A suspected shooting attack by a Palestinian gunman in Jerusalem on Tuesday left two Israeli men wounded, police said.

It was the latest in a year-long cycle of violence that shows no sign of abating after weeks of heightened tensions around Jerusalem during the overlap of the Jewish holiday of Passover and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Israeli police were searching for the suspected attacker who fled the scene in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. The two wounded, who were shot while inside a vehicle after returning from their morning prayer, were treated for moderate gunshot wounds. They continued driving until they saw a police car, upon which the first responders helped them get medical attention.

Tensions in Israel and the West Bank soared weeks after rioters used violence against police on Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site, the compound home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The mosque sits on a contested hilltop known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, revered as the third-holiest site in Islam and the holiest site in Judaism.

Earlier this month, the Israeli military struck sites linked to the Palestinian group Hamas in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip after terrorists in the two territories fired salvos of rockets at Israel.

Palestinian attacks have killed at least 20 people, including one soldier, since the start of the year.

"I appeal to you, citizens of Israel, with a simple prayer: Let us leave these sacred days, which begin tonight and end on Independence Day, above all dispute; let us all come together, as always, in partnership, in grief, in remembrance."

The president's office has been engaged in talks between Israeli opposition members to broker a compromise with the governing coalition over planned judicial changes which would see Israel's highest court subject to various restrictions on its ability to conduct judicial review of laws and intervene in the decisions of the other branches of government.

While proponents of the plan say it would restore balance between Israeli authorities, critics say it removes checks and balances on government actions.
