Local police noted that at approximately 6 a.m. on Nov. 28, a call came in from a Beverly Hills man who reported having found a flyer containing the blood libel in his front yard.

The event, which occurred on the date Jews all over the world were preparing to light the first candle in celebration of Hanukkah, set of warning bells, and the Beverly Hills police decided to deploy additional personnel.

According to the police, the fliers had been distributed in plastic bags that were weighted down with rice, so they wouldn't be blown away. They were found at several dozen homes.

Police said that a team of officers and city workers had canvassed the area and collected all the fliers found there, and said that they were trying to identify the parties responsible for the "disturbing event," which is being investigated as a hate crime.

The flyer is titled "Every single aspect of the COVID agenda is Jewish," and warns that anyone who took a stance against lockdown protests was a "Shabbos goy carrying out the will of the Jews."

A Jordanian professor of Islamic law said earlier this month that while the term "Zionists" must be used instead of "Jews" lest one be "canceled," there is no difference between the two. Furthermore, said Professor Ahmad Nofal of the University of Jordan, this need for circumscribed language is proof that the "Zionists" control the world.

"See how they rule the world? They even monitor what words you use. What kind of power is this? If you curse 1.7 [sic] Muslims, there's nothing to it. But if you dare to say one word (against the Jews), they cancel you," Nofal told Jordan's Yarmouk TV on April 2, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute.

Nofal's remarks were part of an anti-Semitic, anti-Western diatribe in which he called Freemasonry a "Zionist movement" and accused the United States of genocide.

"Global Freemasonry is a Zionist movement. I shouldn't say this, you say? So what is it, a nationalist movement? Is it a humanist movement? No, my dear. Zionism came up with the notion of Freemasonry," he said. "'Masonic lodges' and whatnot … the 'Grand Master' … these are all Zionist notions. Jewish notions … call them whatever you like. But it is forbidden to say "Jewish" nowadays … forbidden! Fine, whatever. We'll say 'Zionist.' It is the same thing," he added.

Nofal encouraged all his listeners to examine themselves for signs of Western corruption.

"We need to make sure that Western culture has not changed our notions and our tastes without us even noticing," he said. "It is like someone who undergoes a surgery under anesthesia. That's what the Zionists do. They harvest organs from our [Palestinian] patients. They chop off part of the liver … you know that when you cut part of the liver it grows. Sometimes they plant illnesses in you when you are under anesthesia," he added.

The United States, he continued, had "annihilated only 140 million Red Indians, and 40 million Africans. That's about 200 million. You killed them so that America could become America. And you are still killing them for being black."

In a new and surprising blood libel, Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah declared Tuesday night that "Israel kills the Jews itself to support its initiative."

Nasrallah made the false claim in a speech marking the anniversary of the death of former Hezbollah military commander Imad Mughniyeh.

Nasrallah went on to level the accusation that "they [Israel] killed many Jews in different countries because they refused to move to Israel."

In other remarks directed at IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, Nasrallah said, "You do what you want, and we'll do what we want. We aren't seeking a clash or a war, but if you declare war, we will fight it, and if you bomb a city, we'll bomb a city. If you bomb villages, we'll bomb in return."

Nasrallah went on to say that "If there is a war with Israel, the Israeli home front will find itself in a situation it hasn't had to deal with since 1948."

As for the Palestinians, Nasrallah said, "No one is talking about the 'deal of the century' that has disappeared, or is becoming irrelevant." He also mentioned the 42nd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, which supporters of the ayatollah regime marked last Thursday.

"The [Islamic] Republic has developed in all areas over the course of years, until it became a regional power," he said.

Military Intelligence officials in Israel believe that while Hezbollah does not want a full-scale war with Israel, it is not ruling out a few days of fighting. Nasrallah said, "No one can promise that a war or a few short days of battle won't devolve into a full-scale war."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jewish communities worldwide are fearing the "repeat of historic tropes and historic scapegoating of Jews in times of crisis," the Anti-Defamation League's Senior Vice President of International Affairs Dr. Sharon S. Nazarian said in a recent webinar hosted by the American Society of the University of Haifa

"As a vulnerable minority Jews feel sensitive to the rise of conspiracy theories – particularly in non-democratic governments which use scapegoating of minorities, and especially Jews, to deflect from their own failures," said Dr. Nazarian, who is also the founder of the Younes & Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies at University of California, Los Angeles and a member of University of Haifa's Board of Governors. "Governments that are not able to provide for their own citizens really use conspiracy theories as a mechanism for deflecting blame."

Dr. Nazarian heads ADL's work fighting anti-Semitism and racial hatred globally. In her consultations with Jewish communities around the world since the start of the pandemic, she said that "one of the very common themes we saw were the economic anxieties people were expecting to happen. Jewish communities know that not only the pandemic itself, but the economic impact of a major slowdown like huge unemployment, what that historically rises to. Usually, the front and center of the reaction is anti-Semitism.

"We will call out anti-Semitism at ADL as we always have, at any instance where we see it," Dr. Nazarian said, "but as a civil rights organization with a long history of battling for civil rights, we stand shoulder to shoulder with the civil rights leaders of this country and all the people out demonstrating who really believe this is a moment of reckoning, and that we have to look at police brutality, and that we have to look at the racism that exists in the institutions in this country. When that narrative crosses the line and is hijacked into anti-Semitic or anti-Israel narrative, then we will call it out no questions asked."

This comment reflects the somewhat tenuous support by the ADL and other Jewish organizations to the protests across the US and the larger ideological camp of Black Lives Matter amidst a wave of accusations against the movement and many of its supporters for numerous anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiments.

Regarding how social media has become a major amplifier of hate speech and anti-Semitism, Dr. Nazarian stated that large companies like Facebook must "come to terms with the fact that they have a role to play here and they have to be part of the solution."

Dr. Nazarian also commented on a study published in June by the University of Haifa and Institute for Counter Terrorism researchers which brought to light the growing hotbed of extreme anti-Semitism on TikTok, today's fastest-growing social network platform. In a scan of TikTok videos, the study found that the most prevalent form of far-right extremism pertained to anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial, comprising more than one-fifth of the posts that were analyzed.

A prominent Egyptian recently revived an old anti-Semitic blood libel, claiming Jews use blood to prepare matzot on Passover, the Middle East Media Research Institute has found.

Dr. Fouad M. AbdelWahed, an Egyptian professor of Hebrew at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, said in an interview on the Egyptian TV show "Blue Line" that some Jews eat matzot on Passover that contain human blood.

He said that he believes that some members of the Jewish community donate the blood for the purpose of preparing the matzah and that the practice, which he said is today limited to "extremist" ultra-Orthodox Jews, was once widespread among Jews. He further said that the consumption of this matzah has negative effects on one's health.

"Blue Line," which airs on Egypt's Channel 2 TV, often features anti-Semitic content.

When asked, the academic confessed that "by Allah, I don't know where they get the blood from."

The idea Jewish people use human blood for ritualistic reasons was first recorded in 1149 when the body of a child called William was found in a wood near Norwich, England.

Based on the testimony of Theobald of Cambridge, a Jewish convert to Christianity who claimed Jews use human blood taken from Christian children for ritualistic reasons, the idea entered the antisemitic lore and led to further accusations, and violence, against Jewish communities around the world.
