A court in Frankfurt, Germany, has sentenced Marcel Lamer (28), a doctoral student at Frankfurt University, to approximately two weeks in prison for rushing onto the stage with an Israeli flag during a Roger Waters concert held in May 2023 in Frankfurt.

Lamer, a pro-Israel activist, was part of a group that attempted to get Waters' performance canceled due to the former Pink Floyd member's antisemitic statements and frequent anti-Israel elements in his shows.

The pro-Israel activist arrived with a group of protesters at the event, participated in a peaceful demonstration outside, and then entered the venue with the intention of documenting the performance. His plan was to gather evidence if Waters made statements or engaged in activities that violated German law, which could then be reported to the police.

According to Lamer, immediately upon entering the venue, he noticed a prominent stand run by a pro-Arab organization called "The Voice of Palestine," a group whose members' homes had been raided by German police due to illegal activities. The stand featured calls for "intifada" and maps of Israel labeled entirely as "Palestine."

When the show began, an announcement stated, "If you don't agree with Roger Waters' political views, you can leave the hall now and go to the local bar." This was met with enthusiastic responses from the audience. In reaction, the pro-Israel activists raised Israeli flags and began singing "Am Yisrael Chai" (The People of Israel Live). At this point, Lamer decided to climb onto the stage with an Israeli flag.

Despite the presence of 30 security guards around the stage, he managed to evade them and spent about 20 seconds on stage wrapped in an Israeli flag in front of an audience of 10,000 people and Waters himself. Shortly afterward, a security guard forcibly removed him and handed him over to the police.

The production company filed a complaint against Lamer, and after several months, he was fined 500 euros (approximately $141) which was supposed to be donated to an anti-Zionist organization. "I made it clear that there was no way I would donate money to them and that I preferred to go to court," Lamer said.

About three weeks ago, he appeared in court, and despite testimony that he had not assaulted anyone and that this was a legitimate protest action, the court judges decided to increase the punishment to two weeks in prison or a fine of 1,500 euros (about $423).

"In court, they compared me to a hooligan soccer fan who breaks into the field, even though there's no ideological motivation in such an intrusion," Lamer explained. "When I explained to the judge that I considered this a necessary protest and that I had no intention of paying money to an anti-Israel organization, he said I was acting out of honor that resembled 'honor killing' behavior. I was shocked by the comparison."

Lamer's refusal was supposed to send him to jail in recent days, but he has filed an appeal to a higher court, and in the coming months, the regional court in Germany will hear his case.

"This story is becoming too expensive for me, but this isn't about money – it's about principles," Lamer explained. "I am German, aware of my people's history, and when we say 'never again,' it means we must protest against hatred of Jews. I didn't use violence and didn't harm anyone. I simply protested against an artist with antisemitic views who spreads lies against Israel. It seems distorted to me that they threaten to throw me in jail because I learned from our history in Germany that we must not remain silent when there is incitement against Jews and against the State of Israel."

Lamer's pro-Israel activities have already led to incidents at Frankfurt University. He has been verbally and physically attacked, flyers have been distributed in his neighborhood labeling him "anti-Muslim" and "pro-Zionist," strangers have photographed him in the cafeteria, and he has suffered ongoing harassment. Eventually, to avoid disruption to his studies, he decided to relocate to another city.

"I will continue to support Israel and the Jewish people. I know who you are, and I stand with you in any situation," Lamer promised.

Roger Waters has ignited a firestorm of controversy for denying that Hamas terrorists raped Israeli women during their brutal onslaught on Oct. 7, despite ample evidence to the contrary.

In a combative interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, the former Pink Floyd bassist insisted that "There's no evidence of that," to which Morgan swiftly countered, "The truth is there is, and even the UN has evidence."

The United Nations confirmed in May that Hamas terrorists had perpetrated sexual violence on Oct. 7. Similarly, while being interrogated by the IDF, a Hamas terrorist confessed to raping an Israeli woman during the massacre, as did his father and cousin. In addition, Amit Soussana, who was held in Gaza for 55 days after being abducted from her home on Oct. 7, recounted the horrific sexual assault she endured while in captivity in a chilling testimony to the New York Times.

The tension escalated further as Waters expressed skepticism about Hamas' abduction of infants and seniors. When the conversation turned to Kfir Bibas, who at nine months old became the youngest Israeli hostage taken on Oct. 7 along with his mother Shiri and four-year-old brother Ariel, Waters falsely claimed the infant had been released in a hostage exchange. Morgan corrected him, stating, "Kfir Bibas has not been released." Visibly agitated, Waters shot back, "You're making that up."

Further challenging, Waters posed a provocative question: "Wouldn't it be great if there was a real investigation to debunk all the disgusting lies the Israelis told after Oct. 7?" When pressed by Morgan to provide examples, Waters cited "burning babies and raping women." As Morgan insisted, "The truth is women were indeed raped," Waters remained steadfast in his denial, reiterating, "There is no evidence of that."

Waters' stance has put him at odds not only with many fans and public figures but also with former bandmates. David Gilmour, his one-time collaborator in Pink Floyd, has publicly rebuked Waters' comments, arguing that they tarnish the band's legacy.

Other music industry titans, including Mick Jagger and Elton John, have too denounced Waters' statements, declaring that his views cross ethical boundaries and that antisemitism has no place in the world of music.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism group tweeted, "There have been numerous accounts of the horrific sexual violence carried out by Hamas on 7th October and against the hostages in Gaza. Roger Waters flat-out denies that women were raped. This truly makes for a nauseating viewing."

The explosive interview marks the latest chapter in Waters' long history of controversial statements regarding Israel. His comments have previously triggered a wave of condemnation from Israeli politicians and Jewish organizations worldwide. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Waters' rhetoric as baseless and full of hate. Representatives from prominent groups such as the Anti-Defamation League and the Center for the Study of Antisemitism have not only condemned his statements but also called for a boycott of his performances.

The State Department said Tuesday that Waters has "a long track record of using antisemitic tropes" and a concert he gave late last month in Germany "contained imagery that is deeply offensive to Jewish people and minimized the Holocaust."

The comments came in a written response to a question posed at Monday's State Department press briefing about whether the administration agreed with criticism of Rogers from the US special envoy to combat antisemitism, Deborah Lipstadt.

"Special Envoy Lipstadt's quote-tweet speaks for itself," the department said. "The concert in question, which took place in Berlin, contained imagery that is deeply offensive to Jewish people and minimized the Holocaust. The artist in question has a long track record of using antisemitic tropes to denigrate Jewish people."

In a May 24 tweet after the concert in Berlin, during which Waters appeared on stage in a costume reminiscent of Nazi-era Germany, Lipstadt denounced the musician by echoing comments from EU antisemitism envoy Katharina von Schnurbein, who is German.

"I wholeheartedly concur with @EUAntisemitism 's condemnation of Roger Waters and his despicable Holocaust distortion," Lipstadt wrote in reply to a tweet from von Schnurbein.

Von Schnurbein had taken issue with Waters' performance in Berlin as well as his previous comments related to Israel and the Holocaust.

"I am sick & disgusted by Roger Waters' obsession to belittle and trivialize the Shoah & the sarcastic way in which he delights in trampling on the victims, systematically murdered by the Nazis," von Schnurbein wrote. "In Germany. Enough is enough."

Shortly after the concert, police in Berlin said they had opened an investigation of Waters on suspicion of incitement over the costume he wore.

Images on social media showed Waters firing an imitation machine gun while dressed in a long black coat with a red armband. Police confirmed that the costume could constitute a glorification, justification or approval of Nazi rule and therefore a disturbance of the public peace.

Ahead of the concert, several Jewish groups, politicians and an alliance of civil society groups gathered for a memorial ceremony and a protest rally against the event.

The Pink Floyd co-founder has been accused of antisemitism and drew ire for his support of the BDS movement, which calls for boycotts and sanctions against Israel.

Frankfurt authorities had initially tried to prevent the concert taking place, but Waters successfully challenged the move in a local court. The concert took place in the city's Festhalle, where in November 1938 more than 3,000 Jews were rounded up by the Nazis, beaten and abused, and later deported to concentration camps.

"Against this historical background, the concert should not have taken place under any circumstances," said Sacha Stawski, a member of the Frankfurt Jewish community and head of the group Honestly Concerned, that helped organize the protests.

"It's very frustrating" that the concert is going ahead as scheduled even though Frankfurt officials and many others tried to prevent it, Elio Adler, the head of the Jewish group WerteInitiative which supports the protest, told The Associated Press. "His words and imagery spread Jew-hatred and are part of a trend: to normalize Israel-hatred under the protection of freedom of speech or art."

Last week, police in Berlin said they had opened an investigation of Waters on suspicion of incitement over a costume he wore when he performed in the German capital earlier this month. Images on social media showed Waters firing an imitation machine gun while dressed in a long black coat with a red armband. Police confirmed that an investigation was opened over suspicions that the context of the costume could constitute a glorification, justification or approval of Nazi rule and therefore a disturbance of the public peace.

Waters rejected those accusations in a statement on Facebook and Instagram, saying that "the elements of my performance that have been questioned are quite clearly a statement in opposition to fascism, injustice, and bigotry in all its forms."

He claimed that "attempts to portray those elements as something else are disingenuous and politically motivated."

During Sunday's ceremony and protests, which took place in front of the Frankfurt concert venue before Waters' concert was set to begin, protesters read out loud the names of 600 Jews who were rounded up at the Festhalle on November 9, 1939, the so-called Kristallnacht – the "Night of Broken Glass" – when Nazis terrorized Jews throughout Germany and Austria.

The organizers also held a joint Jewish-Christian prayer for the victims of the Nazi terror in Frankfurt. The city's mayor as well as the head of the local Jewish community spoke at the protest.

"Hatred of Jews is to be condemned everywhere in our city," Frankfurt Mayor Mike Josef said, according to German news agency dpa. "There is no reason to hate, insult and attack a person because of his religion."

Before the performance began, around 400 protesters handed out flyers to concertgoers and waved Israeli flags. Others held up banners with slogans such as "Israel, we stand with you" or "Roger Waters, wish you were not here" in reference to Pink Floyd's famous song "Wish You Were Were," dpa reported.

Protesters in Munich rallied against a concert by Waters earlier this month, after the city council said it had explored possibilities of banning the performance but concluded that it wasn't legally possible to cancel a contract with the organizer.

Last year, the Polish city of Krakow canceled gigs by Waters because of his sympathetic stance toward Russia in its war against Ukraine.

Once the police investigation is concluded, the case will be handed to Berlin prosecutors, who would decide whether to pursue any charges.

During the performance, he also compared the death of Anne Frank during the Holocaust for being a Jew to the death of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu-Akleh "for being a Palestinians", even though the latter died because she was accidentally caught in the crossfire when IDF was in a counterterrorism raid near Jenin. Following the performance, Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli took to Twitter to write: Roger Waters is one of the world's worst Jew-haters and Holocaust deniers. look at this sickening background from his concert last night in Berlin. Anne Frank and 6 million Jews cannot answer you. But know @rogerwaters , you are an absolute disgrace to humanity!"

The European Jewish Congress also expressed its disgust, saying: "Roger Waters gig in Berlin. Is there anything more antisemitic than using Anne Frank as a prop on a German stage while prancing around in a Nazi uniform attacking Jews?"

Waters rejected the accusations in a statement early Saturday on Facebook and Instagram, saying that "the elements of my performance that have been questioned are quite clearly a statement in opposition to fascism, injustice, and bigotry in all its forms."

At a support rally for imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange last week, Waters, 77, told the crowd he had rejected a lucrative request by Facebook to use the 1979 song "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" for an Instagram ad.

Waters said the offer was for "a huge, huge amount of money."

"[The request to use the song] arrived this morning, with an offer for a huge, huge amount of money," Waters revealed. "And the answer is, 'F–k you. No f– –in' way.'"

He added, "I only mention that because this is an insidious movement of them to take over absolutely everything. I will not be a party to this bulls–t, [Mark] Zuckerberg."

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (AP/Andrew Harnik)

Waters said the letter sent by Facebook read in part: "We feel that the core sentiment of this song is still so prevalent and so necessary today, which speaks to how timeless the work is."

Waters said he didn't want to take part in anything that makes the company more powerful.

"And yet, they want to use it to make Facebook and Instagram more powerful than it already is," the British singer told the crowd. "So that it can continue to censor all of us in this room and prevent this story about Julian Assange getting out into the general public so the general public can go, 'What? No. No More.'"

US authorities accuse Australian-born Assange, 49, of 18 counts relating to the release by WikiLeaks of vast troves of confidential US military records and diplomatic cables which they said had put lives in danger. The US is seeking his extradition from British custody.

Waters also directly criticized Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, calling him a "little prick" and one of the most "powerful idiots in the world."

He added, "You think, how did this little prick, who started off going, 'She's pretty, we'll give her a 4 out of 5, she's ugly, we'll give her a 1.' How the f–k did he get any power in anything? And yet here he is; one of the most powerful idiots in the world."

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Instagram's marketing team did reach out to inquire about using the Pink Floyd song in an advertisement but that Zuckerberg was not involved in any way.

In April, Waters, an ardent anti-Israel activist and supporter of the BDS movement against the Jewish state, called to suspend Israeli soccer teams from FIFA, the international soccer governing body, and UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations.

In March, he called legendary singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder to refuse to accept the Wolf Prize, because it is granted in Israel. He previously called on musicians like John Bon Jovi, Lana Del Rey, Robbie Williams, and Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke to not perform in Israel.

In 2019, the year Israel hosted the Eurovision contest, Waters and other European artists signed a letter calling for the song competition to be moved elsewhere, and called on Madonna, who was scheduled to perform at the opening ceremony, to cancel.

Wonder was awarded the prestigious international award in February for "his tremendous contribution to music and society enriching the lives of entire generations of music lovers," according to a statement from President Reuven Rivlin's office.

In a video Waters posted on Twitter on Tuesday, he reminded Wonder that a few years earlier, he had canceled a concert for a group that raised money for the IDF and called on him to stand up against the "apartheid regime" again.

"I know you're not going to accept this Wolf Prize, and neither you should. This is an apartheid regime. This is Israel. You will be whitewashing them beyond all belief if you accept the Wolf Prize," Waters said in the video.

Wonder was scheduled to perform at the Friends of the IDF concert in 2012 that was raising money for the Israeli army but decided to call it off due to petitions from pro-Palestinian groups and recommendations of the United Nations.

In his Twitter post, Waters praised Wonder for his decision back in 2012, for the money would have otherwise been used by the IDF to "go out and murder more innocent Palestinians with impunity."

Waters has a history of similar requests, having previously called on musicians like John Bon Jovi, Lana Del Rey, Robbie Williams, and Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke to not perform in Israel.

In 2019, the year Israel hosted the Eurovision contest, Waters and other European artists signed a letter calling for the song competition to be moved elsewhere, and called on Madonna, who was scheduled to perform at the opening ceremony, to cancel.

Jewish groups have criticized the Major League Baseball's promotion of anti-Israel activist and BDS supporter Roger Waters' upcoming North American tour.

MLB.com is among the organizations sponsoring ticket presales for Waters' This Is Not a Drill tour.

MLB emailed baseball fans an advertisement featuring its logo, along with the logo of Waters' tour, and offered fans an opportunity to purchase presale tickets. The promotion was part of an ad buy by AEG/Concerts West for multiple concert tours, according to The Associated Press.

In a Jan. 29 letter sent to MLB commissioner Robert Manfred, B'nai B'rith president Charles O. Kaufman and CEO Daniel S. Mariaschin expressed "deep dismay" at MLB.com's advertisement.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

"Waters is an avowed anti-Semite whose views on Jews and Israel far exceed the boundaries of civil discourse," they wrote, adding that they were "saddened and outraged that baseball … would use its online resources to publicize an individual with an alarming history of anti-Semitic hatred. We call on MLB to cease providing Roger Waters a platform."

The Zionist Organization of America said it was "horrified" by the MLB's involvement in selling tickets for Waters' tour, "especially in an era when attacks against American Jews have become an epidemic."

"We call on Major League Baseball to immediately sever its ties to Roger Waters, cease promoting his upcoming concert tour, and repudiate Waters' vile lies about Jews and about the Jewish State of Israel, which incite Jew-hatred," ZOA president Morton Klein, chair Mark Levenson and ZOA regional director Steve Feldman said in a statement.

"MLB's promotion of Waters give Waters' Jew-hatred its stamp of approval and legitimizes Israelophobia." continued the statement. "ZOA demands that Major League Baseball stop promoting Jew-hatred and evil Israel-bashing by MLB's unconscionable promotion of Jew-hater Israelophobe Roger Waters and his group Pink Floyd."

Eighty organizations urged the University of Massachusetts in Amherst to rescind all named university sponsorship of an event next month that the groups allege will "incite animosity towards supporters of Israel, including Jewish and pro-Israel students on your campus."

In a letter to UMass chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy, the organizations also requested that in the future, UMass faculty will be prohibited from using the university's name or resources to further their own personal or political agenda.

"This is not an educational event but a political rally," stated the letter. "Rather than aiming to promote an understanding of a highly contentious and polarizing issue by including speakers with a variety of perspectives, this event includes speakers with only one extremely partisan perspective and clearly aims to promote a political cause and encourage political action."

"Providing the imprimatur of three academic departments to such a politically motivated and directed event violates the core academic mission of the university, suppresses student expression and impedes the free exchange of ideas so essential for any university," it continued.

The May 4 event, titled "Not Backing Down: Israel, Free Speech & the Battle for Palestinian Rights," is being organized by the NGO Media Education Foundation (MEF), whose director, Sut Jhally, is also a UMass professor and chair of the communication department.

The groups alleged that Jhally's actions violate the UMass Amherst Principles of Employee Conduct.

It will include a panel and a discussion of "recent attacks on [Minnesota] Rep. Ilhan Omar and other progressives who have spoken out against Israel's 50-year military occupation of Palestinian land and criticized pro-Israel pressure groups for conflating legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies with 'anti-Semitism.' "

Speakers will include supporters of the anti-Israel BDS movement, including musician Roger Waters, Women's March leader Linda Sarsour, and professor and former CNN commentator Marc Lamont Hill.

The event is being sponsored by three UMass departments: the Department of Communication; the Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and the Resistance Studies Initiative UMass.

"Although we recognize that the event itself is protected by the First Amendment, we believe that its department sponsorship constitutes an unacceptable violation of the university's academic mission, will encourage acts of politically motivated aggression and violence on your campus, and is a fundamental breach of the public trust," stated the groups.

"We call on you to rescind all university sponsorship of this event and to assure us that in the future, UMass faculty will not be permitted to use the university's name or resources to promote their personal political agendas at the expense of academic integrity and the safety and well-being of UMass students."

The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
