A combination of circumstances and causes paved the way to Tehran. One of the most important was the fall of Bashar Assad, and as a result, the dismantling of Syria's air defense system. Immediately after Assad fled – in brilliant thinking and stirring execution, the Israeli Air Force understood that if Syria would be clear of anti-aircraft missiles, Israel would kill two birds with one stone.

One – and this is clear – it would be possible to control Syrian skies, and from them interdict on its soil any terrorist organization, weapons shipment or military armament directed against Israel. Two, and here's the genius, the understanding that flight paths between Israeli Air Force bases in Israel to the reactor in Natanz, for example, would be dramatically shortened and become much safer. These days the base is closed to civilian entry, so only through phone conversations can one understand what is happening there. It turns out that even though the Iranians are trying to target Israeli Air Force bases, operational continuity has not been affected for a moment.

Here too, the end of the deed was in the beginning of the thought. The campaign plan was built on the assumption that perhaps missiles would fall on bases during confrontation with Iran. And the plan works. And so the aircraft take off without pause, turn north to the Israeli Golan, break east to Syria, continue to Iraq, and then to Iran. About three hours round trip. The hands don't believe the words they are writing, but the Israel-Iran route is "as busy as Highway 6," the pilots are already joking. One of them, with whom a conversation was scheduled for me, was forced to postpone it because "he had a trip." To Tehran.

The remains of a missile interceptor in central Israel on Thursday, June 19, 2025 (Usage under Israel's Intellectual Property Law Article 27(a))

The flight is only the tip of the process. It is made possible as a result of preparation work stretched beyond the limit, sometimes under fire, by thousands of ground personnel. The cockpit occupants make it clear at every opportunity that without the technicians, armaments specialists, maintenance crews, refuelers and other role holders – nothing would have happened.

Ground crews, for their part, know that the responsibility placed on them this time is greater than ever. So that God forbid no pilot encounters a mechanical problem in Iraqi or Iranian skies, the technical crew maintains the most stringent level of preparations, maintenance, inspections and treatments.

The aircraft too, F-35 ("Adir") F-15i ("Ra'am"), some of which are no longer young, are working overtime compared to routine. Gaza, Syria or Lebanon are located within air striking distance of Israel. Iran, and it also depends which region in it, is a completely different story. The wear rate is higher. In addition, aerial refueling is required, sometimes twice. This is a sensitive and complex procedure in enemy skies. Above all this, from the moment of crossing the border, the danger of a missile from the ground or air still exists along the entire route.

"These are long hours of absolute concentration and high adrenaline," says a senior Israeli Air Force official the day after his second sortie to Iran. He is not just a pilot, but fills a senior role in the "Air Force family," as they like to define it in the force. And like in a family, on his way to Iran or returning from it, he and his comrades identify each other on communications by voice alone – a surrealistic experience in Middle Eastern skies.

Another experience, significant and much more motivating, is the justification. While they were in the air on their way to Iran, one of the squadron commanders at his base saw the Iranian missiles on their way to the country.

"They saw the missiles launching, pillars of fire on the way to Israel. There is nothing clearer that shows our need to defend the home front, to take risks and defend Israel, than this sight. I too on the way there think about my wife and children, whom I left in central Israel, in the shelter. And I know that when I attack a missile base in western Iran – I am protecting her, them, and of course all the families of the people in Israel. The bond is visceral."

Almost all his years in the force he dealt with preparations for striking Iran. In the past as a regular pilot, and in recent months he filled a central role in planning the programs. They were and remain very complex, dangerous and sensitive, and at the same time meticulous and precise. The plans began to be written from when it was clear that action in Iran was not a question of "if," but of "when." Of course there were also abundant training sessions and exercises.

IAF aircraft before their Iran mission, June 2025 (IDF Spokesperson's Unit)

All these preparations drained into the fateful hours between Thursday night and Friday morning. The aircraft were fueled and armed just beyond the edge of capability. And what happened at his base occurred at others too. Now it can also be revealed that the entire Israeli Air Force was in the skies on that historic night. "Personally I went to watch the takeoffs from the control tower, and also from the command and control center. All the preparations and exercises and training are now being implemented. Everyone reports mission readiness. You hear them on communications, and then it all rises into the air. The excitement is enormous," the senior official says.

Several hours passed, and the first wave returned. "A feeling of euphoria. We already knew in the first hours that we had eliminated the top of the Iranian military, that the operation succeeded, but that now the enemy is also exposed and will begin to act. We prepared for this. The goal now is to continue carrying out all the missions, and we are meeting it. And with each passing day achievements accumulate," he says.

Khamenei against the backdrop of Tehran following Israel's strikes (AFP/ATTA KENARE; KHAMENEI.IR / AFP) AFP/ATTA KENARE; KHAMENEI.IR / AFP;

Naturally, many parts of his story are forbidden for publication right now. Their time to be written will still come. But what can and is important to tell about is the spirit. It is the driving force of the tens of thousands of soldiers standing behind this fantastic operation.

"Everything is connected to October 7, and if looking further back, then also to the past of the Jewish people and the Holocaust. The most important lesson is initiative. Not to wait for threats to develop and become established, but to bring them to a state where they are incapable. This is the realization of 'If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.' This is a war to remove threats, a war of no choice, and you feel it in everything you do."

From everything he went through in the past week, there is one special moment that he preserved in his heart, and it is connected to the hard failure of the Israeli Air Force on the day of the massacre. After the first aircraft returned from Iran, one of the reserve officers serving at the base approached him.

"He hugged me and said 'Commander, you restored to us the lost honor of October 7.' For me it was as if someone pulled out a knife that was stuck in my stomach and heart. I really hope that this operation will begin to heal the wound and restore the trust that was cracked on that black day. And we also believe and hope that what was done in Iran will help in advancing the release of the hostages." Amen.

"CNN's beloved conservative"

Although he has never visited the country, for many years Scott Jennings (47) has been defending Israel in American media. In his youth he filled a senior position in the Bush administration. In recent years he has been the "beloved conservative" at CNN.

Scott Jennings on CNN (Screenshot: CNN)

In panels composed only of Trump-hating Democrats, Jennings is the one who "presents what half of Americans think, or even a bit more," as he phrases it. Anyone who loves American politics will be delighted to watch him. "It's better to light a candle than to leave the room dark," he summarizes his motivation, and also gives credit to CNN for giving him the platform. This isn't taken for granted in these years in America.

And here, after years in which he speaks about us from afar, fate willed it and Jennings found himself here on one of the most fateful days in Israeli history. As is customary with influencers like him, in the week before the war he toured the battle sites of the war, in Nir Oz, at the Nova festival massacre site and on the Lebanese border. All this was just the preview.

An Israeli Arrow system being tested in Alaska (Defense Ministry)

"We went down to Tiberias, and then the war began. This is the first time I'm experiencing something like this. You are accustomed, but I saw many missiles and aircraft, heard the booms and photographed a lot. It was powerful. I never experienced anything like this, and it's something I'll carry with me forever."

He didn't keep the experiences to himself, but shared them with his millions of followers on social networks. He updated about alerts, told about running to protected spaces. In particular he was impressed "by the strength among the Israeli population to defeat Iran and radical terror at the end of the war, once and for all. For Israel this is existential. It cannot live with these madmen around it."

On Saturday he was supposed to fly home, but this was not possible, of course. Only on Monday did he manage to escape. A moment before he crossed the border to Jordan through the Allenby Bridge, I managed to catch him for a conversation about his experiences from the war and about his unique role in American media.

"I don't regret that I came," he said at the opening of our conversation, even though the war stuck him here for three days.

Q: What will you take with you to America? What will you tell your readers and viewers?

"My position has always been to defend Israel in the media, because I know how to distinguish between the good guys and the bad guys. But I wanted to experience this and to be able to say to many people in America that I was here and saw it, and that many of the opinions they have about what's happening here are not correct, because they simply lied to them."

Q: If Donald Trump calls you, would you recommend that he get involved in the war or not?

"My private opinion is that the battle for the future of the West is taking place here and now. There are more isolationist people who think this has no bearing on us, but that's not true. This is connected to America and to the entire world.

"Regarding US involvement in the war, I think Trump's functioning until now has been genius. The question is what's the fastest way to do this in a way that reduces harm to American lives. Is the way to neutralize the threat when the US bombs or when Israel does it, or perhaps through negotiation? Only the president has all the information, and I trust his judgment.

A boy and a baby girl being rescued in Peach Tikva on June 19, 2025 (Usage under Israel's Intellectual Property Law Article 27(a))

"And another important thing to say – Trump is the only one who speaks about the Middle East in positive and optimistic language. He already deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for the Abraham Accords, and all the more so he would be worthy of it if he removes the Iranian nuclear threat from above all civilization."

In a recent segment, CNN political commentators Anderson Cooper and John King sparked controversy while discussing potential vice presidential candidates for Kamala Harris. During the conversation, King remarked on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as a possible choice, stating, "He's Jewish. There could be some risks with putting him on the ticket."

This comment has raised eyebrows and ignited debate about religious bias in American politics. The suggestion that a candidate's Jewish faith could be seen as a liability, particularly in progressive circles, has led to criticism from various quarters.

According to the Jewish Chronicle, Shapiro, born in 1973 in Kansas City, Missouri, is an observant Conservative Jew whose faith deeply influences his personal and public life. Raised in a Jewish household that emphasized faith and service, Shapiro keeps kosher and celebrates Shabbat with his family, though he's not believed to be Shomer Shabbat. His Jewish education at Akiba Hebrew Academy (now Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy) and early involvement in the movement to free Soviet Jewry shaped his cultural identity. Shapiro's commitment to his faith extends to his adult life, where he and his wife Lori are active in their synagogue and send their children to Jewish day schools.

Shapiro, a strong supporter of Israel, has advocated for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, believing both sides have missed opportunities for peace in recent decades, according to Forward. While backing Israel, he was not hesitant to voice criticism, having called Prime Minister Netanyahu "a failed leader" for embracing right-wing policies and pushing controversial judicial reforms before October 2023. Regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, Shapiro opposed premature ceasefire calls while Hamas remains in power. He also supported anti-BDS legislation, signaling his commitment to Israel's interests in US policy. Shapiro has made numerous personal visits to the country.

Bibimbap, a traditional Korean rice bowl dish, experienced a surge in global search queries in 2023, reflecting the growing popularity of Korean cuisine driven by the Korean Wave of films, dramas, music, and fashion.

The dish is made of cooked rice, sautéed vegetables, and slices of meat or other proteins arranged radially for visual contrast, typically served with a fried egg and spicy bibimbap sauce.

It was listed among the 50 most delicious dishes in the world by CNN Travel.

Above all, bibimbap is highly adaptable and can work with leftover ingredients, reducing food waste, and offering a customizable culinary experience with diverse vegetable choices, protein choices, and Korean sauces.

Bibimbap's origins can be traced back to the 15th century in Jeonju, known as the City of Gastronomy, with four disputed theories about its creation.

Tips for making bibimbap at home include incorporating multiple plant-based ingredients and Korean flavors, and using a dolsot (stone bowl) to enhance the flavor and texture of the dish.

In a stark departure from typical media narratives, CNN anchor Jake Tapper has publicly challenged Democratic Senator Chris Coons attempts to downplay concerns about President Joe Biden's recent debate performance and overall fitness for office.

During a recent broadcast, Tapper addressed the growing unease surrounding Biden's public appearances, particularly focusing on the president's showing at the Trump-Biden debate. The veteran journalist pushed back against the Democratic Party's efforts to frame Biden's performance as an isolated incident.

"Democratic officials tried to spin this in many ways, they said: 'Biden had a cold' and 'it was just one off night." Tapper took a more critical stance, stating, "With all due respect, it is not honest to say that this is just one night. There have been moments like this that people have seen in front of the cameras and other moments without cameras."

The CNN host, known for his direct questioning style, said, "There is a pattern of Democratic officials seemingly trying to convince you to not believe what you saw and what you heard." Tapper raised the core question of whether the debate performance was indicative of a larger issue. Coons maintained that Biden "wouldn't be running if he weren't confident he's up for the job" and that he "doesn't trouble me at all."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel would enter "uncharted territory" if the Supreme Court struck down a recently passed "reasonableness" amendment, that's part of a contentious judicial reform, during an interview with CNN on Thursday evening.

In a heated interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, the prime minister did not respond to a question on whether he would comply with the possible overturning of the law, which set out to limit judicial review of government and ministerial decisions on the basis of "reasonableness."

"What you're talking about is a situation, or a potential situation, in which, in American terms, the US Supreme Court would take a constitutional amendment and declare it unconstitutional. That's the kind of spiral you're talking about, and I hope it doesn't come to that," Netanyahu said.

He insisted that the Court had become too powerful and that the reshuffle would balance those powers with those of the government and the legislature.

"We had to put Israeli democracy back on an equal footing with other democracies. The essence of democracy is the balance between the will of the majority and the rights of the minority. This balance has been violated over the last 20 years, because we have the most activist court on the planet," Netanyahu said.

He also referred to the "internal debate going on right now in the United States about the powers of the Supreme Court, about whether it's abusing its powers, whether they should be curtailed."

"Does that make American democracy no longer a democracy? Does that make this debate unworthy? Does it make this issue a symbol of the fact that you personally are moving toward a dictatorship?" he said. "I don't want to minimize the situation or people's concerns, because many of them have been caught up in this spiral of fear. Israel will remain a democracy."

Asked whether he expected any consequences from Washington following the bill's passage, Netanyahu stressed that relations between the White House and his government remained strong and that President Joe Biden invited him for a meeting this autumn.

He also affirmed that he had no intention of removing Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara from office, despite growing calls from the right-wing bloc to do so. Netanyahu indicated that he planned to use the new reasonableness law to reappoint the leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, Aryeh Deri, who has a conviction due to tax offenses, as minister.

US lawyer and professor Alan Dershowitz told i24NEWS on Tuesday that he was taking on the Dee family case and vowed to make CNN News pay, as Rabbi Leo Dee pursues a legal case against the news agency and its host Christiane Amanpour for her phrasing about the terror attack that took the lives of his wife and two daughters.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

"This is part of a pattern that CNN and Amanpour have engaged in over a decade or more," Dershowitz said, noting that he was taking on the case pro bono. "Amanpour constantly creates a moral equivalence between terrorists, who murder people in cold blood, and innocent victims. This was not a slip of the tongue, not an honest mistake."

The lawyer referred to findings by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America NGO, which he said "documented a long pattern by CNN and Amanpour of constantly citing against Israel and trying to create a moral equivalence between innocent victims of terrorism."

"They are not mistakes, they are part of a deliberate pattern. There's no moral equivalence between people who shoot families in cold blood and people who suffer as a result of terrorism. So let's wait to see what Amanpour says, not in a scripted apology, but under my cross-examination," he said. "All that has to be proved is that the family suffered emotional distress and harm, and we will be able to prove that.

"The harm that was suffered from this horrible statement by Amanpour… will become the subject of a significant lawsuit against CNN. "Amanpour hasn't apologized for years of misleading the world about the Israel-Palestine conflict and about terrorism. They have suffered enormous harm, and you can't take that back. An apology doesn't undo defamation."

The i24NEWS interview with Dershowitz came a day after Leo Dee spoke with the channel about his efforts to obtain an apology from Amanpour, who referred to the April murders by a Palestinian terrorist of the rabbi's wife and daughters – Lucy, Maya, and Rina – as a "shootout."

Hours after Monday's interview with Dee, Amanpour made a short on-air statement saying she "misspoke" and that she wrote to the rabbi "to apologize and make sure that he knows that we apologize for any further pain that may have caused him."

But Dee responded by saying that the apology was "not worth the paper it's printed on" and demanded not just a public apology, but most importantly "that they [CNN] change their attitude toward Israel."

"They continue to tell anti-truths about Israel," he continued, adding that he was consulting with legal experts about pursuing a case against the news agency.

CNN chief international anchor, Christiane Amanpour, apologized Monday for saying that Lucy Dee and her two daughters, Rina and Maia, were killed in a "shootout" with terrorists.

"And just a note," the anchor said 22 minutes and 50 seconds into her May 22 show "Amanpour." "On April 10th, I referred to the murders of a British-Israeli family, Lucy Dee and Maia and Rina Dee, the wife and daughters of Rabbi Leo Dee. During that live interview, I misspoke and said that they were killed in a 'shootout' instead of a 'shooting.' I have written to Rabbi Dee to apologize and make sure that he knows that we apologize for any further pain that may have caused him."

The statement offered no apology to viewers, and it did not explain why it took 12 days to correct.

Honest Reporting called the correction a "success," noting that it publicly called for Amanpour to issue the correction on May 11. "Upon seeing our exposé, Lucy's widower, Rabbi Leo Dee, issued a statement exclusively to Honest Reporting, echoing our call for an immediate apology. That tweet has racked up a further 137,000 views, indicating significant public outrage at Amanpour and CNN," the group stated.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach told JNS that Amanpour was "forced to capitulate and retract" her and CNN's "nauseating lie" less than 24 hours after Dee announced – during the memorial lecture for Boteach's father Yoav – that he planned to sue CNN for $1.3 billion "for defaming and desecrating the memory of his martyred wife and two daughters."

"The lesson here is that the Jewish community must never again allow the defamation of its good name and character," Boteach said. "Let all our enemies know that this is just the first of many actions we will be taking to ensure that the Jewish people and the State of Israel will never again (be) defamed. Antisemites beware."

The apology came just hours after Dee said he might sue CNN over its coverage of the terrorist attack. Speaking with the international outlet i24NEWS he said, "They said they [wife and daughters] were killed, and not brutally murdered by an evil Palestinian terrorist funded by Iran, and it's the typical 'CNNism' where they are trying to do a comparison between the victim and the terrorist...Christiane wrote me a very brief email apologizing for any misunderstanding caused by her calling it a 'shootout'... When you make a statement on prime time TV and then apologize in an email to a single person, it has a fraction of the impact."

"So we are determined absolutely determined to bring inflation back down to its target," Yaron said, referring to the government' 1-3% annual target. "And if that means continuing raising rates, and that is our primary tool, that's what we will do."

Israel's inflation rate reached a 2008 high of 5.4% in January. February data are slated for release later on Wednesday and economists polled by Reuters estimate a 5.0% rate.

In a bid to contain inflation, the Bank of Israel has raised its benchmark interest rate (ILINR=ECI) to 4.25% from 0.1% over the past year.

Yaron also criticized the government's proposals to overhaul the judiciary, saying the plan as of now could weaken the courts' independence.

"The process itself is hasty and does not have a wide agreement in the public," he said.

Ukrainian authorities said Sunday that Russia's military bombed an art school sheltering some 400 people in the port city of Mariupol, where heavy street fighting is underway weeks into a devastating Russian siege.

The fall of Mariupol would allow Russian forces across southern and eastern Ukraine to link up. But Western military analysts say that even if the surrounded city is taken, the troops battling for control there a block at a time may be too depleted to help secure Russian breakthroughs on other fronts.

Three weeks into the invasion, Western governments and analysts see the conflict shifting to a war of attrition, with bogged down Russian forces launching long-range missiles at cities and military bases as Ukrainian forces carry out hit-and-run attacks and seek to sever their supply lines.

The strike on the art school was the second time in less than a week that local officials reported an attack on a public building where Mariupol residents had taken shelter. A bomb hit a theater where more than 1,000 people were believed to be sheltering on Wednesday.

There was no immediate word on casualties from the reported strike on the school, which The Associated Press could not independently verify. Ukrainian officials have not given an update on the search of the theater since Friday when they said at least 130 people had been rescued and another 1,300 were trapped by rubble.

City officials and aid groups have described dire conditions in Mariupol, where food, water, and electricity have run low and the fighting has prevented humanitarian convoys from reaching the city. The Russian siege also severed communication lines in Mariupol, making it difficult to verify reports from the city.

The strategic port on the Azov Sea has been under bombardment for over three weeks and has seen some of the worst horrors of the war in Ukraine. At least 2,300 people have died, some of whom had to be buried in mass graves, city officials have said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russian forces are blockading Ukraine's largest cities to create a "humanitarian catastrophe" with the aim of persuading Ukrainians to cooperate with them. He says Russians are preventing supplies from reaching surrounded cities in the center and southeast of the country.

"This is a totally deliberate tactic," Zelenskyy said in his nighttime video address to the nation, filmed outside in Kyiv, with the presidential office in the lamplight behind him. He said more than 9,000 people were able to leave besieged Mariupol in the past day, and in all more than 180,000 people have been able to flee to safety through humanitarian corridors.

"I'm ready for negotiations with him. I was ready for the last two years. And I think that without negotiations we cannot end this war," he told CNN's, Fareed Zakaria.
"I think that we have to use any format, any chance in order to have a possibility of negotiating, the possibility of talking to Putin. But if these attempts fail, that would mean that this is a third World War," he stressed.

The potential unseating of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – Israel's longest-serving prime minister – has created renewed interest abroad in Israel's political system and in Yamina leader Naftali Bennett, who is poised to lead the new government if it gets enough votes.

With the potential formation of a new government by the anti-Netanyahu bloc days aways, CNN ran a headline that expressed somewhat of a cautious approach in light of Netanyahu's successful efforts to thwart previous attempts to topple him: "Netanyahu's grip on power weakens."

It later discussed the political ramifications of the consequential deal between the opposition parties. "It's a seismic event in Israeli politics, and if the coalition is sworn in, it would bring an end to Netanyahu's 12 [consecutive] years as prime minister," the article said.

Conservative news outlet Fox News said in the headline that "Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu fires back at coalition effort to oust him: 'Fraud of the century,'" referring to the Likud chairman's attack on the right-wing party Yamina's decision to partner with the left in the so-called "change coalition."

Meanwhile, the BBC provided background to allow readers to understand how things had unfolded prior to the drama on Sunday. "

Russian outlet RT was also fascinated with the latest developments and even explained the complex nature of the rotating premiership that Lapid and Bennett have agreed to in principle. Al Jazeera, the Arab-language news outlet based in Qatar, focused on the split within the Right that made the "change coalition" a viable reality. "Far-right leader Bennett joins the anti-Netanyahu coalition."

France24, the international Paris-based news outlet in English, said that Bennett was the "kingmaker," for choosing to oust Netanyahu even though both are ideological right-wing allies.

Bennett's decision to join forces with the Left in order to topple Netanyahu comes amid an ongoing backlash among his voter base, with many saying he has no mandate to do so and was effectively handing over votes to the Left because of petty politics with Netanyahu.

Netanyahu on Sunday said that MKs in Bennett's Yamina party and others in various right-wing parties in the anti-Netanyahu bloc are likely going to torpedo the formation of the government they could not back a government that relies on radical left-wing lawmakers.
