Not much was missing for Fadila Maaroufi to be unable to tell her story. She simply expressed a desire to live her own way – freely, without a hijab or other restrictions. But in her childhood neighborhoods in Brussels, where radical Islam kept gaining ground, she nearly paid the ultimate price. "First came warnings, then threats. One day it escalated to something far more serious – a group of about 15 young men surrounded me. They poured gasoline around me and lit a lighter. Behind me was a wooden fence – I had nowhere to run. They laughed and filmed me. The gasoline ignited, and a fire broke out. A colleague who saw what was happening from a distance came running and put out the flames. He saved me."

Her story should have resonated throughout Europe. A Belgian woman of Moroccan origin who doesn't fold even under threats of violence, continuing to lead – sometimes almost alone – the battle against the Islamism that's drowning her country. Everywhere decent people live, she should have become a cultural hero – someone the West, and perhaps the entire sane world, must listen to. And in Israel, unlike Belgium, people actually want to listen. This coming Sunday she'll deliver a lecture at the Begin Center in Jerusalem, and would be happy, she said, to speak face-to-face with anyone who lends an ear.

She was born in 1976, from a family of eight children. Born in the Belgian capital, third generation to hardworking immigrants from North Africa, and grew up in neighborhoods now considered off-limits for anyone not belonging to Islam. Back then, in the 1980s, it was different.

"In my childhood there, 'Belgian Belgians' still mixed with Italian, Spanish, Moroccan and Turkish immigrants," she recalls with longing. "It was a time of carefree joy and happy closeness. Children played in the street, mothers chatted through open windows, or gossiped in the street when they went shopping."

Maaroufi witnessed the shattering of this idyll up close. According to her, it was a slow process that continued in one dangerous direction – one that now threatens not just her. "Things changed. Mosques were built in the neighborhood. The sermons heard within them took on a tone of fanaticism, of control, of fear. Young people – my friends, my neighbors – surrendered to the charms of a faith different from that of our grandparents. Those first arrivals from the villages didn't know how to read or write and lived a simple Islam, almost rural, full of traditions, celebrations and quiet modesty. Their dream was to work, save money, and return to die in their homeland. Our parents, for their part, lived according to the fashion of their time, torn between two worlds. But since the 1990s a strange revolution occurred – their children began judging them, accusing them that their Islam was too soft and supposedly not authentic. Thus was born a generation of little inquisitors, educated in Brussels schools but thirstily drinking in the Wahhabist sermons coming from Saudi Arabia, and the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood imported from Egypt."

Q: So radical Islam swept the children's minds, specifically in Belgium?

"In my public school, each group had a religion class – Catholic, Jewish, Islamic, or secular ethics. The teacher of Islam who taught us, as I discovered years later, was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood movement. Five years later, I saw him in a newspaper photo, smiling broadly and marketing the new school, affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, somewhere in Brussels. What I felt as a teenager received full confirmation – the radicalization wasn't born from nowhere, it took root and grew slowly in our classrooms, in the organizations around us, in our homes. Over the years, I watched how the youth in Brussels changed. The gaze hardened, speech came under supervision, and faith became a matter of internal policing. Everyone observed the other, judged, calculated the neighbor's 'sins' and felt obligated to preach to others to spread the religion, as Islam commands."

Streets of rage

Fadila Maaroufi didn't leave the alleys of her childhood, even after they began changing their face. She studied, became a social worker, and spent 20 years in the increasingly radicalized neighborhoods trying to listen, calm, and understand their residents. The experience of this encounter troubles her peace to this day. "I saw there domestic violence, daily humiliations, girls dying of fear because of 'what will they say,' boys going crazy with shame over getting closer to the West and aspiring to atone for the 'sin' of their 'betrayal,'" she recounts. That's also when the attack that nearly cost her life occurred, and afterward, she could no longer remain silent.

"I wanted to understand, to know where the hatred came from that uglified my city and my childhood. In the years that followed, young people I knew, some barely adults, traveled to fight in Syria. Some died there for an imaginary caliphate. Meanwhile, in Belgian media and universities, experts discussed social poverty, discrimination, and the search for meaning. They clung to convenient but wrong explanations. I knew it wasn't poverty leading to jihad, but rather ideology taught over a long time, receiving justification in the name of political Islam, and mixed with difficult feelings stemming from experiences of violence within the family. In Islam, waging jihad to spread the faith isn't a deviation but an ancient tradition, considered an obligation. It was necessary to call evil by its name. To look it in the face, otherwise it will repeat itself endlessly. Therefore, I chose to speak for the young people who grew up with Muslim backgrounds and rejected violence, and to warn the others – the non-Muslims, the disconnected Europeans – about what awaits them if they continue to close their eyes. And I started by saying loudly and clearly – the first victims will always be the Jews."

Q: Was there a specific moment when you understood the depth of Islamist radicalization in Belgian society?

"The awareness awakened gradually, starting from the end of my adolescence. The speeches of people from the 'Islamic Salvation Front' in Algeria, heard in some mosques and among families, heralded what was to come. It was clear that sooner or later, this violence would also erupt in the West. We were aware of it, but no one shared the warnings with non-Muslims. Such things weren't customary to share with them. Then, on September 11, 2001, everything became clear. When you come from a Muslim family, you pick up the codes, the hints. The young people who traveled to fight in Syria and Iraq only accelerated a movement that already existed, born from the Mujahideen war in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union. In the 1980s, it was a marginal phenomenon, but after 2001, everything changed. The giant collapsed before the eyes of the Muslim world. The attacks in Europe, our leaders' inaction, and especially the experts' inability to give a real explanation for the problem – all these made me understand we're facing big trouble. The peace we knew wouldn't hold. Since 2005, the attacks and assaults no longer surprised me – but the West's inaction actually did surprise."

Q: The Islamists actually acted – they threatened to murder you.

"They directly called to punish and kill me. The most frightening threat came with an ISIS video showing different execution methods – slaughter, burning alive in a cage, and beheading. It displayed real scenes, alongside wishes that I die a slow and painful death. It didn't stop there. They chased me, threatened to harm me physically, conducted a campaign of legal harassment against me. I lost my job, they no longer give me the right to speak in French-language media in Belgium. I can't work anymore."

Q: How did family members and friends react?

"My family has shunned me since I supported Israel, and over time it's gotten worse. Some of my friends are afraid to meet with me, others don't want to talk about these things, they prefer to live in denial. In the end, my real friends stayed and I built myself a different family, one I chose."

Willfully blind

Q: What do you think is the scope of radical Islamist influence today in Belgium, compared to the previous decade or two?

"The influence is absolute. In my view Belgium has fallen under Islamist control, especially that of the Muslim Brotherhood. And it will only get worse, because Hamas members and Hamas supporters have been welcome in Belgium since October 7, 2023. We literally brought here people who will turn Belgium into Lebanon. The danger already looms from within Belgium, while the state still sleeps, whether out of opportunism or cowardice. Ultimately this will affect all the West, because Belgium houses the European institutions and NATO."

Q: Haven't the authorities in Belgium internalized the severity of the problem?

"I think at first they really weren't aware of it. When they started to catch on, they thought they could control the Islamists to win Muslim votes. In the end, when they understood, it was already too late."

Q: In what forms does the radicalization express itself?

"The Islamists advance quietly in every sector and every area of society – in schools, children and parents pressure teachers and administration on issues like wearing hijab and supplying halal meals. At universities, student organizations connected to the Muslim Brotherhood movements invite lectures by terrorists, or extreme figures like Francesca Albanese and Rima Hassan. Islamist influence reaches everywhere – political parties, associations, mosques, transportation, security services, social networks, the justice system and other arenas."

Q: What role does foreign funding from Qatar or Turkey play in spreading Islamism in Europe?

"Very large sums, which fueled the process, indeed arrived from abroad. Now there's slightly more supervision of this matter, but the Islamists receive funding for non-profit projects also through European institutions and from Belgian authorities. And we mustn't forget the phenomenon of dual citizenship, which allows transferring money to Belgium from the country of origin without declaring it."

The deterioration Maaroufi describes could have been prevented if Europe hadn't been blind to what was happening. In her view, this is willful blindness. Those charged with protecting Europe from the Islamist plague refuse to admit its existence and silence the watchmen at the gate. "It's a tyranny of political correctness," Maaroufi said. "They even forbid using terms that define the problem, with claims of 'Islamophobia.' Increasingly, people are preventing themselves from thinking and speaking. There's real self-censorship – as if not to offend Muslims, or simply out of fear they'll slap you with an extreme right label or murder you. Since the assassinations of Samuel Paty and Dominique Bernard, people are very frightened. European elites hesitate to speak openly about Islamist extremism, because they're already infected by Islamists who did the work from within – carried out a value inversion, where victims become the convicted and the convicted become victims."

Maaroufi's battle against Islamization is inseparable from her feminist views. For her, these are two faces of the same aspiration for freedom. "To be feminist is to demand for women full autonomy over their bodies, thoughts, and destinies," she explained. "Feminism fights a hierarchy based on gender affiliation; Islamism sanctifies it. It accepts male rule as a moral obligation, turns women's bodies into a religious and social issue, and confines women to the role of guardians of the group's honor. The hijab, according to this logic, isn't a simple clothing item – it's the flag of the Islamism project. It marks that the woman doesn't completely belong to herself – she becomes symbolic territory that must be protected from the 'impurities' of the modern world.

"I refuse to have them explain to girls born in Europe that they must hide themselves to 'respect' themselves. I refuse to have them learn that their freedom is a provocation, or that their liberation endangers community morality. My feminism isn't a slogan – it stems from personal experience. For more than 20 years, as a social worker, I saw the real effects of Islamization in working-class neighborhoods – regression in women's freedoms, pressure on the female body, insults over jeans considered too tight, refusal to meet with others, and fear of shame. I saw girls erasing themselves so stigmas won't be cast on them, women giving up work, recreation, and laughter. Feminism, for me, is refusing this erasure."

Q: Here again, you're headed for an unavoidable collision with Belgian elites, who are strong in talking about feminism but surrender immediately when the harm to women comes from the direction of Islamism.

"The hardest challenge is really the blindness of the left and non-Muslims, who gave up on the idea of helping liberate Muslim women. In effect, they're telling us to stay in our place, stay imprisoned. I think they made me a deterring example. Many people see the prices I was required to pay, understand the risks are enormous, including mortal danger, and don't dare express themselves openly."

Q: What's your opinion on bans on wearing hijab and niqab, a subject discussed more and more throughout Europe?

"I think they should be banned in schools, universities, and among minors. This is a norm that draws separation between devout believers and non-believers, and also between men and women. This norm is imposed as an obligation, and when someone decides to remove the covering, she must expect trouble, pressure, attacks, and harassment."

Q: Do Muslim girls in Europe feel torn between Islam and modernity?

"Not necessarily. Many of them simply fear rejection by family and community if they choose to be themselves. Becoming free sometimes means risking everything – family status, relationships, social security. Personally, I've never felt as good as I do now that I've freed myself from the pressure and lies my community taught me from childhood. The last three generations of Muslim women in the West underwent Islamist brainwashing, and it worked – the first and second generations of women aspired to freedom, while the current young generation is confused. The women in it allow others to influence them, and get dragged into believing they want to become slaves by choice."

"Democracy for us, not for Jews"

Although two years have passed since the October 7 massacre, Maaroufi doesn't forget how the Muslim communities reacted to the horrors the Gazans committed in the Gaza border communities. The initial reaction was silence, and immediately after, hostility toward Jews and Israel erupted. "The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has always served as glue for uniting the Muslim community," Maaroufi noted. "There's no longer room for any thinking, and whoever raises doubt about the justification for the attacks becomes an enemy of the Islamic nation."

Unlike most Muslims in Belgium, Maaroufi expressed solidarity with the victims of the Israeli massacre. "I was deeply horrified by the horrific acts the terrorists committed – the lives of children, babies, women, and men, cut down horrifyingly. If we support humanism, we can't ignore the massacre victims. I salute in my heart all the victims of the October 7 massacre, their family members, and the IDF soldiers who fell. Israel defended its people, but in my view, also the stability of our entire Western democracy. On October 7, the monster was released. I fear this isn't an isolated incident – as long as we don't fight Islamic antisemitism firmly, we'll remain vulnerable."

Q: What image does Israel have in the Belgian public, and how much does Islamist propaganda influence it?

"Many Belgians support Israel and Jews, but fear is felt – people who aren't Jewish tell me, in secret, that they support Israel but suffer verbal or physical attacks when they express it publicly. In practice, only support for Palestinians can be expressed without risk. As long as political leaders don't adopt clear discourse, and as long as part of the media funded by our tax money continues spreading narratives that favor Hamas and Islamists, the dark ideologies will strengthen."

Q: Have you faced backlash in Belgium for your support of Israel?

"Yes, and it only intensified since October 7. Since 2023, the pressure and propaganda against me have pushed me to increase appearances and conferences, to explain the situation and mobilize support for the Jewish community, which often falls victim to attacks. To illustrate, consider the following recent case. Last month, I participated in a rally for the hostages and against antisemitism. After we marched, a group of about 15 rally participants entered a cafe in Albertine Square. When we wanted to leave, two people approached us shouting, 'We'll beat you, we'll beat the Israelis and Jews.' A very tense atmosphere developed, and we were forced to escape inside. I called the police. The place manager helped some people hide behind the bar, and friends intervened to protect the most vulnerable. One attacker, apparently the leader, shouted at those trying to calm down, 'Democracy is for us, not for Jews.' Police finally intervened, and two people were arrested thanks to a photo taken by a witness of the incident. They finally escorted us to a safe place, but the harassment continued even there, when one car honked, aiming to frighten us. We submitted all the material to the police, including photos, but to this day, no real legal action has been taken."

Q: What message would you like to convey to the Israeli public, which also lives under the threat of radical Islamism?

"Don't give up. Here too, in Belgium, we're fighting for you and for our society. We share the same enemies, so we must learn from our shared experiences and cooperate. We aspire to protect our children and ensure a future of peace. We must fight to prevent violence and Islamist ideology from taking over."

Three DJs canceled their performances at Amsterdam's De Lofft club in recent days after discovering the venue hosted parties commemorating those killed at the Nova Festival massacre. According to Dutch newspaper Telegraaf, the club owner said the cancellations occurred because the events were labeled as "Jewish."

The cancellations happened during the ADE music festival, one of the world's largest electronic music events, after a video from a "We Will Dance Again" party held at the venue earlier this year surfaced online. Following the controversy, club management announced that, for now, no more events "that could be interpreted as political" will be hosted at the venue.

The club owner said financial losses from the cancellations total approximately 100,000 euros ($106,000), adding that partygoers are the main victims. The owner said the published video "was edited in a biased manner and damaged the venue's reputation."

Event organizers for "We Will Dance Again" criticized the decision, calling it "surrender to threats." The organizers said, "A small group of people uses pressure and threats to dictate what's permitted and what's forbidden, and this is very disturbing." The organizers added that this represents a chilling recreation of patterns of Jewish exclusion from public spaces during dark periods in history. "First, they banned sitting on a bench, then they didn't allow entry to schools. These are things that happened to our parents and grandparents, and now we're seeing similar things happen again," the organizers said.

Belgian parliament member Sam van Rooy also addressed the incidents and warned, "If the cowardly policies continue, Amsterdam will eventually become Judenrein" – cleansed of Jews.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded Wednesday to the Belgian government's decision to recognize a Palestinian state in the coming month and impose various sanctions on Israel. In his statement on the prime minister's official X account in English, Netanyahu wrote that Belgium's prime minister, De Wever, is a weak leader seeking to appease Islamic terror by sacrificing Israel. "He wants to feed the terrorist crocodile before it devours Belgium. Israel won't go along and will continue to defend itself."

Monday night, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot announced that Belgium will recognize a Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly session in September, with conditions set for signing the official decree, including the release of all hostages held by Hamas and the removal of the terror organization from power in Gaza. Simultaneously, in the nighttime government session, a series of sanctions against Israel were approved, including imposing sanctions against Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

"Belgium will recognize Palestine at the UN!" Prévot tweeted. "We are taking harsh sanctions against the Israeli government." According to him, the decision stems from "the humanitarian tragedy in Palestine, especially in Gaza" and in response to "Israeli violence that violates international law."

The decision was made after a dramatic night of negotiations that lasted until the early hours of the night. Coalition parties in Belgium, characterized by a complex political structure of federal government and regional governments, dealt with deep disagreements around policy toward Israel. Some parties pushed for taking a more decisive stance, while others sought a balanced approach, with voices within the ruling party itself supporting sanctions against Israel.

Belgium's federal government and the regional government of Flanders have agreed on a measures package in response to the Gaza war, including conditional recognition of a Palestinian state. Belgium will first announce its intention to recognize a Palestinian state by signing the New York Declaration, a step toward a two-state solution, but full legal recognition will only come if certain conditions are met, such as the release of all hostages and the removal of Hamas from the Palestinian leadership.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said the decision stemmed from "the unfolding humanitarian tragedy in Palestine, especially in Gaza," as well as "violence carried out by Israel in violation of international law." She stressed that the move was "not about punishing the Israeli people, but about ensuring that our government respects international law and humanitarian law, and about taking action to change the reality on the ground."

The Belgian government also announced 12 sanctions against Israel. These include a ban on importing products from the West Bank, a review of public procurement policy involving Israeli companies, limiting consular assistance to Belgians living in settlements deemed illegal under international law, exploring legal action and flight restrictions, and declaring two "extremist Israeli ministers" persona non grata in Belgium.

Despite the declaration, Prévot set clear conditions for formal recognition. "Being fully aware of the trauma inflicted on the Israeli people by Hamas on October 7, 2023, the formalization of recognition by royal decree will only take place once the last hostage has been freed and Hamas is no longer involved in the governance of Palestine."

Belgium also committed to "helping rebuild Palestine and pushing for European measures against Hamas." Prévot promised new Belgian initiatives to fight antisemitism, further mobilization of all security services, and cooperation with representatives of Jewish communities.

The JID organization for combating antisemitism revealed this morning (Friday) a serious incident involving a 9-year-old patient who came for medical treatment at the hospital in the town of Knokke in Belgium. After the girl received medical treatment, the doctor wrote a detailed report with several sections stating she suffered from "traumatic pain in the lower part of the left arm," and when he reached the section where the girl's medical "allergies" were to be recorded, he wrote "Jewish (Israeli)," apparently without any visible medical reason.

JID organization's investigation reveals the doctor is of Middle Eastern origin, with videos and messages in Arabic against Israel on his Facebook page. The organization announced that this morning, a complaint will be filed with law enforcement authorities and the medical establishment in the country and strongly attacked the "marking of Jews" carried out by the doctor.

According to the organization, not only is this an official antisemitic statement documented in the girl's medical file, but it also constitutes a "blatant violation of medical ethics. The fact that a doctor, whose duty is to treat every patient with dignity and without bias, would insert such a statement into a medical record constitutes a disgrace to the Belgian healthcare system. The JID organization will take immediate legal and disciplinary action and demands that both the hospital and the Belgian Medical Council address the matter with utmost seriousness."

The organization announced that this morning, a complaint will be filed with law enforcement authorities and the medical establishment in the country and strongly attacked the "marking of Jews" carried out by the doctor

They added: "Antisemitism must never become the norm, especially not in an official medical document concerning a child. We call on the competent authorities to respond firmly and show that antisemitism in any form will never be tolerated. The case raises difficult questions about the culture of the medical profession and the need for additional training and education to prevent expressions of hatred in essential public institutions like hospitals."

According to Ralph Pace, chairman of the JID organization for combating antisemitism, "This case is of maximum severity. Writing such an antisemitic note in a girl's medical report crosses every red line. JID will pursue every possible legal and disciplinary avenue, and we expect the hospital and the Medical Council to act quickly and decisively."

The "quiet" phenomenon where Jews fear seeking medical treatment in medical institutions has been percolating beneath the surface for a long time, and even more so since October 7. Cases where Jews encountered hostility or expressed concern about hostility from medical staff are already known in countries like Ireland, Britain, Norway, and others. In many cases, Jews prefer to downplay their Judaism when receiving medical treatment.

A senior Belgian ruling party official sparked international controversy Tuesday by delivering an outrageous parliamentary statement equating Israel with Hamas terrorists.

"Don't know who's a bigger villain, Israel or Hamas," Matthias Diependaele said in a speech before the Flemish Parliament. Diependaele, who heads one of Belgium's three regions, belongs to the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), the same center-right party led by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, which includes numerous Israel supporters.

Diependaele's statement represents another example of a growing wave of center-right Europeans expressing harsh criticism against Israel.

Parliament member Sam van Rooy from the right-wing Vlaams Belang party, a staunch Israel supporter, attacked fiercely. "The Flemish Alliance has completely surrendered to leftist pressure and no longer has a moral compass. He compares a free society and democratic state, existentially threatened, to a gang of murderous Muslim terrorists," he said.

Van Rooy added, "This is why I continue responding to the anti-Israeli debate, constantly fed by leftist parties and traditional parties - it causes masks to fall. Israel is a litmus test. Now we know that, unfortunately, Flanders is controlled by a prime minister who cannot distinguish between good and evil."

The outrageous statement comes after Diependaele refused to send "Happy New Year" greetings to the Jewish community, a Belgian custom spanning over a century. Initially, his "advisory cabinet" explained the refusal stemmed from "the sensitive situation in the Middle East." After a storm erupted over linking holiday greetings to the Middle East situation, Diependaele changed his reasoning and claimed he "does not customarily send greetings for religious holidays" of any religion.

The nearly century-old tradition of Belgium's Jewish community requesting holiday greetings from government leaders met an unprecedented end when Flanders Provincial President Matthias Diependaele declined their customary New Year blessing request with a series of conflicting justifications that sparked immediate political controversy.

The initial rejection letter from Diependaele's cabinet explicitly cited Middle East tensions as grounds for avoiding any Jewish community engagement. "Anything related, however slightly, to this conflict is under close monitoring and examined under a magnifying glass," the cabinet wrote to Jewish community leaders, adding they could not "respond to your request" for traditional new year greetings due to regional sensitivities.

When public outrage erupted over the explanation, Diependaele personally intervened with a second letter attempting to reframe his refusal. Rather than acknowledging error, the provincial president claimed his rejection stemmed from a 15-year policy of avoiding all religious activities, including Muslim Eid celebrations and Catholic Te Deum services.

"My refusal stems solely from the principle that for more than 15 years in my role as a people's representative, I have not supported religious activities," Diependaele wrote in his personal clarification. "I am convinced that no religion, including mine, plays any role in fulfilling my mandate."

The explanatory shift drew fierce criticism from opposition politicians who characterized both justifications as discriminatory and cowardly. Parliament Member Sam van Rooy from the Vlaams Belang party accused Diependaele's cabinet of influence from "extreme left people who are either Jew haters or cowards, or the combination of both."

Van Rooy specifically targeted the ruling N-VA party's apparent policy evolution, noting that after initially supporting Israel following October 7, the party now appears to be "turning against Israel as a result of pressure from the left in the country, including from some coalition parties."

"The letter he sent afterward made matters worse and only intensified criticism," van Rooy said. "He is still not willing to wish Jews 'happy new year' because he wants to be neutral, and that's just nonsense."

The controversy emerges against a backdrop of escalating antisemitic incidents in Belgium's major cities, particularly in Antwerp and Brussels, where Jewish community leaders report unprecedented levels of street harassment and attacks. Van Rooy emphasized that this timing makes official support more crucial than ever.

"Especially now, when Jews are under attack, the level of antisemitism in the streets of Antwerp and Brussels is skyrocketing. This is the time to show support for Jews and wish them a happy new year. It's simply a shame," the politician concluded.

The Hind Rajab Foundation, an anti-Israeli organization dedicated to pursuing IDF soldiers internationally, has submitted a formal complaint to Belgian authorities targeting two IDF soldiers currently in Boom, Belgium. According to a statement published on the organization's website, the foundation collaborated with the legal group GLAN to file the complaint with federal prosecutors in Brussels, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of both individuals under international law.

In a statement on their website, the foundation said the following: "These individuals are not fringe actors or incidental participants. They are directly implicated in some of the most egregious crimes committed during Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza, including:Indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas, homes, and hospitals; The use of torture and human shields;Mass arbitrary detention and forced displacement of civilians; And the deliberate infliction of conditions calculated to destroy the Palestinian population, consistent with genocide under Article 6 of the Rome Statute and the Genocide Convention."

Both soldiers are attending, alongside thousands of other Israelis, the "Tomorrowland" electronic music festival, among the world's premier events of its genre and a major attraction for European youth. The organization withheld the soldiers' identities, presumably for legal considerations.

Last week's festival events, scheduled to continue on Friday, transformed into venues for multiple pro-Israel displays, featuring Israeli flag presentations and interactions between Israeli and Iranian attendees.

The Hind Rajab Foundation expressed fury over the display of a Givati Brigade flag by festival participants during one performance. "The Givati flag, publicly displayed in the heart of Belgium, is not just a military symbol. It has become, for millions, a symbol of impunity, destruction, and ethnic cleansing. Its appearance in Boom raises urgent political questions: Why are those involved in grave international crimes able to walk freely, celebrate in public, and glorify their actions without consequence?" it said.

More than 100 pro-Palestinian vandals inflicted over $1.1 million in damage to Ukrainian military equipment during a raid on a Belgian defense facility this week, demonstrating how misguided activism can harm unintended victims.

The activists from the "Stop Arming Israel" movement broke into the OIP Land Systems hangar in Tournai, Belgium, where they vandalized armored vehicles with hammers, spray-painted graffiti, and shattered windows. The equipment they destroyed was destined for Ukrainian forces battling Russian aggression, not Israeli military units.

The company has provided hundreds of armored vehicles to Ukraine since Russia's invasion began. The antisemitic organization declared they had identified "10 Belgian companies with connections to Israeli armament," though OIP Land Systems operates as part of OIP Sensor Systems – a subsidiary of Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems.

Freddy Versluys, the company's president, clarified, "We don't sell anything to Israel. The vandals entered the hangar and damaged extensive equipment. The only damage they caused is a one-month delay in delivering the vehicles to Ukraine."

The Tournai facility contains one of Europe's largest private weapons stockpiles and has been actively involved in supplying military equipment to Ukraine, including tanks and armored vehicles for the war effort against Russia.

Belgium's parliament is set to convene Thursday to discuss a provocative performance staged in central Brussels that simulated the murder of Jewish civilians. The display, part of a so-called "Resistance Festival," featured music glorifying terrorism against Israel and slogans calling for its destruction. Some participants were seen wearing Belgian military uniforms.

The footage, first published by Israel Hayom, triggered swift condemnation. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken called for a formal investigation, stating it was unacceptable for military symbols to be exploited for what he termed "terror propaganda." Francken instructed authorities to determine whether any of those involved had ties to the Belgian armed forces. "If it turns out that military personnel or Defense Ministry staff were involved, there will be consequences," he warned.

The mayor of the Brussels district of Saint-Gilles also launched an internal and police inquiry, calling the video "disturbing." The performance resembled a reenactment of the October 7 Hamas massacre in Israel, showing actors in keffiyehs simulating gunfire at unarmed civilians, who lay on the ground pretending to be corpses. The scene was set to chants of "Free Palestine" and "From the river to the sea," against a backdrop of Palestinian flags. At the end, four participants brandished wooden rifles in a victory salute.

Israel's Ambassador to Belgium, Idit Rosenzweig-Abu, expressed disbelief in a social media post: "At first I couldn't believe something like this could be filmed in Brussels. But it's real. Here in Brussels. A reenactment of the October 7 massacre. Blood and bodies on the ground. All of it. Organized by none other than the Samidoun organization. How is this happening in Belgium?"

Although the Saint-Gilles municipality initially approved the event citing "freedom of expression," the mayor later said he had cautioned the organizers against overstepping legal boundaries. After viewing the footage, he reversed course, stating, "Several scenes can be interpreted as incitement to violence and glorification of terrorism. Our municipality cannot be a venue for events that incite hatred and undermine the democratic model to which we are deeply committed. Personally, I do not believe such imagery helps the Palestinian cause, which at this time urgently needs a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian aid."

One of the most outspoken critics was MP Sam Van Rooy of the right-wing Vlaams Belang party, who shared the video on his Facebook page. "The mayor's response is too little, too late," Van Rooy said. "His condemnation is laughable - warning Samidoun not to promote hate or violence is as naive as thinking one can strike a deal with Iran."

Van Rooy criticized Belgium's immigration policy, which he claims enables the influx of radical Islamists unwilling to integrate. He plans to bring the video to Thursday's parliamentary session and urge authorities to address incitement against Jews and the West. Speaking to Israel Hayom, Van Rooy said: "Many Belgians are like the proverbial frog in the pot. At first the warm water feels nice, but by the time it realizes it's boiling, it's too late."

He warned that Belgium is beginning to resemble 1930s Europe: "Our country has become a hub for supporters of extremist Islamist organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood, Samidoun, and the Taliban - groups that should be banned immediately. Many Middle Eastern immigrants believe Muslim extremists' hatred of Jews and the West is justified. This population is growing, and in some electoral districts there are already prominent Muslim politicians affiliated with these extremist movements. While they may not publicly support anti-Israel or antisemitic demonstrations, many quietly enable them because they share those views."

Van Rooy, who also serves on Antwerp's city council, painted a grim picture: "There have been significant antisemitic incidents recently - verbal and physical assaults. In Antwerp, attacks on Jews have become routine and go unpunished. Even when perpetrators are caught, the penalties are laughable. I shudder to think what would happen if a visibly Jewish person had passed through that festival in the city square, where people shouted 'Free Palestine' and 'From the river to the sea,' which calls for Israel's destruction. They likely would have been attacked. If this continues, the 2030s will look like the 1930s. A society where Jews can be assaulted and calls to kill and burn them are made in public without fear of punishment will take us back a hundred years to a dark chapter Europe should never revisit."
