A "heroic" LNER staff member sustained life-threatening injuries while intervening to save passengers during a mass stabbing on a high-speed train, The Guardian learned from police on Sunday. The British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed the LNER employee was seen on CCTV trying to stop the attacker as the train traveled through Cambridgeshire, The Guardian reported.

A major incident was declared by BTP on the 6:25 p.m. service to central London, and a 32-year-old British national is now in custody, The Guardian noted. Witnesses described a "terrifying" 14-minute ordeal after leaving Peterborough, with bloodied victims moving through the train. The incident led to 11 people requiring hospital treatment after an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon station.

The suspect, Anthony Williams, who was brandishing a large knife, was Tasered on the platform by police; a bystander recorded him shouting: "Kill me, kill me." The Guardian also reported that a 35-year-old man initially arrested was released after being cleared of involvement, and five victims have since been discharged from the hospital.

BTP Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy called the incident "a horrific attack that has had a wide impact" and confirmed his thoughts were with the injured, "especially the brave member of rail staff whose family are being supported by specialist officers," The Guardian cited. Cundy added, "Having viewed the CCTV from the train, the actions of the member of rail staff were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people's lives."

Police have stated there is no indication the event was a terrorist incident and have asked the public for more information.

Following the attack, both the RMT and TSSA unions praised the rail staff and called for reviews, The Guardian noted. RMT's Eddie Dempsey stated he is "seeking urgent meetings with government, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the strongest possible support, resources and robust procedures in place". Maryam Eslamdoust of the TSSA urged LNER and the government "to act swiftly to review security, to support the affected workers, and to ensure nothing like this happens again", according to The Guardian.

British Transport Police arrested two suspects following the violent Saturday evening assault on the 6.25pm London North Eastern Railway service traveling between Doncaster and London King's Cross. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the incident "appalling" while the UK's terror threat level remains "substantial."

Counter-terrorism investigators joined authorities Sunday, examining a mass stabbing aboard a train that sent nine passengers to the hospital with critical injuries. Authorities halted the train at Huntingdon station in Cambridgeshire following the initial emergency call, logged at 7:39 p.m. on Saturday, according to Sky News.

Officers deployed tasers against a suspect wielding a large blade during what witnesses described as a violent assault on the high-speed rail service departing from Peterborough station. British Transport Police confirmed detaining two individuals while 10 people – nine sustaining critical injuries – required hospital treatment following the attack, Sky News reported.

Passengers reported that the assault began approximately nine minutes after the train departed from Peterborough, prompting travelers to activate emergency alerts. Witnesses recounted scenes of passengers trampling others while some sought refuge in lavatory compartments, Sky News reported.

Authorities have designated the situation a "major incident" while confirming that counter-terrorism investigators have joined the probe, Sky News reported.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer characterized the violence as an "appalling incident" that was "deeply concerning." "My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response," Starmer posted on X. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated she was "deeply saddened" by the attack while calling on the public to "avoid comment and speculation at this early stage," Sky News reported.

Defence Secretary John Healey informed Sky News during Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips that he traveled the identical route mere hours before Saturday evening's assault. "It's the service I use every week to get home to Rotherham, so I can't begin to imagine how shocked and frightened those passengers were," Healey stated, according to Sky News.

When Phillips questioned whether the assault modified the nation's terror threat designation, Healey indicated no change occurred and the level remains "substantial" – signifying an attack is deemed "likely," Sky News reported.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary's chief constable informed the MP that officers conducted training for comparable emergencies "only last week," with Obese-Jecty additionally urging restraint regarding circumstantial assumptions, according to Sky News. "I think also people need to keep cool heads at this time. I've seen an awful lot of speculation online and a lot of misinformation," Obese-Jecty added, Sky News reported.

A 50-year-old Jerusalem resident was apprehended on Saturday following an alleged attempt to stab worshippers at a synagogue in the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim. The incident, which took place during morning prayers, left one person with a minor finger cut that did not require medical treatment.

Several congregants managed to disarm the woman, wresting the sharp weapon from her grasp before she fled the scene.

The Metropolitan Police have voiced their exasperation with ongoing violence after four people were stabbed during this year's event, reports The Telegraph.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who oversaw the policing operation, expressed his frustration, stating, "We are tired of seeing crime scenes at Carnival." He emphasized that Sunday was supposed to be a "family day" suitable for all ages, but instead was marred by "unacceptable violence." This annual celebration of Caribbean heritage, arts, and culture has been running for over 50 years.

The incident involving the mother was particularly distressing. "One of those in hospital, a 32-year-old woman whose condition remains critical, was at Carnival with her young child," Adelekan noted.

In addition to the stabbings, there were two incidents of slash wounds and one involving a corrosive substance. By Monday night, 230 arrests had been made for various offenses, including sexual crimes, assaults on emergency workers, theft, and drug-related charges.

The police implemented a Section 60 order from Sunday evening until early Monday morning, granting officers additional powers to stop and search individuals in the area. This measure also allowed them to demand the removal of face coverings used to conceal identities.

Despite the incidents, the carnival, billed as "the greatest community-led event on the planet" by organizers, saw around a million attendees over the Bank Holiday weekend. Approximately 7,000 officers were deployed to oversee the celebrations.

Adelekan appealed to the public for assistance, stating, "It is the responsibility of all who value this event, who want to see it as the celebration it should be, to speak out and speak up about the violence that continues to overshadow it."

The Israel Police and the Shin Bet security agency are still exercising caution and are not calling the last eight stabbing and shooting attacks in Jerusalem – and dozens of other attacks and attempted attacks nationwide in the past 10 weeks – a wave of terrorism. The Israeli public, on the other hand, has been forced to acknowledge that "shahada" – a martyr's death – is seeing a renaissance in Palestinian society.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

The many terrorist attacks have led to greater focus on the "shahid" and their qualities in Palestinian media and social media. This focus never shifted, but is now taking up more space. The relevant Quran quote is also being thrown around frequently: "And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, 'They are dead.' Rather, they are alive, with their lord, and they have provision."

Now Israel Hayom is exposing the wills of the terrorists, both those who were killed during the attacks and those who lived through them, and their motives. The wills teach us about the harsh terminology that arises from their last letters and social media posts – what they leave behind.

Former mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Ikrama Sabri explained during the Second Intifada that "the Muslim loves death and martyrdom like the Jews love life." The wills of the latest two shahids who, unfortunately, managed to carry out their plans, illustrate Sabri's remark. They both wanted to die. Mohammed Shawkat Salima, who last Saturday fell on Haredi youth Avraham Elmaliach near Damascus Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem and wounded him badly before he was fatally shot by security forces, posted on his old Facebook page a post in which he defined himself as "a martyr on the waiting list."

"May Allah soon bring me to him," Salima wrote alongside a picture of another Palestinian, Sab Abu Abid, who was killed in clashes with the IDF in 2017.

Fadi Abu Shkhaydam, who murdered Eliyahu Kay near the Western Wall, was also fatally shot. Before leaving to carry out his planned attack, he left a much more detailed will than Salima's, in which he claimed that "after years of work, study, and teaching, there is no choice but to let the ship said on our blood and serve as a practical example in the field of jihad."

Until recently, Abu Shkhaydam, a member of Hamas, had a working relationship with high-ranking members of the Muslim Waqf on the Temple Mount and only four months ago finished running a course offered by the Waqf titled "The Battalion of Resilience and Ribat."

Fadi Abu Shkhaydam is seen, weapon in hands, on his way to come a "martyr"

He also took care to integrate "ribat" – an Islamic term that describes taking one's place at the front of a holy war against infidels – in his will, in which he wrote, "The best path for us in light of the abuse of our mosque [Al-Aqsa Mosque – N.S.] is to redeem it with our blood. We have no honorable life so long as our mosque undergoes one failure after another and so long as the assaults against it increase. Therefore, prepare yourselves for ribat, for jihad, for sacrifice, and to give your life and throw off the bonds of this world."

The written statements the killer left behind are unusual when compared to the wills of other murderers of his profile, because Abu Shkhaydam went beyond background and explanation for his planned action and actually instructed the hundreds of pupils he left behind to prepare themselves for similar acts in the future.

Half leave wills

Nor are Abu Shkhaydam and Salima alone. A look through dozens of wills reveals not only the terrorists' motives, but also their need to share their "legacies" with large audiences and win legitimacy for their deeds.

For Israel's security forces, the wills are a treasure trove that enables them to heighten the precision of the system that tracks hundreds of thousands of internet users and social media participants each day, hoping to thwart similar attacks. Authorities think that hundreds of attacks have been prevented this way.

The scope of the tracking and location work is enormous, especially at times of tension around the Temple Mount. In a single day after the shooting attack on the Mount itself in July 2017, over 500,000 posts from the PA territories and the Arab world went up discussing the situation on the Mount. Many intended or directly called for terrorist attacks.

The wills, however, often tell a story that is not religious or nationalist, but one of personal distress that led the attacker to carry out their plan. Mohammad Younis, who last week ran his car into a security guard at the Te'enim checkpoint, is believed to have argued with his father before taking his car without permission and deciding to become a martyr.

Other times, the motive is revenge or identification with other shahids, what the Shin Bet calls "copycat attacks" or "infection." In the case of Tharwat Ibrahim Salman Al-Shawari, 72, a mother of five who tried to run down soldiers near Halhul, the attacker had a sense that her death was approaching. She had told her relatives that if she was going to die, it would be better to do so as a shahid rather than "in bed," as she called it.

Some 50% of terrorists who carried out attacks or attempted to in the last few years left behind some kind of will. The most common motive documented in the wills is the situation of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the desire to defend it from "Jewish invasion," a reference to Jewish visits to the Mount. In Palestinian society, the Al-Aqsa shahids are considered the elite, celebrities in every sense, and guarantee themselves a place of honor in the Palestinian pantheon of martyrs. Their wills are according popular.

This is the kind of fame that came to Abu Shkhaydam, who wrote to his "brothers and comrades in dawa and Islamic activity" that "our blessed words and dawa, with which we have been busy since we were young, demand that we sacrifice and give our lives so that our words will not stay dead or without life." (Translation courtesy of MEMRI).

Abu Shkhaydam even appealed directly to his students: "In every meeting I was sorry [to hear] that someone had beat me to Paradise by attacking [the enemy]. I would tell you stories about them, from friends of the Prophet to the lions of Islam of our time. Long live Allah. I never ceased to weep when I would tell you about them, but I would prepare myself and prepare to join them and follow their path … I command every one of you to adhere to this path."

One of the "lions of Islam" about whom he taught his students was Mesbah Abu Sabih, who left behind a chilling will of his own. Abu Sabih, known to his admirers as the "lion of Al-Quds," murdered Levana Malichi and Yosef Kirma in a shooting attack at the light train station on Bar Lev Blvd. in Jerusalem in October 2016.

Abu Sabih was also a member of Hamas. He also wanted to prevent Jews from visiting the Temple Mount. Like Abu Shkhaydam, he taught the Quran at a mosque and the writings he left behind before he was fatally shot while carrying out his attack predicted what was to come, but were not identified in time.

'A revolution has begun in Jerusalem'

Abu Sabih, whom Abu Shkhaydam admired, admitted he envied shahids and wanted to be like them. Among other things, he wrote that "Al-Aqsa Mosque is awash in blood," "was burned every day for 47 years and awaits someone who will put it out … do not abandon Al-Aqsa Mosque." In his will, he pleaded, "On Judgment Day, we will be asked what we did for Al-Aqsa Mosque to keep it part of the faith of every Muslim in the world."

Without Al-Aqsa, he warned, "There will be blood. There are men who will redeem Al-Aqsa with their blood. Jerusalem sits on the mouth of a volcano that is about to erupt. Al-Aqsa Mosque is closed and the murderers of children invade it every day." But, he wrote, "In Jerusalem, a revolution has started that is not a revolution of rocks alone."

Abu Sabih, who was a violent type with a criminal past, and Abu Shkhaydam, supposedly more learned and gentle, wrote nearly identical things. So did Mohammed Tarayreh, 19, who murdered Hillel Yaffa Ariel, 13, while she was sleeping in her bed in her home in Kiryat Arba in June 2016.

Omar Al-Abed, a resident of Kobar who stabbed three members of the Salomon family as they were gathered around the Shabbat table in their home in Halmish, left a "last will and testament" on Facebook an hour and 40 minutes before leaving to kill. His writings also dealt with the "bitter fate of Al-Aqsa."

"The mosque is being defiled and we sleep," Al-Abed scolded. "It is a disgrace for us to sit and do nothing. You, who pull out guns only at weddings and celebrations, are you not ashamed of yourselves? … All I have is a honed knife and it is answering the call of Al-Aqsa. I am going to Paradise, my home is there. I want nothing beyond that. Allah will judge whoever does not carry out my will. Put a band of Al-Qassem around my head and on my chest, a picture of Abu Amar [Yasser Arafat]. I will take them to the grave with me."

'The noose is around my neck'

But it's not all about Al-Aqsa. Ibrahim Halas, who in April 2020 ran down a police officer at a checkpoint in Abu Dis and was fatally shot at the scene, connected his act to criminal trouble, writing, "They set the entire world against me, they ruined my life. The noose is already around my neck. From the time I was young, I drank alcohol and used drugs, but I am an honest and fair person and want to divorce my wife for these reasons, which have brought me to the edge."

Nimer Mahmoud Jamal, who was 37 when he murdered three Israelis on Har Adar in September 2017, also did so because of personal problems. He had a long string of violent criminal offense, mostly domestic violence, and in his will he told his wife that she should not be troubled because of his actions. "You have nothing to do with what I am about to carry out. I was a bad husband and a bad father and you were a good wife and a caring mother. I tried to mend my ways, but I never could. You deserve a better life than the life you had with me."

There are also attackers inspired by a desire to mimic or get revenge. Ayman Kurd, 20, who stabbed two police officers near Damascus Gate after his cousin Ramzi died in a shooting in Hebron, wrote to his mother: "Be sure that I did not do this because of anyone, but of my own will. I thought about it even before my 'brother' Ramzi died a martyr's death … Bury me in the shahids' graveyard near my brother Ramzi." Kurd even asked that his death be celebrated: "I want them to have a party for me."

Longing to die

Abada Abu Ras, the son of a senior Hamas official who was deported to London in the early 1990s, was responsible for a terrorist stabbing in Givat Zeev in January 2016. Two weeks earlier he had written: "I long for an event in which I will lose my life." Abu Ras posted a picture of his inspiration – Mohand Halabi, who murdered Nechemia Lavi and Aharon Benita three months earlier.

Fuad Abu Rajab a-Tamimi from Issawiya in east Jerusalem, who opened fire on two police officers and was killed at the scene, left an explanation that he wanted to become a martyr. "My death was to sanctify and glorify Allah… Don't spread hatred in the hearts of my brothers after my death. Let them discover the religion and their own path, so they can die for the purpose of being a shahid and not as revenge."

Qutaiba Zahran, 17, from the Tulkarem region, who stabbed a Border Police officer near Tapuah Junction and was shot and killed on the spot, wrote a long post on Facebook titled "The will of a shahid," in which he bid farewell to his family and explained that the attack he was about to perpetrate was to avenge the blood of "Palestine's shahids."

The many wills and posts that the attackers prepare show that most assume they will die trying to carry out their plans. The catchy message that Yasser Arafat made popular years ago, "Millions of shahids are marching toward Jerusalem," is being voiced again now. If this is the case, it's hard to discuss deterrence, and what's more, Palestinian society for the most part embraces the martyrs and even praises them. In a reality like this, security forces' main focus is on preventing attacks through human intelligence as well as electronic means, and by being on the alert – as we have seen at Damascus Gate.

Authorities announced Wednesday that the woman who was stabbed earlier in the day in Jerusalem's Shimon HaTzadik neighborhood (also known as Sheikh Jarrah) is 26-year-old Moriah Cohen. She was attacked while walking her children to school by a 15-year-old girl who lives in the neighborhood.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

Cohen's husband, Dvir, told Israel Hayom, "We will not leave the neighborhood. We believe in settling in east Jerusalem. We know that there are terrorists around us, but we will continue to settle Jerusalem until they understand one day that Israel is the one in charge.

"We are being threatened, and I have heard threats like 'I will kill you' many times. Such incidents happen daily, and there is also threatening graffiti. During Hanukkah, our menorah was extinguished and another one was broken. We live near terrorists."

Moriah "stepped out this morning and an Arab teenager who followed her stabbed her in the upper back. I was on reserve duty and my wife was alone with our five children. Someone who was there called an ambulance and she was taken to the hospital. She underwent some tests and thank God, her internal organs had not been injured."

When asked whether he knew the attacker, Dvir said, "It seems she is a neighbor of ours. She followed my wife. Moriah got to an intersection not far from our house. She told me that one of our sons screamed, 'Mom, you have a knife in your back.' It was a miracle.

"The terrorist was probably startled by the situation and fled, which was a miracle because our five children were there. Had she continued, I don't know how the situation could have ended. Ever since Operation Guardian of the Walls, our house was hit by 11 Molotov cocktails, and targeted by rockthrowers. We will continue to live here, that is part of our mission.

"Moriah is feeling well. The knife was long but did not injure internal organs. Please God, she will recover and be discharged from the hospital today."

In November, Israel Hayom interviewed Moriah and Dvir, who spoke about their lives in the flashpoint neighborhood.

"My hardest moment here was on Jerusalem Day," Moriah said back then. "When I wanted to go home with the kids from the celebrations, and all of a sudden there was a siren. From afar, I saw thousands of Arabs facing our homes, whistling and dancing with joy, and I was cut off from reaching my home, the place that's supposed to be my safety and my defense. It was a terrible feeling."

For the couple's five children, the events in May were difficult. Nevertheless, they projected confidence in the children's presence.

"We told them that the noises from the Arab attacks were noises from police actions that were defending us, but at one stage, our oldest child, Yinon-David, who's five, asked, 'Dad, if the police are protecting us, why aren't they here?' That's an emotionally healthy kid. When a guest asked him one time if he was afraid to live here, he said completely naturally and innocently, 'Why, are you afraid to live in your house?'"

Despite everything, Dvir and Moriah said that when things are calm, which is much more common than the days of rioting, "It's nice to raise children here. We returned to the Land of Israel and Jerusalem after 2,000 years."

The couple has been in the neighborhood for six years and came here after spending a few months living in Jewish homes in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.

A 27-year-old man who stabbed four people with a knife on a German high-speed train apparently attacked his victims "at random" and showed signs of mental illness, authorities said Sunday.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

Police said the suspect, a Syrian citizen, came to Germany in 2014 and was granted asylum in 2016. He had been living in Passau. Investigators said an initial evaluation suggested he suffered from mental illness. Police and investigators told reporters in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz that the attacker's intentions were still unclear, but there was no indication currently of a terror motive.

Using an 8-centimeter (3.1-inch) folding knife, the suspect first went after a 26-year-old man in the same train car, wounding him in the head. The suspect then attacked a 60-year-old man, who was wounded on his head and torso, and another 60-year-old man, who also was wounded. At that point, the suspect fled to another train car and stabbed a 39-year-old man on his upper body.

All four victims were from the Regensburg and nearby Passau area and were taken to nearby hospitals.

A man suspected of stabbing a rabbi several times near a Jewish day school in Boston was held without bail Friday at his arraignment pending a hearing to determine whether he is a danger to society.

Khaled Awad, 24, pleaded not guilty to assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a police officer in connection with the Thursday afternoon stabbing of Chabad Rabbi Shlomo Noginski in the city's Brighton neighborhood.

The attorney who represented Awad on Friday could not be reached for comment.

The hearing to determine whether Awad is a danger to society is scheduled for July 8. Awad has no record in Massachusetts but has faced charges of battery and theft in Florida and was sent to a mental health facility there, prosecutors said.

The motive for the stabbing remains unclear, and police are still investigating. District Attorney Rachael Rollins said at a vigil in support of Noginksi on Friday her office has opened a civil rights investigation to determine whether the stabbing is a hate crime.

"We have to recognize that antisemitism is on the rise, and we need to hold people accountable when they do this, so that they are made an example of," Rollins said at the vigil not far from the stabbing site, attended by several hundred people.

The suspect approached the rabbi with a gun and a knife while he was talking on the phone, sitting on the steps of the school, according to prosecutors and Rabbi Dan Rodkin, executive director of Shaloh House. The suspect allegedly demanded the rabbi's car keys, and Noginski ran across the street to a park where he was stabbed.

According to court documents, when police located the suspect, he pointed what appeared to be a firearm at them. Three officers drew their weapons and ordered the suspect to drop his gun multiple times, authorities said. The suspect then lowered his firearm and threw it to the ground.

The suspect kicked one of the officers in the stomach as he was being assisted into a transport vehicle for booking, police said.

As soon as the school became aware of the stabbing, the facility went into lockdown and no children were ever in danger, Rodkin said in a Facebook post.

Noginski is an Israeli citizen who came to the Boston area as an emissary to spread the Chabad message, Consul General of Israel to New England Meron Reuben told the Boston Herald.

"We are horrified by what has happened," Reuben said.

Noginski, who spoke to Lubavitch.com from his hospital bed, has since been released from the hospital.

"I am grateful to the Boston Police Department for their rapid response and relieved that the perpetrator is in custody. I am looking forward to returning to my work as soon as possible," he said.

Some who attended Friday's vigil held in a steady rain think the stabbing was a hate crime.

"I don't think there's a member of our Jewish community who did not hear about this stabbing and think to themselves, 'Oh my God, it's happened here in Boston,'" said Marc Baker, president of Combined Jewish Philanthropies.

The attack on the rabbi was an attack on the entire city, acting Mayor Kim Janey said: "I believe that an attack on any member of our community is an attack on all of us."

Police apprehended the suspect, 24-year-old Khaled Awad. Law enforcement said his motives for the crime were not yet clear and did not immediately identify the attack as a hate crime.

Noginski was taken to the trauma unit of a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was reported to be in stable condition.

The attack occurred against the backdrop of an alarming spike in antisemitism in the United States. A recent survey by the Anti-Defamation League said that 63% of American Jews had experienced or witnessed antisemitism over the past five years.

At the same time, 59% of respondents said they felt Jews were less safe in the US now than they were a decade ago, and 49% expressed fear of a violent attack at a synagogue.

In a post on Twitter, the organization said the attack "has sent a shockwave of fear and anxiety throughout the community" and called for full transparency in the police investigation.
