Following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's "Sparta speech" on Monday, the screens on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange started the trading session on Tuesday with a sharp selloff, with investors fearing Israel would move away from international trade in order to prepare for international isolation.

Major indices saw steep declines after the opening bell, falling by nearly 3%. This represents a very steep drop for the major stocks, for which every fraction of a percent entails the liquidation of significant capital. The TA-90 index, the most popular index on the exchange in recent years, is shedding almost 3% and is thereby completing a decline of over 5% since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's warning on Monday that Israel should brace for international isolation and make sure it won't have to rely on the world for trade, to the point of adopting some autarkic economic postures. Netanyahu's speech was full of pessimism, with warnings that 'Israel is facing diplomatic isolation, we will have to deal with a closed economy," referring to the ongoing attitude by some countries to limit trade with Israel over the war in Gaza. But several hours later, after the surprise among the public in the media, he stressed that he was very optimistic about the prospects of Israel's economy, saying "Israel is the best place to invest" and that he was opposed to Israeli severing its trade ties with the world. "Israel's stock market is the strongest in the world; the shekel has become stronger and the deficit has shrunk despite the war...investing in Israel is the smart thing to do." He said that he meant to sound the alarm to the efforts by Iran and other countries to place an economic siege on Israel, "but we broke free."

In the trading rooms of the large banks, it is said that mutual funds, reflecting the activity of the general public, are particularly active on Tuesday. Sources in the trading rooms indicate that a substantial number of sell orders built up overnight in the mutual funds, and investment managers are liquidating assets to prepare for continued offerings until the afternoon, which is when the window closes for submitting additional sell or buy orders for the day.

The Israeli stock market has outperformed the rest of the world despite the Oct. 7 war (Reuters/Nir Elias)

At the same time, it is important to note that at this point, there were almost no visible activity from the institutional investors, which typically acquire assets when the public sells them off. In theory, should the declines deepen, an investment opportunity would arise for investment managers, known as "strong hands," but this remains theoretical, as a common adage in the capital market suggests that "one should not attempt to catch a falling knife." The Israeli stock market, despite the almost two-year war since Oct. 7, 2023, has largely outperformed the rest of the world since then.

Insurance stocks were leading the declines at the opening, having already been trading with volatility of late, with Harel's stock dropping by almost 1.5% and Clal Insurance decreasing by more than 1%. The stock of Azrieli, one of Israel's largest shopping mall operators, has also slipped by approximately 1% amid fears of a negative impact on Israelis' purchasing power.

Teva is down 2.4%, extending the stock's recent falls, which are driven by concerns that insurance companies worldwide will, for diplomatic and political considerations, favor recommending prescriptions from rival firms. Conversely, shares of Elbit Systems are up by nearly 1%, based on the belief that for the weapons maker, such days are actually beneficial for business.

In the bond market, price decreases were also noted, aligning with the working hypothesis that mutual funds are accumulating cash Tuesday out of concern for significant redemptions by the end of the day.

A Jewish-owned real estate office in London's Stamford Hill neighborhood endured a brutal vandalism attack overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, with community leaders condemning it as a clear act of antisemitism.

In the morning, the office revealed a grim scene – windows smashed, computers and furniture wrecked, and red paint poured across the entire space. The pavement outside was defaced with the spray-painted words "Drop Elbit," seemingly referencing the Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems, a defense industry leader.

Rabbi Hershel Gluck, president of the Shomrim organization and a local resident, stated, "This must be treated as an undeniably antisemitic incident. The owners are Jewish, but they have no connection to Israel."

Local footage shared on social media likened the attack to the Holocaust-era attacks on Jews under Nazi rule. "Kristallnacht. Welcome to the Jewish neighborhood of Stamford Hill, where Jews are not allowed to own businesses because Israel is at war with Gaza," one user wrote.

American F-15 fighter jets, outfitted with a cutting-edge radar system, thwarted about 75 Iranian Shahed drones during the April 13 Iranian assault on Israel, according to retired General Rob Novotny, who oversees fighter jet business development at Boeing.

Novotny shared this information on Tuesday during a press briefing at the Farnborough Airshow in England. The radar system manufactured by Raytheon is also a key component of the new F-15EX model that Israel intends to acquire, subject to Congressional approval. The initial order encompasses 25 aircraft, with options for an additional 50, bringing the potential total to 75 jets.

"No further sales pitch is necessary," Novotny stated. "This radar has proven its exceptional worth in combat." Boeing's chief F-15 test pilot, Matt "Phat" Giese, also participated in the briefing. He revealed that an F-15 carrying 12 training missiles is part of the airshow's aerobatic display, alongside an unarmed "clean" aircraft.

"Right after takeoff, I execute a highly intricate maneuver with the aircraft called a swirl loop, which has never been performed before with an armed jet. The aircraft doesn't sacrifice an ounce of capability despite the attached missiles," Giese remarked enthusiastically.

Elbit Systems, exhibiting through its British subsidiary, follows the pattern of other Israeli companies by primarily showcasing models within its stand rather than displaying full systems on the ground.

The booth features two of the world's most advanced helmets, drawing considerable attention from attendees. The first, designed for helicopter pilots and bearing a resemblance to Darth Vader's iconic headgear, is called X-Sight. This modular helmet incorporates a mission computer running an artificial intelligence algorithm, delivering a crisp, clear, and precise image. It enables low-altitude flying and identifies hard-to-spot ground obstacles and threats in all weather conditions.

Sagi Peleg, VP of Business Development & Strategy in the Aerospace Division, explained that this system fuses data from various sensors to present pilots with a comprehensive, integrated view. "We're implementing a completely novel strategy, offering pilots an augmented reality system that provides a combined picture constructed from various sensors and synthetic processors."

Elbit Systems' "Darth Vader" helmet. Photo credit: Elbit Systems Elbit Systems

This advancement means pilots can see power lines in the field along with their height, clearly marked with numbers. "The days of separate displays for radar, weapons systems, and other components are behind us. Now, all the information is consolidated and processed into a single, comprehensive picture."

The helmet is part of Elbit's new comprehensive strategic suite, available to both helicopter and fighter jet pilots – a holistic solution displayed on a single screen.

The second helmet, dubbed "Zero G," represents a significant upgrade to the advanced helmet used by F-35 pilots worldwide and in other cutting-edge aircraft: it's remarkably lightweight. "The original helmet, packed with technologies, was quite heavy," Peleg explained. "Pilots reported neck pain due to the weight. We've drastically reduced it, greatly alleviating the physical strain on pilots," he concluded.
