An Algerian citizen employed as a caregiver in a Jewish family's home will stand trial on Tuesday in France on charges of poisoning the family on antisemitic grounds, according to a report by Le Parisien. The caregiver allegedly poured toxic cleaning products into food and drinks consumed by the family – parents and three young children from the Paris suburbs – for several weeks.

The case came to light in late January 2024 when the mother tasted cleaning products in the wine she was drinking. The evening before filing a police complaint, minutes after the caregiver left the house, she noticed foam on a bottle of grape juice and smelled bleach in the wine. Police seized cleaning products from the home, including a cleaning spray and a toilet cleaner containing bleach.

The five-year-old daughter told her mother she saw the caregiver transfer soapy liquid into an alcohol bottle labeled "Jerusalem."

Laboratory tests revealed chemical traces in wine stored at the home, in whisky, in grape juice, and even in pasta. According to the indictment, these are "harmful and even corrosive substances that could cause serious injury to the digestive system."

The caregiver, identified as Laila Y., 42, was arrested in early February 2024. She initially denied the allegations, but during a search of her home, she told officers, "Because they have money and power, I should never have worked for a Jew, she only brought me problems."

During interrogation, she confessed to pouring soap into the food as "punishment" and a "warning" following arguments about her wages. "I was angry, they didn't respect me," she said. "I knew this might cause them pain, but not enough to kill them."

Her defense attorney claimed she retracted her confession and denies the antisemitic motive. According to the lawyer, the real motive was jealousy. "What was said relates to a class issue and financial resentment," the attorney argued.

According to the report, searches on the caregiver's phone included inquiries about the family's identity, about "barbaric Jews" and about Jewish religious customs. Her Facebook account contained posts related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The children testified that the caregiver asked them questions about religion, and the younger daughter said she saw her repeatedly strike the mezuzahs in the house.

The family's attorneys view the acts as antisemitic crimes, and Jonathan Arfi, chairman of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF), has been invited to testify at the trial. Arfi said the affair "exposes structural violence that must not be downplayed or ignored."

The caregiver, who has been in custody since February 2024, was in France illegally and forged a Belgian identity document to obtain employment.

Tiphaine Auzière, daughter of French President Emmanuel Macron's wife Brigitte Macron, testified Tuesday that her mother was forced to "think carefully" about how she dressed or stood because of conspiracy theories claiming she was born male. The trial against 10 people who spread the claims began this week in Paris, while the Macrons simultaneously filed a defamation lawsuit in the US against far-right podcast host Candace Owens, who spread similar claims.

Prosecutors in Paris demanded sentences of up to one year suspended prison and fines of up to 8,000 euros ($8,976) for ten defendants charged with online sexual harassment of the first lady.

Auzière, 41, testified in court that the unfounded claims about her mother's gender caused a "deterioration" in her health. "She has to constantly pay attention to what she wears, how she stands, because she knows her image might be distorted," Auzière said. Auzière added that Brigitte's grandchildren suffer harassment at school because of this.

Auzière testified that "it's important for her to be here to present the damage caused" to her mother, adding that she "wants to tell what her life has become from the moment these attacks began." Auzière said her mother "wasn't elected and didn't ask for this, and found herself under attack."

Claims that Brigitte Macron was born male have circulated since her husband's election to the presidency in 2017, mainly by far-right circles and conspiracy theory supporters in France and the US. The first lady filed a complaint in August 2024 that led to an investigation and arrests in December 2024 and February 2025.

Ten defendants – eight men and two women, ages 41 to 60 – will be tried in a Paris criminal court, charged with sexually harassing Brigitte Macron. Two additional defendants, residents of Corsica, are charged not only with online harassment but also with exploiting a loophole in the French tax system to change Brigitte's name to a male name as part of the effort to spread the conspiracy theory.

Parallel to the Paris trial, the Macrons filed a defamation lawsuit in the US in July against Candace Owens, a far-right podcast host known for spreading wild conspiracies and anti-Israel propaganda. Owens produced a series called "Becoming Brigitte" and, in March 2024, said she was willing to bet "all her professional credibility" that Brigitte Macron was born male.

According to the Macrons' American attorney, they plan to present photographic and "scientific" evidence in court proving the first lady is a woman.

One man was apprehended at Charles de Gaulle Airport attempting to board a flight to Algeria, while the second was preparing to depart for Mali. The "seasoned burglars" are now in custody as investigators continue searching for two additional suspects in the seven-minute heist that netted eight pieces of Napoleonic crown jewels.

Authorities in France have detained two men in connection with the Louvre Museum robbery that resulted in the theft of eight priceless crown jewels. DNA traces discovered at the museum enabled investigators to identify the suspects, both aged in their 30s and originating from Seine-Saint-Denis, a Paris suburb, The Telegraph reported. The stolen jewelry remains unrecovered.

Authorities apprehended one suspect Saturday night at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport as he attempted to board an outbound flight in the aftermath of last week's heist, which lasted seven minutes. Le Parisien reported the suspect was intercepted while trying to board an Algeria-bound flight, while the second man was making preparations to depart for Mali, according to Le Figaro.

The men are believed to be members of the masked burglar gang that penetrated the Louvre museum last Sunday before making off with jewellery valued at £76 million. Already familiar to law enforcement, the suspects were characterized as "seasoned burglars" by police, The Telegraph reported. The Banditry Repression Brigade in Paris's 17th arrondissement now holds them in custody for interrogation.

Investigators continue pursuing the remaining two suspects while examining whether a conventional crime organization or an art trafficking network orchestrated the theft, The Telegraph reported.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau criticized the initial reports in a letter to Le Figaro, which disseminated confidential information about the apprehensions, according to The Telegraph. "I deeply deplore the hasty disclosure of this information by informed persons, without consideration for the investigation. This revelation can only harm the investigative efforts of the hundred or so investigators involved in the search for both the stolen jewels and all the criminals. It is too early to provide any details."

However, France's interior minister expressed his "warmest congratulations" to the investigators on X regarding the recent developments, stating they had been working tirelessly on the case, The Telegraph reported.

Law enforcement successfully retrieved 150 DNA samples from the array of items the group abandoned, including a scooter helmet, a blowtorch, a walkie-talkie, a yellow vest, and a blanket, The Telegraph reported. "More than 150 samples of DNA, papillary and other traces were taken," Beccuau stated Friday, according to The Telegraph. "The analyses require time limits, even if they are a priority for the labs. We are expecting feedback in the coming days, which may be able to provide us with leads, especially if the perpetrators were on file."

Beccuau additionally verified that law enforcement utilized CCTV to track the gang's movements on two Yamaha TMax scooters, stating that video surveillance from public and private cameras "made it possible to follow their route in Paris and in neighbouring departments," The Telegraph reported.

Sunday saw Nuñez dismiss a proposal to establish a police station within the Louvre following requests from the museum's director, The Telegraph reported. "I'm against it. If we start with the Louvre, we'll put them everywhere," Nuñez stated in an interview with La Tribune Dimanche, a weekly newspaper, The Telegraph reported. "The current police station is right next to the Louvre. As soon as there was an alert, the police were there within three minutes." A police station located in the museum "would not have changed anything," Nuñez asserted, emphasizing that the tourist-saturated area represents the most heavily policed section of Paris, The Telegraph reported.

On Friday, a portion of the museum's remaining jewelry collection was transferred to the Bank of France, the national central bank of France, under police escort, The Telegraph reported. The collection now resides in a vault buried 85 feet (26 meters) underground, which additionally houses France's gold reserves and other national treasures, including Leonardo da Vinci's Notebooks valued at an estimated €600 million ($680 million), Le Figaro noted, according to The Telegraph.

Auction house experts in Paris have revealed a previously hidden Pablo Picasso masterpiece depicting Dora Maar that disappeared from public view 80 years ago, with the wartime painting now set to command millions at an October sale that promises to reshape understanding of the artist's most turbulent romantic period, The Guardian reported.

The artwork, titled "Bust of a Woman in a Flowery Hat (Dora Maar)," was completed near the conclusion of the pair's stormy nine-year romance and depicts Maar with gentler, more vibrant tones compared to earlier portraits Picasso created of his lover.

The newly revealed painting shows Maar's fragmented visage rendered in brilliant colors without traditional perspective, appearing distressed and near tears, created during the period when Maar discovered that 61-year-old Picasso planned to abandon her for 21-year-old artist Françoise Gilot.

The completion of the portrait occurred in July 1943, with limited exhibitions held beyond his Paris studio on Rue des Grands Augustins. It remained in private ownership since its purchase in August 1944, during Paris' liberation month.

Nazi forces controlling Paris during World War II classified Picasso's creations as "degenerate," resulting in studio raids and exhibition ban threats against his artistic output.

Documentation of its existence came through a black-and-white photograph captured before the sale and included in an art publication, while the current seller, who inherited the work from an unnamed French collector grandparent, has chosen anonymity.

Numerous paintings of Maar were created by Picasso, including his renowned "Portrait of Dora Maar" and "Dora Maar au Chat," though she commented about these works: "All of his portraits of me are lies. They're all Picassos. Not one is Dora Maar."

Their initial meeting occurred in late 1935 while she captured promotional photographs for Jean Renoir's movie "The Crime of Monsieur Lange," during which period Picasso maintained his existing relationship with Marie-Thérèse Walter, mother of his daughter Maya, throughout his involvement with Maar.

Maar's masochistic nature captivated Picasso, leading him to frequently portray her as a suffering individual, typically weeping, as seen in "La Femme qui pleure" (Weeping Woman), which art historians believe he created to symbolize Spanish civil war anguish while also reflecting his reported mistreatment of Maar and their violent confrontations.

Maar, who passed away in Paris in 1997 at the age of 89, earned recognition as both Picasso's inspiration and model, beyond their romantic connection, establishing herself as an accomplished surrealist photographer whose techniques significantly influenced his artistic development throughout their partnership.

Lucien Paris auction house has conservatively appraised the 80cm x 60cm oil painting at approximately €8 million ($6.9 million), while anticipating substantially higher final bids. The auction house maintained secrecy about the artwork's existence until Thursday's media presentation.

Auctioneer Christophe Lucien described the find as monumentally significant, characterizing the piece as a masterpiece and an exceptional demonstration of how Picasso's creativity provided essential illumination during the occupation's darkness, noting that while experts knew of its existence through photographs, the work's true colors remained unseen until now.

"It is not only a milestone in the history of art but also in the private life of Picasso," Lucien stated, adding, "It is a refreshing portrait of Dora Maar; exceptional and full of emotion. Discovering it is a big moment in our lives as experts."

The painting will be auctioned by Lucien Paris on October 24, with public display scheduled for three days preceding the sale.

Less than a week after an antisemitic incident at El Al's Paris offices, an air traffic controller at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris told El Al pilots "Free Palestine" over the radio, 12 minutes after takeoff.

El Al responded: "El Al views the incident that took place last night, in which a French air traffic controller addressed one of its pilots in an unprofessional and inappropriate manner, with the utmost seriousness. We are addressing the matter with Israeli authorities, who are in contact with their French counterparts."

"El Al will continue flying around the world with the Israeli flag on its aircraft tails with pride, while upholding professionalism and ensuring the safety and security of its passengers and crews,", the airline added.

The incident follows another antisemitic attack in Paris last week, when a disturbing scene was discovered outside the Israeli airline's offices: the office sign had been vandalized with hate-filled graffiti, including the phrase "EL AL GENOCIDE AIRLINE," red paint had been splashed on the walls and door, and pro-Palestinian graffiti had been sprayed on the wall. The employees had not yet arrived at the office at the time.

Antisemitic vandals struck El Al's Paris offices in a shocking incident discovered Thursday morning outside the Israeli airline's headquarters – the office signage was defaced with offensive graffiti reading "El Al Genocide Airline," red paint was splattered across exterior walls and entrance doors, and anti-Israel messages were spray-painted on building surfaces. Staff members had not yet reached the workplace when the vandalism was uncovered.

El Al representatives declared, "This serious incident came to light this morning and took place while the building remained unoccupied, posing no immediate threat to our workforce. El Al regards this matter with utmost seriousness and is collaborating with relevant authorities according to protocols established by competent agencies in France and Israel. El Al displays Israel's national flag on our aircraft tails with pride and denounces all forms of violence, especially acts motivated by antisemitic hatred."

Israeli Transportation Minister Miri Regev wrote on her X platform, "Today it targets El Al, tomorrow it will be Air France. When French President Macron issues declarations that benefit Hamas, these are the consequences. I condemn this barbaric and violent action against El Al and expect French law enforcement officials to identify these perpetrators and pursue decisive measures against them."

A laser projector from a building on Rivoli Street displayed the provocative message on the balloon "Stop Génocide à Gaza" ("Stop the genocide in Gaza"). The projection took place around 10:30 p.m., witnessed by spectators and official guests who were surprised by the blatant political display. According to the organization, the projection aimed to "remind of the fate of the civilian population in Gaza."

Anne Savinel-Barras, president of Amnesty International in France, said in a media statement that "we can no longer stand by" and accused Israel of violating international law. She even claimed that "Israel uses hunger as a weapon of war."

Anti-Israeli organizations and hostile leaders such as Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continue to accuse Israel of genocide – accusations that the State of Israel completely rejects, noting that this is a coordinated campaign designed to blacken its image and break its legitimacy for self-defense.

The operation in Gaza has continued for more than 21 months, following the murderous terror attack carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023, in which 1,219 Israelis were killed – most of them civilians, women, children, and elderly – and 251 civilians and soldiers were kidnapped to the Strip.

Paris Saint-Germain's resounding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Munich triggered widespread celebrations across France, but the festivities spiraled into violence, leaving two dead and nearly 560 people detained, with Israeli politicians taking advantage of the situation to slam France over its stand in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The French capital, gripped by both euphoria and unrest, saw clashes between fans and police, with authorities deploying tear gas and water cannons to quell the chaos.

The night of May 31, 2025, marked a historic moment for PSG, as they secured their first-ever Champions League title in a dominant performance at Munich's Allianz Arena, Sky News noted. Flares and fireworks illuminated Paris as supporters celebrated the monumental win. However, the jubilation quickly escalated into disorder near the Parc des Princes stadium and along the iconic Champs Élysées. French police, numbering 5,400 across the city, faced significant challenges as crowds turned violent.

According to Sky News, the unrest intensified at the Place de l'Étoile, near the Arc de Triomphe, where a water cannon was deployed to protect the area. A large group, reportedly not focused on the match, attempted to breach police barriers, sparking confrontations. Among the 131 arrests made in Paris, 30 individuals were detained for looting a shoe shop on the Champs Élysées, highlighting the scale of the disorder.

The French interior ministry confirmed the tragic loss of two lives during the disturbances, though specific details about the fatalities remain limited, Sky News stated. Across France, the arrest tally reached 559, reflecting the widespread nature of the unrest. Authorities used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse crowds, particularly as some set vehicles ablaze and blocked streets, further fueling the chaos.

Despite the violence, PSG's triumph was a landmark achievement, with young star Désiré Doué scoring twice in the final, Sky News reported. The club's victory, described as the most decisive in Champions League final history, fulfilled a long-standing ambition for the Parisian side. However, the night's celebrations were marred by the destructive actions of some, casting a shadow over the historic win.

Meanwhile, Knesset member Ohad Tal sarcastically called for the establishment of "Paristine" in the French Riviera, expressing concern over recent riots. "It's time to recognize the rights of the Muslim minority in France and establish the state of Paristine in the French Riviera!" Tal quipped, referencing violent unrest in Paris following a Champions League victory. He echoed a similar suggestion made by US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who slammed President Emmanuel Macron for convening a conference in France to establish a Palestinian state.

The chaos in Paris was also marked by antisemitic vandalism, including the defacement of two synagogues, and the attack on a local Holocaust memorial. Yuli Edelstein, chairman of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, condemned the riots as "not just a slap in the face to France, but a glaring warning sign of a future of chaos and lack of control." He lamented that instead of celebrating a sporting achievement, certain communities "extinguished the light in the City of Light."

Knesset member Eliyahu Revivo also weighed in, suggesting that the violent night in Paris served as a "preview" of the Palestinian state France seeks to establish. His remarks underscored a broader Israeli critique of France's foreign policy, particularly in light of recent antisemitic incidents and public disorder in the French capital.

"The attacks on synagogues and a Holocaust memorial in Paris are a direct result of the rampant incitement against Jews in France," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on X. "President Macron should stop pushing for a Palestinian terror state in the heart of the Jewish homeland and start acting against antisemitism in his own country."

French President Emmanuel Macron provided the public with their first glimpse inside the restored Notre Dame cathedral during a televised tour, marking a triumphant milestone in the historic building's transformation since the devastating 2019 fire.

The BBC reported the cathedral has undergone a complete metamorphosis, from its soaring spire to its luminous stained glass windows. The restoration went beyond mere fire damage repair, addressing decades of accumulated grime since its last renovation.

The reconstruction of the iconic spire, which dramatically collapsed during the fire, stands as a testament to both traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. While many assumed the spire was medieval, the original was actually removed in the 1790s due to safety concerns, according to the BBC. The version that burned in 2019 was part of a neo-Gothic renovation by architect Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc.

Craftsmen utilized a combination of traditional methods and computer-aided design to construct the massive wooden base. Europe's largest crane hoisted the structure into position, followed by the installation of scaffolding that enabled workers to complete the ascending framework. The spire, like the rest of the roof, features lead cladding. A new gilded cock, replacing the fire-damaged original, now crowns the spire. Inside this ornamental rooster lies a collection of holy relics, including a thorn from the cathedral's Crown of Thorns and a parchment bearing the names of 2,000 restoration workers.

The restored cathedral's most striking feature is its radiant stonework, the BBC noted. Every limestone block has been meticulously cleaned or replaced where necessary. Experts sourced replacement stone from northern French quarries, identifying matching materials through minute characteristics such as fossil patterns. Workers cleaned approximately 40,000 square meters of stone using high-power vacuums and specialized peeling sprays to remove centuries of dirt and fire-related debris.

The reconstruction of the wooden roof, spanning 328 feet, required 1,200 carefully selected oak trees from French forests. Each tree needed to meet specific criteria: 43 feet in length, straight, and free from knots and frost-crack damage. Carpenters employed traditional 13th-century techniques, hand-sawing and shaping many beams with axes. The roof now features 35 "fermes" – triangular support structures – running the building's length.

Many exterior sculptures, including Viollet-le-Duc's famous gargoyles and chimeras, required restoration after sustaining damage from firefighting efforts and pollution. A dedicated workshop established in front of the cathedral handled repairs and replacements, with five gargoyles recreated through computer scanning and limestone crafting.

The cathedral's great organ, an 18th-century masterpiece, underwent complete disassembly to address lead monoxide contamination in its 7,952 pipes. The massive instrument, standing 39 feet tall with six keyboards, received new sheep-leather linings and electronic controls during its restoration at workshops outside Paris. The time-consuming retuning process required months of precise adjustments.

A new liturgical layout features a simple bronze altar, 1,500 new wooden chairs, and a specially designed reliquary for the Crown of Thorns. Designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac created new vestments for the clergy.

The restoration project yielded significant archaeological discoveries, including remains believed to be those of Renaissance poet Joachim du Bellay and the buried medieval rood-screen. This 36-foot stone partition, dismantled in the 18th century, contains richly detailed sculptures depicting Christ's life. Despite the successful renovation, work continues on the eastern end, with future plans including the redesign of the esplanade and the creation of a museum in the neighboring Hôtel-Dieu hospital.
