Across all theaters, Israel has achieved significant gains following the blow it suffered on October 7. It has struck its enemies hard and, with American assistance, succeeded in forcing Hamas and Hezbollah into moves they had refused to take – releasing hostages while the IDF maintains its presence in the Strip, and ceasing fire from Lebanon as an expression of solidarity with Hamas, despite Israel's continued freedom of operation in Lebanon and ground presence at five points along the border.

However significant these achievements are, they do not guarantee sustained and strategically meaningful long-term change in the regional landscape. To achieve this goal – which means victory in the war – Hamas must be fully disarmed, and Hezbollah must either be disarmed or at minimum prevented from strengthening and returning to southern Lebanon.

Realizing these objectives is far more difficult than achieving the goals reached so far, because for Hamas and Hezbollah, this is no longer about paying a heavy price to ensure survival and protect strategic assets, but rather about making concessions of existential significance. This is because they require Hamas and Hezbollah to relinquish a central component of their identity and control over territory, and because such a move would amount to Hamas admitting that the October 7 attack was a mistake and accepting that, in Palestinian national memory, the attack that galvanized the Palestinian public will be recorded as a disaster and grave error.

The impression is that the American administration has not yet decided whether to back powerful Israeli force moves that would enable completing the collapse of Hamas, or to prefer, as it currently leans, to begin implementing phase two of the plan (perhaps even without waiting for the return of Ran Gvili's body), at least in the area under IDF control, without disarming Hamas. Each path faces numerous obstacles due to the plan's ambiguity, which requires agreement on small details, the parties' differing interpretations of the plan's intent, the multiplicity of parties meant to be involved, and above all – President Trump's eagerness to demonstrate progress and strengthen the message that the war has ended, even when conditions on the ground actually indicate difficulty in advancing the plan.

To avoid having to make a strategic decision between completing the war objectives and leveraging achievements so far to shape a better security reality for the coming years, versus avoiding an undesired confrontation with an especially friendly American president who operates from his own motivations – Israel must make every effort to convince Trump that backing Israel to complete the mission is also in his interest. Among other reasons, it could help expand the Abraham Accords. One way to do this is to create a broad internal Israeli front on this issue, beyond the government. After all, the hostage dispute is already behind us.

New South Wales authorities announced the decision to lay the charges against the 24-year-old Naveed Akram on Wednesday. "Following extensive inquiries under Operation Arques … investigators attended a hospital where they charged a 24-year-old Bonnyrigg man with 59 offences." Akram, who was injured by law enforcement officials when they intervened in the shooting, was admitted to a hospital and was in a coma, preventing proper questioning. On Tuesday morning, he woke up and the case was heard in court the following afternoon.

"Police will allege in court the man engaged in conduct that caused death, serious injury and endangered life to advance a religious cause and cause fear in the community," police said in a statement referencing the report. "Early indications point to a terrorist attack inspired by ISIS, a listed terrorist organisation in Australia."

The defendant did not seek release on bail and is set for a subsequent hearing on April 8. The docket includes 40 counts of wounding with intent to kill, positioning an explosive device, discharging a firearm to inflict grievous bodily injury, and exhibiting a terrorist symbol.

Akram and his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram targeted a gathering marking the commencement of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach on Sunday. Police revealed that Sajid – who was killed by officers during the incident – had legally acquired the weaponry deployed in the assault. The rampage claimed 15 lives, including that of a 10-year-old child, leaving another 20 victims in hospital care as of Wednesday. Officials designated the tragedy a terrorist act on the night of the occurrence.

The legal action against Naveed arrived one day after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese observed that the Sunday attack appeared to be motivated by the Islamic State, the report concluded.

Loureiro, a 47-year-old fusion scientist who passed away at a hospital on Tuesday after being shot Monday night in Brookline, Massachusetts, according to the outlet. Per the prosecutor's office, investigators had not taken any suspects into custody as of Tuesday afternoon, and the inquiry is ongoing, AP stated. Despite social media being rife with speculation on Iran potentially being involved in the murder as revenge against Israel's assassination of key scientists from its nuclear program in the 12-day war, there is no credible information on this. Likewise, there is no indication that he was Jewish or that he held pro-Israel views, despite some commentators saying that.

The homicide probe in Brookline comes as police in Providence, Rhode Island, located approximately 50 miles away, continue their search for a gunman responsible for killing two students and injuring nine others at Brown University on Saturday, AP noted. The FBI confirmed on Tuesday that it was aware of no connection between the crimes, according to the report.

Loureiro joined the university in 2016 and was appointed last year to direct the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, a leading facility focused on clean energy advancements, AP reported. The lab employed more than 250 people across seven buildings at the time he took charge, according to the report.

MIT noted that the professor, who was married, was raised in Viseu, central Portugal, and completed his studies in Lisbon before earning a doctorate in London, AP stated. The outlet added that he served as a researcher at a nuclear fusion institute in Lisbon prior to his tenure at the US institution.

Speaking to a campus publication, Dennis Whyte, an engineering professor and former leader of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, honored his successor, AP reported. "He shone a bright light as a mentor, friend, teacher, colleague and leader, and was universally admired for his articulate, compassionate manner," Whyte said.

AP reported that MIT President Sally Kornbluth described Loureiro's death in a statement as a "shocking loss."

A 22-year-old Boston University student who resides near Loureiro's apartment told The Boston Globe that she heard three loud noises on Monday evening, fearing they were weapon discharges. "I had never heard anything so loud, so I assumed they were gunshots," Liv Schachner said, according to the newspaper. "It's difficult to grasp. It just seems like it keeps happening."

According to The Boston Globe, some of Loureiro's students visited the three-story brick building on Tuesday afternoon to pay their respects, AP noted.

John J. Arrigo, the US ambassador to Portugal, shared an online tribute honoring Loureiro for his leadership and contributions to science, AP reported.

Reflecting on the institute's role upon his appointment to lead the plasma science lab last year, the physicist emphasized its global impact, according to AP. "It's not hyperbole to say MIT is where you go to find solutions to humanity's biggest problems," Loureiro stated. "Fusion energy will change the course of human history."

The incident took place shortly after 4:00 p.m. (local time) near the corner of Kingston Avenue and Lincoln Place – just one block from Chabad's headquarters.

According to police, the stabbing began with a verbal argument that initially appeared random between two men. The suspect walked away from the scene, but the victim, a 35-year-old man, followed him, and the two became involved in another confrontation that turned violent. According to reports, the attacker began cursing Jews and even said, "It's okay if the Holocaust were to happen again."

At this point, according to law enforcement sources, the suspect pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the victim in the chest. Despite the injury, the victim continued to chase the suspect for some distance. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, treated and released, with his condition described as not life-threatening.

Police are examining reports that antisemitic statements were made by the suspect during the confrontation – a detail that strengthens the suspicion of a hate crime. The investigation is taking place against a backdrop of growing tension in the Jewish community, partly following the attack in Sydney, Australia, and a recent antisemitic assault on the New York subway.

"We traveled yesterday to light Hanukkah menorahs with Jews, to bring Jewish light to their homes. We met Jews from all walks of life and, after several hours, went down to the subway to the World Chabad Center. During the transfer between Line 4 and Line 3, a father and son were present. The father began attacking and cursing the boy, who appeared to be around bar mitzvah age. There were about eight of us boys, and I naively thought this was a mentally disturbed person."

He continued: "We entered the car together with him, and then he began shouting anti-Jewish slurs and making threatening gestures toward the boys and toward me. I started recording his actions, and then his son, who was standing in front of me and hadn't done anything, began attacking me, taking my phone, making gun signs at my head, and told me, 'If you don't give me your phone now, I will kill you.'"

Later, Mandy recounted that one of the boys tried to help him, but "the father of the boy who attacked me grabbed the boy by the throat and pressed him against a pole in the car. The moment the doors opened, we immediately fled, even though it wasn't the station we were supposed to get off at."

He pointed out that he received almost no assistance from the other passengers who witnessed the entire incident: "It was a difficult incident because no one tried to intervene and stop it. But the moment something physical started happening, two people tried to stop it, but most of the people in the car didn't do anything."

These assailants need to be found and arrested before they take another subway ride.

Mandy and his friends, who were with him, filed a police complaint shortly after the antisemitic attack: "I sent the videos to an officer on WhatsApp, and they said they would check it. Today we gave testimony at the police station, they had us sign forms, and showed us pictures of the suspects. According to what we understood, the officers know their identities but haven't caught them yet."

Against the backdrop of the shocking massacre in Australia, Azraf warned about the rise in antisemitism also in New York and pointed an accusing finger at newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani: "Yesterday the mayor of New York visited The Ohel [memorial site for Chabad leader] because of the attack in Sydney, but regarding what's happening in the New York subway, he's not protecting Jewish security and isn't condemning the incident."

Looking ahead, Mandy refused to bow his head: "It seems antisemitic incidents are starting to intensify. We're trying to protect ourselves, but it's clear we won't hide Jewish symbols. We'll continue to illuminate the darkness that's trying to prevent us from doing what we need to do."

The president opened with a reference to the antisemitic attack that occurred during Hanukkah in Sydney, saying it was "an antisemitic attack, exactly what it is," and added that "all nations must stand together against the forces of radical Islamic terror." According to him, the US "joins in mourning the dead and prays for the speedy recovery of the wounded."

Trump then moved to sharp criticism of the American political system, warning of a profound shift in the balance of power. "The Jewish and Israeli lobby used to be the strongest in Washington. That's no longer the case. Today you have to be very careful," he said. According to him, "You have a Congress, especially the House of Representatives, that is becoming antisemitic," and added that there are members of Congress "who don't like Israel. They hate Israel." Trump noted that such a phenomenon would have been "unthinkable 15 years ago."

The president linked the growing antisemitism to the denial of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack. "There are people who deny it even happened – just like they deny the Holocaust. This didn't happen many years ago; this happened now," he said. According to him, he himself was exposed to footage from the attack, and said, "I saw the tapes. I wish I hadn't seen them." Trump emphasized that his administration will not allow the spread of such phenomena, but called on Jews in the US to be vigilant.

During the event, Dr. Miriam Adelson, publisher of Israel Hayom, was invited to the stage. Trump noted that Adelson contributed to his campaign, "indirectly and directly, $250 million," and described her as "an amazing woman, with a wonderful husband, a man who loved Israel." Adelson, in turn, recalled that she came to the Knesset in October specifically "with a scooter... just to hear you, I wanted to hear you live." She later noted that she recently spoke with attorney Alan Dershowitz, who raised with her the legal thing about "four more years," referring to the possibility of a third term for President Trump.

The president then quipped about Adelson, suggesting she offered to give him "another $250 million" if he ran for a third term.

Later in his speech, Trump sent a clear threat to Hamas. "If Hamas plays games, they will be in big trouble," he said, emphasizing that his administration acted decisively to return all the hostages, both living and fallen, and responded to the call of the families of fallen hostages. According to him, this was an effort that even he thought was impossible, but was completed.

Toward the end, the president addressed the Jewish audience directly and said, "You are protected. You are a special people." He concluded with a symbolic message for the holiday. "The Hanukkah story reminds us that light will always triumph over darkness."

Earlier, during a Hanukkah reception at the White House, US President Donald Trump hosted the Neutra and Alexander families, the parents of late Captain Omer Neutra, killed while held hostage by Hamas, and Staff Sergeant Edan Alexander, who was released from Hamas captivity and re-enlisted in the IDF.

According to Ronen Neutra, Omer's father, "President Trump spoke about the release of the hostages with emphasis on the fallen and called us to the stage, where we emphasized that there is still a fallen hostage, Ran Gvili, who must be returned."
