Officials are looking into the possible connection between the Las Vegas explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck and an attack that left 15 dead in New Orleans, President Joe Biden said in a Wednesday evening address to the nation.

One person was killed and seven suffered minor injuries when a Tesla Cybertruck exploded Wednesday morning in front of the entrance to Trump International, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said at a news conference.

The person who died was in the Cybertruck, and McMahill said it was unclear if it was a man or a woman.

According to Jeremy Schwartz, acting special agent in charge for the FBI's Las Vegas office, authorities also are trying to determine whether the explosion was an act of terrorism but believe it was an "isolated incident."

McMahill acknowledged the possible political implications.

"It's a Tesla truck, and we know that Elon Musk is working with President-elect (Donald) Trump and it's the Trump tower, so there's obviously things to be concerned about there, and it's something we continue to look at," he said.

Police were told the truck pulled up to the hotel entrance and emitted smoke, which was followed by a large explosion, McMahill said. He played a drone video for reporters that showed gasoline canisters, camp fuel cans and firework mortars in the bed of the truck.

The hotel was evacuated, and many guests went to Resorts World, he said. According to a spokesperson for Clark County, two people were taken to a hospital. Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Billy Samuels later said they had been released.

Ties to New Orleans attack?

Biden was briefed on the explosion, which happened hours after a driver crashed a truck into a crowd in New Orleans' French Quarter early New Year's Day, killing 15 people before being fatally shot by police.

The truck that exploded in Las Vegas and the truck used in New Orleans were both rented from the Turo app, a "coincidence" authorities will continue to examine, McMahill said.

Biden said the driver who committed the New Orleans attack, a US Army veteran whose truck carried the Islamic State group's flag, had posted videos on social media before the attack in which he said he was inspired by the Islamic State and wanted to kill.

McMahill said authorities are investigating the possibility of a connection between the two events but have not found any indication that the Las Vegas explosion was tied to IS.

"We're very well aware of what has happened in New Orleans with the event that occurred there and the number of victims there and the additional IDs, so, as you can imagine, with an explosion here on iconic Las Vegas Boulevard, we are taking all of the precautions that we need to take to keep our community safe," he said. "We're looking for secondary devices. We're taking it slow."

He said there does not appear to be any additional threat.

The truck was rented from Turo in Colorado and arrived in Las Vegas around 7:30 a.m., according to McMahill. He said it drove up and down Las Vegas Boulevard before pulling into the Trump property.

McMahill said officials know who rented the truck but are not ready to release an identification until they are positive about the name and have notified family.

A Wednesday statement attributed to a Turo spokesman said the company is "heartbroken by the violence perpetrated in New Orleans and Las Vegas, and our prayers are with the victims and families."

"We are actively partnering with law enforcement authorities as they investigate both incidents," the statement continued. "We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards in risk management, thanks to our world-class trust and safety technologies and teams that include experienced former law enforcement professionals."

In a post on X on Wednesday afternoon, Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote: "The whole Tesla senior team is investigating this matter right now. … We've never seen anything like this."

In a later post, he wrote, "We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself."

What witnesses saw

Oscar Terol, who was visiting Las Vegas from Barcelona, Spain, and staying at the hotel, said he saw the explosion through the lobby windows. The force was so strong it knocked him down, he said.

He said he saw what looked like fireworks and heard a series of booms.

The fire was reported just after 8:40 a.m. at 2000 Fashion Show Drive, according to the Clark County Fire Department's PulsePoint app.

Fashion Show Drive was closed in both directions from Sammy Davis Jr. Drive to Las Vegas Boulevard South, according to the Regional Transportation Commission's X account.

Ana Bruce, who was visiting from Brazil, said she heard three explosions.

"The first one where we saw the fire, the second one, I guess, was the battery or something like that, and the third was the big one that smoked the entire area and was the moment when everyone was told to evacuate and stay away," Bruce said.

Her travel companion, Alcides Antunes, took a video that showed flames on the sides of the silver vehicle.

Mike Campbell, a guest at the hotel, said he heard a loud boom that shook the windows of the tower. When he took the elevator to pick up his car around 9:15 a.m., it smelled like paint thinner, he said.

'The smoke was terrible'

Tom and Debra Miller, visiting from Iowa, were in the elevator on the opposite side of Trump tower when the explosion went off. They were evacuated quickly and had not able to return as of 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Debra Miller said the couple spoke to a man who was having breakfast in the lobby when the explosion went off.

"It blew him out of his seat, he said. The smoke was terrible. I don't know if it was the battery, but I can still smell it on me," she said. "I'm just thankful they didn't do it on the Strip last night when everybody was out."

Access points to the parking garages for the Fashion Show mall were blocked by police Wednesday, but multiple people who were inside shopping had no idea an explosion had even occurred. Guests interviewed at Resorts World, which is located near Trump International, didn't know about the explosion, either.

Eric Trump, a son of Trump and executive vice president of the Trump Organization, posted about the fire on X, praising the Fire Department and local law enforcement "for their swift response and professionalism."

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will lay out the choices for Nevada this November at an outdoor rally on Sunday in Las Vegas, and sweltering heat is forecast for the event.

The rally, held two days before Nevada's June 11 primary, is scheduled for noon in Sunset Park, 2601 Sunset Road, with access to the public three hours earlier. The National Weather Service is forecasting 89-degree temperatures when gates open at 9 am, rising to 99 by noon before topping out later that afternoon at 102.

Karoline Leavitt, the campaign's national press secretary, said in an email, "In anticipation of the hot temperature in Las Vegas on Sunday, we will have ample water available, misting fans, and cooling tents. We also worked with the United States Secret Service to make exceptions for guests to bring their own water bottles and purse-size umbrellas through security."

Nevada's event isn't the only rally recently that is being held in the desert heat. At a Turning Point rally in Phoenix on Thursday that featured Trump, 11 people were sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion while waiting outside.

Trump's visit to the Silver State comes just over a week after he was found guilty of 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records, becoming the first former president convicted of a felony. Following that verdict, Trump's presidential bid hasn't seemed to falter. His campaign and the Republican National Committee announced a $141 million fundraising haul in May, which the campaign says shows support for Trump while facing what it called the "sham Biden trial." The campaign reported it raised $53 million online in the 24 hours after the guilty verdict was read, noting that 25% of the donors in May were brand new to the 2024 campaign.

Polls consistently show Trump ahead of Biden in Nevada, even though the current president won the Silver State in 2020 by more than 30,000 votes. A Fox News poll released Thursday and conducted June 1 through June 4 shows more Nevadans said they trust Trump to do a better job on the Israel-Hamas war, the economy, and the border.

Ahead of his visit to the Silver State, Trump has made multiple announcements regarding Nevada, encouraging Nevadans to get out and vote in the June 11 primary. He also made an endorsement in Nevada's 4th Congressional District, backing former North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee. Trump has yet to endorse in the key Senate race that could determine party control of the Senate. In a crowded primary field, nationally backed Sam Brown and Dr. Jeff Gunter, former ambassador to Iceland under the Trump administration, have been vying for Trump's support.

Ahead of Trump's visit to the Silver State, Democratic leaders and organizations warned of what another Trump presidency would look like. "We are standing here today together to make it clear before Donald Trump comes to Las Vegas that we will not stand for four more years of failed promises, of anti-worker schemes, or of Trump's billionaire-first scams," said Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno at a press conference Friday with local union workers.

In a press call on Thursday, Democratic Assemblyman Howard Watts discussed actions Trump took as president relating to the environment, such as backing out of the Paris Climate Agreement and giving tax breaks to big oil companies. Biden, on the other hand, has taken more than 320 climate actions and is working to save families money on their energy bills, Watts said. "President Biden has by far done more to cut pollution, protect our environment, and promote our clean energy economy than any US president ever. Trump is out of touch with what our community needs and is the wrong choice for Nevada," Watts said.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman and CEO Sheldon G. Adelson, who died Monday night, was remembered Tuesday morning by leaders and others who recalled his business acumen, love of country as well as his philanthropy, with many noting his relentless efforts to safeguard the future of Israel and the Jewish people.

— Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he and his wife  Sara were "heartbroken by the passing of Sheldon Adelson. He was a wonderful friend to us personally and an incredible champion of the Jewish people, the Jewish state and the alliance between Israel and America."

The statement further said: "Sheldon unabashedly loved America and cherished the freedom and opportunity it gave him. He worked tirelessly to ensure that very same freedom and opportunity would be given to others in America and around the world.

"The warmth of his heart, the clarity of his thinking and the decisiveness of his actions were truly exceptional.

"From humble beginnings in a suburb of Boston, he rose to be one of world's greatest entrepreneurs and philanthropists.  With his wife Miri he contributed endlessly to strengthening the Jewish people and the Jewish state, funding breakthroughs in medicine and science and advancing higher education. He gave anonymously to help victims of terror and countless other people in need. Sara and I join Miri and the family in mourning a great friend, a great man, and a great Jewish patriot. We will never forget him. May his memory be blessed."

— US President Donald Trump said "Sheldon lived the true American dream. His ingenuity, genius, and creativity earned him immense wealth, but his character and philanthropic generosity his great name. ... Sheldon was true to his family, his country, and all those that knew him. The world has lost a great man. He will be missed."

— US Vice President Mike Pence said: "When Abner fell, King David said, 'Do you not know that a leader and a great man has fallen in Israel this day?' Sheldon Adelson was a leader and a great man, whose legacy will inspire generations for years to come."

— Former US President George W. Bush said Adelson "battled his way out of a tough Boston neighborhood to build a successful enterprise that loyally employed tens of thousands – and entertained millions. He was an American patriot, a generous benefactor of charitable causes, and a strong supporter of Israel. Sheldon was a generous benefactor of charitable causes, especially medical research and Jewish heritage education. He will be missed by many – none more than his beloved family."

— Former US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada: "Few people have had such significant an impact on the hotel and gaming industry and on Nevada's economy as Sheldon Adelson. He came to Las Vegas as a master of the convention business. Adelson became one of Nevada's giants in gaming, conventions and hospitality. He was instrumental in transforming Las Vegas into the iconic destination it is today.

"He also left an indelible impact on Asia, where he brought Las Vegas-style resorts to people in the Far East, helping to build the thriving international gaming market that exists today.

"In the nearly four decades that I've known him, Sheldon Adelson has been outspoken with causes important to him. His advocacy for the state of Israel and Jewish causes was without equal and made a difference in countless lives both at home and abroad.

"Landra and I offer our condolences to Miriam and the entire Adelson family."

— Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak: "I was very saddened to hear of Sheldon Adelson's passing. Sheldon was a man who believed in, succeeded in, and invested in bold and daring ideas that changed the State of Nevada.

"He came from very humble beginnings and rose to international prominence as an entrepreneur, a builder, and a philanthropist. He started as a customer, by building the preeminent computer convention in the world hosted by Las Vegas. He saw an opportunity, which many dismissed, and built the first convention center and resort complex on the Las Vegas Strip.

"His vision of Vegas as a premier business destination had a dramatic impact, as other resorts adopted this new business model and conventions and business have become a critical part of our success.

"Sheldon led the charge to bring the NFL to Las Vegas, and largely through his determination and leadership, we are now the home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

"There is no doubt that the Adelson family has been among Nevada's most charitable residents. From programs to help the homeless and hungry, support for our universities and schools, developing addiction clinics, building the Adelson School, the family's generosity has touched every corner of our State.

"For me, in these difficult times, one act stands above all. Despite suffering significant economic losses due to the global pandemic, the shutdowns and limited business, due to mitigation protocols, Sheldon made a commitment to keep all of his Las Vegas employees paid and insured. That commitment helped keep thousands of Nevadans afloat during the most difficult of months, and Sheldon's commitment will never be forgotten.

"Kathy and I extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Adelson, his children and all of his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time."

— Carolyn Goodman, mayor of Las Vegas, said on Twitter: "Beyond the public image and Horatio Alger rise, Sheldon Adelson took Las Vegas to a new level of tourism and success by bringing COMDEX(CES) into reality and building a resort empire. Mr. Adelson was a caring and religious man who quietly changed lives through his enormous philanthropy."

— Aaron Ford, Nevada attorney general, said in a statement: "Sheldon Adelson is a man who has served our community in many ways: he was a pioneer in the casino and convention industry, a skilled businessman, and a philanthropist who funded a school, medical research, and countless other causes.

"A man not born into wealth and privilege, Mr. Adelson was the son of immigrants who grew up sleeping on the floor of his family apartment in Boston. By the age of 12, he owned his first business and looked to the future with big dreams and a work ethic to match. By the end of his life, he had amassed over 50 companies.

"Mr. Adelson was a man who worked hard to further religious causes. His work within and for the Jewish community is world renowned and will be a legacy for generations. And after the death of George Floyd, he invited me to discuss race issues with his employees to foster unity within our community, resulting in Sands-sponsored programs in the community to improve race relations. I will be forever grateful for that.

"Through his deeds, Mr. Adelson has left a lasting mark on our community, and our Nevada family is grateful for his contributions. To his wife, Miriam, his children Gary, Mitchell and Shelley, and to all of his friends and family, I extend my deepest condolences."

— House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said: "Today the world mourns the loss of one of the greatest, most generous businessmen in history.

"His life made him a fearless advocate for freedom and entrepreneurship and a source of counsel and support to a generation of conservatives, including me."

— Donald Trump Jr., the president's son, said: "Sheldon was a true American patriot and a giant among men. He treated his employees like family. His philanthropic generosity changed countless lives. The US-Israel relationship is stronger today because of him. My heart goes out to the Adelson family."

— Nikki Haley, former US Ambassador to the UN, said on Twitter: "Sheldon Adelson lived a true American life. Born from humble beginnings he achieved extraordinary things. He was a defender of America, a champion of Israel and a friend. His good deeds and legacy will continue to shape the lives of millions."

— Josh Holmes, former chief of staff and campaign manager to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, said on Twitter: "It's impossible to fully capture what a titan Sheldon Adelson was in every aspect of life. He was a genuine Horacio Alger story who pioneered his industry and changed Las Vegas. He was as selfless and philanthropic as anyone I've ever met. He was a hero."

— Congressman Steven Horsford said in a statement: "Sheldon Adelson left an undeniable mark on Las Vegas. Through his vast philanthropic efforts, he created new educational opportunities for Southern Nevada's children and helped thousands of teens and adults struggling with opioid addiction overcome their illness. His legacy will live on through the Adelson Educational Campus and the Adelson Clinic, and Nevadans will continue to benefit from his generosity. I send my condolences to the entire Adelson family during their time of grief."

— Bill Miller, president and CEO of the American Gaming Association, said in an email: "Today's passing of Sheldon Adelson is a tremendous loss to the gaming community. Mr. Adelson, founder and chairman of Las Vegas Sands, was a true visionary and pioneer of modern casino gaming for more than three decades. From Las Vegas and Pennsylvania to Macao and Singapore, his mark is indelible.

"I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Adelson for more than 15 years, long before joining the American Gaming Association (AGA). It is his leadership and generosity that stand out the most to me. There's no greater example of this than serving his community and prioritizing his employees' well-being during the last year as our country and industry grappled with the global pandemic.

"On behalf of the AGA, I share our deepest sympathies with Dr. Adelson, the Adelson family, and our gaming colleagues at Las Vegas Sands. May his memory be a blessing."

— John T. Moran Jr., chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission, said in a text: "As a young attorney I remember watching Sheldon as he built his incredible empire in Las Vegas. He was a visionary and became one of the solid and important foundational blocks of the gaming industry. He always took care of his employees and recognized they were the important backbone of his gaming business.

"He was a wonderful leader in gaming but also the community he loved. He will be sorely missed in these troubling difficult times."

— Former US House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement: "Sheldon Adelson, born into a family of limited means in Boston during the Great Depression, started his first business at the age of 12 and never stopped working, building, and creating. He was an entrepreneur who believed deeply in the American Dream and free enterprise, and felt a responsibility to use the fruits of his work to do what he believed was necessary to help keep those things alive for others.

"We didn't agree on everything, but there was never any doubt about the strength of his commitment to opportunity, or the generosity of his spirit, and he always had my respect. I offer my sincere condolences to Miriam, his family, and his organization on his passing."

— US Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto said in a statement: "Sheldon Adelson's vision helped transform Las Vegas from a small desert city into a world-class tourism destination. The Silver State's massive business, entertainment, and convention industries are what they are today because of his life's work and his dedication to building a Las Vegas that can cater to everyone from entrepreneurs to international travelers. My thoughts are with his family during this time."

— Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said in a text: "Sheldon was a visionary entrepreneur and played a pivotal role, as both a customer and then as a resort developer, in establishing Las Vegas as the preeminent convention and meeting destination in the world. He also saw the promise of what a premiere stadium would mean to this city and was the driving force behind that project. On behalf of the LVCVA, I wish to express my deepest sympathies to Dr. Adelson, their children and grandchildren, and to the entire Las Vegas Sands family."

— US Sen. Jacky Rosen said in a statement: "I am saddened to hear of the passing of Sheldon Adelson. Sheldon and Miriam's efforts to combat addiction and substance abuse in the Silver State changed the lives of many. As Jewish leaders, we also shared a deep concern for the rise in anti-Semitism and joined efforts to help combat hate. My thoughts are with Dr. Miriam Adelson and Sheldon's entire family during this difficult time."

Sheldon Adelson, who rose from selling newspapers on Boston street corners at age 12 to one of the most successful luxury resort developers, philanthropists and political influencers of his generation, died Monday night at his home in Malibu, California. He was 87.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

Adelson founded and served as Chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp., the world's largest gaming corporation, from its inception in 1988.

Under Adelson's leadership, Las Vegas Sands pioneered the integrated resort model that now dominates the Strip, combining luxury hotel-casinos with convention centers. Adelson's concept was so popular and financially successful that he became one of the world's wealthiest people.

Adelson shared that wealth as a generous philanthropist. Along with his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, he underwrote medical research, a private school, drug rehabilitation clinics, and numerous other causes.

Adelson's conservative values, love for the United States and Israel, and his desire to preserve the strongest diplomatic and cultural ties possible between the nations compelled him to embrace and support Jewish causes. He became one of America's most influential political megadonors, contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to Republican candidates and conservative PACs over the past two decades.

Adelson also was unfailingly loyal to the thousands of people he employed.

After the coronavirus pandemic forced Nevada casinos to shutter in March 2020, Adelson continued providing full pay and benefits to all 10,000 Las Vegas Sands Corp. employees and the 1,200 employees working in the resorts' 14 independently operated restaurants throughout the closure.

Sheldon Adelson was a unique combination: a philanthropist, a devout Zionist, and a true fighter for Israel, and a person who was wholeheartedly determined to safeguard the future of the Jewish people.

His connection to Israel can be traced all the way back to his childhood in Boston, to a poor Jewish family. His father, who arrived in the US from Lithuania as a child, always told him that his fervent wish was to visit the Jewish state.

His father never made it, but when his son arrived in Israel shortly after his death several decades later, the younger Adelson decided to symbolically wear his father's shoes as he disembarked the plane.

For Adelson, who passed away after a long illness on Tuesday, it was clear that the future of the Jewish people should never be taken for granted.

A lot has been said about how Adelson became one of the wealthiest persons in the world. Most Israelis probably don't know just how much Adelson and his wife Dr. Miriam Adelson contributed to their lives on so many levels.

His donations to various projects in Israel and the Jewish world are enormous in scope and reach.

Every young Jew knows about Taglit-Birthright, which has brought hundreds of thousands of Jews on a 10-day tour to Israel thanks to the hundreds of millions of dollars Adelson gave through his foundation.

He also played a major role in establishing new faculties and schools in Israeli academia, expanding their access to many Israelis, including a new medical school at the Ariel University of Samaria. He was also one of the main donors to Israel's leading first-responder organization Magen David Adom and the national Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem.

Adelson played a significant role in the attempt to make Israel join the club of nations that have landed a spacecraft on the moon, funding a substantial part of the SPACEIL project to send Beresheet into space. While the craft ultimately crashed, it nevertheless brought the Israeli flag to the moon, thus providing the young boy from Boston a symbolic victory over the anti-Semites.

Adelson's activities to promote Israel's stance and advance the Zionist cause went beyond philanthropy. He was actively engaged in making Israel's case with world powers to make sure Israel was an economic powerhouse and a secure place for all Jews.

One of his key efforts over the years was in trying to convince the US and other nations to recognize Israel's capital. This ultimately bore fruit in December 2017 when President Donald J. Trump declared Jerusalem as Israel's capital and later moved the US Embassy there.

"My heart is in Israel, and Israel is always in my heart. I am a devout Zionist," Adelson said during an Israel Hayom event several years ago.

Adelson played a major role in creating a new platform for Israeli abroad to feel connected by supporting the Israeli-American Council. The organization has become a major success, expanding rapidly in North America, and effectively ending the stigma native Israelis have toward former Israelis who had left their country. The IAC has proved to be a force to be reckoned with in defending Israel in legislative chambers by supporting anti-boycott laws. It is doubtful that such action would have been made possible without Adelson's enormous backing.

And of course, every Israeli has read or picked up one of the free copies of Israel Hayom, the paper Adelson founded in 2007 that has transformed Israel's media landscape by offering accessible quality journalism without charge.

Even during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Adelson worked tirelessly to bring Jews to their ancestral homeland. It is thanks to him that dozens of Moroccan Jews arrived in Israel on special flight several months ago, overcoming the many difficulties imposed by the virus that had prevented them from leaving the African country.

His efforts to make Israel's economy a global player were relentless, speaking at every opportunity and every business forum on the need to invest in the country.

"My heart is in Israel, and Israel is always in my heart. I am a devout Zionist," Adelson said during an Israel Hayom event.

Thinking outside of the box will be essential if Las Vegas is going to make it through the coronavirus pandemic.

Hometown Allegiant Travel Co. has come up with an idea that definitely is outside the box.

Allegiant Chief Marketing Officer Scott DeAngelo said Wednesday during the company's second-quarter earnings conference call that it will roll out a new program in August that will attempt to boost business and leisure travel to Las Vegas while meetings and conventions are in a virus-driven hiatus.

The new "Work From Vegas" program is being pitched as "Fly, stay, work, play." What Allegiant will ask consumers is, if you're already working remotely from home, why not work from a fabulous Las Vegas resort suite instead so that you can enjoy its restaurants, nightlife, swimming pools and casino entertainment when you're off the clock?

"What we're hearing from some of our customers in our surveys is they're bored after they have to work from home," DeAngelo said in an interview. "So we thought about working with some of our existing resort partners about developing special packages so that people can fly here, check into the resort, telecommute in their normal workday and then be able to enjoy the amenities that are available to hotel guests."

DeAngelo said Allegiant would start making a push to sell the new packages with all of its resort partners this week, and in late August make some announcements about working with one specific partner going forward. He wouldn't name that partner.

Some of the suites in Las Vegas resorts are equipped for business with large conference tables and desks.

DeAngelo said initially Allegiant would book Work From Vegas packages from any of the airline's nonstop destinations to Las Vegas – and there are 58 cities on that list.

Future efforts will focus on cities with young professional communities, including Oakland, California; Cincinnati; Indianapolis; Rockford, Illinois, near Chicago; and Phoenix.

"We're looking at cities with big populations of professional workers, many of whom have the ability to pick up and go and work somewhere else," he said. "And many families may do it, too, because there are many people out there who feel the pandemic has cheated them out of their vacations."

Another advantage Las Vegas holds is that it is well-wired for internet connectivity.

"A lot of people are dying for a change in scenery," DeAngelo said, "and some of them are getting away to the mountains but find out their cellphone service or internet aren't as reliable. That isn't a problem here."

While Allegiant is often criticized for not having much flexibility in its booking process, the company is expecting travelers to flock to the value proposition offered by a flight-hotel package. Among the deals available on the Allegiant website are a package at the Flamingo for three midweek nights from Cincinnati for $227 round trip and four nights at the MGM Grand from Indianapolis for $340.

Will it work? It's probably too early to tell. But it's an outside-the-box idea that may help some tide over the business customer until conventions come back.

The coronavirus pandemic closed businesses, recreation centers and entertainment venues.

To keep from going stir-crazy, below are a few ways you can stay entertained and productive from home.

Practice yoga

Buy houseplants

Filling your home with houseplants can help you feel better, both physically and emotionally.

They help humidify your space and filter the air by consuming carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.

Star Nursery horticulture adviser and spokesman Paul Noe says houseplants also can help lessen depression and anxiety and that many people find the practice of taking care of plants to be soothing.

Amateur plant owners can start with low-maintenance hanging plants such as light green pothos or spider plant.

Snake plants and mother-in-law's tongue are hardy and can be placed on a floor or table. These houseplants require only water, a room with enough sunlight that one can comfortably read a newspaper and a once-monthly plant food to keep them healthy.

Catch up your streaming queue

With plenty of time on the couch to spare, dig into the movies and series you've been meaning to watch – or haven't seen in a while.

Spending more time at home will give you a better idea of which of your belongings you actually use.

Have an old cellphone gathering dust? A folding table buried in the garage? A pair of jeans you never wear? A folder of documents you don't need?

Now is a time to figure out what you can donate, what you can sell and what may need to be thrown out once and for all.

Pick up a hobby

Staying inside doesn't mean giving up on your interests altogether.

If you have a guitar or keyboard around, YouTube is a great place to start practicing.

Lean into other hobbies by delving into that new stack of books, perfecting a recipe or working through the cabinet of family board games.
