Britain's Prince Harry, his wife Meghan, and her mother were involved in a "near catastrophic" car chase with press photographers after attending an awards ceremony in New York, Harry's spokesperson said on Wednesday. The incident involved "a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi" in half a dozen cars with blacked-out windows, driving dangerously and putting the lives of the couple and Doria Ragland in danger, the spokesperson said. "This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians, and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers," the spokesperson said in a statement.

Pictures on social media show Harry, Meghan, and her mother sitting in the back of a New York taxi which their spokesperson said showed "a small glimpse at the defense and decoys required to end the harassment". Media reported the couple had switched to the taxi to try and shake off the photographers after the car they left the Ziegfeld Ballroom in midtown Manhattan in was pursued.

The couple's spokesperson said the chase on Tuesday could also have been fatal and involved paparazzi driving on the sidewalk, running red lights, and driving while taking pictures. Those involved were confronted by police officers multiple times, according to the spokesperson.

The couple, who live in California with their two young children, had been staying at a private residence but decided against returning there as they did not wish to compromise their host's safety, according to their spokesperson.

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, vented their grievances against the British monarchy on Thursday in the second half of their Netflix documentary series, with Harry describing the royal press machine – including leaking and planting stories in newspapers – as a "dirty game."

Harry, 38, also said there was a "wedge" created between himself and his older brother and heir to the throne, Prince William, around the time Harry and Meghan decided to step away from royal duties and move away from the UK to start a new life.

He cited the example of a joint statement palace officials issued on behalf of him and William to "squash" a story about William bullying the couple out of the family. He said it was issued without his consent.

"I couldn't believe it. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that," Harry told the Netflix series. "They were happy to lie to protect my brother and yet for three years, they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as Harry and Meghan are officially known, stepped down from royal duties in March 2020, saying they wanted to forge new lives in the United States away from media harassment, which the couple said had threatened to destroy their mental health.

He recounted details of a crisis summit held at the Sandringham estate two months earlier he attended along with the late Queen Elizabeth, Charles, and William.

"It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me, and my father say things that just simply weren't true, and my grandmother quietly sit there and sort of take it all in," he said.

Elsewhere in the series, Meghan and Harry both reiterated their complaints that British royal officials did not help them by rejecting inaccurate, negative reports about them.

"What clicked in my head was, 'It's never going to stop,'" Meghan said. "Every rumor, every negative thing, every lie and everything I knew wasn't true, and that the palace knew wasn't true and internally they knew wasn't true, was being allowed to fester."

Harry added: "There was no other option at this point. I said that we need to get out of here."

Meghan's lawyer, Jenny Afia, claimed in the series that she has seen evidence of "negative briefing from the palace" against the couple "to suit other people's agendas." She did not elaborate what evidence she saw.

Palace officials have not commented on the series.

The first three installments of "Harry & Meghan," released last week, focused on the British media's coverage of the couple and the way it was influenced by racism.

The new episodes come at a crucial moment for the monarchy as King Charles III tries to show that the institution remains alive and vibrant after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, whose personal popularity damped criticism of the crown during her 70-year reign. Charles is making the case that the House of Windsor can help unite an increasingly diverse nation by personally meeting with representatives of the ethnic groups and faiths that make up modern Britain — trying to show that whatever the allegations against him, the reality is different.

Harry's 2018 marriage to the former Meghan Markle, a biracial American actress, was once seen as a public relations coup for the royal family, boosting the monarchy's effort to move into the 21st century by making it more representative of a multicultural nation. But the fairy tale, punctuated with a horse-drawn carriage ride and lavish wedding at Windsor Castle, soon unraveled amid relentless media attention, including allegations that Meghan was self-centered and bullied her staff.

"I wasn't being thrown to the wolves, I was being fed to the wolves," Meghan said.

The series is Harry and Meghan's latest effort to tell their own story after the couple stepped back from royal life in early 2020 and moved to the wealthy Southern California enclave of Montecito. Their life on an estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean has been partly funded by lucrative contracts with Netflix and Spotify.

Race became a central issue for the monarchy following Harry and Meghan's interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. Meghan alleged that before their first child was born, a member of the royal family commented on how dark the baby's skin might be.

Prince William defended the royal family after the interview, telling reporters, "We're very much not a racist family."

Buckingham Palace faced renewed allegations of racism earlier this month when a Black advocate for survivors of domestic abuse said a senior member of the royal household interrogated her about her origins during a reception at the palace. Coverage of the issue filled British media, overshadowing William and his wife Kate's much-anticipated visit to Boston, which the palace had hoped would highlight their environmental credentials.

The Netflix series is problematic for the palace because Harry and Meghan are appealing to the same younger, more culturally diverse demographic that William and Kate are trying to win over, said Pauline Maclaran, author of "Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture."

"I think, it has to be worrying for the royal family in terms of their future, because they really need to get this young generation on their side, to an extent, if they're going to survive,'' she said. "They will have to make a very big effort to make themselves appear more diverse, and I think we do see that happening a little bit, but not enough."

Markle opened up about suicidal thoughts during her time as a working royal in episode four of the couple's Netflix series, saying that she believed "all of this will stop if I'm not here." She added, "And that was the scariest thing about it – it was such clear thinking."

"I remember her telling me that," Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, was quoted in the episode. "That she wanted to take her own life. And that really broke my heart. Because I knew – well I knew that it was bad. But to just constantly be picked at by these vultures – just picking away at her spirit – that she would actually think of not wanting to be here.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex and wife of Britain's Prince Harry, gave birth to a boy on Monday, Harry announced.

The baby, seventh-in-line to the British throne, "is absolutely to die for," the prince told reporters.

In a formal announcement on their official Instagram account, the royal couple said they "welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses' son weighs 7lbs. 3oz (3.2 kg)."

"The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thanks members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives. More details will be shared in the forthcoming days."

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin congratulated the couple on Twitter: "Warmest #congratulations to HRH Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of your son. Harry and Meghan, on behalf of the people of #Israel, Nechama and I send you a big hug and our best wishes. Mazal Tov! #royalbaby"

Queen Elizabeth's grandson Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, a U.S.-born former actress, married in a lavish ceremony at the monarch's Windsor Castle home in May last year.

The baby will be the eighth great-grandchild of the 93-year-old queen, the world's longest-reigning monarch, and could be entitled to hold joint British and American citizenship according to nationality rules.

However, the child will not automatically be a prince or a princess as any such title will have to be bestowed by the queen by issuing what is known as a letter patent.

The parents are officially titled the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Britain's royal family attracts huge media interest but the younger members, especially Harry and Meghan, are treated like Hollywood superstars.
