The suspected perpetrator, 39-year-old Brooklyn resident Sharee Jones, had allegedly been recorded by a surveillance camera at a nearby convenience store dressed in all black and seemingly purchasing a red gasoline can. She then proceeded to approach the yeshiva, douse the surrounding area in gasoline, and set it on fire.

Luckily, one of the school's security guards on location at the time had witnessed what had taken place and managed to put out the fire with water, leaving no casualties or wounded behind in this incident. However, it has left the area, home to one of the greatest communities of Holocaust survivors outside of Israel, deeply unsettled.

According to NYPD spokesman Detective Hubert Reyes, the 51-year-old victim was walking down a street in Brooklyn, NY, on July 11 when occupants in a blue SUV began yelling anti-Semitic slurs at him. The victim answered them back, and "two men in the vehicle stepped out and punched the victim in the head."

The assailants drove off while the victim walked to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for a laceration to his head and a broken finger on his right hand.

"We are alarmed and deeply disturbed that another violent anti-Semitic incident has occurred in Brooklyn," said Etzion Neuer, interim regional director of the New York/New Jersey ADL. "This is horrific, and the hate must stop. The fact that this alleged attack took place during the Sabbath makes it even more egregious."

The ADL is offering a reward of up to $10,000 information leading to the arrest and conviction of the attackers.

Even though it has a large and heavily Orthodox Jewish population, Brooklyn is no stranger to anti-Semitic incidents.

In December 2019 and January 2020, incidents were reported on a near-weekly basis. In one case, Tiffany Harris, an African-American woman, slapped three different Orthodox Jewish women in Brooklyn. She was arrested and released under the state's new bail-reform law, only to hit another individual shortly afterward and was again arrested for assault.

British police on Friday launched an investigation into alleged anti-Semitic hate crimes in the opposition Labour Party, whose leadership has faced criticism about the way it has handled complaints by Jewish groups.

London's Metropolitan Police said Commissioner Cressida Dick had been given a folder of documents in September, including alleged evidence of anti-Semitic hate crimes.

"The contents have been examined by specialist officers," a police statement said. "A criminal investigation has commenced into some of the allegations within the documentation."

Dick told BBC Radio the allegations relate to an online crime.

In response, Labour issued a statement saying the party has "a robust system for investigating complaints of alleged breaches of Labour Party rules by its members.

"Where someone feels they have been a victim of crime, they should report it to the police in the usual way."

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has faced criticism for his handling of complaints about anti-Semitism in his party. Earlier this year, he acknowledged anti-Semitism had surfaced in the party and apologized for the pain this had caused.

Jewish leaders have described his response as a "disappointing missed opportunity."

Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson said the allegations are "thoroughly depressing, although sadly I'm not surprised."

"If people have committed hate crimes, then they need to be dealt with by the full force of the law. There's no role for them in the Labour Party," he told BBC Radio.

A report in February by the Community Security Trust, a charity that provides security advice to the country's Jewish communities, said anti-Jewish sentiment was becoming more commonplace in Britain.

It said publicity about alleged anti-Jewish sentiment in the Labour Party had been partly to blame for a record number of anti-Semitic incidents in Britain last year.
