An Algerian citizen employed as a caregiver in a Jewish family's home will stand trial on Tuesday in France on charges of poisoning the family on antisemitic grounds, according to a report by Le Parisien. The caregiver allegedly poured toxic cleaning products into food and drinks consumed by the family – parents and three young children from the Paris suburbs – for several weeks.

The case came to light in late January 2024 when the mother tasted cleaning products in the wine she was drinking. The evening before filing a police complaint, minutes after the caregiver left the house, she noticed foam on a bottle of grape juice and smelled bleach in the wine. Police seized cleaning products from the home, including a cleaning spray and a toilet cleaner containing bleach.

The five-year-old daughter told her mother she saw the caregiver transfer soapy liquid into an alcohol bottle labeled "Jerusalem."

Laboratory tests revealed chemical traces in wine stored at the home, in whisky, in grape juice, and even in pasta. According to the indictment, these are "harmful and even corrosive substances that could cause serious injury to the digestive system."

The caregiver, identified as Laila Y., 42, was arrested in early February 2024. She initially denied the allegations, but during a search of her home, she told officers, "Because they have money and power, I should never have worked for a Jew, she only brought me problems."

During interrogation, she confessed to pouring soap into the food as "punishment" and a "warning" following arguments about her wages. "I was angry, they didn't respect me," she said. "I knew this might cause them pain, but not enough to kill them."

Her defense attorney claimed she retracted her confession and denies the antisemitic motive. According to the lawyer, the real motive was jealousy. "What was said relates to a class issue and financial resentment," the attorney argued.

According to the report, searches on the caregiver's phone included inquiries about the family's identity, about "barbaric Jews" and about Jewish religious customs. Her Facebook account contained posts related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The children testified that the caregiver asked them questions about religion, and the younger daughter said she saw her repeatedly strike the mezuzahs in the house.

The family's attorneys view the acts as antisemitic crimes, and Jonathan Arfi, chairman of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF), has been invited to testify at the trial. Arfi said the affair "exposes structural violence that must not be downplayed or ignored."

The caregiver, who has been in custody since February 2024, was in France illegally and forged a Belgian identity document to obtain employment.

"The damage is indescribable. I've been riding since I was 6 and I've never seen such a horror, " Danielle Erlichman, who was supposed to participate in the contest, said. "People started walking with the horses, but they just lay down, couldn't move, and had diarrhea. We now have four horses that are at risk of dying and many are connected to IVs, with vets working round the clock to look after them."

The poisoning occurred at a horse farm in Ra'anana, central Israel, and over a dozen horses were affected. It is unclear what caused the incident, but Erlichman insisted, "There is no way that this is the work of our competitors. This is a sport built on people who love animals, putting such a deadly poison in order to kill an animal is something that an equestrian would never do."

She lamented missing the championship along with fellow equestrians.

"Ten horses were supposed to participate in the championship. We practiced for a whole year to reach such a high level, and now it's all gone down the drain. Our athletes were supposed to stand on the winning podium.

"An investigation has been launched, was it the fault of the factory that is denying responsibility, or an individual who did it on purpose? I personally do not rule out the possibility of terrorism. It could be any of these options. I am shocked that people can harm animals in such a way," she said.

An Iranian official claimed Monday that Brig. Gen. Muhammad Hussein-Zada Hejazi, deputy commander of Iran's clandestine Quds Force, did not die of a heart attack as Iranian authorities initially claimed on Sunday, rather was poisoned by Israel and the United States with radioactive materials, possibly in Iraq or Syria.

Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida cited an unnamed source reportedly close to Hejazi, as insisting that he was in good health before his last trip to Iraq and Syria in March.

After Hejazi's return to Iran, the Iranian source told Al-Jarida, he faced symptoms "similar to those of COVID-19" but tests confirmed he had not, in fact, contracted the coronavirus.

The source noted that Hejazi's symptoms were so severe about one week ago that he was unable to leave his office at Quds Force headquarters, and that all medical procedures proved futile before a sudden bout of good health enabled him to leave.  His death two days later caught everyone by surprise, the source claimed.

Some military doctors, the source told Al-Jarida, diagnosed Hejazi as possibly having cancer but he died before completing additional tests.

The source went on to say that everyone in Hejazi's circle initially believed he had died from a heart attack or due to health problems associated with exposure to chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq war, but on Monday morning forensic doctors who performed his autopsy "detected radioactive materials in his body," indicating that he was assassinated, possibly through food.

According to the Kuwaiti daily, the materials allegedly discovered in the autopsy were similar to those which Russian President Vladimir Putin has been accused of using against his political opponents.

The source further alleged that the majority of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' high command was in agreement that Israel was behind the incident and possibly used the type of poison associated with Russian assassination attempts so that suspicions would be turned against Moscow.

The IRGC has launched an investigation into the matter and ordered that all commanders who recently traveled abroad undergo testing.

According to several intelligence organizations, Hejazi, who Iranian officials said had suffered from a chronic illness, oversaw the planning of the 1994 terrorist attack on the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85.

Last year, Israeli intelligence officials concluded Hejazi had also been tasked with orchestrating Hezbollah's precision missile program in Lebanon. Hejazi was also responsible for the establishment of pro-Iranian militias in Syria, and according to reports in rebel-affiliated media outlets, was seen in the country several times in recent years.

Prior to the assassination of former Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, Hejazi had been responsible for Quds Force logistics. He also took part in the brutal crackdown of the 2009 Iranian presidential election protests that saw demonstrators tortured and murdered.

A central player in the Quds Force, Hejazi's death is a serious blow to the elite organization, which has found it hard to fill the vacuum left by Soleimani's death.
