Police fired tear gas at protesters in the western city of Nantes. In Rennes, they used water cannons. Also in the west in Lorient, Ouest-France newspaper said projectiles triggered a brief fire in the yard of a police station.

Roissy-Charles De Gaulle airport outside Paris was hit by wildcat action by workers. Near Toulouse in the southwest, burning piles of debris blocked traffic on a highway and sent plumes of smoke into the sky.

Macron broke weeks of silence on the new policy to say he would stand firm and the law would come into force by the end of the year. He compared the protests to the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the US Capitol.

Opinion polls have long shown that a majority of voters were opposed to delaying retirement age by two years to 64.

Voters were further angered by the government's decision last week to push the pension changes through parliament without a vote and by Macron's comments on Wednesday.

The latest wave of protests represents the most serious challenge to the president's authority since the "Yellow Vest" revolt four years ago.

The crisis is a result of continued political turbulence in Peru. Former President Pedro Castillo, Peru's first Andean leader, ordered the dissolution of parliament in December to shorten the third impeachment trial against his fledgling government. Instead, he was indicted by lawmakers, the National Police arrested him before he could find sanctuary, and Boluarte, who had been his vice president, was installed.

Since then, 56 people have died amid the unrest involving Castillo's supporters, 45 of whom died in direct clashes with security forces, according to Peru's government. None of the deaths have been in Lima yet.

Large groups of people from Andean regions have been going to the capital demanding Boluarte's resignation, dissolution of congress, and new elections.

Huge crowds marched in different parts of the Sudanese capital and other cities on Thursday in demonstrations to reject military rule as the crisis in the country's troubled transition from authoritarian rule deepened.

The military has shared power with civilians in a transitional authority since the removal of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019 in a popular uprising after three decades in power.

A coalition of rebel groups and political parties have aligned themselves with the military, which has accused the civilian parties of mismanagement and monopolizing power, and are seeking to dissolve the cabinet. Civilian leaders say this would amount to a coup and say the military aims to install a government it can control.

Thursday's protest took place on the anniversary of the 1964 October Revolution and was preceded by days of smaller neighborhood protests.

Reuters journalists estimated the number of participants to be in the hundreds of thousands, making it the biggest demonstration of the transition.

In the city of Omdurman, protesters were met with heavy tear gas to prevent them from crossing a bridge leading to central Khartoum, witnesses told Reuters. Plumes of smoke could be seen across the city as protesters burned tires and waved Sudanese flags.

Many chants were critical of the head of the ruling Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, accusing him of being loyal to Bashir. Some demanded he hand over leadership to civilians and others demanded his removal.

"This country is ours, and our government is civilian," one chant said.

Several government ministers were seen marching in different parts of Khartoum.

"October 21 is a lesson for any tyrants, loyalists, or opportunists deluded into thinking they can turn back the hands of time," wrote Sovereign Council member Siddig Tawer, one of several civilian officials who endorsed the protests.

Neighborhood resistance committees said in a statement they were protesting the entire power-sharing agreement and demanded sole civilian rule.

Many businesses in central Khartoum were closed in anticipation of the protest and there was an extensive police presence.

The military says it is committed to the transition to democracy and elections at the end of 2023.

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who leads the cabinet under a military-civilian power-sharing agreement, remains popular despite an economic crisis. He has said he is speaking to all sides in the crisis in order to find a solution.

Military-allied groups led by former rebel leaders and current government officials Minni Minnawi and Jibril Ibrahim have held a sit-in in front of the Presidential Palace since Saturday.

Protest routes were planned in different areas away from the downtown area to avoid confrontation with the pro-military sit-in.

"We encourage demonstrators to be peaceful and remind them of the strong US support for Sudan's democratic transition," the US Embassy said in a tweet.

The official Facebook page of the Israeli Embassy in Belarus has been flooded with angry comments in the wake of Israeli Ambassador Alex Goldman-Shayman presenting his credentials to Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.

Lukashenko has been brutally suppressing the protests that erupted in the country after the latest elections demanding the resignation of the authoritarian leader. Some 30,000 protesters have been arrested, and ten civilians had been killed since the beginning of the protests more than 100 days ago.

"What did that feel like, shaking hands with a murderer?" wrote Yulia Girenko on the embassy's official Facebook page.

"You are supporting a fascist regime," wrote Veronika Darchin, a resident of Petach Tikva.

Natalia, a student at Bar-Ilan University, wrote, "I live in Israel, and I am furious. None of my friends and family, not one person, supports the Belarusian Führer. People have to know, this has nothing to do with us, the citizens.

"How can a country with such a tragic history support a tyrant who is massacaring his people?" wrote Katya Syorkova from Minsk.

For months Israel has refrained from condemning the regime's actions in Belarus. Lukashenko's actions have been condemned by the Trump administration and the European Union, which has already imposed a series of sanctions on Belarus. Ambassadors of Namibia, Bangladesh, China, and Cambodia also presented their credentials at the ceremony.

Sadi Ben Shitrit, a radical left-wing Israeli activist and one of the leaders of the "Crime Minister" group, compared Prime Minister Netanyahu to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler at a protest on Wednesday.

"In the 1930s, the leader of Germany oppressed the Jews. He behaved just like you", said Ben Shitrit in a video posted on social media. "There is no pardon for [someone so] corrupt. There is no forgiveness for the destruction and abuse of Israelis. In the 1930s, in Germany, there was a bitter enemy of the Jewish people – he behaved just like you, inciting and destroying," he stated.

Coalition Chairman Miki Zohar condemned Ben Shitrit's statement, saying, he had "crossed a red line by comparing the prime minister to Hitler. It is an act of incitement that is punishable by law. I expect the police to investigate this serious case."

Meanwhile, supporters of the prime minister came under fire on Tuesday for accosting the family of a fallen IDF soldier.

Demonstrators who staged a support rally outside Netanyahu's private residence in Caesarea began, at some point, hurling insults at the Farkash family who live nearby. The family lost their son, Cpt. Tom Farkash, in the 2006  Second Lebanon War and is known to host left-wing demonstrators in their home.

"The fact that you lost a son doesn't give you the right [to host anti-PM protesters]. We will be here as long as you host anarchists under your roof. We will not allow you the freedome of speech you have grown accustomed to," one demonstrator shouted outside the family home.

Turning her attention to the soldier's mother, the protester said, "She abuses IDF soldiers. Yes, look at her, she's used to abusing them. I would strip her of her Israeli citizenship. I wouldn't let her stay here for one more minute."

Senior politicians from across the political spectrum expressed outrage at the incident.

"What happened in front of the Farkash family home is not a protest. This is not our way," President Reuven Rivlin tweeted.

The Likud issued a statement on behalf of the prime minister, condeming the incident: "As someone who experienced the anguish of loss, Prime Minister Netanyahu has always been careful to respect all bereaved families, and this is how everyone should act, on the Right and Left.

"Regardless, everyone must respect the High Court of Justice's ruling stating that it is forbidden to protest less than 300 meters [yards] from the house of a public figure, a ruling that is violated daily outside the prime minister's home in Caesarea."

Blue and White leader Defense Minister Benny Gantz also condemend the incident, tweeting, "As someone who has lost many brothers in arms, I feel ashamed. Some lines cannot be crossed. The incitment and polarization will lead us nowhere,"

Responding to the protesters, Anat Farkash, the fallen soldier's mother, said that while Netanyahu is a public figure and can afford to protect his residence, it was "shameful that the Israel Police allowed protesters to stand outside the home of private citizens." The prime minister's house, she added, "has fences, blakcout curtains and protective measures. For us, the average citizen they [the police] allow [protesters] to spew hatred for an hour.

"Dear Likudniks, our Tom died for you, too. We all deserve better," she said.

The longstanding protest encampment outside of the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem, which was recently removed, had been operating for years without a permit from the Jerusalem Municipality, Israel Hayom learned Monday.

The encampment, which previously consisted of a small number of people holding signs, has become a flashpoint in the growing social unrest of the past few weeks, prompted by what protests say is the government's failure to deal with the second coronavirus outbreak.

At least 18 people were killed in clashes between anti-government protesters and police in Baghdad overnight, according to police and medical sources, as the cabinet tried to appease public anger over corruption and unemployment with a new reform plan.

The scale of the protests, in which nearly 100 people have died since Tuesday, has taken the authorities by surprise. Two years after the defeat of Islamic State, security is better than it has been in years, but corruption is rampant, wrecked infrastructure has not been rebuilt and jobs remain scarce.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi's 17-point plan was the result of an emergency cabinet meeting on Saturday night and comes after days of offering only vague reform promises.

It includes increased subsidized housing for the poor, stipends for the unemployed as well as training programs and small loans initiatives for unemployed youth.

The families of those killed during demonstrations this week will also get payouts and care usually granted to members of the security forces killed during war.

"Amid all of this, I swear to God that my only concern is for the casualties," Abdul Mahdi said during the cabinet meeting, according to state TV.

The streets of the capital were quiet so far on Sunday. Protests have tended to gather steam later in the day.

The clashes shattered a day of relative calm on Saturday after authorities lifted a curfew and traffic moved normally in the center of Baghdad. Hundreds of security personnel were deployed in the streets.

The demonstrations began in Baghdad on Tuesday but have spread quickly spread to other cities mainly in the south.

In the city of Nasiriya, where at least 18 people were killed during the week, police fired live rounds at demonstrators on Saturday. Twenty-four people were wounded in the clashes overnight, including seven policemen, according to security, hospital and morgue sources.

Protesters also torched the headquarters of several political parties in Nasiriya, police said. These included the headquarters of the powerful Dawa party that dominated Iraq's government from 2003 until 2018 elections.

Violence also broke out again in Diwaniya, another city south of Baghdad killing at least one person, police said.

The cabinet's new plan may not be enough to placate protesters and the politicians who've sided with them.

Opposition to the government among parliamentary blocs who have begun boycotting legislative meetings is already brewing, adding pressure on Abdul Mahdi and his cabinet to step down.

Influential Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who has a mass popular following and controls a large chunk of parliament, demanded on Friday that the government resign and snap elections be held. At least one other major parliamentary grouping allied itself with Sadr against the government.

But powerful political parties which have dominated Iraqi politics since the 2003 US-led invasion and toppling of dictator Saddam Hussein have not indicated they are willing to relinquish the institutions they control.

In eastern Baghdad on Friday and Saturday, police snipers shot at demonstrators and several people were wounded, Reuters reporters said.

Security services said the violence killed 8 members of the security forces and wounded more than 1,000, state television reported.

At least 95 demonstrators have died across Iraq, according to a Reuters tally based on police and medical sources. Iraq's semi-official High Commission for Human Rights had put the toll at 99 dead since protests broke out on Tuesday.

The unrest is the deadliest Iraq has seen since the declared defeat of Islamic State in 2017 and has shaken Abdul Mahdi's year-old government. Iraqis fear the violence will continue to escalate.

The violence continued as people began journeying across southern Iraq for the Shiite pilgrimage of Arbaeen, which is expected to attract 20 million worshippers.
