Turkish law enforcement has dismantled a sophisticated credit card fraud operation in the popular coastal resort of Kuşadası, leading to the arrest of 20 individuals, including the suspected mastermind H.Ö, who operates a local hotel. The Turkish news site T24 reported the breakthrough in the case.

Preliminary investigations reveal that a minimum of 268 international tourists were victimized by this elaborate scheme, resulting in financial losses approaching $30 million. The criminal enterprise generated revenues exceeding 1.1 billion Turkish lira ($37 million). The fraud network employed "smurfing" tactics – a technique involving numerous small-value credit transfers to various member accounts – designed to complicate law enforcement tracking efforts.

The criminal organization funneled its ill-gotten gains through a complex web of shell corporations while laundering proceeds via both fraudulent entities and legitimate businesses used as fronts. These funds were systematically invested in real estate acquisitions, which were subsequently sold to convert assets back into liquid cash. The criminal investigation was initiated when a state-owned bank detected suspicious account activity among international clients and alerted regulatory authorities.

Several suspects maintained operations from international locations, systematically harvesting credit card information from citizens across multiple nations. Law enforcement agencies executed simultaneous raids across 27 locations throughout Aydın, Muğla, İzmir, Antalya, and Istanbul, targeting the criminal network's membership. Investigators conducted comprehensive technical and physical surveillance of the suspects over a four-month period before executing the arrests.

During the investigation, authorities uncovered fraudulent transactions at payment processing terminals within two Kuşadası hotels. Intelligence suggests the operation's leader distributed stolen card information to fellow conspirators at these locations.

Following tourists' departures, unauthorized recurring charges appeared on victims' credit cards, disguised as legitimate service fees. These transactions occurred without the victim's knowledge or authorization, with all proceeds flowing directly to the criminal network.

Double-check your attraction ticket sources before booking: Spain leads the disreputable list of destinations where tourists have fallen victim to fraud. According to research by Go.compare, which analyzed data from multiple countries, Spain emerged as the primary destination among the top ten locations where travelers have been duped.

In Spain, 1,054,729 tourists fell victim to fraud over the past five years. In a country that welcomed 94 million visitors in 2024, one in every 61 tourists was caught in swindlers' traps. The research, which examined complaint findings about scams, revealed that following Spain are France, the US, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Cyprus.

For example, one in ten visitors, or more specifically 212,000 travelers who visited France over the past five years reported being "ripped off," while 153,000 tourists fell victim to scams in the US during the same period.

Tourists in Paris are cautioned against websites selling fraudulent admission tickets to museums and popular attractions in the French capital. Among the tourist hotspots where scammers operate is Notre Dame Cathedral, which recently reopened. Tourists are falsely told they can pay up to 60 euros for "fast track" tickets allowing them to bypass long queues, when in fact admission is entirely free.

What protective measures can travelers take? When planning your visit, it's advisable to book flights and leisure activities exclusively through trustworthy websites. Those who suspect they've fallen for a scam should report the incident to local authorities and immediately notify their bank or credit card providers. Additionally, if necessary, embassies or consulates can assist with canceling or replacing lost documents. When needed, travelers should file claims through their travel insurance. Depending on the policy terms, travelers may be covered for financial losses or other problems resulting from fraud.

In the coming days, Israel and the United Arab Emirates are expected to discuss the creation of an "open corridor" for people who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported on Friday.

According to the report, the agreement will allow vaccinated individuals to travel freely between the two countries without the need for a coronavirus test, isolation, or any other restrictions.

The sides agreed that a shared open corridor for tourists will bolster the mutual progress already enabled by Abraham Accords and help both countries' economies.

If the agreement is authorized, the UAE will be the second country after Georgia to allow vaccinated Israelis to enter.

Meanwhile, in a further sign that the country's robust vaccination campaign was paying dividends, the Israeli government was leaning toward lifting other travel restrictions that will likely include allowing Israelis to visit the Sinai Peninsula.

If approved, the Taba border crossing could be opened as early as before the Passover holiday (March 27-April 3). It still wasn't clear whether non-vaccinated Israelis will be allowed to leave the country and return. In all likelihood, quick testing stations will be set up at the Taba crossing.

Tourism Minister Orit Farkash Hacohen said: "After the decision was made to open the skies, I think it's very important to allow people to leave [the country], not just for Israelis who are financially able to visit Seychelles but other places for the entire public."

The government is expected to decide on the matter before March 20.

A 19-year-old British woman pleaded not guilty Tuesday in a Cyprus court to a public mischief charge for making what prosecutors say was a false claim that she was raped by 12 Israeli teenagers at a holiday resort on the east Mediterranean island nation.

A judge set the start of the trial for Oct. 2 and released the woman on bail, finding it "proper and fair" to free her after she had spent nearly two months in police detention.

The woman surrendered her travel documents to police and must appear at a Nicosia police station three times weekly. She has also been placed on a stop list, prohibiting her departure. She posted bail of 5,000 euros ($5,500) in cash, while her father who was present in the courtroom guaranteed a bond of 15,000 euros ($16,600).

Her defense lawyers say that investigators used "oppression" to make her retract the allegation that she was gang-raped at an Ayia Napa hotel last month. Cypriot authorities strongly deny that the retraction was coerced, saying that she volunteered the statement in writing.

"The teenager's case is that she has not lied about being raped and the oppression was used by the Cypriot police in order to get her to retract her rape allegations," said Michael Polak, director of the group Justice Abroad which is assisting in the woman's legal defense.

"The purported retraction is unreliable because of what happened in the police station."

Polak said the defense team will present evidence at trial that the woman had not lied about being raped.

Five Israelis were initially freed on July 25 after no evidence was found linking them to the case. The remaining seven were released three days later after police said that the woman retracted the rape allegations.

Polak called the case a "test" of the Cypriot legal system's adherence to Cypriot and European conventions and said that defense lawyers would ask Cyprus Attorney General Costas Clerides to drop the case "after considering the facts."

The British woman's legal expenses are being funded by donations raised on an online platform.
