Mexican officials say the shooting death of two Israelis at an upscale shopping mall in Mexico City is likely linked to drug cartels and money laundering.

Mexico's top police official won't say which cartel may have been involved in the brazen assault last week, which included a diversionary attack with an assault rifle against police outside the mall.

Local media reported the gunmen may have worked for the notorious Jalisco cartel, but officials refused to confirm that.

Public Safety Secretary Alfonso Durazo said Friday, "There are links to Mexican criminal organizations, mainly [for] money laundering."

A woman wearing a blond wig disguise shot the two Israelis men at a restaurant inside the mall.

Though the woman initially claimed the killings were a crime of passion, prosecutors say she later changed her story.

In June, an Israeli DJ was shot dead when gunmen, believed to be working for a local cartel, opened fire at a dance club in Mexican city of San Luis Potosí.

Unidentified gunmen shot dead Israeli electronic music DJ Ronen Dahan, also known as Perplex, during an attack at a dance club in the central Mexican city of San Luis Potosí, authorities said on Saturday.

The attorney general's office for the surrounding state of San Luis Potosí said in a statement that a group of armed men entered the club in the south of the city early on Saturday and opened fire, killing Dahan, 45, and wounding three other people.

One of the wounded later died of his injuries in a hospital.

The gunmen left the building and their whereabouts were unknown, the statement said. The motive was not clear.

The attorney general's office said Dahan was believed to be performing at the club and was identified by the documentation he had on him. He was an Israeli national, the statement added.

An official Facebook page for Dahan said he was born in France, grew up in Israel and was now based in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Facebook page said Dahan had released at least 10 electronic albums and had gone on several world tours.

The Foreign Ministry's assessment is that Dahan was not the target of the attack, which it believes was related to the ongoing cartel war in the country.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said it was "examining whether a well-known Israeli trance DJ was killed a few hours ago at a party in Mexico, according to Mexican media reports, and armed men apparently linked to the cartel wars broke into a party and opened fire, killing four and injuring six. The Foreign Ministry is now examining the reports."
