Two swastikas were discovered Wednesday morning on a yeshiva in Brooklyn, just hours after Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City. Mamdani swiftly condemned the act, calling it "a disgusting and heartbreaking act of antisemitism, and it has no place in our beautiful city," He added, "As Mayor, I will always stand steadfast with our Jewish neighbors to root the scourge of antisemitism out of our city."

According to the New York Post, security staff at the Magen David Yeshiva in Gravesend discovered the symbols painted in red on the building's columns and a window around 6:30 a.m. local time. The suspect, dressed in black, fled on foot and has not yet been apprehended.

At the same time, New York City Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker announced his resignation, becoming the first senior city official to step down following Mamdani's election. In a letter to outgoing Mayor Eric Adams, Tucker wrote that it had been "a once-in-a-lifetime honor" to serve as fire commissioner, and that he would leave his post on December 19. "Until then, I will continue to lead the world's greatest fire department and ensure a smooth transition," he wrote.

According to Bloomberg, citing a person familiar with the matter, Tucker's decision was influenced by his strong Zionist convictions and his belief that he could not continue serving under Mamdani. The report noted that before joining City Hall, Tucker founded and ran T&M Protection Resources, a security and intelligence firm operating in the US and Israel, and is expected to return to that role after his departure. His resignation breaks a long-standing city tradition in which commissioners remain in office until a new mayor's term begins.

In addition, Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, announced new initiatives to address Mamdani's rise to the leadership of a city that is home to the largest Jewish community in the world. The organization will launch a dedicated hotline for reporting antisemitic incidents, establish a monitoring program to track policies and appointments in City Hall, and publish regular public reports on the actions of the Mamdani administration.

"The mayor-elect has promoted antisemitic narratives, aligned himself with people who have histories of antisemitism, and displayed open hostility toward the Jewish state that runs counter to the views of the overwhelming majority of New York's Jews," Greenblatt said. "We are deeply concerned that those individuals and principles will influence his administration at a time when we are tracking a brazen surge of harassment, vandalism, and violence targeting Jewish residents and institutions in recent years."

He added, "This is just a start. But make no mistake: ADL's core purpose is to protect the Jewish people, and we will be relentless and unyielding in our work to ensure the safety and security of all Jewish New Yorkers."

According to recent polls, 60% of Jewish voters cast their ballots for Andrew Cuomo, while 30% supported Mamdani and 8% backed Curtis Sliwa. In the ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods of Midwood and Borough Park, Cuomo won by a landslide with about 76% of the vote. Mamdani, however, received 71% support in Crown Heights and 61% in Williamsburg. He also performed well among liberal Jewish communities in Manhattan and parts of Queens, particularly among young and secular families. Roughly 960,000 Jews live in New York City, with the largest populations in Brooklyn (462,000) and Manhattan (277,000).

In his victory speech, Mamdani sought to counter criticism that his anti-Israel positions amounted to antisemitism, declaring that he would "build a City Hall that stands steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers and does not waver in the fight against the scourge of antisemitism." He then addressed his Muslim supporters, speaking in Arabic, and added, "No more will New York be a city where you can traffic in Islamophobia and win an election." The city's one million Muslims, he said, "know they belong, not only in the five boroughs but also in the corridors of power."

In an unprecedented provocation, controversial artist Kanye West has removed his entire Yeezy brand collection, leaving only a single white T-shirt emblazoned with a swastika available for purchase at $20. The decision to make this antisemitic merchandise available for shipping to Israel has particularly intensified the widespread condemnation, with critics calling it a deliberate act of provocation.

The brand's website, which previously featured a complete collection including T-shirts and the transparent bodysuit worn by his wife Bianca Censori at the Grammy after-party, now displays only the offensive item bearing a black swastika. Sources confirmed West personally directed the removal of all other merchandise.

Leading figures in the fashion industry have united in calling for the immediate withdrawal of the offensive product. The controversy comes amid growing scrutiny of West's recent behavior, including the much-discussed Grammy Awards appearance of his wife.

The launch of this provocative merchandise coincides with West's removal from X following an extensive antisemitic posting spree. West, who has a documented history of making offensive statements about the Jewish community, accompanied the product release with explicit statements supporting Nazi ideology.

West posted a series of inflammatory messages on X Friday, including explicit praise for Hitler. Following intense public pressure on platform owner Elon Musk, West's profile disappeared from the platform Monday morning.

Platform administrators have not clarified whether West's account was suspended or self-deleted. The removal came after widespread calls for action following posts including: "I love it when Jews come to me saying they can't work with me anymore," "I love Hitler. So what now, b*****s?", "I'm a Nazi," and "Call me Yadolph Hitler" – a play on his current name, Ye.

Richard Goldberg, host of Jewish Insider's Limited Liability Podcast and adviser at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, shared a video on X of a masked individual carrying a Nazi flag during a demonstration against Israel near the Democratic National Convention in Chicago recently.

Goldberg described the presence of the Nazi flag at the anti-Israel event as "shocking to no one who knows history." Goldberg referenced the historical connection between Haj Amin Al Husseini, the Mufti of Jerusalem, and Adolf Hitler.

In addition to the Nazi emblem, some demonstrators were seen displaying flags associated with Hamas and Hezbollah, both classified as terrorist organizations.

Numerous protesters opposing Israel have been taken into custody outside the Democratic National Convention in recent days.

"Well, this was an unpleasant way to start the day," Rabbi Eli Moshe Levitansky, co-director of Chabad of Santa Monica College, wrote on Facebook on Oct. 8. "I got a real wake-up when I walked into the Chabad parking lot and saw my car vandalized with a swastika and a Star of David with the words 'is illegal.' In instances like these, it reminds us that there is unfortunately still much darkness in this world."

After assuring people the incident had been reported to authorities, he wrote on Facebook that "the Rebbe [Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson] taught us that our response to such a situation is to redouble our efforts in doing good, to bring more light into the world. With that being said, I ask you to join me in doing another mitzvah," asking that people give money to charity, for men to put on tefillin or, as it was Friday, for women to light Shabbat candles.

On Twitter, Jewish groups rallied around Levitansky.

"We stand with the Chabad rabbi at Santa Monica College against this despicable attack, meant to insult and intimidate a Jewish person," wrote CEO of StandWithUs Roz Rothstein.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which is based in Los Angeles, tweeted: "Despicable acts of anti-Semitism meant to demonize and degrade Jews. Thanks to Chabad rabbis on SMC's campus and around the world who lead by example to never be cowered by hate, but to always be proud Jews and lovers of Zion."

Police officers were looking into the matter.

On Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for the current government to be dissolved with new elections to be held on Sept. 20. Among those running for re-election are current ministers of Parliament Rachel Bendayan and Anthony Housefather, both of Montreal. It was their banners that were defaced.

"It is absolutely sickening to see this vile antisemitism targeting Jewish election candidates," said Michael Levitt, president and CEO of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center. "There's no place for this Jew-hatred in the city of Montreal or anywhere else in Canada. This symbol of hate and genocide must be rejected by all Canadians, regardless of where one stands on the political spectrum."

Reactions came swiftly from the candidates, who on Tuesday posted photos of the vandalized posters online.

Housefather, a Parliament member for Mount Royal, wrote on Twitter: "Pretty sad to see antisemitism hitting the campaign on Day 3. I can assure whoever did this that no swastika is going to scare me or stop me from speaking up for Jewish Canadians."

"Whatever your political views, spreading hateful and violent messages is not the way to go," Bendayan posted on social media. "We've seen the road that the politics of the far-right leads us to in the US and around the world. That is not us. That is not our Canada."

The vandalism comes as Canada deals with high numbers of antisemitic incidents.

"Disgusted by the targeting of Jewish candidates with the most vile of antisemitic symbols of hatred – swastikas," tweeted Irwin Colter, founder and chair of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights. "There is no room for such antisemitic hate in Canada, or anywhere, and certainly not in a democratic electoral process."

Also concerned about the vandalism is Trudeau, whose government recently held a forum on antisemitism in the country and promised to do more to protect Canadian Jews.

"It is completely unacceptable," Trudeau wrote on Twitter. "I stand in solidarity with Rachel and Anthony, and the entire Jewish community, against this type of hatred."

It is yet another case of anti-Semitism in Ukraine in the past several weeks.

In September, for instance, unidentified criminals desecrated a monument dedicated to the Jews who perished in a massacre in Bogdanovka village in the Nikolayev region.

The attackers this week spray-painted a swastika in red and left a note with threats to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former transportation minister Yevhen Chervonenko, who are Jewish; and head of Ukrainian Jewish Committee Eduard Dolinsky.

Haim Ben-Yakov, CEO of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, addressed the Ukrainian government, saying "to our great dismay, recently we have been witnessing an increasing number of anti-Semitic incidents all across Ukraine. The country's law-enforcement agencies must do everything possible to find and prosecute the criminals. Desecration of monuments is an alarming symptom of a troubling condition, which can develop into a more acute form."

"It is urgent that we act promptly and decisively in order to avert further escalation of anti-Semitic sentiment in the country," he stressed.

On Nov. 27, Kiev will host the first Summit of Euroasian Jewry, bringing hundreds of Jewish leaders from across the region together for the first time.

"We are very concerned by the placing of fliers on the Arizona State University campus with a swastika over the weekend. Use of this hate symbol is not normal. We condemn its use to promote hate and divisiveness. We are in contact with law enforcement to find out more to ensure the safety and security of students," posted ADL Arizona on Facebook.

ADL Arizona added that it has been in contact with Hillel and Chabad on campus.

"We are deeply concerned about the recent anti-Semitic fliers posted around campus, some depicting references to the Holocaust. The fliers trivialize one of the darkest periods in history in which more than six million Jews were killed," posted ASU Hillel on Facebook. "Like you, we believe this message has no place on our campus. We are proud to work with you to make Jewish life on campus stronger every day, and an isolated incident such as this one will not deter us."

"We are disturbed and bothered by the recent anti-Semitic fliers on campus," Rabbi Shmuel Tiechtel, director of the Rohr Chabad House at ASU, told Jewish News Syndicate. "We've spoken with dozens of students since the incident, and many are frustrated and concerned, and we share their feelings. We are here to listen to and to support the students at all times."

In a statement, ASU said it knows about the posters as first reported on Friday by a student.

"Ensuring the safety and security of our students is our top priority, and the university undertakes extensive efforts to ensure student safety is not compromised," said the statement. "ASU is a place where open debate can thrive and honest disagreements can be explored, but not when hateful rhetoric is used. That is not who we are."

Out of a total student body of 51,585, there are an estimated 3,800 Jewish students at ASU, or 7.4% of the student population, according to Hillel International.

The University of Indianapolis has launched an investigation after two Jewish sisters from Israel found swastikas drawn inside their dormitory room just after arriving on campus for the fall term.

Michal Sasson said she and her twin sister, Shira, were still carrying their suitcases when they discovered two pinkish-red swastikas Monday night on a wall in their room at Roberts Hall. She said the shocking find "was like a kick in my stomach" and that she and her sister were scared.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

"I just said: 'We're miles and miles away from home, and this is our home away from home,'" Sasson told The Indianapolis Star. "And at that moment, I felt even further away from my house. I just felt like I was excluded, and it was very painful."

The sisters, who are juniors, have attended the private university on Indianapolis' south side for the past two years. Both play basketball for the college, which is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

School officials said in a statement that they're "saddened and angered by this act of hate and bigotry" and are investigating.

"Although we do not yet know the source of this anti-Semitic act, we should all be reminded that the University of Indianapolis is a welcoming and inclusive environment, denounces actions such as these, and does not tolerate anti-Semitic actions or any behavior that is aligned with ideologies that promote hate," the statement said.

The university's probe will include tracking down everyone who rented campus housing over the summer or had access to the sisters' room.

School spokeswoman Sara Galer told The Associated Press that she didn't know whether the sisters were assigned to that same dorm room during the last school year.

Galer said the swastikas were apparently drawn with a type of pink eraser. "If you rub an eraser on a wall it leaves a mark. It was like that," she said.

Michal Sasson said the love and support she and her sibling have received from friends, family and school employees have made the situation easier. She said the university also booked them an off-campus hotel room for a few nights.

"I'm very pleased at the way they're handling it," she said.

The Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council said it appreciates the college's quick action and its statement condemning anti-Semitic acts.

"In these difficult times we ask that everyone continue to report hateful symbols and speech meant to intimidate or spread fear to the proper authorities," the council's assistant director, David Sklar, said in a statement.
