Tens of thousands of Australians took to the streets on Sunday to protest the country's immigration policy, in a series of demonstrations held in major cities across the continent. The protests, which were held under the banner "a march for Australia," deteriorated into violence in several locations, and police were forced to use riot control methods, including tear gas and pepper spray.

The protest in Australia is taking place against the backdrop of growing tensions over national identity and immigration in several countries. In Britain, the "fly the flag" protest recently broke out, a grassroots movement to fly British and English flags in protest of the country's record-breaking illegal immigration. At the same time, huge pro-Palestinian demonstrations have shaken both countries, with calls in some cases for support for terrorism and hatred against Israel.

In Sydney, the country's largest city, between 5,000 and 8,000 protesters gathered wrapped in Australian flags, according to Reuters estimates. The demonstration took place next to the Sydney marathon course, where 35,000 participants ran. Police deployed hundreds of officers across the city, and the event ended "without significant incident," according to a police spokesperson.

In Melbourne, the most serious clashes were recorded when thousands of anti-immigration protesters confronted a counter-protest by left-wing organizations and pro-Palestinian groups. Large police forces were deployed to separate the rival camps, and officers used pepper spray to disperse protesters, according to the Australian network ABC. In Melbourne, Thomas Sewell, a leader of the country's far right who is defined as a neo-Nazi and supports white supremacist ideas, was among the speakers who addressed the protesters.

Marie Watt, the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, issued a strong condemnation of the protests. "We absolutely condemn the march for Australia," she said in an interview with Sky News. "This is not intended to increase social harmony. We do not support rallies aimed at spreading hatred and dividing our community."

The organizers of the protest claim that mass immigration "tore the social fabric that held our communities together," citing damage to local culture, a decrease in wages, traffic congestion, a housing crisis, environmental damage, a burden on infrastructure and hospitals, an increase in crime, and a loss of a sense of community.

"Our country can no longer contain more people, and the government continues to bring more and more in," Glenn Olchin, one of the protesters in Sydney, said in an interview with Reuters. "Our children cannot buy houses, people wait seven hours in hospitals, and there are not enough roads."

Since the war in Gaza began, huge pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been held in major cities in Australia, with some protesters carrying Taliban flags, pictures of Khamenei and Iranian nuclear scientists, and shouting chants such as "death to the IDF." These demonstrations were also attended by politicians, including a member of parliament from the Labor Party and a senator from the Green Party, who called for recognition of a Palestinian state and the imposition of sanctions on Israel.

At the same time, an unprecedented wave of antisemitism is afflicting the country, a wave that has included the burning of synagogues, attacks on Israeli restaurants by masked individuals, and other events. Australia recently revealed that Iran was behind at least some of the attacks, with agents of Iranian origin using local criminals to carry out the arsons, which led to the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador from Canberra.

Reports of explosions across Iran have surged since the conclusion of the war with Israel, and continued Monday morning as an apartment blast in the city of Qom left at least seven people injured. Simultaneously, incidents were also reported near the city of Karaj and in Tehran.

Iranian authorities were quick to label the Qom explosion a "gas leak." The provincial governor stressed that the incident was "not a terrorist act" and urged the public not to spread rumors. According to officials, the injured were taken to hospitals and were in stable condition. However, the explosion caused damage to several apartments and vehicles in the area.

Mohsen Moheimany, a commentator for the opposition outlet Iran International, said: "On the one hand, we're seeing continued explosions in residential buildings and other locations, and the authorities always explain it as a gas leak. But the repetitive nature of this explanation and the similarity between all these incidents is starting to raise doubts among the public, especially since most of these explosions have occurred after the war ended."

Iran has long suffered from major infrastructure problems and safety lapses well before the war. Serious incidents, like the deadly blast at Shahid Rajaee Port that killed dozens, were not uncommon. "Authorities say it's due to the heat and gas leaks. But precisely because these are happening now, right after the war, these explanations only increase public suspicion," Moheimany said.

He added: "Israel has openly said it hasn't finished and will continue operations inside Iran. It also reported having eliminated dozens of senior Iranian officials. Iranian officials are not providing details."

Following Israel's deep intelligence penetration in Iran, the end of the war triggered the regime's efforts to "purge its ranks." Hundreds have been arrested across the country, including minorities and even at random on Tehran's streets. Facilities allegedly linked to UAV production were exposed, and citizens were urged to report anything suspicious. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of Afghan nationals residing in Iran have been deported.

Crews aboard merchant vessels sailing through the Red Sea have recently begun adding unusual notes to their public tracking systems (AIS), in an attempt to avoid attacks by the Houthi terrorist organization in Yemen.

In the wake of Houthi attacks near the entrance to the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, some ships have started broadcasting declarations about the nationality or religion of their crew, such as "All crew Muslim", to make clear they have no connection to Israel.

Video: Direct hit by the Houthis – the sinking of the Greek vessel Eternity C

The move comes after a week in which the Houthis sank two vessels, resuming their attacks after a months-long lull. Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi reiterated the group's policy that any cargo linked to Israel would be barred from passage through the Red Sea. Despite attempts at subterfuge, including claims of Chinese crew members or onboard armed guards, maritime security experts warned that the Houthis' intelligence-gathering capabilities are growing increasingly sophisticated, keeping the risk of being attacked high.

These renewed assaults have sent insurance costs for shipping in the area soaring, more than doubling in just one week. Some insurers have even ceased covering voyages through the Red Sea altogether.

Eight Turkish soldiers were killed in northern Iraq after being exposed to a concentrated build-up of methane gas inside a cave, the Turkish Defense Ministry reported Monday. The soldiers had entered the area as part of an ongoing search for the remains of a Turkish infantry officer killed in a clash with members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The incident occurred on Sunday, when 19 soldiers were exposed to the gas while conducting a search operation inside the cave. Eleven of them were evacuated for medical treatment, while eight died from the exposure. Methane is a colorless, odorless natural gas that can cause asphyxiation in high concentrations.

According to Turkish media reports, security forces have been searching the area for nearly three years for the remains of the officer, who was killed in a firefight with PKK fighters in May 2022. The cave, located 852 meters (2,795 feet) above sea level, had previously been used by the PKK.

A statement from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's office said the soldiers were exposed to "a high concentration of methane gas that had accumulated in the area." The president expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, extended condolences to the families of the victims and the Turkish Armed Forces, and wished a swift recovery to the injured.

Turkey has been engaged in a decades-long conflict with the PKK, which it considers a terrorist organization. The fighting has spread over time into northern Iraq and northern Syria. In May this year, the PKK announced it was laying down arms and disbanding, following a February call by its imprisoned leader Abdullah Öcalan to end the armed struggle. The organization said it had "fulfilled its historic mission."

Zohran Mamdani, known for his socialist and anti-Israeli positions, was elected Wednesday night to be the Democratic Party nominee for New York City mayor, according to the count of most votes. Mamdani, who expressed support for the BDS movement to boycott Israel, defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani, 33, a Muslim New York State Assembly member, leads Cuomo 43.5% to 36.4% after counting nearly 95% of polling stations. Cuomo, who sought to return to the political arena four years after resigning as governor following sexual harassment allegations, delivered a concession speech and acknowledged Mamdani's victory – "Tonight is his night. He deserved it, he won."

Mamdani was born in Uganda to a family of Indian origin and moved to New York at age 7. He is the son of Mahmood Mamdani, an anthropology professor at Columbia University, and Mira Nair, a film director of Indian origin.

Mamdani previously founded a chapter of "Students for Justice in Palestine" at Bowdoin College, supported the boycott movement against Israel (BDS), called for cutting economic ties with Israel, and even declared that if elected mayor, he would refuse to visit Israel – contrary to the tradition of his predecessors in the position. His extreme positions toward Israel have accompanied him throughout his political career, as he refuses to recognize its right to exist as a Jewish state.

Recently, Mamdani sparked controversy when he refused to condemn the call to "globalize the intifada," a slogan associated with anti-Israeli demonstrations and calls for violence against Jews. In a podcast interview, he responded, "Ultimately, what I hear in these expressions is a desperate yearning for equality and human rights for Palestinians," and tried to justify using the term by claiming its meaning in Arabic is "struggle."

His words prompted a harsh backlash from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, which issued an unusual statement – "Exploiting the Museum and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising to sanitize "globalize the intifada" is outrageous and especially offensive to survivors. Since 1987 Jews have been attacked and murdered under its banner. All leaders must condemn its use and the abuse of history." In response to the uproar, Mamdani held a dramatic press conference where he claimed, "It pains me that they call me antisemitic. I love the Jewish community in New York." Recently, it was revealed that in a rap song he published in the past, he expressed support for five convicts who transferred money to Hamas and sent them his "love."

But the core of his campaign focused on his socialist positions – freezing rent on rent-controlled apartments, free public transportation, city-subsidized grocery stores, free early childhood education, and raising the minimum wage to $30 per hour. Mamdani said he would fund this by raising taxes on the wealthy.

In the past, Mamdani supported the movement to defund the police, but in the current campaign, he said he would not cut the budget of law enforcement forces, despite describing the New York Police Department as "racist, anti-LGBTQ community and a major threat to public safety."

The race was seen as an indicator of the direction the Democratic Party should take after the defeat in the presidential and congressional elections. The differences between them were clear – Cuomo, a moderate candidate supported by the party establishment who served about a decade as governor, versus Mamdani, a progressive and radical candidate.

Mamdani is expected to be the favorite in the November mayoral election in the majority-Democratic city. He will face the current mayor, Eric Adams, known for his pro-Israeli positions. Adams, also a Democrat, will run as an independent candidate after corruption scandals and his ties with President Donald Trump made him an outcast in the party.

Mamdani won the support of Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, two prominent figures in the party's progressive wing. In contrast, Cuomo garnered support from former President Bill Clinton and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Los Angeles descended into chaos for a third consecutive night Monday as violent protests over federal immigration enforcement prompted President Donald Trump to authorize an unprecedented deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops, marking the first time since the 1960s that a president has activated the guard without gubernatorial consent, while 500 Marines remain on standby.

The dramatic escalation began after Trump declared that Los Angeles had been "invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals," ordering Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi to "liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion, and put an end to these Migrant riots."

Downtown Los Angeles erupted into violent confrontations as hundreds of protesters battled police with fireworks, stones, and burning vehicles. Officers responded with tear gas, stun grenades, and rubber bullets while autonomous Google vehicles were torched in the streets. The chaos forced police to declare all of downtown an "unlawful assembly" – a significant expansion from earlier restrictions limited to the federal detention center area.

Highway 101, the vital artery connecting Los Angeles to San Francisco, suffered extended blockades by protesters, with some lanes remaining closed due to debris. The violence reached international attention when Australian 9News reporter Lauren Tomasi was struck by police rubber bullets during a live television broadcast.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell, who had previously opposed National Guard deployment, acknowledged that Monday's violence warranted "reassessment" after reporting 10 new arrests to add to the 29 from Saturday and dozens from Friday.

The confrontation intensified when California Governor Gavin Newsom directly challenged Trump's authority, declaring the military deployment "illegal" and formally demanding its cancellation. In a defiant MSNBC interview, Newsom accused Trump of manufacturing the crisis while issuing a direct challenge to "immigration czar" Tom Homan, saying, "Tom, arrest me. Let's get started." He characterized Trump's actions as those of "a dictator, not a president."

Trump, speaking from Camp David, branded the protesters "violent paid insurgents" while the FBI offered a $50,000 reward for information about suspects who injured officers. Of the 2,000 troops authorized, approximately 300 from the 79th Guard Brigade are already operational, according to the governor's office, while US Northern Command confirmed 500 Marines are in "on high alert."

The unprecedented federal intervention has drawn international attention, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has attempted to maintain diplomatic relations with Trump, stating that "we won't solve the immigration problem with raids and violence." Mayor Karen Bass condemned the violence while blaming Trump for creating "completely unnecessary chaos."

The crisis represents the sharpest test yet of the power struggle between Trump's immigration enforcement agenda and sanctuary cities like Los Angeles that refuse federal cooperation. The president had pledged during his campaign to force such cities into compliance with federal immigration laws, setting the stage for this historic confrontation between federal authority and local resistance.

Carrying an aura of cuteness like no other baby pigmy hippopotamus, two-month-old Moo-Deng is drawing in more traffic to Thailand's Khao Kheow Open Zoo than ever before.

Moo Deng, Thai for "bouncing pig," catapulted to fame when videos of the bouncy bovine went viral on social media just around two weeks ago. Many of the videos were filmed by her keeper, Atthapon Nundee, who captured some of their interactions, particularly when Moo Deng's rubbery hippo body bounces when reacting to the keepers' touch.

"I've been filming her from day one till day 15 and I pushed out that clip that got over 20 million views. "I expected that she would gain some fame but I didn't expect she'd be this famous," Atthapon told Reuters on Monday.

Moo Deng's TikTok account now has 2.6 million followers, and her fame has grown way beyond the walls of her enclosure, where she has inspired artwork and confectionary creations by die-hard fans. Recently, cosmetics retailer Sephora Thailand started featuring Moo Deng in promotions for blush products with the tagline "Wear your blush like a baby hippo."

According to the zoo's director, Narungwit Chodchoy, the zoo currently sees 3-4,000 visitors per weekday, in contrast to the usually modest number of around 800 at this time of year. And for weekends, they're getting around 10,000 per day, as opposed to the usual 4-5,000.

On Monday, dozens of fans were crowding around Moo Deng's enclosure to glimpse the baby hippo celebrity. "I left home in Bangkok from 6:30 AM this morning to see Moo Deng. I'm here just to see her," said Ekaphak Mahasawad, a tourist from Bangkok.

The pink-cheeked baby hippo was born with two other siblings, the Thai names of which translate to "Pork Stew" and "Sweet Pork." She is also the granddaughter of 59-year-old female hippo "Malee" who just celebrated her birthday at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo and is Thailand's oldest hippo in captivity.

Romanian police raided the home of internet personality Andrew Tate on Wednesday as part of a new investigation into crimes including human trafficking and money laundering, the influencer's representatives said.

A self-described misogynist, Tate has gained millions of fans by promoting an ultra-masculine lifestyle that critics say denigrates women.

"Although the allegations in the search warrant are not yet fully clarified, they include suspicions of human trafficking and money laundering," Tate's representatives said in a statement on Wednesday. "The brothers' legal team is present to ensure that all formalities are carried out correctly."

Romania's Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) said on Wednesday it had conducted four home search warrants within Ilfov county and the Bucharest municipality. It said the investigation concerned "A criminal case regarding the commission of the crimes of setting up an organized criminal group, trafficking of minors, human trafficking, sexual intercourse with a minor, influencing statements, and money laundering." The hearings will be held at the headquarters of DIICOT – Central Structure.

He was already indicted in mid-2023 along with his brother Tristan and two Romanian female suspects for human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, allegations they denied. In July, a Romanian court of appeal overturned a previous ruling that allowed Tate free movement within the European Union while awaiting trial on charges of human trafficking.

Iran's potential retaliation against Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh hinges on the outcome of Gaza ceasefire-hostage release negotiations, according to senior Iranian officials. The assassination, which occurred during Haniyeh's visit to Tehran, has heightened tensions in the region, with Iran vowing a severe response.

Three Iranian sources, speaking to Reuters anonymously, indicated that Iran and its proxies, including Hezbollah, would consider direct action if Gaza talks fail or if Israel is perceived to be prolonging negotiations. The timeline for such a response remains unspecified.

In response to the escalating situation, the US Navy has deployed warships and a submarine to the Middle East to bolster Israeli defenses. Simultaneously, Iran has engaged in diplomatic discussions with Western countries and the United States to calibrate its response.

The US ambassador to Turkey confirmed Washington's efforts to encourage allies to help de-escalate tensions with Iran. Regional government sources described ongoing conversations aimed at avoiding escalation ahead of the Gaza ceasefire-hostage release talks, scheduled to begin on Thursday in either Egypt or Qatar.

White House spokesperson John Kirby acknowledged the possibility of action by Iran or its proxies in the near future, potentially impacting the upcoming talks. In Israel, many anticipate an imminent response following Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's statement vowing to "harshly punish" Israel for the strike.

Iran is reportedly considering sending a representative to participate indirectly in the ceasefire talks, marking a first since the Gaza conflict began. The move suggests Iran's readiness to play a more significant role in the peace process.

Sources close to Hezbollah indicated that while Iran would give negotiations a chance, it would not abandon its intentions to retaliate. A ceasefire in Gaza could provide Iran with the opportunity for a smaller, "symbolic" response.

The ongoing war in Gaza began on Oct. 7, when Hamas terrorists stormed Israeli towns bordering the strip, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians and taking over 240 hostage. Some 115 remain held captive by the terror organization, of whom 41 have been declared dead.

Argentina's Jewish community commemorated Thursday the 30th anniversary of a targeted bombing which killed 85 people, with President Javier Milei promising to right decades of inaction and inconsistencies in the investigations into the attack.

In 1994, a bomb-filled van hit the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, becoming the deadliest such incident in the nation's history.

"Today we chose to speak out, not stay silent," Milei said in an address on Wednesday evening. "We're raising our voice, not folding our arms. We choose life, because anything else is making a game out of death."

In April, Argentina's top criminal court blamed Iran for the attack, saying it was carried out by Hezbollah militants responding to "a political and strategic design" by Iran.

Tehran has denied involvement and refused to turn over suspects, and previous investigations and Interpol arrest warrants have led nowhere.

Milei – a staunch proponent of both the Jewish community and of Israel – said on Wednesday he would propose a bill which would allow for the trial of the suspects in the attack in absentia.

He also said that his government would beef up the national intelligence system to prevent similar attacks from occurring again, while dedicating further resources into investigating the AMIA incident.

Argentine prosecutors have charged top Iranian officials and members of Iran-backed Lebanese armed group Hezbollah with ordering the bombing, as well as an attack in 1992 against the Israeli embassy in Argentina, which killed 22 people.

"Although they may never be able to serve a sentence, they will not be able to escape the eternal condemnation of a court proving their guilt in front of the whole world," Milei said.

The president called the April decision an "enormous step" in seeking justice in the AMIA case, he said that there was much more to go due to the "cover up by the terrorist state of Iran."

Last week, Milei declared Iran-backed militant Islamist group Hamas a terrorist organization for its Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

The president on Wednesday compared the attack on Israel with the 1994 bombing in Buenos Aires and demanded that Hamas release all of the hostages it had claimed, including eight Argentines.
