President Donald Trump's intensified rhetoric regarding Greenland, which included threats of new levies on nations resisting the sale of the Danish territory to the US, CNBC reported.

The greenback declined while Treasury yields rose as the president's ultimatum drove capital away from US assets, according to CNBC.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surrendered 725 points, or approximately 1.5%. The S&P 500 fell 1.3% – heading for its worst performance in two months – while the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.5%, CNBC noted.

In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump stated that US imports from eight NATO members will face rising duties "until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland." The tariffs will commence at 10% on February 1 and increase to 25% on June 1, according to the report.

Trump then threatened to enact 200% tariffs on French wines and champagne, citing reports that French President Emmanuel Macron is unwilling to join his so-called Board of Peace. Trump also targeted the UK, labeling the government's plan to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands (in the Indian Ocean) – home to the UK-US military site Diego Garcia that also serves US troops – to Mauritius (an island nation in East Africa) as an "act of great stupidity." He claimed this was "another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired," CNBC reported.

US exchanges were shuttered Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

"With the US off yesterday the implications of the tariff threats over Greenland had yet to fully percolate through financial markets," Deutsche Bank strategist Jim Reid said in a Tuesday note covered by CNBC. "Markets have reacted but there's clearly room for bigger moves if the rhetoric increases further."

There are "growing fears about some kind of retaliatory trade escalation from Europe, with increasingly strong comments from several officials," Reid noted, according to the outlet.

European figures have described the fresh threats as "unacceptable" and are reportedly considering retaliation – with France reportedly pushing for the European Union to deploy its strongest economic counter-measure, known as the "Anti-Coercion Instrument" (an EU economic defense tool), CNBC reported.

Trump, who is set to address the World Economic Forum in Davos (a Swiss alpine resort town) on Wednesday, stated he had agreed to confer with European leaders at the event to discuss his Greenland ambitions, according to the report.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended Trump's proposed takeover of Greenland to CNBC on Tuesday. "That will stop any kind of a kinetic war, so why not pre-empt the problem before it starts?" Bessent said.

Hostilities between Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary flared Tuesday following the carrier's rejection of Starlink connectivity. The report details that Musk responded to the decision by mocking O'Leary's intelligence and suggesting he might acquire the airline himself.

The executive claimed the necessary equipment would cost the airline approximately $250 million a year in fuel – about one dollar per passenger. O'Leary told the broadcaster that while travelers might use free internet, they would not pay for it. Musk disputed this assessment on X, asserting that the CEO was ill-informed about the drag caused by the hardware, according to Coincentral.

During his interview, O'Leary acknowledged Musk's wealth but described him as an idiot and referred to X as a cesspit. He added that he would disregard Musk's views on aviation. Coincentral noted that Musk subsequently posted multiple times about buying the airline, asking his 232.5 million followers for a price and joking about appointing someone named Ryan as the new leader.

A poll created by the tech mogul asked if he should buy the company and restore "Ryan" to power. The survey attracted over 29 million views and 766,000 votes, with 77% supporting the idea. Ryanair's stock reacted to the attention, rising 2.52% in after-hours trading on January 20.

The company currently has a market cap of $35 billion on NASDAQ. Musk, whose net worth stands at $681 billion, previously bought Twitter for $44 billion in 2022 and fired its executive team. Ryanair's official X account joined the dispute, recalling a sarcastic comment it made during a previous outage asking if Musk needed WiFi.

Musk retorted by insisting O'Leary should be fired and knows nothing about drag. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian commented on the entertainment value of the timeline, while users suggested new CEOs named Ryan. The poll is set to close after 24 hours, though no formal offer has been made.

Sanders faces removal from Holocaust Museum council https://www.israelhayom.com/2026/01/20/trump-appointees-push-remove-sanders-holocaust-museum/ https://www.israelhayom.com/2026/01/20/trump-appointees-push-remove-sanders-holocaust-museum/#respond Tue, 20 Jan 2026 09:00:38 +0000 https://www.israelhayom.com/?p=1116969 Multiple Trump-appointed members of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum board are pushing to remove Sen. Bernie Sanders, alleging he has rarely attended meetings throughout his nearly two-decade tenure. Board members told Jewish Insider that Sanders' accusations of genocide against Israel contradict the museum's core mission of Holocaust education and combating antisemitism.

A coalition of Trump-appointed United States Holocaust Memorial Museum board members is demanding Sen. Bernie Sanders' removal from the council, charging that his persistent absence from meetings and public accusations labeling Israel's actions as genocide fundamentally clash with the institution's mission, Jewish Insider reported. Sanders' council membership spans nearly two decades.

The Holocaust Memorial Council's composition primarily features presidential appointees holding five-year terms, complemented by House and Senate members designated by congressional leadership, Jewish Insider noted. Though lawmakers face identical five-year term limits in principle, in practice they may continue serving until successors arrive or officeholders depart Congress.

Jonathan Burkan, receiving dual Trump appointments to the council, reported never witnessing Sanders at any gathering – a stark departure from attendance records of fellow Democratic and Republican congressional members, Jewish Insider reported.

"Everything that's happened after Oct. 7, everything that has been going on with antisemitism, with the Holocaust — I do feel that if someone is a Jewish elected official, they should at least attend one meeting in over a 20-year period of time," Burkan stated. "They should find someone else besides Bernie just to be on the council." Burkan additionally declared that "Bernie Sanders accusing Israel of genocide downplays the Holocaust, which actually hurts the museum which he serves."

Chairman Stuart Eizenstat has disputed genocide characterizations targeting Israel, maintaining that extreme anti-Israel language propels violent antisemitism, Jewish Insider noted. The museum's leadership has equally condemned parallels drawn between Holocaust atrocities and Gaza military operations.

Daniel Huff, joining the board through Trump's first-term appointment, stressed that it's "important that the museum be a bipartisan effort," highlighting the regular, engaged participation of other Democratic lawmakers in meetings, Jewish Insider reported. "That's the type of representation that we want," Huff declared. "My observation, simply, is that Sanders has not shown up to any meeting, as far as I can tell."

"The problem is that he's publicly out there advocating positions that are really at odds with some of the fundamental things that the museum does, and one of them is making sure that the word 'genocide' is carefully safeguarded, and deployed only when necessary, so as not to diminish the memory of those who died in the Holocaust," Huff elaborated.

Given rising antisemitism, the Holocaust Museum carries vital responsibilities, making it "important that everybody who's in a leadership position there is focused on the importance of the moment, the urgency of the moment," Huff argued. "We're living in a dangerous moment and everyone ought to be paying attention," Huff emphasized. "We need people who understand the fierce urgency of the moment we're in, and the need to act wisely and decisively."

While numerous Democrats could excel as candidates and contributors, Sanders falls short of those benchmarks, Huff suggested to Jewish Insider. "It's not a political statement … the ask is just, find someone who's aligned and involved — that's it, very simple," Huff remarked.

Rob Garson, serving as president of the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, said his recent first-time board appointment brought the unexpected discovery of Sanders' membership, Jewish Insider reported. "It's not as if they have that many [meetings] in any given year, and it's not as if it's in an inconvenient place for him to come to. He clearly just either doesn't care or doesn't want to care," Garson stated.

Sanders' rhetoric stands "diametrically opposed to the message of the Holocaust Memorial Council," Garson noted. "It should be people that actually are aligned with what the Holocaust Museum stands for, and Sanders just isn't that," Garson declared.

Tila Falic, another recent Trump selection, maintained that appointees should "represent Holocaust education, and it represents combating antisemitism for Jews and for non-Jews in the United States … people that are appointed should take their job seriously by, first of all, showing up." If attendance proves impossible or alignment with museum goals remains absent, "then he should be removed and give that seat to somebody who wants to take an active role and make a difference."
