Israeli authorities have arrested an educator from northern Israel for posting a video on social media that initially appeared to celebrate the October 7 Hamas attacks, as the nation marked one year since the deadly assault, although this was later slammed as a misinterpretation of the meaning of the video.

The 41-year-old woman from Tamra, in the Lower Galilee, uploaded a TikTok video of herself dancing at a Nazareth school where she works to the song "Another Good Time," with a caption that reads, "On this day 7/10/23," but it then turned out that this video had in fact been uploaded well before the war broke out and may have just been simply reposted under the "on this day" option on TikTok.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir commented on the early morning arrest, stating: "A teacher from a Nazareth school uploaded a video to social media yesterday, showing herself dancing to the song 'Good Times' with the date 7.10.23 in the background. I forwarded the footage to the team I established within the Israel Police to handle online incitement, and she was promptly arrested at her home in Tamra. We have zero tolerance for incitement and terrorism supporters."

Knesset Member Limor Son Har-Melech (Otzma Yehudit) sent a letter to Education Minister Yoav Kisch demanding the immediate dismissal of the "educator." She wrote: "As the people of Israel attempt to heal from the horrors of the October 7 massacre, it's unthinkable that individuals within our education system would express joy and support for such atrocities."

Son Har-Melech added: "Terrorism supporters among us pose a clear and immediate danger and must be dealt with decisively. It's unacceptable for someone educating future generations to express support for such acts or convey any legitimacy for terrorism to their students. Such teachers cannot remain in our education system for even one more day. Given the severity of this act, I demand her immediate dismissal and an examination into revoking any dismissal benefits to clearly demonstrate that any support, overt or covert, for terrorism, will face the full force of the law. The education system must send a message of zero tolerance for terrorism supporters and their ideologies."

Kisch addressed the educator's arrest, writing: "I commend the Israel Police for their decisive action. This is what we expect and how they should respond to any display of incitement and support for terrorism. I want to clarify that this is not a teacher employed by the Ministry of Education, but an external instructor. While the investigation into her case is ongoing, and certainly if she is found guilty, she will not set foot in the education system again."

The suspect will be brought before the Nazareth Magistrate's Court, where authorities will request an extension of her detention.

The UN Mideast envoy warned Tuesday that without quick and decisive action to address the key drivers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict the region risks plunging into "another deadly escalation of violence."

Tor Wennesland told the UN Security Council it was essential that the parties "calm things on the ground," reduce violence across the West Bank, avoid unilateral steps including new settlement construction, and solidify the May ceasefire that ended Operation Guardian of the Walls, which Israel fought against Hamas infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

In addition, he called for urgent action to tackle the severe fiscal and economic crisis threatening the stability of Palestinian institutions in the West Bank. But he warned: "Even a full and immediate financial package may not be sufficient or come quickly enough – if at all – to help buffer the consequences of the current situation."

Wennesland told reporters afterward there was "broad consensus" among the 15 council members that to prevent a possible imminent conflict "there needs to be a pushback on activities in and around Jerusalem and the West Bank," financial stability for the Palestinian Authority so it can pay salaries, and a halt to settlement activity.

As the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Wennesland represented the United Nations at the first in-person meeting in two years of envoys of the so-called Quartet of Mideast mediators on Nov. 18 in Norway's capital, Oslo.

A statement from the Quartet – the UN, US, Russia and the European Union – urged Israel and the Palestinians to address the ongoing violence, settlements, and "the untenable fiscal crisis within the Palestinian Authority." It welcomed steps announced by Israel "to reach out to the Palestinian Authority and assist with the fiscal crisis" but expressed deep concern at developments in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza.

Wennesland called Tuesday for a coordinated approach to "restore a political horizon that will help stop the endless cycle of crisis management and move back towards meaningful negotiations to end the [Israeli] occupation and resolve the conflict on the basis of UN resolutions, international law and previous agreements."

He said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres supported holding a Quartet meeting at ministerial level to focus on medium and longer-term issues to achieve a two-state solution, and he has spoken to the other members, but "we are not there yet." He added that the envoys are working very hard and are in weekly contact.

Russia's deputy UN ambassador Dmitry Polyansky also warned of the risks of "large-scale hostilities" like the Israel-Hamas conflict in May and called on the international community to urgently ensure stability on the ground, provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinians, and create conditions for resuming peace negotiations.

He said the Quartet, which was established in 2002, is the only internationally recognized body to bring the Middle East peace process back on track. It has been criticized for its failure to get either Israel or the Palestinian Authority to change their policies and negotiate an end to their more than three decades-old conflict.

Polyansky said Russia has been pushing for a ministerial meeting of the Quartet which Moscow feels "is overdue, but not everyone from our partners is ready for such a move right now."

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who recently visited Israel and the West Bank, told the Security Council that the Biden administration still strongly believes in a two-state solution "in which a Jewish and democratic Israel lives in peace alongside a sovereign, viable Palestinian state."

She reiterated US opposition to Israeli settlement expansion, saying "the practice has reached a critical juncture, and it is now undermining even the very viability of a negotiated two-state solution."

Thomas-Greenfield said Israel and the Palestinians "are locked in a spiral of distrust" that is preventing cooperation, and rebuilding "some degree of confidence in each other" is key to advancing toward peace.

She made no mention of the Quartet but said that in her meetings "both sides spoke of the need for confidence-building measures to break down the walls of distrust."

Trust-building needs to be worked out mainly between Israelis and Palestinians, the US ambassador said, but the Security Council can facilitate constructive steps by enforcing its resolutions "to constrain Iran's regional malign activities, nuclear threats, support for terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah."

Thomas-Greenfield said the council could also denounce incitement to violence by terrorist organizations or individuals and promote efforts to improve the lives of ordinary Palestinians by urging Israel to grant more work and building permits and facilitating humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to Gaza.

Israel's infection rate, now at 1.01%, is the lowest recorded in the country since mid-July, according to Health Ministry data. Of the 85,956 people who tested for the virus Sunday, 810 were found to have the disease.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

The reproduction rate is 0.73.

There are 11,826 active cases of the virus, the lowest number recorded since Aug. 7. There are 279 people in serious condition. The number of seriously ill people on ventilators, which currently stands at 150, is also on the decline.

Although 1,303,484 have recovered from the coronavirus since the outbreak of the pandemic, 8,049 have died.

On the vaccination front, 3,906,905 Israelis have received all three available doses of the coronavirus vaccine. While 5,715,624 have received two doses, 6,219,981 have received at least one dose.

According to a report in The New York Times on Sunday, while Israel was once a world leader in vaccination per capita, it and the US are now lagging behind.

Based on data collected by Oxford University in the UK, the newspaper noted that despite having a surplus of vaccine doses, the US "has fully vaccinated only 57% of its population ... Resistance remains high among some demographic groups and within some specific workforce sectors, including police officers and firefighters."

As for Israel, The New York Times notes that Arabs, Orthodox Jews, and younger people remain vaccine-hesitant. "The country reports that just 63% of its population is fully vaccinated, less than South Korea, Italy and some 40 other countries."

"We do not have the barriers of supply or distribution or access to the vaccine," Dr. Leana Wen, a public health professor at George Washington University, told The New York Times. "The only barrier at this point is people's willingness to be vaccinated. That's what's going wrong compared to other countries that have solved their supply, distribution, and access issues."

Meanwhile, hospitals across the country have come out in a show of support for Rabin Medical Center Monday after the hospital was accused of murder in an image that went viral online.

Officials at the Petah Tikva hospital have filed a police complaint after an image of an inscription on a gravestone for a woman who died of the coronavirus accusings the hospital of her murder went viral on social media.

The headstone reading, "Murdered by Beilinson Hospital in the Corona Ward. May God avenge her"

In a statement, senior hospital administrators said they were "shocked by the inscription on the headstone and express disgust at the serious, inciting statement." It said it would weigh legal action on the matter.

"Without violating the medical confidentiality of the deceased, we will just note that this was an elderly and unvaccinated woman who was brought to the hospital after being treated at her home for a significant time and was admitted after experiencing a heart attack and suffering pulmonary embolism and died from raging coronavirus disease.

"Medical staff treated her with endless devotion, constantly accompanied by dialogue with the family," they said.

At 11:00 a.m., hospitals such as Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv, Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, Assuta Medical Center in Ashdod, Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa, and Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba simultaneously posted the hashtag #WeareallRabinMedicalCenter and images of the hospital on their social media accounts.

Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz also condemned the image, saying, "These are inappropriate, defamatory words. The staff work to save people's lives. Hundreds and thousands have been saved. And we should be thankful and not defame and slander."

Netflix launched a "Palestinian Stories" film collection on its streaming service Wednesday. Subscribers will find 32 one-sided films that incite against IDF soldiers and the state of Israel and ignore Palestinian terrorism, with additional films added later on.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

The films offer a one-sided view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and include scenes depicting interrogation by Israeli security officials and life in a refugee camp.

In its announcement, Netflix quoted Palestinian director May Odeh, whose film "The Crossing" appears in the category, as saying: "I'm glad to finally have alternative Palestinian films accessible to wide audiences through Netflix. We all in the Palestinian film industry have been eager to share our narrative with the world through our authentic creative productions as an alternative to news reporting. I can't thank the team at Netflix and Front Row enough for the effort to make this happen."

Matan Peleg, the director of right-wing watchdog group Im Tirzu, suggested, "If Netflix wants to tell the Palestinian story, it should start by contacting the thousands of bereaved families who were impacted as a result of the murderous Palestinian terrorism. Netflix is following in the path of Ben & Jerry's [which announced plans to stop selling ice cream in Judea and Samaria] in a pathetic and shallow attempt to brainwash hundreds of millions of people. The result will be exactly the same as that of Ben & Jerry's – huge financial losses."

He continued: "Netflix isn't launching a category for the atrocities in Syria, where nearly one million people died over the last 10 years, or about the crimes in China. Israel is the only great criminal. We intend to call on the Israeli public and the Israel-supporting public around the world to boycott the company. We will not turn the other cheek. Those who hurt us will get hurt," he said.

Peleg offered the company the following advice: "Instead of creating vapid reality content alongside progressive content, maybe Netflix should try to present what is really happening in the Middle East. For shame!"

In a statement, the streaming service responded to the criticism by saying, "Netflix believes in artistic freedom and continuously invests in authentic stories from around the world. The collection of Palestinian stories will showcase the depth and variety of the Palestinian experience and explore people's lives, dreams, families, friendships, and love.

"Since its launch, Netflix has invested in dozens of Israeli TV shows and films and recently issued an official statement on Twitter and Instagram delineating its opposition to antisemitism in all its forms, including the worrying increase in hate crimes and Holocaust denial," Netflix said.

The Lach Yerushalayim organization and right-wing watchdog group Im Tirzu have contacted Facebook upon learning a Palestinian media outlet with over one million followers has been using the social media platform to incites terrorism online.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

The network, by the name of Jerusalem Square, operates from the city, issuing daily reports on terrorist operatives killed or wounded while working against "operation forces."

In one such post on Aug. 12, the network commemorated the 27th anniversary of the "martyrdom" of terrorists who abducted Sgt. Nachshon Wachsman, a dual US-Israeli citizen, in 1994 and then murdered him when IDF forces attempted to rescue him.

On its Facebook page, the organization expresses support for these activists, glorifying them and campaigning for their release. The network also expresses support for imprisoned Sheik Raed Salah, head of the outlawed northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel and the man believed to be behind the Facebook page.

Lach Yerushalayim, which promotes Israeli sovereignty over all of Jerusalem, and Im Tirzu researchers contacted Facebook upon discovering a series of posts that amount to incitement, including by glorifying terrorist "martyrs" and terrorists in recent weeks. The social media giant, however, has refused to remove the page, claiming it did not violate community guidelines.

Lach Yerushalayim Chairman Maor Tzemach said: "The terrorist and incitement organizations are taking advantage of social media to glorify terrorists. We demand Facebook and Twitter immediately remove Jerusalem Square's incitement pages. Likewise, we demand Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev immediately order the closure and removal of the Hamas organization-aligned Jerusalem Square from Jerusalem."

Im Tirzu head Matan Peleg said, "Under our noses, a network was established that is in fact a ticking time bomb. Campaigns for the release of terrorist bodies and imprisoned terrorists, the glorification of murderers, posts about the 1929 Hebron massacre of dozens of Jews, and intense coverage" of the inciting Sheikh Raed Salah. All this certainly justifies the immediate removal of the Facebook page, but despite our complaints to Facebooks, the page has not been removed.

"I call on the Israel Police to act within the speediest and most efficient framework of the law to prevent the continued incitement happening on Facebook and Instagram on Jerusalem Square's page. If Facebook and Instagram do not remove the page, the police will need to protect Israeli citizens. Every day this page [continues to] exist, every day this network's offices exist is a serious threat to the citizens of Israel."

Religious Zionist Party head Bezalel Smotrich said: "There is no place for incitement to murder on social media. When Facebook wants to, they know how to block [content].

"A few weeks ago, I contacted Facebook management to report pages that praise terrorist operatives, the pages were temporarily blocked. I call on Facebook to block the pages in support of terrorists and stop the terrible incitement against Israel's citizens."

World Zionist Organization Chairman and acting Jewish Agency head Yaakov Hagoel noted that "at a Knesset hearing, Facebook committed to acting forcefully against antisemitic activity online. Activities that call for terrorism against Jews are antisemitism in the most blatant sense. I demand Facebook remove this page immediately and intend to contact Facebook's management on the subject."

A report by UN Watch, a Geneva-based nongovernmental organization that monitors UN activity, found 113 instances of incitement to violence by UNRWA staff, in clear violation of UNRWA's rules.

Among the social media posts cited by UN Watch was one from math teacher Nahed Shrarawi in which she shared a video that included an image of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler along with inspirational quotes. Another UNRWA teacher in the West Bank by the name of Husni Masri shared a post promoting conspiracy theories about Jews, including that Jewish people want to rule the world and destroy Islam and were responsible for the coronavirus.

According to UN Watch, incitement to violence and hatred among UNRWA's 30,000 staff members is a far greater problem than the report shows as the incidents included in the report pertain to those with Facebook accounts who openly identify as agency employees.

UN Watch emphasized that since UNRWA has not fired or taken any administrative action against those behind the inciting posts despite requests from the NGO, the agency was fully responsible for their actions.

Israel's Ambassador to the UN and the US demanded UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini take action against those cited in the UN Watch report. The UN body, however, rejected Erdan's demand, announcing it would host a workshop for employees on the issue instead.

Erdan rejected Lazzarini's solution, retorting: "You cannot correct hatred for the Jewish people with a workshop for how to use the internet."

In a letter to Lazzarini, he insisted that if the UN agency "is indeed committed to a 'policy of zero tolerance toward hatred and antisemitism,' then the answer must be immediate dismissals and not participating in a 'tolerance workshop.'"

Facebook is allowing Palestinians to manage fan pages dedicated to terrorists who killed Israeli citizens, according to a review of the social media platform by National Religious Party leader Bezalel Smotrich.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

In an urgent letter to Facebook Israel CEO Adi Soffer Teeni, Smotrich said the decision to leave terrorists' pages up while permanently banning radical right-wing activists Baruch Marzel and Michael Ben-Ari raised concerns the firm was violating users' freedom of expression.

"Unfortunately, Facebook this week closed the accounts of Baruch Marzel and Michael Ben-Ari. Their conduct raises serious concerns of improper intervention in freedom of expression and the Israeli discourse space. While Mr. Marzel and Ben-Air posted completely legitimate posts, I hereby draw your attention to Facebook accounts that call for violence and have the potential to constitute actual incitement," Smotrich wrote.

Religious Zionist Party head Bezalel Smotrich is seen outside of the Knesset in Jerusalem (Oren Ben Hakoon)

The lawmaker cited six Facebook fan pages dedicated to terrorists in his letter, including one dedicated to arch-terrorist Muhammad Naifa, an Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades commander in Tulkarm sentenced to life in prison for a series of terrorist attacks, including a 2002 attack on Kibbutz Metzer that killed five residents, two of them children. A second fan page cited by Smotrich is dedicated to Mohammad Jayyousi, one of the founders of the Brigades who received six life sentences and 55 years in prison for planning a shooting attack that killed six.

In addition, the Religious Zionist Party leader drew the Facebook chief's attention to pages belonging to terrorists that had been released from prison.

Smotrich demanded Facebook remove the accounts and "immediately end the incitement toward the murder of Jews."

He told Israel Hayom: "The terrorism and encouragement of violence against Jews under the auspices of social media must stop. Facebook appears to have completely lost its moral compass. Instead of blocking terrorists and inciters, they harass right-wing activists as part of puzzling silencing campaigns. I contacted the CEO of Facebook Israel and demanded terrorist pages be taken down. We will not accept incitement against Israeli citizens, and we will not accept harm to Israeli citizens,

Facebook has yet to respond.

A parole board convened by the Ramle Magistrate's Court Sunday recommended against commuting the sentence of Night of the Pitchforks terrorist Mohammed Hassan Agbariya, in a letter to President Isaac Herzog Sunday.

Agbariya is currently serving a life sentence for his role in the brutal 1992 murder of three Israeli soldiers.

"The prisoner took an active and significant in the event that had been burned into the national consciousness … The committee was presented with the prisoner's requests, the justifications for the request, as well as a great deal of material and reports from professionals. Likewise, we were presented with the position of the victims of the crime," the board members wrote.

"From the material we reviewed, it appears that the prisoner is continuing to engage in negative ideological activity, the likes of which brought him to carry out the murders from within the prison walls. We did not find that the prisoner has changed his ways or abandoned said ideology," they concluded.

Although the commutation of security prisoners' sentences is a rare occurrence, by law, the parole board was required to examine the request.

Upon learning Agbariya's request for parole had been denied, the relatives of Guy Friedman, one of the victims of the attack, issued a statement saying: "We have now received with great relief and joy the announcement from the parole board representative that the terrorist's request was denied. On behalf of our family, we thank everyone who tirelessly supported and helped us with this painful subject."

In a statement, the "Choose Life" forum of bereaved families that has accompanied the Friedmans protested the very fact the parole board convened to discuss the request.

Maurice Hirsch, director of legal strategies at Palestinian Media Watch, which assisted the Friedmans throughout the process, said: "We must welcome the board's decision to reject the terrorists' request to commute his sentence. In the absence of the death sentence, his place is in jail, for the rest of his life. We must now examine the various arrangements that allow for the mitigation of terrorists' sentences, with the goal of issuing comprehensive corrections so that we do not need to deal with these kinds of discussions again."

On Feb. 14, 1992, Agbariya, along with his brother Ibrahim Hassan Agbariya, their cousin Yahya Mustafa, and Mohammed Tawfik Jabarin, entered the encampment near Kibbutz Gilad in Ramot Menashe, where recent recruits had been engaged in field training, murdering Yaakov Dubinsky, Sergei Zatziriyani, and Yuri Preda.

Israel Hayom has learned that despite his request for parole, Agbariya has continued to incite to terrorism from prison.

In an article posted just a few weeks ago by the website of Asra Voice Radio, the self-described radio station of Palestinian prisoners, Agbariya called to continue the struggle against Israel.

On Sunday, the courts are set to review a request for parole from Mohammed Hassan Agbariya, who along with three other attackers was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of three Israeli soldiers in 1992 in what came to be known as the "Night of the Pitchforks" attack. While the court is required to review Agbariya's request by law, security prisoners are rarely released on parole.

Earlier in the week, Justice Minister Gideon Sa'ar contacted dozens of lawmakers, including those from his own New Hope party, who oppose Agbariya's release. In a letter to Sa'ar, Religious Zionist Party MK Orit Strock, along with 59 other lawmakers, said they expected the New Hope leader to "oppose outright the release of the rotten murderer who has the blood of three of our soldiers on his hands."

"The resistance cannot retreat from what began in the battle of the sword of Jerusalem or go back to the mentality of a 'resolution to the conflict,' Agbariya wrote in the article, in which he also praised rioters in Jaffa and young people in Abu Ghosh fighting against the Jewish state.

In another article published around a year and a half ago, the terrorist called for the Palestinian nationalist movement to align with China to fight Israel.

"From a political standpoint, the Palestinian resistance will begin to find its path, first wisely and secretly, and then publicly, to fight for the hearts of the Chinese nation and its leadership through   emphasizing a common cause between the two peoples," he wrote.

Sa'ar is expected to oppose Agbariya's release.

In a statement, his office said: "The positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Gideon Sa'ar are well-known to the public. In general, Minister Sa'ar's position rules out the commutation of sentences for terrorists who committed acts of murder. As far as this specific case is concerned, according to the law, the minister offers his opinion following the recommendation of the parole board once all the relevant material has been brought before him and before it is brought to the president for his decision. That is also what will happen in this case."

Over 100 teachers and other employees of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees have posted content that was either antisemitic or promoted hatred to social media, according to a new report by UN Watch.

The Geneva-based nongovernmental organization that monitors UN activity found 113 instances of incitement to violence by UNRWA staff, in clear violation of UNRWA's rules, according to the report.

Hillel Neuer, UN Watch executive director, said: "Around the world, educators who incite hate and violence are removed, yet UNRWA, despite proclaiming zero tolerance for incitement, knowingly and systematically employs purveyors of terror and anti-Jewish hate.

"We call on the governments that fund UNWRA to take action to stop the vicious cycle of generations being taught to hate and violently attack Jews. We demand that UNRWA address the core problem and demonstrate its genuine commitment to basic norms of education in its schools by publicly condemning UNWRA employees who incite terrorism and antisemitism, removing them from their positions, and creating an independent and impartial investigation of all of its staff," Neuer said.
