Birthright Israel, the primary organization connecting young Jews worldwide to Israel with the aim of building a strategic Zionist "Iron Dome," has brought approximately 850,000 young people to the country to date.

The celebratory event drew many prominent figures from Israeli society, including Israel Hayom publisher Dr. Miriam Adelson, who the main donor to Birthright Israel; Meir Shamir, controlling shareholder of Mivtach Shamir and chairman of Birthright Israel's Israeli Steering Committee; Brigadier General Ophir Levios, IDF chief education officer; Eylon Levy, former spokesperson for the National Public Diplomacy Directorate; Lt. Col. Or Livni-Ben Yehuda, commander of the Caracal Battalion; Yuval Sharabi, daughter of the murdered hostage Yossi Sharabi, who also performed at the event; Eden Golan, Israel's Eurovision representative; the band Hatikva 6; Hagit Yaso; and others.

Gidi Mark, CEO of Birthright Israel, opened his remarks by asking attendees to observe a moment of silence in memory of 13 young Birthright alumni who were killed at the Nova music festival on Oct. 7.

"Almost every young Jew who has come to Israel since October has come through Birthright," he said. "Some 15,000 young Jews will come here this summer, and that's not to be taken for granted. Being surrounded by Jewish friends, taking pride in Judaism, learning more about Israel and yourselves, and creating lifelong connections – this is Birthright's vision. We will never give up on our unity and mutual support."

Dr. Miriam Adelson began her speech by saying, "I prepared a speech – but decided to speak from the heart. Seventeen years ago, my husband Sheldon said to me, 'Birthright has a long waiting list, how can this be? I remember my parents wanted to come to Israel but didn't have the money.' He came from a poor family, and later, when he had money, he offered to bring them to Israel, but they said they were too old. 'I don't want Jewish children to be old and miss coming to Israel, so we will help bring all those waiting.'

"I always told Birthright participants: You will be our soldiers in the world when something happens to Israel. We need people who know our history, who know what happened to us for thousands of years, who know the truth about Israel. We need these people all over the world. To be in the White House, to vote, to influence. Today, our soldiers are Birthright participants. You fight antisemitism, fight on college campuses, wave Israeli flags on every corner.

"I want to pray for the return of the hostages, for the safe return of our soldiers, for our people around the world. I thank all Israeli soldiers of all religions. I will continue to say: You are our soldiers in the world. You came here with great courage during a war for Israel's existence, and I salute you for that.

"Soon you will need to be called upon bravely to fight for world public opinion, where antisemitic lies and libels have taken root. And like the soldiers, you too are welcomed here as heroes because of your battle on this front."

IDC founder and president Professor Uriel Reichmann, who presented the doctorate to Adelson, spoke about Dr. Miriam and the late Sheldon Adelson: "The tension in which you lived never made you forget for a moment your deep commitment to Israel. Your husband, Sheldon, was completely inspired by your Zionism, and from there began a public and philanthropic campaign unique in our generation."

"You never stopped standing up for our people proudly, against the most powerful entities in the world. As a daughter of Holocaust survivors, it's no wonder that along with a great contribution to the spaceship that took off for the moon you asked for only one thing – that it bear the name 'The Jewish people live,'" Reichman said.

Approximately a month ago, Dr. Adelson was awarded an honorary doctorate from Ariel University in Samaria.

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Adelson said that her late husband, Sheldon, had also been awarded an honorary doctorate from IDC two years ago: "Thank you for the exceptional honor. This is of paramount important for me, just as it was for my late husband, Sheldon, who received the honor here two years ago."

Dr. Adelson spoke of the early days of the IDC, saying, "Being an entrepreneur means being interdisciplinary, it means daring rather than fearing, and breaking with convention. Here, extended military service in a meaningful role is given a place of honor, and is not a disadvantage. Here, at times of crisis, a sort of online war room operates in which the best minds work around the clock to repel growing hatred of Jews on the internet."

"Much of this is thanks to Professor Reichman, Uriel. Thank you for decades of showing Sheldon and me true friendship. You are a wise man and it was an honor for us to speak with you, for example on issues like the nation-state law or the qualities of Naftali Bennett, and agree – or disagree. Differences of opinion dies not change the fact that we always admired your basic qualities."

Beer was infected with the virus during a fundraising mission for his organization in Florida last month.

Beer was brought back to Israel on the Adelson family's plane after several weeks of treatment in a Miami hospital, including several days under an induced coma and on a ventilator. He managed to get out of the plane by himself, despite struggling to walk.

"We haven't seen in him for 6 weeks, he was on the verge o death, and now it's just amazing that we can see him and kiss him, we are dying to see him again," one of his daughters said just moments before his return.

Once he had descended the stairs to the tarmac, he and his wife embraced each other. "I want to thank the medical team that helped me make it back to Israel, and to Dr. Miriam Adelson and her husband [businessman and philanthropist] Sheldon Adelson, I love them so much," he said. He also gave a special gift to the physician who treated him in Miami and flew with him.

He later told Israel Hayom: "It's amazing to be back home, I did not think I would see my wife and children again."

On his Facebook page he wrote:

"What a journey ... What a great ending.
Thank you for bringing our father back home.
Thank you Dr. Miriam and Sheldon Adelson.
With all the happiness and joy we feel, we don't forget all the people who are fighting for their lives right now, and all those who have lost their lives or lost someone they love.
We have so much to write and say and so many people to thank ... and we will be sharing more soon..
But for now, home sweet home. Thank you all for being here for us!♡ The Beer Family and Eli"

Some fifty ultra-Orthodox entrepreneurs took part at an event in Bnei Barak on Tuesday hosted by Kamatech, an organization dedicated to the integration of haredim in the Israeli high tech industry, with the keynote speaker being philanthropist and businessman Sheldon Adelson.

Adelson was interviewed by Yasmin Lukatz the executive director of the Israel Collaboration Network (ICON), a non-profit organization that aims to create a Silicon Valley-based community to harness and support Israeli startup technology and innovation.

Lukatz has been a driving force in making Kamatech a success story. Co-founder and CEO Moshe Friedman told the audience that "Kamatech has two periods: The period before we met Lukatz, and the one after we met her."

Lukatz's interview with Adelson covered a range of topics, starting from his early childhood in a poor family, his emergence as a leading force in the computer trade show business with his pioneering company Comdex, and later as a major philanthropist.

Dr. Miriam and Sheldon Adelson with Kamatech CEO Moshe Friedman Yehoshua Yosef

Lukatz began the interview by asking him about his first business.

"The first time I had a business was when I was 12 years old," Adelson said. "My older brother went out after school, and I asked him where, and he said that he was going to work, to sell papers. So I asked my mother if I could go with him, and she said yes. So I asked the fellow who owned the corner place if I could do the same thing. He said, 'sure.' So I started to sell newspapers. At the end of the day, the owner came over and emptied out the apron and left only a few coins for me.  So I said, 'How do I make it my money.' And he responded, 'You have to give me 200 dollars.' So I went to my parents and asked for 200 dollars and of course they didn't have it. And my father said, why don't you go to visit Uncle Al, the treasurer of a credit union."

Adelson eventually got a 200-dollar loan from the credit union, and had to pay it back with interest in weekly installments.

"Al told me that I have to come rain, snow or shine, and that I have to bring 15 dollars plus interest every Tuesday at 8 o'clock to return the loan … So that was my first business."

Adelson further recalled how he came up with the idea of setting up a medical research fund, what is known as the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Medical Research Foundation.

"I am not walking so easy. The doctor who took care of me, wrote books and did a lot of research, I was grateful for the care that I got, so I asked him if he wanted to do more research," Adelson recalled.

The doctor said that he would need 10 million dollars, and didn't think anyone would give him such a sum, but Adelson did.

"He didn't know that I was a successful businessman he took care of me like any other patient. I did some research to find out why there are no more findings or additional treatments."

Adelson was shocked to discover that scientists were reluctant to collaborate because they got compensation based on the number of publications they produced, and this prevented the development of better treatment and cures, including for what he was suffering from.

Ultimately, he convened senior scientists and proved to them that their discoveries should not depend on the number of publications. He asked them whether they knew how many papers Jonas Salk, a doctor whose efforts made the polio vaccine a reality, had published.

This question, which was left unanswered, helped sway them to join forces and collaborate with his foundation.

"We don't finance a single laboratory, we finance the scientists. At our peak we financed about 125 institutions and 200 scientists. As of today, we have 26 findings, meaning we have found cures or treatments for 26 different things," Adelson said.

Asked by the audience what advice he would give young entrepreneurs, he said that it was important to find a business partner that "lets you run the business without interference" and that they prepare for a possible failure.

"Everybody falls; but you have to know how to get back up on your feet," he said, stressing the need to keep extra funds available.

"If you believe in your business, raise the money for it," he said.

When asked which cause gave him the most inspiration, he said the medical foundation and the Birthright Israel program, which brings young Jews on 10-day tours of Israel.

"I put over 400 million dollars into Birthright, and it brought in more than 700,000 kids from around the world," Adelson said.

Asked if his childhood dreams were fulfilled in adulthood, he surprised everyone by saying:  "I didn't have dreams. I didn't have dreams that I wanted to fulfill. I just had entrepreneurial-type ideas and started different businesses."

Toward the end, when asked what he was most proud of, he answered: "Marrying my wife." He recalled that he and his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, just celebrated their 28th anniversary. "And we never had a fight."

Businessman and philanthropist Sheldon Adelson received an honorary doctorate from the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya on Thursday in the first such ceremony at the Israeli university.

Professor Ariel Reichman, the president and founder of the institution, praised Adelson in a statement issued just before the event, calling him "a dear friend and true partner of IDC Herzliya" and said that his prolific and important activity in an abundance of fields made him "one of the most influential Jewish personalities in the world, due both to his thriving hotel and media businesses and to his enormous contributions and advocacy for Jewish life and the State of Israel."

According to Reichman, the decision to confer the degree on Adelson stemmed from a desire to express gratitude to Adelson, who has become "an inspiration and a model of the power of one individual's entrepreneurial determination and strength, of the ability to overcome difficulties and failures while exercising creativity, and of personal courage and rare ability."

Reichman added that "it is all of these things that make him one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our generation." He noted that the decision to grant Adelson this unique honor for the first time in the university's 25-year history was made "in appreciation of his life's work, his love, loyalty and contributions to the State of Israel, and his friendship and support of IDC Herzliya."

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

During the speech at the event on Thursday, Reichman said he said Adelson was "one of the world's legendary entrepreneurs." He went on to say that "many people have marveled at the projects that he built: He built 'Venice' with gondolas and waterways in Las Vegas; he built in Singapore – what became a national landmark and symbol; but few people have the privilege to see up close the creativity and innovation, his resolve and ability to overcome challenges. Watching Sheldon going through his challenges and successes inspired me in my journey to build the IDC."

In his statement before the ceremony, Reichman said that both Adelson and his wife, Israel Hayom Publisher Dr. Miriam Adelson, have "always stood by IDC Herzliya, even in difficult times," recalling that "in 2013, the Adelson School of Entrepreneurship was established [at IDC] – the first of its kind in Israel and the world."

Later, at the event itself, he continued praising the couple.

"The Adelsons' creativity has not been limited to business, many of their contributions to Israel and the Jewish people are truly life-changing, and their direct support has enabled 150,000 young Jews to take part in the Birthright experience that has left a lasting impact on them and rekindled their connection to their Jewish roots. And by establishing the Israeli American Council, they created a powerful organization of hundreds of thousands of ex-Israelis whose goals include supporting Israel, maintaining Israeli culture and reducing assimilation. Their generosity is also witnessed in many other projects spread all over Israel and the United States."

He added, that "when the story of Israel will be told in the future it will undoubtedly portray them as prominent figures in the country's history."

The Adelsons are strong supporters of numerous educational and Jewish identity programs in Israel as well as in the United States. One such program, Taglit-Birthright Israel, offers young Jews a free 10-day tour of Israel.

The couple opened their first drug abuse clinic in Tel Aviv in 1993. ‎Miriam Adelson helped develop a methadone program for teen ‎addicts and has co-authored numerous research papers on ‎methadone treatment‏‏. In 2000, the Adelsons opened the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. ‎Adelson Clinic for Drug Abuse Treatment and Research in Las ‎Vegas, Nevada to help treat painkiller and opioid addiction.‎

Since 2007, the couple has donated over $100 million to Birthright Israel, tens of millions of dollars to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, and to the establishment of the Adelson School of Medicine at Ariel University in Samaria.

In 2018, US President Donald Trump honored ‎‎Dr. Adelson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom‎. Adelson was recognized for her work as a philanthropist and ‎humanitarian, and as a doctor specializing in the treatment of ‎narcotic addiction, the White House said‏ at the time. ‏

Various other business leaders were also among the recipients of an honorary degree at Thursday's ceremony, as well as Lt. Gen. (res.) Gadi Eizenkot.

Eizenkot was honored for his contribution to Israel's security and for preserving the values of the Israel Defense Forces when he was chief of the General Staff between 2015 and 2019.

Israel Hayom publisher Dr. Miriam Adelson was awarded on Tuesday an honorary doctorate from Bar-Ilan University for her contributions to medicine.

Dr. Adelson was one of several honorees at a special ceremony Tuesday evening.

In a film clip about her life's work shown at the event, Adelson said, "I'm proud of what I achieved for the Jewish world. I'm proud that I'm standing tall and proud [as] a Jewish woman. Compared to my mother, who grew up in Poland, and left at the age of 18 after she finished high school because she couldn't stand tall [as a Jew].

"There was anti-Semitism there, in Europe and Poland, and I'm so privileged to grow up as a proud Jew.

"I want to continue what I'm doing to help the Jewish people and the state of Israel as much as I can," Dr. Adelson said, adding that she carried with her the memory of her family members who had perished in the Holocaust, as well as "generation after generation" of the Jewish people.

Adelson was born in Israel to parents who immigrated from Poland prior to the Holocaust. She earned a Bachelor of Science in microbiology and genetics from Hebrew University and a medical degree with honors from Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine.‎ She helped develop a methadone program for teen ‎addicts and has co-authored numerous research papers on ‎methadone treatment‏.‏

In 2018, Dr. Adelson was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump.

At the event on Tuesday, Dr. Adelson thanked Bar-Ilan University and its board of trustees for selecting her as a recipient of an honorary doctorate and for being chosen to deliver the acceptance speech on behalf of all other recipients.

"These remarkable men and women have all excelled in their fields: security and settlement, the arts and education, business and philanthropy," she said in her speech. "These remarkable men and women represent what is best about Israel and Judaism, about Zionism."

Adelson talked about her life in Israel and her many efforts to make the world a better place, as well as protect the Jewish people: "I was born here, in Israel, a tzabareet [Hebrew for native-born Israeli], to parents who lost most of their families to the Nazis and found emancipation and strength in the restored Jewish state. I was raised to think independently and to act accordingly – to stand up for what I believe in, even if that means standing alone. I served as an officer in a special Israel Defense Forces unit, doing my part to prevent another Holocaust and to allow Israel to flourish despite the enemies it faces on all sides (except for the Mediterranean sea)."

Adelson said that she "chose medicine as my career in order to liberate people from the bondage of sickness and injury. In treating the disease of drug addiction over the last three decades, I have seen how this liberation radiates out upon society as a whole: It spares addicts' relatives untold distress. And it spares the law enforcement, courts, welfare and health systems needless expense and exertion."

"My husband Sheldon and I are champions of free markets because these enable people to achieve their utmost independence," she continued. "And free markets mean more money for charity – investment in the greater good. Freedom is a deeply Jewish value. But we Jews know how hard it is to achieve and to keep. From the days of Exodus, our nation has struggled against oppression – and for liberation. Striving for freedom is in our DNA. And that is why institutions like Bar-Ilan University are so important."

To make the moment even more special, Israel Hayom Editor-in-Chief Boaz Bismuth presented Dr. Adelson with a special Israel Hayom front page, featuring an article about her and her work.

Adelson married businessman and philanthropist Sheldon Adelson in 1991. Over the years, the two have contributed greatly to educational programs as well as Jewish organizations around the world.

The couple opened their first drug abuse clinic in Tel Aviv in 1993. In 2000, the Adelsons opened the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. ‎Adelson Clinic for Drug Abuse Treatment and Research in Las ‎Vegas to help treat painkiller and opioid addiction.‎

On Monday, Bar-Ilan University President Prof. Arie Zaban praised Dr. Adelson for her contribution to society through the field of medicine, saying she "has practiced internal and emergency medicine and has spent the better part of her professional life in research into finding a cure for the disease of drug addiction. She founded two highly reputed research centers in this field."

NASA released images of the moon on Wednesday that show the spot where Israel's Beresheet spacecraft crash-landed.

The agency said the pictures were captured by its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter from some 56 miles (90 kilometers) above the moon's surface.

"The cameras captured a dark smudge, about 10 meters wide, that indicates the point of impact. The dark tone suggests a surface roughened by the hard landing, which is less reflective than a clean, smooth surface," NASA said.

"There are many clues that we're actually looking at a man-made crater instead of a meteoroid-caused one. This is an important consideration, since the moon, having no atmosphere, is constantly bombarded by space rocks that leave craters," it added.

Israel's first-ever lunar probe was launched into orbit by SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries on February 22 from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Until now, only the United States, Russia and China have been able to successfully land a spacecraft on the Moon.

The Beresheet mission was originally part of the Google Lunar XPrize competition and even made the final cut before the contest ended last year without a winner.

The organizers decided to press ahead on their own and the project was financed largely by philanthropists Dr. Miriam and Sheldon Adelson together with SpaceIL President Morris Kahn at a cost of about $100 million.

The Israel Hayom Group will hold its first conference this June at the Jerusalem Archeological Park — Davidson Center, with former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley as the keynote speaker.

The forum will celebrate the strong bond between Washington and Jerusalem and will deal with a host of subjects, including the bilateral economic relations and trade, cultural ties and technological cooperation.

The forum will have some 500 participants and will be open to the press.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will take part in the event, as will Israel Hayom Publisher Dr. Miriam Adelson and Editor-in-Chief Boaz Bismuth. The speakers include U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and U.S. Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason D. Greenblatt.

Philanthropist and businessman Sylvan Adams, who has dedicated his life to strengthening Israel, will be among the speakers. Other prominent figures from Israel and abroad will attend as well.

During Ms. Haley's time as the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations between 2017 and 2019, the United States stood proudly with its allies, repeatedly taking a strong and principled stand against the chronic anti-Israel bias in the organization.

In the U.N. Security Council, she proudly issued the first American veto in six years defending the United States' sovereign right to move its embassy to Jerusalem – Israel's true capital.

It will be Haley's first visit to Israel since leaving office.

Prior to being appointed ambassador, Haley was elected in 2010 as the first female and first minority governor of South Carolina. She was re-elected in 2014.

Although no longer holding public office, Ms. Haley is still an admired figure in the Republican Party, in the United States and abroad.

Israel Hayom is honored to have her as the keynote speaker in its first conference.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday honored seven ‎‎"extraordinary ‎Americans," ‎among them physician and philanthropist ‎Dr. Miriam Adelson, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom‎.

The medal is the U.S.'s highest ‎civilian honor and is bestowed upon those who have made ‎‎"especially meritorious contributions to the security or national ‎interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other ‎significant public or private endeavors," according to the White ‎House.‎

Adelson was recognized for her work as a philanthropist and ‎humanitarian, and as a doctor specializing in the treatment of ‎narcotic addiction, the White House said‏.‏

During the ceremony, Trump also praised Adelson's efforts on ‎behalf of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. ‎

First Lady Melania Trump, senior cabinet members, U.S. Supreme ‎Court judges and prominent public figures attended the ‎ceremony in the East Room of the White ‎House, where formal events are held.

Other honorees included retiring Utah Senator Orrin ‎Hatch, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, ‎and ‎Supreme Court Justice ‎Alan C. ‎Page‏‎, as well as late Supreme Court ‎Justice Antonin Scalia, music icon Elvis Presley and legendary ‎baseball player Babe Ruth, whose relatives received the awards on ‎their behalf. ‎

Presenting the medal to Adelson, Trump described her as a ‎‎"renowned philanthropist, somebody who has worked so hard – ‎she doesn't have to do it but she does; 24 hours a day, this is what ‎she does. A medical doctor, Miriam has dedicated her life to fighting ‎addiction, something we're all becoming too familiar with.

"Through ‎decades of innovating research, philanthropy and treatment, Miriam ‎has helped thousands break free from their addiction to drugs and ‎alcohol.

‎"In 2006, Miriam and her husband, Sheldon, who is with us today – ‎thank you, Sheldon – established the Adelson Medical Research ‎Foundation to prevent, reduce, or eliminate life-threatening ‎diseases. To protect the sacred heritage of the Jewish faith, Miriam ‎and Sheldon have supported Jewish schools, Holocaust Memorial ‎organizations, and helped Jewish Americans visit the Holy Land.‎

‎"Miriam, I want to thank you very much for saving so many lives ‎and helping so many people to get back to a normal way of life. ‎You've been incredible. I know the work you've done. And you ‎have been truly incredible," Trump said.‎

He also said the Adelsons had spared no effort to see the ‎U.S. Embassy in Israel moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as was done in May.

"They were very happy to see the ‎embassy move to Jerusalem. They were very happy about that. So ‎congratulations on that also. They fought very hard for that, the ‎capital of Israel," ‎Trump said.

In a statement released Saturday, Adelson said she was "deeply ‎humbled and moved by this exceptional honor. Liberty is at the ‎heart of my decades of work against substance abuse. Drug ‎dependency is enslavement, for the user and his or her family and ‎society, and treatment an emancipation‏.‏

"‏Together, my husband, Sheldon, and I have dedicated our lives to ‎freedom: to a free market that benefits the greater good and to ‎philanthropic endeavors that succor those suffering from poverty ‎and disease." ‎

Adelson is the sixth Israeli to receive the prestigious award. Other ‎prominent recipients include late President Shimon Peres (2012), ‎psychologist and Nobel Prize laureate Professor Daniel Kahneman ‎‎(2013), violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman (2015), former ‎Prisoner of Zion Natan Sharansky (2006), and Rachel Harel, a ‎member of the Dutch Resistance against the Nazis during World ‎War II (1946).‎

Adelson, 73, was born in Haifa and was an internist and emergency ‎room physician at Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine. ‎She studied chemical dependency and drug addiction as an ‎exchange student at Rockefeller University in New York, where she ‎met Sheldon Adelson. They married in 1991‎‏.‏

The couple opened their first drug abuse clinic in Tel Aviv in 1993. ‎Miriam Adelson helped develop a methadone program for teen ‎addicts and has co-authored numerous research papers on ‎methadone treatment‏.‏

In 2000, the Adelsons opened the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. ‎Adelson Clinic for Drug Abuse Treatment and Research in Las ‎Vegas to help treat painkiller and opioid addiction.‎

The Adelsons are very active in the Las Vegas Jewish community ‎and generously support many organizations, including Birthright ‎Israel, the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, the Zionist Organization ‎of America, AIPAC, the Anti-Defamation League and more. ‎

The Adelson family owns the company that is the primary shareholder in Israel Hayom.
