President Joe Biden and his family gathered at Camp David over the weekend, grappling with the fallout from last week's debate performance against former President Donald J. Trump. Despite growing concerns within the Democratic Party, Biden's family is urging him to stay in the race and continue fighting, according to sources close to the situation who spoke to The New York Times.

The president is now tasked with reassuring anxious Democrats and demonstrating his ability to serve another four years. His son, Hunter Biden, has emerged as one of the strongest voices encouraging the president to resist calls to drop out of the race.

"The entire family is united," said one person familiar with the discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity. "You get up and keep fighting," they added, emphasizing that the president has not considered leaving the race.

While the Biden family remains supportive, some members have privately expressed frustration with the debate preparation process, questioning the strategies employed by key advisers. This sentiment was echoed publicly by John Morgan, a top Democratic donor, who criticized the president's debate team, including Ron Klain, Anita Dunn, and Bob Bauer.

"It would be like if you took a prizefighter who was going to have a title fight and put him in a sauna for 15 hours then said, 'Go fight,'" Morgan told the New York Times, placing blame on the advisers for what he termed "political malpractice."

However, sources close to the president and First Lady Jill Biden maintain that the couple continues to trust their team. Ron Klain, former White House chief of staff, defended the president's position, stating, "He is the choice of the Democratic voters. We are seeing record levels of support from grass-roots donors. We had a bad debate night. But you win campaigns by fighting – not quitting – in the face of adversity."

As the Biden campaign works to calm nerves and reassess strategy, a conference call with the national finance committee is scheduled for Monday. The president's public schedule for the coming week includes visits to an emergency operations center, a Medal of Honor ceremony, and a Fourth of July barbecue for military service members.

Despite the current challenges, Democratic allies continue to publicly support the president. Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia and Governor Wes Moore of Maryland both defended Biden on Sunday talk shows, highlighting his accomplishments and character.

However, a recent CBS News poll revealed that 45% of Democrats want a different candidate to face Trump, and only 27% of overall voters believe Biden has the mental and cognitive health to serve as president.

As the Biden family navigates this crucial period, the president's next moves will be closely watched. Whether through press conferences, interviews, or other public appearances, Biden faces the task of changing the narrative and reaffirming his capability to lead the nation for another term.

President Joe Biden is expected to engage in critical discussions about his re-election campaign with family members at Camp David on Sunday, following a nationally televised debate that has sparked worry among fellow Democrats about his prospects against former President Donald Trump in November, NBC News has reported.

The planned family gathering, which was arranged before Thursday's debate, comes as Biden grapples with the fallout from a performance that left many in his party questioning his viability as a candidate. The president and First Lady Jill Biden are set to join their children and grandchildren at the presidential retreat late Saturday.

While top party leaders, including former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, have publicly expressed support for Biden, sources close to the matter reveal that senior congressional Democrats have privately voiced concerns. Representatives Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, and Nancy Pelosi of California are among those reportedly discussing Biden's electoral chances behind closed doors, even as they maintain public backing for the president.

The debate's aftermath has created a complex political landscape for Democrats. One House member, speaking anonymously to NBC News, claimed that three colleagues shared their belief that Biden should exit the race during floor votes on Friday. However, spokespeople for Pelosi, Jeffries, and Clyburn vehemently denied any wavering in support for the president.

"Speaker Pelosi has full confidence in President Biden and looks forward to attending his inauguration on January 20, 2025," stated Ian Krager, Pelosi's spokesman. Similar sentiments were echoed by representatives for Jeffries and Clyburn, emphasizing their unwavering support for the Biden-Harris ticket.

Despite these assurances, there's a growing consensus among top Democrats that Biden needs space to determine his next steps. Many believe that only the president, in consultation with his family, can decide whether to continue his campaign or step aside.

"The decision-makers are two people – it's the president and his wife," one source familiar with the discussions told NBC News. "Anyone who doesn't understand how deeply personal and familial this decision will be isn't knowledgeable about the situation."

The president's mood following the debate has been described as somber. One person close to Biden characterized him as "humiliated" and "devoid of confidence," acutely aware of the lasting impact of his debate performance and physical appearance.

Anita Dunn, a senior Biden adviser, addressed the situation on MSNBC's "The Weekend," stating that the president has not discussed dropping out with his aides. Instead, she emphasized that internal talks have focused on moving forward. "We had a bad debate," Dunn acknowledged. "What do we do next? You know, the president, above all, is focused on what do we do next? What do I need to go do?"

As Democrats grapple with the implications of Biden's debate showing, the party finds itself divided into three camps: staunch defenders, those ready for a change, and a crucial group waiting to see how Biden proceeds and how polls respond in the coming weeks.

The Biden campaign has sought to reassure party officials, holding a conference call with Democratic National Committee members on Saturday. A campaign official described the effort as a demonstration that Biden's team is actively communicating with allies.

While some Democrats contemplate alternative paths to defeating Trump, including the possibility of a different nominee, Biden himself has reaffirmed his commitment to the race. At a rally in North Carolina on Friday, he declared, "I would not be running again if I didn't believe with all my heart and soul I can do this job."

As the political landscape continues to shift, all eyes remain on President Biden and his family as they convene at Camp David, with the future of the Democratic presidential campaign hanging in the balance.

The presidential campaign of Democratic candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) recently picked an accused anti-Semite – comedian and University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Professor Amer Zahr who has expressed support for the anti-Israel BDS movement – as an official campaigner.

"Does #BDS 'single out' #Israel in the face of other global atrocities? YES! Because it was started by us Palestinians! I don't know why everyone is so shocked that Palestinians are obsessed [sic] with our oppressor. #FreePalestine #Palestine," he tweeted in July, reported The Washington Free Beacon.

In May 2015, Zahr wrote, "Our land was stolen. We live under a brutal military occupation. Israel uses our residential areas to test military technology. Our land was stolen. The media portrays us as subhuman. Israeli politicians call for our extermination. Oh, and our land was stolen."

In February 2016, Zahr published an open letter to superstar singer Beyoncé, condemning her decision to perform in Tel Aviv: "So, Beyoncé, Bey, habibti, I'm asking you not to do it. Israel doesn't wear a halo. She's a naughty girl. She doesn't even pay her own bills, bills, bills."

He added that Israel is a "nation that has routinely discriminated against black individuals, destroying blood donated by Ethiopian Jews, injecting their women with contraceptives without their consent, and expelling thousands of African asylum-seekers."

The following July, Zahr tweeted that then-Democratic presidential candidate and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "should be on the #BDS list. Supporting her is a form of normalization. Voting for her is like buying Sabra hummus. #FreePalestine."

In May 2017, Zahr tweeted, "Zionists say the expulsion [sic] of Palestinians in 1948 AD is justified by a biblical promise in 1948 BC Sounds like Jewish jihad to me."

Zahr has expressed support for Zahra Billoo, who resigned in September from the Women's March board for her history of making anti-Semitic remarks, including applauding Hamas' terrorist attacks against Israel.

"Zahra is a principled civil rights leader, and she is never shy or ashamed to highlight the suffering of the 'Palestinians and the atrocities of the Israeli state,'" tweeted Zahr in September.

Finally, he accused US President Donald Trump of holding "a KKK rally" in July when the president was at an event for his supporters.

The Sanders' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"It's deeply disturbing to find a candidate who claims to be '100% pro-Israel,' opposed to BDS and a fighter against anti-Semitism surrounding himself with a number of surrogates and endorsers who hate Israel, support BDS and have repeatedly made anti-Semitic statements," said Democratic Majority for Israel president and CEO Mark Mellman.

"We privately communicated our concern about some of his choices directly to Sen. Sanders, beginning with his naming of noted anti-Semite Linda Sarsour as an official surrogate. Unfortunately, the only responses we have received from the senator are more hostile choices on his part."

"Unfortunately, this is par for the course for the modern Democrat Party. Democrats are so busy pandering to the anti-Israel, anti-Semitic left-wing progressives that they will throw Jews under the bus," Republican Jewish Coalition spokesperson Neil Strauss told JNS.

"Amer Zahr is unrefutably an anti-Semite. It doesn't matter who he works for or what candidate he supports. It can't change what Mr. Zahr is. For Democrats to not stand up and loudly condemn this is an absolute disgrace," Strauss said.
