A chartered aircraft carrying approximately 100 Iranian citizens left Louisiana Monday evening, bound for Tehran with a Qatar layover, marking unprecedented deportation cooperation between Washington and Tehran. Sources from both governments confirmed the operation to The New York Times.

Tuesday's expected arrival follows months of bilateral negotiations, with coordination from the Iranian Foreign Ministry ensuring the reception of deportees while American officials finalized removal plans, according to The New York Times. Anonymous sources cited authorization limits for discussing specifics.

Expanding deportation efforts now target nations with severe human rights violations as the Trump administration removes migrants regardless of destination conditions, The New York Times reported. Christian converts among the earlier 2025 deportees to Costa Rica and Panama face religious persecution risks, prompting advocacy groups' legal challenges.

American protection historically extended to Iranians escaping systematic persecution of dissidents, minorities, women's advocates, journalists, and LGBTQ citizens. Recent border arrivals claiming political or religious persecution increased significantly, though deportee identities and immigration details remained unclear, The New York Times noted.

Married couples joined single men and women on the flight, some choosing departure after lengthy detention while others faced forced removal following asylum denials or pending hearings, Iranian officials told The New York Times. Foreign ministry assurances promised safety despite deportees' fears amid Iran's economic collapse, featuring currency devaluation, inflation, unemployment, and infrastructure failures.

United Nations Security Council sanctions were reimposed on Saturday, compounding existing crises, as this rare diplomatic coordination demonstrates a shift in immigration enforcement priorities. Previous annual deportations peaked at 24 individuals in 2024 via commercial flights, The New York Times reported, contrasting sharply with Monday's mass charter operation.

A 16-year-old Ukrainian girl who fled the war in her country was murdered by an illegal resident from Iraq who pushed her onto train tracks, according to the German prosecutor's announcement. The suspect (31), who should have been deported in 2022, was arrested over the weekend after his DNA traces were found on the girl's body.

The murder occurred on August 11 at Friedland station in Lower Saxony state. Liana K. (full names of victims and suspects are confidential by law) arrived in Germany with her family from the city of Mariupol in Ukraine following the Russian invasion. According to the investigation findings, an illegal migrant with Iraqi citizenship suddenly pushed the girl onto the train tracks. At that time, she was speaking with her grandfather on the phone, and he heard her screams before she was struck.

The police were called to the scene due to a complaint about a "rampaging man" at the station. They found the suspect in a state of intoxication, which led them to the girl's body. Area residents described him to Bild as "a terrible person, completely insane."

Liana K. (full names of victims and suspects are confidential by law) arrived in Germany with her family from the city of Mariupol in Ukraine following the Russian invasion

The investigation revealed a series of failures. Mohammed A.'s asylum request was rejected in December 2022, and he should have been deported to Lithuania, the country through which he entered the European Union. He appealed the decision, and it was only in February 2025 that the court rejected his appeal. Last July, immigration authorities requested to arrest him ahead of his deportation, but the court rejected the request, claiming it was "so flawed that it couldn't even be examined."

Initially, police suspected the girl's death was the result of an accident or suicide, and only following the discovery of a large quantity of the suspect's DNA traces on the girl's shoulder did authorities in the state conclude that this was murder. "This involves a quantity indicating a strong push, not accidental contact," the prosecutor stated.

The suspect was transferred to a closed psychiatric facility after a diagnosis determined that he suffers from schizophrenia and refused to speak with investigators. The prosecution is now examining his competency to stand trial. The investigation revealed that Mohammed A. used several different identities. "We're now checking multiple names," he was quoted in Bild, adding that the girl was a "random victim."

The murder sparked public outrage in Germany. The Interior Minister of Lower Saxony from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) said that "it's impossible to explain to citizens how people remain in Germany for years when another country in the union is responsible for them."

Geisleden Mayor Markus Janitzki, who knew the family since they arrived from Ukraine, described Liana as "a hardworking and beloved girl who learned German quickly and was a role model for her younger siblings."

In an interview with local media, the mother spoke about her daughter's last conversation. "Liana was speaking with her grandfather on the phone moments before she was pushed. He said her voice sounded worried." The mother, who rejected police claims of accident or suicide from the beginning, said that "she had big plans for the future. She had just started an internship at a dental clinic two months ago. This wasn't an accident."

"I'm sure he'll escape punishment," the mother said regarding the suspect's psychiatric diagnosis, "after he 'recovers' he'll live without pangs of conscience and commit more crimes, because he knows that next time he'll pretend to be mentally ill again."

27 religious organizations launched a federal lawsuit Tuesday against the Trump administration's decision to revoke longstanding protections that limited immigration enforcement at houses of worship, The Washington Post reported.

The lawsuit, filed in the District of Columbia, represents Christian and Jewish groups with millions of American members. The religious organizations argue that the policy change forces congregations to violate their religious obligations to protect immigrant congregants and has led to decreased attendance at services and social programs due to immigration enforcement concerns.

For decades, federal authorities maintained a policy against conducting immigration enforcement in "sensitive locations" or "protected areas." Immigration officials could only carry out operations near places of worship under emergency circumstances or with advance written approval from senior supervisors.

"Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America's schools and churches to avoid arrest," a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said when announcing the change. As part of President Donald Trump's renewed immigration enforcement push, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials received directives to increase daily arrests from several hundred to between 1,200 and 1,500.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a directive on Trump's first day in office instructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection officers to use "discretion along with a healthy dose of common sense" regarding enforcement at sensitive locations.

Schools, which were also designated as sensitive locations under the previous policy, have been working to assure immigrant parents that their children can safely attend classes, The Washington Post reported.

This legal challenge marks the second such case, following an earlier lawsuit filed in Maryland federal court by Quaker congregations and other religious groups including the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and a Sikh temple.

The plaintiffs include major religious denominations – Reform Judaism, Episcopalians, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the African Methodist Episcopal Church – each representing over a million worshippers nationwide.

"Throughout Jewish history, we have known the hardship and persecution of living as immigrants," Rabbi Rick Jacobs of the Union for Reform Judaism said. "We are inspired by those experiences across the generations, as well as the repeated biblical commandment to welcome the stranger, to ensure that our congregations remain places where immigrants – including those who may be undocumented – can enter to worship, seek pastoral counsel, learn, socialize, obtain needed services and support, or to act as caregivers for those who do."

"Churches are, and have always been, places of prayer, solace, and safety since the time of Jesus Christ; this does not change with any new emperor, king, or president," Rev. Laura Everett, executive director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches, said.

The Justice Department responded Friday to the Maryland case, arguing that the plaintiffs' concerns were based on hypothetical scenarios. Officials noted that enforcement near religious buildings had been permitted for decades, with the only change being the removal of mandatory supervisory pre-approval.

Pope Francis addressed these immigration policies Tuesday, calling on American Catholics to reject discriminatory narratives that cause unnecessary suffering to migrant and refugee communities.

President-elect Donald Trump is preparing to name Stephen Miller, his chief immigration strategist, as White House deputy chief of staff for policy, according to two sources familiar with the plans who spoke to CNN.

Miller, who previously served as senior adviser and chief speechwriter during Trump's first term, is expected to take on an expanded role focused on implementing restrictive immigration policies in the president-elect's second administration. The longtime Trump confidant has been heavily involved in transition planning and will significantly influence future staffing decisions, sources told CNN.

In recent months, Miller has increased his public presence, frequently accompanying Trump on his private plane to campaign events and emerging as a more visible speaker at rallies.

When asked about Miller's anticipated appointment, Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said, "President-elect Trump will begin making decisions on who will serve in his second administration soon. Those decisions will be announced when they are made."

Miller has outlined ambitious plans for immigration enforcement, stating in a recent Fox News interview that mass deportations would commence "on Inauguration Day, as soon as he takes the oath of office." He has called for increasing deportations tenfold to exceed one million annually.

During Trump's first administration, Miller was a key architect of several controversial immigration policies, including family separation at migrant detention facilities and travel restrictions on individuals from predominantly Muslim nations.

Since Trump left office, Miller founded America First Legal, an advisory group that contributed to Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation's comprehensive conservative blueprint for the next Republican administration. Though Trump has repeatedly distanced himself from Project 2025 on the campaign trail, claiming no knowledge of its origins, the initiative maintains close ties to Miller and other Trump allies.

In a 2023 interview with The New York Times, Miller detailed plans to construct military-operated detention centers in Texas border regions to house immigrants awaiting deportation. He acknowledged that, as in Trump's first term, many immigration policies would likely face legal challenges but would primarily rely on executive orders rather than new legislation.

"Any activists who doubt President Trump's resolve in the slightest are making a drastic error: Trump will unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers to implement the most spectacular migration crackdown," Miller told The Times.

The UK government has announced plans for a "large surge" in deportation flights for failed asylum seekers and others without legal right to remain in the country, according to reporting by the BBC. The plans, unveiled by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, include hiring 100 additional intelligence officers to target people-smuggling gangs and reopening immigration removal centers in Hampshire and Oxfordshire.

Cooper stated her intention to introduce a "better-controlled" system to replace "the chaos that has blighted the system for far too long." The move is part of Labour's efforts to tackle illegal immigration and small boat crossings in the English Channel.

Home Office Minister Seema Malhotra reported that nine "return" flights have taken off in the six weeks since Labour won the election, including one carrying over 200 people. The government aims to achieve "the highest rate of removals of those with no right to be here" since Theresa May's premiership in 2018 over the next six months.

Dr. Peter Walsh, a senior researcher at the Migration Observatory, told BBC Radio 4's Today program that reaching 2018 levels would require 3,000 more removals this year than last. He described this as "an achievable goal, but it's a pretty low bar," noting that 2018 saw the lowest number of enforced removals in 20 years, excluding the pandemic period.

The Conservative opposition criticized Labour's approach, with shadow home secretary James Cleverly stating the plan was "not ambitious enough." He accused the government of giving "an effective amnesty to thousands of illegal migrants" and failing to appoint a head for their "phantom border command."

Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council charity, urged the government to support voluntary returns rather than expanding detention programs. He told the BBC, "Instead of wasting taxpayers' money on expanding detention places the government should be investing in what are called voluntary returns programs."

The government's announcement includes the deployment of 100 new specialist intelligence officers and investigators to the National Crime Agency (NCA) to disrupt criminal smuggling gangs and prevent dangerous boat crossings. The NCA currently has around 70 active investigations into people smuggling and trafficking groups.

Other measures include redeploying staff to work on returning failed asylum seekers, increasing sanctions against employers who hire workers illegally, and reopening the Campsfield and Haslar detention centers in Oxfordshire and Hampshire, adding 290 beds to the system.

More than 19,000 people have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year, representing a 10% increase from last year but a decrease from the peak of over 21,000 in the same period in 2022.

The Labour government has scrapped the previous Conservative administration's Rwanda scheme, which aimed to deter Channel crossings by deporting some migrants to the East African country. Instead, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to focus on combating criminal gangs arranging the crossings and expediting the process of returning those with no legal right to remain in the UK.

Throughout Joe Biden's presidency, there have been persistent claims that he is being "managed" by a group of advisors and Democratic leaders who not only support him but potentially steer his policies. The frequent calls from former President Barack Obama to the White House have fueled this perception, suggesting that Biden's tenure is effectively Obama's third term – albeit a far more radical one.

Now, in light of the incumbent president's recent on-air stumble, it seems the proverbial smoking gun has been found. The president is functioning at a subpar level, while an extreme progressive group, led by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, is driving US foreign policy. None of the issues concerning American citizens and those of other nations, such as Israel and Ukraine, are being adequately addressed or resolved.

In a world rife with aggressive forces, the unflattering image of an American president – the leader of the free world – appearing weak and incoherent encourages them to exploit opportunities. Biden's decline mirrors the collapse of his Middle East policy vis-à-vis Iran and its proxies, as well as the incomprehensible crisis at the southern border with Mexico. This porous region is drawing millions of migrants of all types into the United States, including criminal and terrorist elements.

Donald Trump didn't gain supporters following the televised confrontation early Friday morning. But Biden lost a great deal, according to the veteran Fox News commentator Bret Baier's simple summary. For many months, the question of whether Biden will actually be the Democratic presidential nominee has loomed large. Nikki Haley repeatedly stated that he won't be. Speculation abounds – if not him, then who? The situation has deteriorated to the point where New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman is pleading with Biden to step aside. A sad sight to use a word Trump is so fond of.

Serious reporters with extensive Biden coverage have repeatedly claimed that Biden is self-confident and doesn't entertain the thought of withdrawing from the race. Too arrogant, too stubborn. Even now, he justified his failure with the excuse that it's difficult to contend with a liar. Leaders are expected to deal with other leaders who are far worse than "liars" – mass murderers, for instance.

There was a point when it seemed that former President Obama and his allies in the foreign relations establishment and the party were comfortable having a president who was weak in many respects in the White House. This situation invites evasion of responsibility. Every mishap is filed away as an event that Biden can't be expected to handle. Conversely, those responsible for strategic blunders are not called to account.

The case of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stands out, where contact with him was lost until it was discovered he was hospitalized, and President Biden was completely unaware. The Defense Secretary! A person supposed to be responsible for world peace takes his hands off the wheel. Perhaps this is what Trump alluded to when he spoke about Biden not firing any generals.

The Democrats' problem now is that they have no candidate who can motivate their voters to turn out en masse at the polls or make an effort to fill out early voting ballots. Not even Biden himself. Kamala Harris intimidates people; California Governor Gavin Newsom hasn't logged enough miles on the national stage. And Michelle Obama? It seems too late for her to suddenly jump into the boiling political cauldron.

The government said Tuesday that it has abandoned its plan to forcibly deport African migrants who are in Israel illegally.

The government had been working for months on an arrangement to expel thousands of mostly Eritrean and Sudanese men who arrived in Israel through Egypt's Sinai Desert.

In a response to Israel's Supreme Court, which has been examining the case, the government wrote, "At this stage, the possibility of carrying out an unwilling deportation to a third country is not on the agenda."

The migrants will once again be able to renew their residency permits every 60 days, as they were before the deportation push, the government said.

The migrants and rights groups claim they are seeking asylum and are fleeing war and persecution. The government says they are job seekers and that it has every right to protect its borders.

Despite Tuesday's climb down, the government said immigration authorities would still try to deport migrants voluntarily, drawing criticism from rights group Amnesty International.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later said that after failing to reach an agreement with any country to take them in, he would try to draft legislation that would allow the reopening of detention centers in Israel for the migrants.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan tweeted on Tuesday: "I repeat: There is no point in reopening Holot [detention facility] without passing the 'override bill' [legislation that would give the Knesset power to overrule High Court decisions revoking laws] and rewriting the parts of the law canceled by the High Court, which allowed the Holot facility to serve as an incentive to encourage infiltrators to leave the country."

The government's reversal was welcomed by those facing deportation.

"I'm thrilled. I'm speechless. I was so scared every day. If I can stay here it will be good, I've lived here so long. I have a job. I have Israeli friends. I am used to the place," said Ristom Haliesilase, a 34-year-old Eritrean who lives in Tel Aviv and works as a carer for the elderly.

Around 4,000 migrants have left Israel for Rwanda and Uganda since 2013 under a voluntary program, but Netanyahu has come under pressure from his voter base to expel thousands more.

The headquarters of a pro-deportation group based in south Tel Aviv – home to one of the largest concentrations of illegal migrants – criticized the government.

"The state has long since lost its credibility and ability to govern. All the earlier solutions [to the migrant crisis] were dismissed out of hand by the High Court of Justice, and the residents of south Tel Aviv are stuck in the terrible reality the migrants have created in the city's southern neighborhoods," the group said in a statement.

The south Tel Aviv activists said that now is the time for the government to pass the override bill.

"The government must take back governance. The High Court can't rule over the country; our fate can't be left in the hands of people who don't care about the citizens of Israel," the group said.

After pulling out of a U.N.-backed relocation plan a few weeks ago, Israel shifted efforts towards finalizing an arrangement to send the migrants against their will to Uganda.

A number of migrant rights groups then petitioned the Supreme Court to block any such policy.

Amnesty also welcomed Tuesday's decision but criticized Israel's plan to continue with voluntary deportations.

"In reality, there is nothing voluntary about them. Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers agree to them under pressure. Israel remains under the obligation not to transfer anyone to a country" where they would be unsafe, said Magdalena Mughrabi, Amnesty deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa.

Amnesty will closely monitor the deportations, it said.

The group Stop the Deportation put it more bluntly, saying, "There is no third country and there won't be any third country. It's time for the government to find real, long-term solutions for the asylum seekers and the residents of south Tel Aviv that will address the issues that have been created over the course of years.

"There needs to be a stop to the wool being pulled over people's eyes. Every shekel wasted on inciteful, hateful campaigns is a shekel that should be invested in the absorption and relocation [in Israel] of the asylum seekers."
