Tatiana Schlossberg, 35, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and granddaughter of John F. Kennedy, revealed in an essay that she is battling acute myeloid leukemia, a rare and aggressive blood cancer. The diagnosis came in May 2024, shortly after the birth of her second child. She said, "I did not – could not – believe that they were talking about me… I wasn't sick. I didn't feel sick. I was actually one of the healthiest people I know." She also wrote, "I had a son whom I loved more than anything and a newborn I needed to take care of. This could not possibly be my life," as reported by The New York Times.

Schlossberg's essay – published on the anniversary of her grandfather's assassination – recalls the struggles of coping with the illness, expressing how her parents and siblings "have been raising my children and sitting in my various hospital rooms almost every day," while her doctor "has scoured every inch of the earth for more treatments for me. He knows I don't want to die, and he is trying to stop it." She reflected, "For my whole life, I have tried to be good… Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family's life, and there's nothing I can do to stop it," The New York Times reported.

She went through chemotherapy, a bone-marrow transplant with stem cells from her sister Rose, and joined an immunotherapy trial led by her medical team. Schlossberg credited her husband, George Moran, for his support, saying, "He is perfect, and I feel so cheated and so sad that I don't get to keep living the wonderful life I had with this kind, funny, handsome genius I managed to find," according to The New York Times.

She criticized her cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, calling him "an embarrassment" and expressing worry that his anti-vaccine stance and budget cuts to health research "could leave me to spend the rest of my life immunocompromised." Schlossberg wrote, "Suddenly, the health care system on which I relied felt strained, shaky," as reported by The New York Times.

Despite these frustrations, she wrote of her love for her two young children and the pain of possibly not seeing them grow up. "I remind my son often that I am a writer, so that he will know that I was not just a sick person." She described a moment with her son: "He hugged me, patted me on the back, and said, 'I hear you, buddy, I hear you,'" she wrote.

President Donald Trump's announcement that Coca-Cola will transition to cane sugar could transform the beverage landscape for Jewish consumers, potentially making the iconic soft drink kosher year-round in the US rather than restricting availability to special Passover editions marked with distinctive yellow caps. The switch would eliminate the high-fructose corn syrup that currently renders regular Coca-Cola unsuitable for Passover observance, when Jewish dietary laws prohibit consumption of corn-based products categorized as kitniyot (legumes) by Ashkenazi Jews.

"I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so," Trump declared in a post on his Truth Social platform. "I'd like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You'll see. It's just better!"

The beverage manufacturer responded with a measured statement on its corporate website. "We appreciate President Trump's enthusiasm for our iconic Coca‑Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca‑Cola product range will be shared soon."

Since 1985, high-fructose corn syrup has served as Coca-Cola's principal sweetening agent in American products. The corporation presently employs cane sugar in beverages distributed across various international markets, including Mexico, the United Kingdom, Africa and the Middle East. Additionally, the company produces a restricted quantity of sugar-based Coke in the US as a kosher alternative for Passover – identifiable by yellow caps rather than the standard red ones.

The switch to cane sugar could potentially make Coca-Cola kosher year-round for Jewish consumers in the US. Throughout the year, Jewish organizations such as the Orthodox Union collaborate with companies to verify that food products meet dietary standards outlined in the Torah and Jewish law codes, Business Insider reported. Products meeting these requirements receive kosher certification – meaning fit or proper in Hebrew – with symbols displayed on packaging.

During Passover, Jewish dietary restrictions become more stringent and demand elevated certification levels, Business Insider noted. Many Jews observing Passover abstain from consuming anything classified as "chametz" – leavened foods or items containing leavening ingredients derived from barley, rye, oats, wheat, or spelt. Eastern European Jews of Ashkenazi heritage, comprising approximately 75% of the Jewish population, also avoid "kitniyot," which encompasses legumes and additional grains including corn.

While Coca-Cola maintains kosher certification throughout the year, its high-fructose corn syrup renders it unsuitable for Passover consumption in the US. The beverage originally contained sucrose derived from cane or beet sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup, but when the company made the transition, Coca-Cola products became prohibited during Passover.

In 1935, Rabbi Tuvia Geffen, who led Atlanta's Congregation Shearith Israel for six decades, collaborated with the company to restore a limited production run of the original recipe during Passover periods, enabling observant Jews to continue enjoying the beverage during the holiday, The New York Times reported.

Trump's well-documented affinity for Diet Coke has characterized his relationship with the beverage manufacturer. The president's consumption habits have been extensively chronicled throughout his political career, and at one point a special red button was installed on his desk in the Oval Office to allow him to order Coke from his staff without having to leave the room or call anyone.

Prior to his second-term inauguration ceremony, Trump received a customized Presidential Commemorative Inaugural Diet Coke bottle from Coca-Cola Company Chairman and CEO James Quincey. The special presentation highlighted the ongoing connection between the president and the beverage brand.

Why the change?

Trump did not elaborate on the reasoning behind the modification. Nevertheless, the declaration emerges as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s "Make America Healthy Again" movement builds momentum, advocating for eliminating HFCS from American food manufacturing. The campaign references research connecting HFCS to numerous health complications that contribute to obesity and chronic disease.

Scientific studies present conflicting evidence regarding whether cane sugar provides superior health benefits compared to HFCS, with research indicating that any supplemental sugars, irrespective of source, elevate the risk of Type 2 diabetes and additional ailments. Nutritional specialists recommend restricting added sugar consumption across all categories to fewer than 50 grams daily for most adults. A single 12-ounce Coke container contains approximately 39 grams of sugar.

Coke's switch from sugar to corn syrup

Coca-Cola's 1985 transformation to high-fructose corn syrup within the United States constituted primarily an economic determination, the corporation stated. The modification aligned with escalating sugar costs and agricultural policies that rendered corn syrup a more financially viable option.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been disqualified from appearing on New York's general election ballot due to falsely claiming residency in the state, but remains on the ballot in North Carolina and several other states. However, his ballot access may face legal challenges in some states.

Kennedy's campaign is working to ensure ballot access in several states through legal action. While confirmed on the ballot in 15 states, he may still face legal challenges in states like New Jersey and North Carolina, where he plans to appeal the decision allowing his name on the ballot.

The Democratic Party accused Kennedy's campaign of using the "We the People" party to bypass requirements for independent candidates. However, a judge in North Carolina disagreed and ruled that removing "We the People" from the ballot would infringe on voters' First Amendment rights.

Kennedy claims he will have ballot access in 46 states, representing 329 electoral votes. However, the state board upheld a challenge against independent candidate Cornel West's party, the Justice for All Party.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. admitted to putting a dead bear cub in Central Park, New York City, after it was struck by a vehicle, and staging it with a bicycle to resemble an accident victim. The presidential candidate made the admission in a video posted to social media by the independent presidential candidate.

He said the bear was hit by a car ahead of his vehicle outside the city.

The event took place 10 years ago and triggered a police investigation and media frenzy. According to a BBC report, Kennedy's post came ahead of an expected New Yorker Magazine story.

Kennedy's presidential campaign as an independent candidate faced controversies and declining support. Recent polls show his support is in the single digits, despite previously reaching up to 15%.

His past comments were scrutinized, including a comparison of COVID-vaccine protocols to fascism and having. Kennedy's anti-vaccine organization's accounts were shut down by Facebook and Instagram for spreading misinformation.

Kennedy's campaign received financial support from Republican backers, but his family largely disapproved, considering it dangerous and a misuse of their legacy. His polling numbers showed strength among young and Latino voters in battleground states.

Campaign events focused on redefining important issues and avoiding direct discussions on vaccines, making euphemisms instead. His campaign released a video with Woody Harrelson's voice-over to redefine his public image.

Kennedy experienced challenges related to addiction, drugs, and relationship issues, including divorce and remarriage. He has been outspoken on the dangers of mercury contamination in nature. His recent behavior has been described as erratic and unpredictable by former friends.

He texted an apology to a woman who accused him of sexual assault in the 1990s, expressing regret and asking for forgiveness.

The candidate denied other claims that he barbecued and ate a dog.

Kennedy's campaign is selling a "Kennedy Sanahan 2024" teddy bear for $32, described as a perfect gift for supporters of all ages.

Independent US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has disclosed in a video posted online Sunday that he dumped a dead bear in New York City's Central Park about a decade ago, staging it to appear as if it had been hit by a bicycle.

Kennedy shared the story on social media platform X, seemingly in anticipation of an upcoming article from The New Yorker. "Looking forward to seeing how you spin this one, @NewYorker," Kennedy posted alongside a video of himself discussing the incident with comedian Roseanne Barr.

In the video, Kennedy recounted driving to the Hudson Valley when he witnessed a woman in a van hit and kill a young bear. He claimed he intended to skin the bear and store its meat at his home. However, after a late dinner at Peter Luger Steak House in New York City, he needed to go directly to the airport and didn't want to leave the bear in his vehicle.

"I had an old bike in my car that somebody asked me to get rid of. I said, 'Let's go put the bear in Central Park and we'll make it look like he got hit by a bike,'" Kennedy said, laughing and adding that he thought it would be "amusing" for whoever found it.

This revelation appears to be connected to an October 2014 incident where the body of a black bear cub was discovered in Central Park bushes, prompting a police investigation. Reuters reported at the time that foul play was suspected, though state wildlife officials later concluded the animal was likely struck and killed by a vehicle.

Kennedy stated in the video that The New Yorker had inquired about the incident and was planning a "big article" about him.

As Kennedy continues his independent presidential campaign, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed him favored by 8% of voters. However, he has yet to qualify for the ballot in many states ahead of the November 5 election.

A report by Vanity Fair has unveiled a troubling incident involving Robert F. Kennedy Jr., shedding light on a controversial photograph that has raised questions about cultural sensitivity and animal welfare. The image, which dates back to 2010, shows Kennedy posing with what appears to be the barbecued remains of a dog, alongside an unidentified woman.

According to Vanity Fair, Kennedy shared this photograph with a friend who was planning a trip to Asia, suggesting that the friend might enjoy a restaurant in Korea that served dog meat. The implication was that Kennedy himself had sampled such cuisine.

The photo's metadata confirms it was taken in 2010, coinciding with Kennedy's diagnosis of a deceased tapeworm in his brain. A veterinarian who examined the image identified the carcass as canine, citing the presence of 13 pairs of ribs, including the characteristic "floating rib" found in dogs.

While the photograph seems to have been intended as a joke – with Kennedy and his companion striking exaggerated poses biting into the barbequed animal – its reception has been far from humorous. The friend who received the image found it deeply disturbing, viewing it as evidence of Kennedy's poor judgment and insensitivity.

Critics argue that the photo simultaneously mocks Korean culture, trivializes animal cruelty, and demonstrates a reckless disregard for Kennedy's personal and family reputation.

In response to these allegations, Kennedy claimed on the Breaking Points podcast that the image depicted him eating a goat.

"The picture that they said is of me eating a dog, it's actually me eating a goat in Patagonia on a whitewater trip many years ago on the Futaleufu River", Kennedy said.

Anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made "deeply offensive" comments when he suggested things are worse for people today than they were for Anne Frank, the teenager who died in a Nazi concentration camp after hiding with her family in a secret annex in an Amsterdam house for two years, several Jewish advocacy and Holocaust remembrance groups said Monday.

"Making reckless comparisons to the Holocaust, the murder of six million Jews, for a political agenda is outrageous and deeply offensive. Those who carelessly invoke Anne Frank, the star badge, and the Nuremberg Trials exploit history and the consequences of hate," the US Holocaust Memorial Museum said Monday in a statement posted to Twitter.

A spokesman said the museum made the statement in response to Kennedy's speech and other recent incidents of people invoking the Holocaust for political purposes. The museum also pointed out that Anne Frank was one of the 1.5 million children who died during the Holocaust.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, wrote on Twitter that Kennedy invoking Anne Frank's memory and the mass murder of Jews by the Nazis to make a comparison with the US government "working to ensure the health of its citizens is deeply inaccurate, deeply offensive and deeply troubling. This must stop."

Among the others condemning the comment was Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, in Jerusalem, which said it "denigrates the memory of its victims and survivors."

During a Sunday rally in Washington organized by his anti-vaccine nonprofit group Children's Health Defense, Kennedy complained that people's rights were being violated by public health measures that had been taken to reduce the number of people sickened and killed by COVID-19. He said the nation's leading infectious disease doctor, Anthony Fauci, was orchestrating "fascism."

"Even in Hitler's Germany, you could cross the Alps to Switzerland. You could hide in an attic like Anne Frank did," said Kennedy, a nephew of President John F. Kennedy and the son of his slain brother, former US attorney general, civil rights activist and Democratic presidential contender Robert F. Kennedy.

Kennedy Jr. went on to say that today, "the mechanisms are being put in place that will make it so none of us can run and none of us can hide," and complained about 5G, the newest generation of wireless communication networks, and about vaccine passports.

An Associated Press investigation published last month detailed how Kennedy has invoked the specter of Nazis and the Holocaust in his work to sow doubts about vaccines and agitate against public health efforts to bring the pandemic under control, such as requiring masks or vaccine mandates.

In a speech to the Ron Paul Institute in October, for example, Kennedy referenced Nazis multiple times, obliquely comparing public health measures put in place by governments around the world to Nazi propaganda meant to scare people into abandoning critical thinking. Last month, he put out a video that showed a picture of Fauci with a Hitler mustache.

In an email sent by a spokeswoman on Monday, Kennedy described his statement as "a factual observation that technology has given an arsenal of frightening instrumentalities to totalitarian elements."

"I referred to Anne Frank's terrible two-year ordeal only by way of showing that modern surveillance capacity would make her courageous feat virtually impossible today," he said.

Kennedy said he "compared no one to the Nazis or Adolf Hitler," but did not immediately address other instances when he has invoked Nazis and Hitler to make a political point.

Kennedy apologized in 2015, after he used the word "holocaust" to describe children whom he believes were hurt by vaccines. He said at the time that he "employed the term during an impromptu speech."

That he has continued to use such comparisons indicates that "he means it," said Dr. David Gorski, a cancer surgeon at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit and a critic of the anti-vaccine movement who has tracked Kennedy's rhetoric for over 15 years. Gorski said Kennedy has been making Nazi and Holocaust references in relation to vaccines since at least 2013.

In the past few years, Gorski said, Kennedy has been more open about using such language, which he said may indicate Kennedy senses it resonates with the new fan base he has built up during the pandemic, or that the consequences of using such language aren't "unacceptably negative."

The AP investigation documented how Kennedy had grown his group during the pandemic, expanding his audience and pulling in millions of dollars in new funding.

Gorski said the language demonstrates one of the ways Kennedy likes to connect with his audience: buttering them up by portraying them as going against the flow and smarter than everyone else.

"If vaccine mandates are totalitarian like Nazis and the Soviet Union and that sort of thing, what does that make the anti-vaxxers? They're brave freedom fighters," Gorski said. "There's flattery in those analogies."

Aryeh Tuchman of the ADL's Center on Extremism said Kennedy's repeated comments invoking the Holocaust were shocking. Such rhetoric ratchets up tensions and leads to the demonization of people who disagree, whipping up anger and rage, Tuchman said, adding that the repeated comments showed Kennedy had a callous disregard for the feelings of Jewish people.

"These analogies are historically racist and hurtful to Jews and, frankly, to anyone who has a historical memory of who the Nazis were and what they did," Tuchman said. "Anything in the pursuit of his agenda."
