The NYPD is investigating a stabbing incident that occurred on Tuesday in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, as a suspected antisemitic attack. Police have released photos of the suspect and are conducting an extensive manhunt while significantly increasing security forces in the area.

The incident took place shortly after 4:00 p.m. (local time) near the corner of Kingston Avenue and Lincoln Place – just one block from Chabad's headquarters.

According to police, the stabbing began with a verbal argument that initially appeared random between two men. The suspect walked away from the scene, but the victim, a 35-year-old man, followed him, and the two became involved in another confrontation that turned violent. According to reports, the attacker began cursing Jews and even said, "It's okay if the Holocaust were to happen again."

At this point, according to law enforcement sources, the suspect pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the victim in the chest. Despite the injury, the victim continued to chase the suspect for some distance. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, treated and released, with his condition described as not life-threatening.

Police are examining reports that antisemitic statements were made by the suspect during the confrontation – a detail that strengthens the suspicion of a hate crime. The investigation is taking place against a backdrop of growing tension in the Jewish community, partly following the attack in Sydney, Australia, and a recent antisemitic assault on the New York subway.

We just had a huge tragedy in Bondi Beach, and everybody in this neighborhood, in particular, is connected. We are all one body, literally, figuratively, and it's horrible," Crown Heights resident and Chabad community member Karna Nebenzahl said.

Three people were killed inside a New York City restaurant as police search for the suspect in an area with a large concentration of Hassidic Jews, not far from the Chabad Lubavitch headquarters. Emergency services responded to the Crown Heights area in Brooklyn shortly before 3:30 a.m. after multiple reports of gunfire, police confirmed to The Sun.

Seven victims were discovered inside the Taste of the City Lounge on 903 Franklin Avenue with multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were urgently transported to local hospitals, police told The Sun. Their conditions remain unknown. Footage from the scene shows police lights flashing as ambulances rush down the street.

Witnesses reported on social media a police cordon has been established with "crime tape stretched for blocks." Local media reported the suspect remains at large. The New York Police Department confirmed "there are no arrests at this time, and the investigation is ongoing." The NYPD urged residents to avoid the area while investigations proceed. Officers have been reviewing CCTV footage from the area and interviewing witnesses to piece together the shooting.

Taste of the City Lounge operates as a popular American and Caribbean diner with a full bar, hookah, and DJs. The incident follows another shooting in Times Square about a week earlier which left three people injured. A teenage gunman opened fire in the popular tourist hotspot as footage showed panicked crowds fleeing while cops swarmed a vehicle. Police told The Sun that gunfire erupted at 1:20 a.m. after a "verbal dispute between two people escalated."

The New York Post reported Monday that the bus driver stopped his vehicle along the roadside while transporting students to Prospect International Elementary School in Brooklyn and launched into a speech about his religious beliefs to a group of students, some of whom were Jewish. The driver told the children that only Jesus could save them, not religion itself, according to a parent who spoke to the newspaper.

When one student asked whether Jesus was Jewish, the driver made antisemitic statements about Jewish responsibility for Jesus' death. "Yes, he was Jewish and actually Jews – his own people – killed him," the driver said, according to the parent's account.

Some students sent real-time text messages to their parents about the incident, and one Jewish student broke down crying during the driver's speech, the parent claimed. At one point, the driver asked the students to pray while distributing white hats bearing the message "I am with you always" with a black cross engraved between the words.

"What upset me was that the children were late to school," one parent said. "The driver definitely held the children hostage. The Jewish parents were certainly the most upset."

The driver has been suspended pending investigation of the incident, though school officials have not provided additional details about disciplinary measures or whether criminal charges might be filed.

A 20-year-old Pakistani national residing in Canada has been arrested for allegedly plotting a terrorist attack on a Jewish center in New York City, according to a press release from the US Department of Justice's Office of Public Affairs.

Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was apprehended on September 4 in Canada following a complaint filed in the Southern District of New York. He faces charges of attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization.

Attorney General Merrick Garland stated, "The defendant is alleged to have planned a terrorist attack in New York City around October 7 of this year with the stated goal of slaughtering, in the name of ISIS, as many Jewish people as possible." Garland expressed gratitude to Canadian law enforcement partners for their swift action in the case.

FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the severity of the alleged plot, saying, "The defendant was allegedly determined to kill Jewish people here in the United States, nearly one year after Hamas' horrific attack on Israel." Wray affirmed the FBI's commitment to investigating and holding accountable those who seek to commit violence in support of terrorist organizations.

According to the complaint, Khan had been communicating with undercover law enforcement officers since November 2023, expressing his support for ISIS and distributing propaganda materials. He allegedly planned to use automatic and semi-automatic weapons to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn.

Khan reportedly told the undercover officers that he intended to create "a real offline cell" of ISIS supporters for a "coordinated assault" using AR-style rifles. He emphasized the significance of October 7 and October 11, 2024 as potential dates for the attack because "Oct. 7 they will surely have some protests and Oct. 11 is Yom Kippur."

The suspect allegedly changed his target location from another US city to New York City in August, boasting that "New York is perfect to target Jews" due to its large Jewish population. Khan purportedly proclaimed, "We are going to NYC to slaughter them," and sent a photograph of the specific area inside the targeted location where he planned to carry out the attack.

Khan repeatedly urged the undercover officers to acquire weapons and equipment for the attack, including "Some good hunting [knives] so we can slit their throats." He allegedly stated, "If we succeed with our plan, this would be the largest attack on US soil since 9/11."

On September 4, Khan attempted to reach the US-Canada border using three separate cars before being stopped near Ormstown, Canada, approximately 12 miles from the border.

If convicted, Khan faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The FBI's New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles Field Offices are investigating the case, with the Department of Justice seeking Khan's extradition from Canada.

In a disturbing act of hatred, the residences of the Brooklyn Museum's director, Anne Pasternak, and several Jewish board members were vandalized with antisemitic graffiti and damage. The perpetrators threw red paint and scrawled chilling messages such as "blood on your hands" across the properties, leaving a trail of fear and intimidation.

Pasternak's cooperative apartment building in Brooklyn Heights bore the brunt of the attack, with a menacing sign labeling her a "White Supremacist Zionist." An inverted red triangle, a symbol previously used by groups opposed to Israel to identify military targets, was also spray-painted on her door.

Mayor Eric Adams swiftly condemned the acts, stating, "This is not peaceful protest or free speech. This is a crime, and it's overt, unacceptable antisemitism. These actions will never be tolerated in New York City for any reason." The mayor expressed his regret to Pasternak and the targeted board members, vowing, "I spoke to Anne this morning and committed that this hate will not stand in our city. The NYPD is investigating and will bring the perpetrators responsible here to justice."

On June 10, pro-Palestinian demonstrators lit smoke canisters and flares outside The Nova Music Festival Exhibition in Lower Manhattan, which paid tribute to the victims of the Oct. 7 massacre.

Mayor Eric Adams visited with victim's families there and condemned the messages from the protesters. "You do not call for peace and wave flags of Hamas. You do not call for peace and then come to a memorial site," Adams said.

Meanwhile, another antisemitic incident occurred on a NYC subway train car, where a keffiyeh-donning mob chanted in unison "Raise your hands if you're a Zionist. This is your chance to get out."

The suspects – 19, 20, and 21 years old – have also been indicted for obstruction of justice.

According to the charges, which were pressed against them on May 22, the three suspects stopped by a synagogue in Borough Park the day after Operation Guardian of the Walls, and began shouting antisemitic slurs, such as "Free Palestine" and "Kill all the Jews." They also spat on Jews who walked by and physically assaulted two ultra-Orthodox men, punching and attempting to strangle them.

The three suspects first appeared in court last week, after which they were released on bail. According to local media, they are facing up to four years in prison.

The district attorney condemned the attack and said that "every Brooklynite has the right to lead his life freely and follow his religion without fear. Assaults such as the ones described in the indictment are abominable."

A video posted on social media by Shomrim, a private Orthodox Jewish safety patrol, shows two suspects approach the Jewish man, brutally beat him and steal his tefillin, after which they immediately fled the scene.

Local police are investigating the incident as a hate crime. Shomrim is offering a $1,000 award for information leading to an arrest.

Chairman of the Executive of the World Zionist Organization Yaakov Hagoel condemned the viscous attack and called on the government to take action.

"Antisemitism aims to instill fear in Jews by trying to destroy them. The incident, in which a Jew was humiliated and beaten in the streets of Brooklyn, on his way to synagogue, clearly reflects the need to recalculate a new route.

"The US, our closest ally in the world, has in recent years seen a record spike in antisemitic assaults, both in their severity and frequency. I am once again calling on the US administration to recalculate its route, and put an end to the growing phenomenon. The incident is just another reminded for those who have might have forgotten that antisemitism is directed against the Jews."

Jeffrey Lax, a 47-year-old Jewish professor of business at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY, was appalled by a recent 83-34 vote by the Professional Staff Congress of the City University of New York on a June 10 resolution condemning "the continued subjugation of Palestinians to the state-supported displacement, occupation, and use of lethal force by Israel" and "racism in all its forms including antisemitism, and recognizes that criticisms of Israel, a diverse nation-state, are not inherently antisemitic."

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

The resolution, which made no mention of the Hamas terrorist group that rules the Gaza Strip, also referred to Israel as an apartheid state.

"Whoever wrote this was not very intelligent," Lax told JNS in a phone interview. "You can't have it both ways. If Israel is an apartheid state, how can it also be a diverse nation-state? It's clearly an antisemitic trope to call it an apartheid state. Do they not know that there are Arabs in the government? They serve on the Supreme Court and make up 20% of the population. It's absurd. Facts matter."

Lax, who is also an attorney, said he plans to quit the union because he does not want his money to go to Jew-hatred. He said union dues are about 1% of his salary. He said he had written to PSC President James Davis and made it clear that just because a resolution says it is not antisemitic does not make it so. Lax said the resolution also seeks to put an end to American financial support for Israel, a move tantamount to divestment from Israel, one of the stated goals of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement.

Lax said it was embarrassing to see educators who are so uneducated.

"It's downright antisemitic that the resolution completely failed to mention that Hamas rockets were fired down at Israeli civilians," Lax said. "This was a month ago, not years ago. Did they forget? This was a reaction to the fighting in Israel. That Palestinians died is a terrible tragedy, of course, but you can't ignore the actions of Hamas. It took place. It's a fact. You can't just choose to ignore it and expect that you are doing something honorable. It's nonsensical."

Subscribe to Israel Hayom's daily newsletter and never miss our top stories!

Noting the union has a history of antisemitism, Lax said the vote did not surprise him. He said he believes more than 55 other union members have also resigned as a result of the vote.

"I don't want my money to go to foster antisemitism," said Lax. "It's absurd."

He said the decision to insert the term antisemitism did not address the real conflict and was only used as a facade or childish attempt to make it appear as though the resolution was not in fact antisemitic.

Lax, an Orthodox Jew, said he had filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission after learning that Orthodox or Zionist professors had been singled out for exclusion from the Progressive Faculty Caucus at his college and was vindicated on all counts in a ruling about four or five months ago. In addition, under investigation, other members admitted that they purposely planned meetings on Friday night so Lax would not be able to attend.

"It was very stupid of them to admit it," said Lax. "I don't know why they admitted it, but they did."

He said he was disappointed the union had not taken any measures to rebuke his colleagues despite their ill-treatment of him. While Lax said his job was secure, he did not always feel like he was.

"I'm not afraid of being fired. I don't think that will happen," he said. "But I've been harassed. I was once surrounded by five union members. I was trying to leave, and a guy put his hand above my head. He said, 'No, we're just getting started.' So they've been very threatening to me."

'People are angry about this'

Lax said union members should be embarrassed the resolution made no mention of the 10 Israeli civilians killed in the fighting or Jewish Americans who were under attack on the streets of New York City.

Part of the problem, he noted, was fellow Jewish teachers.

"There are definitely Jewish professors who voted for this," he said. "I'm not surprised by it. You don't have to be not-Jewish to be antisemitic. There are plenty of secular Jews who hate religious Jews. There are plenty of non-Zionist Jews who hate Zionist Jews. No matter what stream you follow, that doesn't give you the right or a shield to discriminate against others. It's just wrong."

He said the delegates were wrong to not further discuss the vote with the union's 25,000 members.

"It's a matter of respect," he said. "They purport to represent the entire union, and this was a very controversial resolution, and I don't think they represent the union. People are angry about this, as well they should be. I'm angry about this because you don't make a decision like this without properly discussing it first."

Lax said he hoped that people could become more educated about the situation in general and the Middle East in particular. He also expressed alarm over growing antisemitism.

He said: "It's sad that people are saying these things in 2021. I only hope people do some research to see how foolish this resolution was. My hope is that other unions across the country do not follow suit."

Thousands of marchers assembled in Manhattan Sunday morning, taking to the streets and flooding the Brooklyn Bridge for hours as they crossed into the borough of Brooklyn amid chants of "No Hate, No Fear," the theme of the assembly in the works for days now.

An estimated 25,000 people converged on Manhattan's Foley Square and made their way to Brooklyn's Cadman Plaza, where they heard from community leaders and organizations that urged Jewish pride and unity in the face of escalating anti-Semitism.

Sunday's march (AP/Eduardo Munoz Alvarez)

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) each spoke Sunday in Manhattan on streets packed with people holding signs and spontaneously breaking into song. "While we're here today in the spirit of solidarity and love, government must do more than just offer thoughts and prayers – government must act," he said, adding that he would be proposing a new law for the state of New York that categorizes hate crimes as domestic terrorism.

"Today, we do not simply walk over a bridge, we begin building better bridges between all denominations of Jews, and between Jews and non-Jews," said Eric S. Goldstein, CEO of UJA-Federation of New York. "Building bridges means putting aside our differences, religious and political, and calling out anti-Semitism and all forms of hate wherever we see it. The purpose of today's march is to loudly and publicly proclaim that an attack on a visibly Orthodox Jew is an attack on every Jew, an attack on every New Yorker and an attack on every person of goodwill."

A woman accused of slapping three people in one of a series of apparently anti-Semitic attacks reported throughout New York during Hanukkah was charged Saturday with attempted assault as a hate crime, court records show.

Tiffany Harris, 30, was released without bail after her arraignment on the attempted assault charge and misdemeanor and lower-level charges, according to the records.

Her lawyer, Iris Ying, declined to comment, and the New York Post reported that Harris rebuffed questions as she left a Brooklyn court.

Police said Harris slapped three women, ages 22 to 31, in the face and head after encountering them on a corner in Brooklyn's Crown Heights area. The victims suffered minor pain, police said.

Around the city, police have gotten at least six reports this week – and eight since Dec. 13 – of attacks possibly propelled by anti-Jewish bias.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday that police presence would increase in Crown Heights and two other Brooklyn neighborhoods with large Jewish populations.
