Bahrain will allow journalists from six different Israeli media outlets to enter the country next week in order to cover a US-sponsored economic workshop in Manama, Channel 13 News reported on Wednesday.

US special envoy to the Middle East, Jason Greenblatt, confirmed the report and tweeted: "There are those working to improve the lives of Israelis, Palestinians & others in the region, and to see if peace can be achieved. Bahrain is one such country. The USA very much appreciates Bahrain's efforts."

Bahrain reportedly approved the entry of the Israelis at the request of US President Donald Trump's senior adviser Jared Kushner.

It was an unprecedented move by Bahrain, a country that does not have diplomatic ties with Israel, which for the first time will allow Israeli journalists to report from its soil.

As previously reported, neither Israeli nor Palestinian political leaders will be attending the June 25-26 event.

Greenblatt this week emphasized the nature of the "workshop" as apolitical, saying that since the Palestinian Authority had chosen to boycott the event, Israeli government officials would not be invited either, nor would other world leaders or foreign ministers.

In addition to Israel and the Palestinians, other major world powers, such as Russia and China, will not attend. The European Union will only send a "technical level official" to Bahrain, said European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini, who met with Kushner last week in advance of the conference.

Nevertheless, several Arab countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, have said that they will attend.

The two-day workshop will include keynote speeches, while delegations will hear plans to improve the economic situation and quality of life for Palestinians in Judea and Samaria and Gaza.

Additionally, work teams will sit down together for discussions, including the Israeli team with its Arab counterparts.

The Israeli delegation will include Maj. Gen. (ret.) Yoav Mordechai, who has developed influential ties in the Arab world over the years.

Mordechai, who is fluent in Arabic, stepped down last year as head of the IDF's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories unit and now heads Novard, an international consultancy firm.

Israel Radio said a hospital director and several social activists were also expected to participate.

The Palestinian Authority is officially boycotting the U.S.-initiated "Peace and Prosperity" summit, scheduled to take place in Bahrain in June, senior PA negotiator Saeb Erekat announced on Thursday.

The PA issued a strongly-worded statement declaring that "the Palestinian issue and national rights are not up for sale, and economic initiatives and imaginary promises to the world will not cover the evil face of the 'deal of the century,' which is intended to eradicate the Palestinian issue."

Hamas has also rejected the Bahrain event.

The Palestinians' refusal to take part in the conference came as no surprise. On Wednesday, United States Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt told the U.N. Security Council that the PA was making a mistake by opting to stay away.

"It would be a mistake for the Palestinians not to join us. They have nothing to lose and much to gain," Greenblatt said, adding that taking part in the conference would be the first step toward a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that would "transform the lives of the Palestinians."

U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy pointed out the "irony" of the United National Relief and Works Association (UNRWA) scheduling a "pledging conference for a broken system" to take place during the Bahrain summit. Greenblatt accused the Palestinian refugee organization of squandering the significant funds donated by many countries, predominantly the U.S.

"Since the establishment of UNRWA, the United States has contributed about $6 billion, but there has been no progress in the quality of life of the Palestinians. UNRWA has abandoned the Palestinians, and they deserve much more," Greenblatt said.
