An unidentified individual impersonating Canadian singer Justin Bieber successfully deceived XS Nightclub management in Las Vegas Saturday night, gaining access to the venue's stage through what officials described as an elaborate multi-step scheme. According to the Daily Mail, Wynn properties issued a lifetime ban to the impersonator after discovering the fraud.

The doppelganger convinced nightclub staff he was the Grammy-winning pop star through coordinated efforts with accomplices. Wynn officials stated the impersonator was removed immediately once the deception was recognized and permanently barred from all company properties. "As soon as the error was recognized, he was removed from the resort and denied future entry," Wynn representatives told TMZ Monday. The incident unfolded at the upscale venue over the weekend when the impersonator's team contacted club management.

DJ Gryffin, who worked at XS Nightclub that evening, described the sophisticated nature of the scheme on Instagram. "You're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation," the video's text read. "It started when Justin Bieber showed up in the club and I was told he wanted to perform. Dark venue and loud music didn't help here," the DJ said. "So his 'team' said he wanted to perform 'Sorry', little did I know I was about to be sorry," he added. The fake Bieber and his collaborators persuaded the staff that the Canadian pop superstar would participate in the night's entertainment program, granting the impersonator access to the XS stage, according to the Daily Mail. Gryffin admitted he was convinced by the performance, welcoming the impostor into his DJ booth at the trendy establishment.

Club patrons reacted enthusiastically to what they believed was an authentic Justin Bieber appearance. "The place went wild," for the supposed celebrity, Gryffin revealed, expressing shock when informed about the elaborate prank. Eventually, venue staff recognized the deception and ejected the impersonator from the property.

"This is actually amazing," one user commented about the impersonator's scheme. Another questioned, "You didn't see the difference?" in response to the DJ's Instagram reel that accumulated 1.2 million views.

Authorities said damage at a Tesla service center in Las Vegas on Tuesday, including cars set ablaze, had "some of the hallmarks" of terrorism.

Las Vegas police said the person who used Molotov cocktails and shot rounds into the vehicles at the Tesla Collision Center, 6260 Badura Ave., was still on the loose Tuesday afternoon.

Video that captured the attack showed someone dressed in black damaging at least five Teslas — two of which were engulfed in flames — at 2:45 a.m., police said. The word "resist" was also painted on the front doors of the business, police said, and at least three gunshots were fired into the cars.

"This was a targeted attack against a Tesla facility," Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren said at a news briefing on Tuesday. "We do believe that it is isolated at this time."

However, he said the Metropolitan Police Department had increased its presence at Tesla-related locations in the valley as a precaution.

According to police, the person responsible for the attack used multiple incendiary devices to set the Teslas on fire, and one of the devices was found unexploded in a car. The collision center is located near Jones Boulevard and the 215 Beltway in the southwest valley.

Attorney General Pam Bondi released a statement "regarding a spate of recent attacks on Tesla property" on Tuesday.

"The swarm of violent attacks on Tesla property is nothing short of domestic terrorism," Bondi said in the statement.

The Clark County Fire Department and the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force also are investigating the matter. Agents arrived at the scene early Tuesday, according to FBI Special Agent in Charge Spencer Evans.

Evans said that while it was too early to call the attack an act of terrorism, it had "some of the hallmarks" and a "potential political agenda."

"Violent acts like this are unacceptable, regardless of where they occur," Evans said at Tuesday's news briefing.

He urged anyone intending to commit similar acts to "seriously reconsider."

"It's a federal crime," Evans said. "We will come after you. We will find you and prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law."

While he said he was aware of reports of incidents in other states, Evans added that it was still too early to know if they were connected.

Leaders react

In a post on X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to a video of the burning cars shared by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, saying "this level of violence is insane and deeply wrong."

"Tesla just makes electric cars and has done nothing to deserve these evil attacks," Musk added in his post.

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, former sheriff of Clark County, replied to the post.

"This type of politically-motivated violence is despicable — and those responsible will be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," he wrote.

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., said she had full confidence in law enforcement.

"Let me be clear: these actions are unacceptable, and I condemn them fully," she wrote on X.

Musk leads the new Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, and its goal of trimming federal spending has spurred layoffs and closure announcements across the federal workforce in the first few weeks of the second Trump administration.

Cybertruck explosion

Tuesday's attack on Tesla vehicles in Las Vegas follows a Cybertruck explosion outside Trump International in Las Vegas on New Year's Day.

In that incident, authorities have said Matthew Livelsberger, 37, an active-duty military operations sergeant from Colorado who served in the US Army as a Green Beret, shot himself in the head seconds before his rented Tesla Cybertruck exploded.

Seven bystanders were injured as a result of the explosion at the resort near the Strip, according to police.

Authorities have said Livelsberger likely suffered from PTSD and had other "personal grievances."

Other attacks

Other Tesla dealerships around the country have been the targets of destruction and gunfire. The Associated Press reported Friday that a second person was arrested in connection with a string of vandalism at a Colorado Tesla dealership. Gunshots were also fired at an Oregon Tesla dealership on Thursday for the second time in a week. Four Cybertrucks were also destroyed in a fire in Seattle on March 9.

As well, fire damaged two Cybertrucks at a Kansas City Tesla dealership on Monday night, The Kansas City Star reported.

Bondi, in her statement calling the incidents "domestic terrorism," said the Department of Justice "has already charged several perpetrators with that in mind, including in cases that involve charges with five-year mandatory minimum sentences.

"We will continue investigations that impose severe consequences on those involved in these attacks, including those operating behind the scenes to coordinate and fund these crimes," Bondi said in the statement.

On Tuesday, Koren said police did not have anything notable to report on a general increase in vandalism of Teslas around the valley.

Officials are looking into the possible connection between the Las Vegas explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck and an attack that left 15 dead in New Orleans, President Joe Biden said in a Wednesday evening address to the nation.

One person was killed and seven suffered minor injuries when a Tesla Cybertruck exploded Wednesday morning in front of the entrance to Trump International, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said at a news conference.

The person who died was in the Cybertruck, and McMahill said it was unclear if it was a man or a woman.

According to Jeremy Schwartz, acting special agent in charge for the FBI's Las Vegas office, authorities also are trying to determine whether the explosion was an act of terrorism but believe it was an "isolated incident."

McMahill acknowledged the possible political implications.

"It's a Tesla truck, and we know that Elon Musk is working with President-elect (Donald) Trump and it's the Trump tower, so there's obviously things to be concerned about there, and it's something we continue to look at," he said.

Police were told the truck pulled up to the hotel entrance and emitted smoke, which was followed by a large explosion, McMahill said. He played a drone video for reporters that showed gasoline canisters, camp fuel cans and firework mortars in the bed of the truck.

The hotel was evacuated, and many guests went to Resorts World, he said. According to a spokesperson for Clark County, two people were taken to a hospital. Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Billy Samuels later said they had been released.

Ties to New Orleans attack?

Biden was briefed on the explosion, which happened hours after a driver crashed a truck into a crowd in New Orleans' French Quarter early New Year's Day, killing 15 people before being fatally shot by police.

The truck that exploded in Las Vegas and the truck used in New Orleans were both rented from the Turo app, a "coincidence" authorities will continue to examine, McMahill said.

Biden said the driver who committed the New Orleans attack, a US Army veteran whose truck carried the Islamic State group's flag, had posted videos on social media before the attack in which he said he was inspired by the Islamic State and wanted to kill.

McMahill said authorities are investigating the possibility of a connection between the two events but have not found any indication that the Las Vegas explosion was tied to IS.

"We're very well aware of what has happened in New Orleans with the event that occurred there and the number of victims there and the additional IDs, so, as you can imagine, with an explosion here on iconic Las Vegas Boulevard, we are taking all of the precautions that we need to take to keep our community safe," he said. "We're looking for secondary devices. We're taking it slow."

He said there does not appear to be any additional threat.

The truck was rented from Turo in Colorado and arrived in Las Vegas around 7:30 a.m., according to McMahill. He said it drove up and down Las Vegas Boulevard before pulling into the Trump property.

McMahill said officials know who rented the truck but are not ready to release an identification until they are positive about the name and have notified family.

A Wednesday statement attributed to a Turo spokesman said the company is "heartbroken by the violence perpetrated in New Orleans and Las Vegas, and our prayers are with the victims and families."

"We are actively partnering with law enforcement authorities as they investigate both incidents," the statement continued. "We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards in risk management, thanks to our world-class trust and safety technologies and teams that include experienced former law enforcement professionals."

In a post on X on Wednesday afternoon, Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote: "The whole Tesla senior team is investigating this matter right now. … We've never seen anything like this."

In a later post, he wrote, "We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself."

What witnesses saw

Oscar Terol, who was visiting Las Vegas from Barcelona, Spain, and staying at the hotel, said he saw the explosion through the lobby windows. The force was so strong it knocked him down, he said.

He said he saw what looked like fireworks and heard a series of booms.

The fire was reported just after 8:40 a.m. at 2000 Fashion Show Drive, according to the Clark County Fire Department's PulsePoint app.

Fashion Show Drive was closed in both directions from Sammy Davis Jr. Drive to Las Vegas Boulevard South, according to the Regional Transportation Commission's X account.

Ana Bruce, who was visiting from Brazil, said she heard three explosions.

"The first one where we saw the fire, the second one, I guess, was the battery or something like that, and the third was the big one that smoked the entire area and was the moment when everyone was told to evacuate and stay away," Bruce said.

Her travel companion, Alcides Antunes, took a video that showed flames on the sides of the silver vehicle.

Mike Campbell, a guest at the hotel, said he heard a loud boom that shook the windows of the tower. When he took the elevator to pick up his car around 9:15 a.m., it smelled like paint thinner, he said.

'The smoke was terrible'

Tom and Debra Miller, visiting from Iowa, were in the elevator on the opposite side of Trump tower when the explosion went off. They were evacuated quickly and had not able to return as of 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Debra Miller said the couple spoke to a man who was having breakfast in the lobby when the explosion went off.

"It blew him out of his seat, he said. The smoke was terrible. I don't know if it was the battery, but I can still smell it on me," she said. "I'm just thankful they didn't do it on the Strip last night when everybody was out."

Access points to the parking garages for the Fashion Show mall were blocked by police Wednesday, but multiple people who were inside shopping had no idea an explosion had even occurred. Guests interviewed at Resorts World, which is located near Trump International, didn't know about the explosion, either.

Eric Trump, a son of Trump and executive vice president of the Trump Organization, posted about the fire on X, praising the Fire Department and local law enforcement "for their swift response and professionalism."

Former President Donald Trump spent years selling his name to real estate projects he didn't build. But in Las Vegas, he has sizable ownership and income from a gold-glass tower he developed and put his name atop.

The former president and current candidate for the White House still has ownership in more than 260 units in the 64-story Trump International Hotel Las Vegas, and he earns tens of millions of dollars of income from the property, according to Clark County property records and federal financial disclosures.

Trump partnered on the 1,282-room, non-gaming project with Las Vegas casino owner and friend Phil Ruffin. Property records show that the developers have closed more than $400 million in unit sales since the luxury high-rise opened in 2008. Trump and Ruffin each own half of a joint venture that built the property and owns the hotel and all unsold condo units, according to a court filing in 2022.

The cash flow he receives from America's casino capital could prove helpful as he faces a mountain of court judgments and legal bills from his criminal and civil cases around the country. Trump has spent more than $100 million on lawyers and other legal-related costs since leaving office in 2021, using donations to pay the invoices, The New York Times reported in March. In a 2023 financial disclosure, Trump reported about $33.4 million of income from the off-Strip property, up from about $28.6 million he reported in 2019, according to records from the US Office of Government Ethics.

Trump and Ruffin held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their glitzy high-rise in spring 2008, not long before the economy nosedived. It's also seen Trump supporters and protesters make their presence known outside. In 2012, Trump announced the sale of about 300 condos there to hotel giant Hilton in a deal that brought timeshares to the mix. Hilton later spun off its timeshare division, Hilton Grand Vacations, which boasts 205 units in Trump International.

More recently, The Trump Organization's financial handling of the property was part of a civil fraud case against the former president that led to a New York judge ordering Trump and other defendants to pay more than $450 million total. New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Trump, his company, and senior management in September 2022, alleging they had engaged in years of fraud to obtain more favorable lending and insurance terms and tax benefits. The 200-plus-page complaint included a section on the Las Vegas property.

According to James' office, Trump repeatedly submitted lower property valuations to Nevada tax authorities and higher valuations on financial statements. In 2015, The Trump Organization submitted a $24.95 million valuation to dispute taxes in Nevada. That same year, according to James' office, Trump's financial statement valued the property at about $107.7 million, a figure the company reached "using fraudulent methods."

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will lay out the choices for Nevada this November at an outdoor rally on Sunday in Las Vegas, and sweltering heat is forecast for the event.

The rally, held two days before Nevada's June 11 primary, is scheduled for noon in Sunset Park, 2601 Sunset Road, with access to the public three hours earlier. The National Weather Service is forecasting 89-degree temperatures when gates open at 9 am, rising to 99 by noon before topping out later that afternoon at 102.

Karoline Leavitt, the campaign's national press secretary, said in an email, "In anticipation of the hot temperature in Las Vegas on Sunday, we will have ample water available, misting fans, and cooling tents. We also worked with the United States Secret Service to make exceptions for guests to bring their own water bottles and purse-size umbrellas through security."

Nevada's event isn't the only rally recently that is being held in the desert heat. At a Turning Point rally in Phoenix on Thursday that featured Trump, 11 people were sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion while waiting outside.

Trump's visit to the Silver State comes just over a week after he was found guilty of 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records, becoming the first former president convicted of a felony. Following that verdict, Trump's presidential bid hasn't seemed to falter. His campaign and the Republican National Committee announced a $141 million fundraising haul in May, which the campaign says shows support for Trump while facing what it called the "sham Biden trial." The campaign reported it raised $53 million online in the 24 hours after the guilty verdict was read, noting that 25% of the donors in May were brand new to the 2024 campaign.

Polls consistently show Trump ahead of Biden in Nevada, even though the current president won the Silver State in 2020 by more than 30,000 votes. A Fox News poll released Thursday and conducted June 1 through June 4 shows more Nevadans said they trust Trump to do a better job on the Israel-Hamas war, the economy, and the border.

Ahead of his visit to the Silver State, Trump has made multiple announcements regarding Nevada, encouraging Nevadans to get out and vote in the June 11 primary. He also made an endorsement in Nevada's 4th Congressional District, backing former North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee. Trump has yet to endorse in the key Senate race that could determine party control of the Senate. In a crowded primary field, nationally backed Sam Brown and Dr. Jeff Gunter, former ambassador to Iceland under the Trump administration, have been vying for Trump's support.

Ahead of Trump's visit to the Silver State, Democratic leaders and organizations warned of what another Trump presidency would look like. "We are standing here today together to make it clear before Donald Trump comes to Las Vegas that we will not stand for four more years of failed promises, of anti-worker schemes, or of Trump's billionaire-first scams," said Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno at a press conference Friday with local union workers.

In a press call on Thursday, Democratic Assemblyman Howard Watts discussed actions Trump took as president relating to the environment, such as backing out of the Paris Climate Agreement and giving tax breaks to big oil companies. Biden, on the other hand, has taken more than 320 climate actions and is working to save families money on their energy bills, Watts said. "President Biden has by far done more to cut pollution, protect our environment, and promote our clean energy economy than any US president ever. Trump is out of touch with what our community needs and is the wrong choice for Nevada," Watts said.

Most kids in Israel who dream of being athletes go into soccer, maybe basketball, but Tomer Benny, 19, who was born and raised in northern Tel Aviv, sat down a few years ago at age 13 with his father to watch a film about Mike Tyson and decided that all he wanted to do in life was to be a professional boxer.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Since then he has entered the arena, fallen in love with the victories, even with the punches he took, and is now about to sign his first professional contract, perhaps on the way to a glorious career after grueling work with his trainer Adam Hadad who has been with him since March 2022 and strength coach Yigal Lev.

Tomer Benny (Credit: Jordan Ochoa)

"Everyone initially opposed it, except for my first trainer Mickey Newman," he recounts in a conversation with Israel Hayom. "My friends mocked me, told me I'm not built for this. The parents tried to bribe me. My dad told me 'I'll give you money for three ski vacations on condition that you quit this.' My mom can't come to the fights to this day not just because she doesn't want to see me getting hit, but because it even pains her to see me hitting others. Today the friends who laughed are complimenting me and waiting for me to climb up the ladder."

Q: Tell me a bit about yourself. When did you leave Israel? What have you achieved so far?

Tomer Benny (Photo: Guy Avisar)

"These days I'm in the process of moving from Israel to Vegas. I was granted outstanding athlete status in the army [which allows deferment of service]. I've won six Israeli championships over the recent years across all age brackets including adults. I train six days a week, two sessions each day with the goal of building myself up. Recently I participated in a special event in Germany marking 50 years since the Munich massacre and finished in first place. I had prepared myself for the European championship that took place in November but due to the war, they didn't let us out [from Israel] so all those plans were ruined for me. Additionally, I was recently invited to train by Jamel Herring, a former world champion making a comeback at age 38 and trying to reclaim the world champion title. He trains with my coach Wayne McCullough and now he's trying to nurture young prospects starting out, so he saw me and offered me my first professional contract."

Q: What is your immediate goal and what is the long-term goal?

"The immediate goal is really to sign a professional contract as a prospect, which is someone they believe is young up-and-coming talent and ultimately a contender for the belt. This contract will allow me to get an athlete's visa much faster and the goal is to already have my first fight in a couple of months. Over the next three years, I need to compete in a number of fights per year, rack up as many wins with knockouts as possible so people take notice of me and invite me to more and more events. The fact that I'm Israeli can really help me because we're always in the headlines, and event organizers know it can bring ratings. If we compare my path to a singer's career, for example, I'm at the stage where I'm doing the opening act for big singers, with the goal of one day being in the main event."

Q: You've been mostly in the US in recent months. How hard is it to be in another country while Israel is at war?

"Very hard. I was in Vegas on October 7. Initially, we didn't know what was happening, we thought it was something routine and then we got the videos of the rockets in Sderot and it was terrible. The day after that I had a fight in Vegas and for the first time in my life, I went into the ring not with the desire to win, but just to wave the Israeli flag. I won, waved the flag, and was also named the outstanding fighter of the event. I felt really bad that everyone in Israel was suffering, but I knew there wasn't much I could do besides do my thing."

Q: What does your coach Wayne say about the criticism against Israel? Do you talk about it?

"Wayne comes from Northern Ireland and there are many differing views there. They're very divided in their views, there are entire areas that are separated by walls, there are different Christian denominations. While there are streams that are pro-Palestinian, there are those who think the exact opposite and that's also how Wayne and his family view it. His mother-in-law has an Israeli flag hanging at home and they see a big similarity between us and them, after the history they have with the IRA, who carried out countless terror attacks."

Q: How physically and mentally difficult is this sport really?

"This sport is the most difficult in the world from every aspect. Physically, the punches you take aren't the problem, you recover from those. The problem starts when you don't feel anything and then you realize you're completely out of it and on your way to losing. Mentally it's not simple either, because unlike a team sport where you experience a loss or victory with your friends, here you're alone."

When I ask Benny if he's not scared, he answers honestly that there's no such thing. "I'm constantly scared but fear protects you, warns you, and puts you on alert. I'm not scared of getting hit, the only time I broke my nose for example was when I was surfing. I often think about IDF soldiers in combat. Soldiers are probably scared to fight in Gaza, I'm sure, but they rise above the fear and get into readiness mode."

Thinking outside of the box will be essential if Las Vegas is going to make it through the coronavirus pandemic.

Hometown Allegiant Travel Co. has come up with an idea that definitely is outside the box.

Allegiant Chief Marketing Officer Scott DeAngelo said Wednesday during the company's second-quarter earnings conference call that it will roll out a new program in August that will attempt to boost business and leisure travel to Las Vegas while meetings and conventions are in a virus-driven hiatus.

The new "Work From Vegas" program is being pitched as "Fly, stay, work, play." What Allegiant will ask consumers is, if you're already working remotely from home, why not work from a fabulous Las Vegas resort suite instead so that you can enjoy its restaurants, nightlife, swimming pools and casino entertainment when you're off the clock?

"What we're hearing from some of our customers in our surveys is they're bored after they have to work from home," DeAngelo said in an interview. "So we thought about working with some of our existing resort partners about developing special packages so that people can fly here, check into the resort, telecommute in their normal workday and then be able to enjoy the amenities that are available to hotel guests."

DeAngelo said Allegiant would start making a push to sell the new packages with all of its resort partners this week, and in late August make some announcements about working with one specific partner going forward. He wouldn't name that partner.

Some of the suites in Las Vegas resorts are equipped for business with large conference tables and desks.

DeAngelo said initially Allegiant would book Work From Vegas packages from any of the airline's nonstop destinations to Las Vegas – and there are 58 cities on that list.

Future efforts will focus on cities with young professional communities, including Oakland, California; Cincinnati; Indianapolis; Rockford, Illinois, near Chicago; and Phoenix.

"We're looking at cities with big populations of professional workers, many of whom have the ability to pick up and go and work somewhere else," he said. "And many families may do it, too, because there are many people out there who feel the pandemic has cheated them out of their vacations."

Another advantage Las Vegas holds is that it is well-wired for internet connectivity.

"A lot of people are dying for a change in scenery," DeAngelo said, "and some of them are getting away to the mountains but find out their cellphone service or internet aren't as reliable. That isn't a problem here."

While Allegiant is often criticized for not having much flexibility in its booking process, the company is expecting travelers to flock to the value proposition offered by a flight-hotel package. Among the deals available on the Allegiant website are a package at the Flamingo for three midweek nights from Cincinnati for $227 round trip and four nights at the MGM Grand from Indianapolis for $340.

Will it work? It's probably too early to tell. But it's an outside-the-box idea that may help some tide over the business customer until conventions come back.

A Las Vegas man who was investigated by the US Justice Department for four months after discussing plans to carry out a terrorist attack on a synagogue has been arrested and is facing federal weapons charges, the Justice Department reported Friday.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Conor Climo, 23, became the target of a Justice Department terrorism task force investigation after he reached out to a white supremacist group.

Three years ago, Climo was featured on a TV news report, carrying an assault rifle and four magazines. The weapon appeared in a 2017 social media post in which Climo quoted Adolf Hitler.

According to the criminal complaint, Climo corresponded online with an FBI informant. During their discussions, he made racist, anti-Semitic, and anti-LGBTQ remarks. He also discussed plans to attack a synagogue in Las Vegas, as well as the local chapter of the Anti-Defamation League. Climo also told the informant he planned to make Molotov cocktails and explosive devices.

Climo has been charged with one count of possession of an unregistered firearm, which the Justice Department described in a press release as a component of "a destructive device."

US Attorney for Nevada Nicholas Trutanich said in the Justice Department press release that "threats of violence motivated by hate and intended to intimidate or coerce our faith-based and LGBTQ communities have no place in this country."

Trutanich added that Nevada law enforcement was determined to employ every investigative resource at its disposal to "prevent bias-motivated violence before it happens."

Businessman and philanthropist Sheldon Adelson received an honorary doctorate from the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya on Thursday in the first such ceremony at the Israeli university.

Professor Ariel Reichman, the president and founder of the institution, praised Adelson in a statement issued just before the event, calling him "a dear friend and true partner of IDC Herzliya" and said that his prolific and important activity in an abundance of fields made him "one of the most influential Jewish personalities in the world, due both to his thriving hotel and media businesses and to his enormous contributions and advocacy for Jewish life and the State of Israel."

According to Reichman, the decision to confer the degree on Adelson stemmed from a desire to express gratitude to Adelson, who has become "an inspiration and a model of the power of one individual's entrepreneurial determination and strength, of the ability to overcome difficulties and failures while exercising creativity, and of personal courage and rare ability."

Reichman added that "it is all of these things that make him one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our generation." He noted that the decision to grant Adelson this unique honor for the first time in the university's 25-year history was made "in appreciation of his life's work, his love, loyalty and contributions to the State of Israel, and his friendship and support of IDC Herzliya."

During the speech at the event on Thursday, Reichman said he said Adelson was "one of the world's legendary entrepreneurs." He went on to say that "many people have marveled at the projects that he built: He built 'Venice' with gondolas and waterways in Las Vegas; he built in Singapore – what became a national landmark and symbol; but few people have the privilege to see up close the creativity and innovation, his resolve and ability to overcome challenges. Watching Sheldon going through his challenges and successes inspired me in my journey to build the IDC."

In his statement before the ceremony, Reichman said that both Adelson and his wife, Israel Hayom Publisher Dr. Miriam Adelson, have "always stood by IDC Herzliya, even in difficult times," recalling that "in 2013, the Adelson School of Entrepreneurship was established [at IDC] – the first of its kind in Israel and the world."

Later, at the event itself, he continued praising the couple.

"The Adelsons' creativity has not been limited to business, many of their contributions to Israel and the Jewish people are truly life-changing, and their direct support has enabled 150,000 young Jews to take part in the Birthright experience that has left a lasting impact on them and rekindled their connection to their Jewish roots. And by establishing the Israeli American Council, they created a powerful organization of hundreds of thousands of ex-Israelis whose goals include supporting Israel, maintaining Israeli culture and reducing assimilation. Their generosity is also witnessed in many other projects spread all over Israel and the United States."

He added, that "when the story of Israel will be told in the future it will undoubtedly portray them as prominent figures in the country's history."

The Adelsons are strong supporters of numerous educational and Jewish identity programs in Israel as well as in the United States. One such program, Taglit-Birthright Israel, offers young Jews a free 10-day tour of Israel.

The couple opened their first drug abuse clinic in Tel Aviv in 1993. ‎Miriam Adelson helped develop a methadone program for teen ‎addicts and has co-authored numerous research papers on ‎methadone treatment‏‏. In 2000, the Adelsons opened the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. ‎Adelson Clinic for Drug Abuse Treatment and Research in Las ‎Vegas, Nevada to help treat painkiller and opioid addiction.‎

Since 2007, the couple has donated over $100 million to Birthright Israel, tens of millions of dollars to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, and to the establishment of the Adelson School of Medicine at Ariel University in Samaria.

In 2018, US President Donald Trump honored ‎‎Dr. Adelson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom‎. Adelson was recognized for her work as a philanthropist and ‎humanitarian, and as a doctor specializing in the treatment of ‎narcotic addiction, the White House said‏ at the time. ‏

Various other business leaders were also among the recipients of an honorary degree at Thursday's ceremony, as well as Lt. Gen. (res.) Gadi Eizenkot.

Eizenkot was honored for his contribution to Israel's security and for preserving the values of the Israel Defense Forces when he was chief of the General Staff between 2015 and 2019.

The Adelson family owns the company that is the primary shareholder in Israel Hayom.

A nonstop flight between Israel and Las Vegas will launch next month.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Wednesday that El Al Israel Airlines will operate a flight between Ben-Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv and McCarran International Airport starting on June 14.

The 14-hour flight to Las Vegas will depart from Tel Aviv on Friday mornings. The flight back to Israel will leave Las Vegas on Saturday nights.

The airline's vice president of commercial and industry affairs, Michael Strassburger, said that Las Vegas has become a popular destination for Israelis so the airline added the flight to meet demand.

The airline currently has nonstop service to seven North American destinations: Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark, San Francisco and Toronto. In February, the airline announced that it would begin service to Orlando later this year.

El Al recorded 5.6 million passengers last year.
