As former US President Joe Biden fought to win a second term in 2024, his inner circle held private discussions about the likelihood he would require a wheelchair if reelected, according to startling revelations in a forthcoming book by CNN's Jake Tapper and Axios' Alex Thompson.

The explosive report reveals how Biden's physical deterioration had progressed to such an alarming degree by 2023 that his team was deeply concerned about his health while simultaneously working to hide the full extent of his decline from voters during his reelection campaign.

In "Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again," scheduled for release on May 20, the authors explain that Biden's physician Kevin O'Connor frequently battled with political staffers about the president's demanding schedule, claiming they "were trying to kill him" while he was "trying to keep him alive."

The book, based on extensive interviews with more than 200 individuals, primarily Democratic insiders, documents the significant deterioration of Biden's spine and outlines comprehensive measures implemented to prevent the then-81-year-old president from falling in public after a June 2023 incident when he tripped over a sandbag at the Air Force Academy.

Biden's team enacted numerous safeguards, including planning shorter walking paths, requiring handrails for stage steps, having him wear sneakers more frequently, providing more detailed visual briefings, and offering enhanced guidance through his movements – all while maintaining publicly that his labored walking style was primarily the result of a 2020 foot fracture.

The authors note that while O'Connor had documented in early 2021 that Biden's foot fractures were "completely healed," the White House continued to reference the injury when questioned about the president's increasingly difficult gait. In his official health summaries, O'Connor emphasized "significant spinal arthritis" as the explanation for changes in Biden's walking style.

What's politically revealing is the authors' assertion that Biden's aides considered using a wheelchair during the campaign "politically untenable" despite his worsening physical condition.

These revelations provide fresh context to Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race following his widely criticized June 2024 debate performance against Donald Trump. Three weeks after that decisive debate, Biden abandoned his reelection bid and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

A Biden spokesperson, who requested anonymity, challenged the portrayal in the book, stating that Biden's medical examination "made clear that he had a stiffened gait caused, in part, by wear and tear to his spine – but that no special treatment was necessary and that it had not worsened."

The spokesperson maintained Biden was "transparent about this" and that "evidence of aging is not evidence of mental incapacity," arguing that no one has identified instances where Biden "was unable to do his job because of mental decline."

In another remarkable disclosure, the book reports that Biden repeatedly failed to recognize George Clooney at a June 2024 fundraiser despite having known the actor for two decades. For Clooney, observing Biden's "diminished" physical appearance after not having seen him since 2022 was characterized as a "holy sh*t" moment.

A new Washington Post-Schar School poll reveals Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are locked in a virtual tie across seven key battleground states, with just two weeks remaining before the 2024 election. The survey of over 5,000 registered voters, conducted in early October, shows both candidates garnering 47% support among a critical portion of the electorate likely to determine the next president.

The poll, which focused on Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, found Harris' standing has improved significantly compared to President Joe Biden's position in a similar survey conducted in the spring. While Trump's support remains relatively unchanged at 48%, Harris now enjoys 47% support among registered voters, up from 41% for Biden in the previous poll.

Among likely voters, the race is even tighter, with Harris holding a slim 49% to 48% lead over Trump. The survey also identified a sizable group of "Deciders" – voters who have not firmly committed to either candidate and whose voting history suggests they may be swing voters in November.

"These battleground states could be won or lost by the narrowest of margins," a spokesperson for The Washington Post said, highlighting the importance of these undecided voters. "The choices made by this group of 'Deciders' could ultimately determine the outcome of the election."

The poll reveals some notable demographic trends among uncommitted voters. Younger voters aged 18-25 are the most likely to be undecided, with 43% still weighing their options. Additionally, non-White voters are more likely to be uncommitted than White voters, at 34% and 23% respectively.

State-by-state analysis shows varying levels of support for each candidate. Trump holds a slight edge in Arizona and North Carolina, while Harris leads in Georgia and maintains a slim advantage in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In Nevada, the candidates tied among likely voters.

The survey also delved into voter enthusiasm and key issues driving electoral decisions. Only a small percentage of "probable" voters for either candidate express enthusiasm about their choice, underscoring the importance of turnout efforts in the final weeks of the campaign.

Economic concerns remain paramount for many voters, particularly among those still undecided. A majority of potential Harris voters perceive the economy and inflation as worsening, despite recent improvements in the annual inflation rate. This perception could pose a challenge for the Harris campaign in the homestretch.

Climate change and abortion rights emerge as potential wedge issues for Trump, with probable Trump voters expressing more moderate views on these topics compared to his committed supporters.

Both candidates face challenges in solidifying their support among key demographic groups. Harris leads Trump by 22 points among Hispanic voters across all seven states, which is slightly lower than Biden's performance in 2020. Among Black voters, Harris holds a substantial 82% to 12% lead, though this 70-point margin is somewhat smaller than Biden's advantage four years ago.

The gender gap between the candidates is significant, with Harris leading among women by seven points and Trump holding an identical lead among men. This divide is most pronounced among voters under 30.

As the campaign enters its final phase, voters in these battleground states are acutely aware of their outsized role in determining the outcome. Three-quarters of respondents say they feel empowered by the knowledge that their vote could make a difference.

With the race so close and the stakes so high, both campaigns are likely to intensify their efforts to win over undecided voters and ensure high turnout among their supporters in these critical swing states.

The Washington Post-Schar School poll was conducted October 1-15, 2024, among 5,012 registered voters in seven battleground states, with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points overall and 2 to 4.5 points for results in individual states.

Donald Trump, speaking at an event commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel, declared that the upcoming US presidential election would be "the most important day in the history of Israel," Politico reports.

The former president made his remarks at his golf club in Miami, where he addressed a crowd of supportive Jewish leaders. Trump cast a potential victory by his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, as an existential threat to Israel. "If you want to know the truth, I believe that. I think you believe that, too," Trump said to applause. "If we don't win this election there is a tremendous consequence for everything."

Trump blamed the Democratic administration for the atrocities that occurred a year ago, stating without evidence, "The October 7 attack would never have happened if I was president. The past two years have proven that weakness only begets violence and war."

Trump addressed the crowd at his golf club, describing October 7 as "one of the darkest hours in all of human history." He claimed that "Anti-Jewish hatred has returned even here in America" and is "within the ranks of the Democrat Party in particular."

The former president made a series of promises to the room, which included Republican lawmakers and prominent Jewish supporters like billionaire backer Miriam Adelson. "I will not allow the Jewish state to be threatened with destruction. I will not allow another holocaust of the Jewish people," Trump declared.

Both Trump and Harris broke from the campaign trail to attend solemn events marking the anniversary of the October 7 attack, which killed 1,200 people and sparked a bloody conflict in the region.

Harris spoke at the Naval Observatory, calling the massacre "pure evil" and urging that "the world must never forget" what happened. She and second gentleman Doug Emhoff planted a ceremonial pomegranate tree "to remind future vice presidents" not to "abandon the goal of peace, dignity and security for all."

Harris reiterated her commitment to "ensure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself" and demanded the release of hostages still held by Hamas. She also mentioned Palestinians, calling for "reliev[ing] the immense suffering of innocent Palestinians in Gaza, who have experienced so much pain and loss over the year."

Earlier in the day, Trump visited the New York City gravesite of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known as Lubavitcher Rebbe. Wearing a yarmulke, he placed a note praying for the release of hostages held in Gaza and was accompanied by the parents of American-Israeli hostage Idan Alexander.

Republican vice presidential nominee Sen JD Vance addressed a memorial rally in Washington, criticizing the Biden administration's handling of the hostages as "disgraceful." He called on Harris to "bring them home" and use her authority to help resolve the situation.

US Vice President Kamala Harris has expressed support for President Joe Biden's May decision to withhold a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs from Israel, while reiterating her backing for Israel's right to self-defense against Hamas, Pune News reports.

"One of the things that we have done that I'm entirely supportive of is the pause that we've put on the 2,000-pound bombs," Harris said on Tuesday during an onstage interview at a National Association of Black Journalists event. She was repeatedly pressed on why the US isn't using more leverage against Israel to end the war in Gaza.

In May, Biden had indicated he would withhold certain weapons shipments to Israel if it launched a major ground offensive in the densely populated southern Gaza city of Rafah. Some of those weapons have since been released. In August, the US approved $20 billion in arms sales to Israel.

Harris began her response by reiterating what has become a standard speech on the Israel-Hamas war, emphasizing several key points. She stressed the brutal nature of Hamas's October 7 attack, asserting Israel's right to self-defense while noting that the manner of defense matters. The vice president acknowledged that too many Palestinian civilians have been killed and described the scenes from Gaza as heartbreaking.

"Stepping back, October 7, 1,200 Israelis were slaughtered, and actually, some Americans, by the way, in that number. Slaughtered. Young people who were attending a concert. Women were horribly raped. And yes, so I have said, Israel has a right to defend itself. We would," Harris stated. "How it does so matters, and far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed."

Harris touted her role in discussions about the "day-after scenario" in Gaza, restating the Biden administration's position that Gaza should not be reoccupied, that its borders remain unchanged, and that all people in the region are secure.

She reiterated the administration's stance that there should ultimately be a two-state solution to the conflict and stressed the importance of preventing Iran from sowing instability in the region. "Let us also recognize," added Harris, "that Iran is not empowered in this whole scenario in terms of the peace and stability of the region."

"But ultimately, the thing that is going to unlock everything else in that region is getting this (cease-fire) deal done," Harris emphasized.

A new New York Times/Siena College poll has found Former President Donald Trump narrowly leading Vice President Kamala Harris among likely voters nationwide, raising questions about the durability of Harris's recent surge in popularity.

The poll shows Trump ahead by one percentage point, with 48 percent support compared to Harris's 47 percent. This marks the first time Trump has led in a major nonpartisan national survey in approximately a month. The poll surveyed 1,695 voters nationwide from September 3 to 6, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

The New York Times cautions that the results should be viewed skeptically, given the lack of confirmation from other recent polls. However, several factors could explain a potential decline in Harris's support. The vice president had been riding high on a wave of positive coverage following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race in July and throughout the Democratic convention in August. It is possible that in the past two uneventful weeks, her numbers dropped.

The timing of the poll may also contribute to its unique findings. There have been few high-quality surveys conducted since the Democratic convention, with Labor Day weekend and the upcoming debate potentially affecting polling schedules.

Pete Buttigieg, the US Secretary of Transportation, recently delivered a powerful response to Senator JD Vance's comments about childlessness.

In a series of hurtful statements from 2021 interviews with Tucker Carlson, Vance claimed that childless Americans have "no physical commitment to the future of this country." He went further, stating, "So many of the leaders of the left, and I hate to be so personal about this, but they're people without kids trying to brainwash the minds of our children. And that really disorients me, and it really disturbs me." I don't think he hated "to be so personal." It seems to me that he loved it and intentionally tried to damage their character.

Vance's comments specifically called out Buttigieg and Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he likened to "a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable in their own lives" and "want to make the rest of the country miserable too." While Vance recently defended these remarks on "The Megyn Kelly Show" as "obviously sarcastic," they sparked widespread backlash, and rightly so.

Buttigieg's response at the Democratic National Convention was both personal and powerful. He stated:

"Someone who said that if you don't have kids, you have, quote, 'no physical commitment to the future of this country.' You know, Senator, when I deployed to Afghanistan, I didn't have kids then. Many of the men and women who went outside the wire with me didn't have kids either. But let me tell you, our commitment to the future of this country was pretty damn physical."

This rebuttal effectively challenged Vance's narrow view of patriotism and civic duty. Buttigieg's words highlight the diverse ways in which Americans contribute to and invest in their nation's future beyond just having children. His argument underscores that service, sacrifice, and dedication to one's country can take many forms.

It's worth noting that Vance's comments also oversimplified the personal situations of those he criticized. Harris is a stepmother to her husband's children, with her husband's ex-wife defending Harris as "loving, nurturing, fiercely protective, and always present." Buttigieg and his husband adopted twins in September 2021, after what Buttigieg described as "a fairly heartbreaking setback in our adoption journey." He added that Vance "couldn't have known that, but maybe that's why you shouldn't be talking about other people's children."

Buttigieg's response serves as a powerful reminder that patriotism and commitment to one's country are not defined by family status, but by actions and sacrifices made for the greater good of the nation. It also highlights the importance of empathy and understanding in political discourse, recognizing that personal choices and circumstances are often more complex than they may appear.

The legal challenges facing former President Donald Trump have gained momentum this week, as Special Counsel for the United States Department of Justice, Jack Smith, takes aggressive action in two federal criminal cases.

According to reporting by The New York Times, Smith's office filed an appeal on Monday against Judge Aileen M. Cannon's dismissal of the indictment accusing Trump of mishandling classified documents after leaving office. This move comes just 10 weeks before Election Day, signaling the prosecutor's determination to pursue the case.

In a separate development on Tuesday, Smith's team filed a revised indictment in the case alleging Trump's involvement in plotting to overturn the 2020 election. This updated version aims to maintain the bulk of the charges while aligning them with the Supreme Court's recent ruling on presidential immunity.

While neither case is expected to go to trial before the upcoming election, Smith has indicated his intention to continue pushing the cases forward, even if Trump were to win the presidency in November. Should Trump reclaim the presidency, he would possess the authority to dismiss Smith and effectively terminate both legal proceedings. Nevertheless, Smith seems determined to vigorously pursue these cases as the campaign intensifies. Sources close to the investigation indicate that the special counsel intends to press forward with the prosecutions right up until Inauguration Day, even in the event of a Trump victory.

The election interference case had been on hold for nearly eight months as various federal courts, including the Supreme Court, considered Trump's claims of presidential immunity. Following the Supreme Court's decision in July, which granted Trump broad protections against criminal prosecution, the case was returned to trial judge Tanya S. Chutkan.

Judge Chutkan now faces the complex task of reviewing the indictment to determine which allegations can proceed under the new immunity guidelines. Smith's team, getting ahead of the Friday deadline set by the judge, submitted a revised indictment on Tuesday.

The new indictment maintains the original four charges against Trump, accusing him of plots to defraud the United States, obstruct the certification of the election, and deprive Americans of their voting rights. However, it removes allegations related to Trump's interactions with the Justice Department, which the Supreme Court ruled were part of his official duties as president.

"The revised indictment carefully reframes the charges to emphasize Trump's actions as a private candidate rather than as president," said a legal expert familiar with the case. "This is a strategic move to navigate the immunity ruling while preserving the core of the prosecution's case."

In the classified documents case, Smith's team is challenging Judge Cannon's dismissal, which was based on her interpretation of the Constitution's appointments clause. The appeal argues that there are four current statutes granting the attorney general authority to appoint special counsels, citing historical precedents dating back to the Civil War.

Former President Donald Trump has enthusiastically endorsed a new book by his wife in a social media post on X. The book, simply titled "MELANIA," promises to offer readers an intimate look at the Former First Lady Melania Trump's experiences in the White House and beyond.

In his characteristic style, Trump urged his followers to preorder the book on Amazon, writing, "If you love our former First Lady as much as me, and are ready for the Truth, buy her new book now!"

According to Trump's post, the book covers a wide range of topics, offering "an insightful perspective" on Melania's tenure as First Lady of the United States. Readers can expect to find details about the Trump family's shared experiences during their time in office. The book also delves into Melania's "entrepreneurial achievements" and "the challenges and triumphs she experienced since her childhood in Europe."

This publication marks Melania Trump's first major public project since leaving the White House in January 2021. The release of "MELANIA" could signal her desire to shape her own narrative and legacy as a former First Lady. This role has historically been scrutinized and analyzed long after a presidential term ends.

Melania Trump joins a long line of former First Ladies who have penned memoirs about their time in the White House. From Eleanor Roosevelt to Michelle Obama, these books often provide unique insights into the personal and political lives of presidential families, as well as the challenges and responsibilities of the First Lady role.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama and Former President Barack Obama delivered powerful speeches endorsing Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and criticizing Republican nominee Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago on Tuesday, according to The Guardian.

Michelle emphasized the "contagious power of hope" that Harris inspired. She acknowledged a recent sense of despair about the future, telling the audience, "To be honest, I'm realizing that until recently, I have mourned the dimming of that hope. Maybe you've experienced the same feelings, a deep pit in my stomach, a palpable sense of dread about the future."

Drawing parallels between her own family's experience and that of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, Michelle highlighted the sacrifices made by Harris's mother, who immigrated to the United States from India. She praised Harris's readiness for the presidency, stating, "Kamala Harris is more than ready for this moment."

In a pointed rejection of exclusionary rhetoric, she declared, "No one has the monopoly on what it means to be an American. No one. Only Kamala Harris truly understands the unseen labor and unwavering commitment that has always made America great."

Without naming him directly, Michelle took several swipes at Trump. She alluded to the birther movement that Trump had prominently supported during Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, which falsely claimed he was not a natural-born US citizen.

Contrasting Harris's background with Trump's, Michelle said, "She understands that most of us will never be afforded the grace of failing forward. We will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth. If we bankrupt a business or choke in a crisis, we don't get a second, third, or fourth chance. If things don't go our way, we don't have the luxury of whining or cheating others to get further ahead. If we see a mountain in front of us, we don't expect there to be an escalator waiting to take us to the top."

In a moment that drew thunderous applause, Michelle quipped, "Who is going to tell him [Trump] that the job that he is seeking might be one of those 'black jobs,'" referencing a comment he had made about migrants taking "black jobs" as part of his pitch to black voters.

She then introduced her husband, who served as a powerful endorsement of Harris and a scathing critique of Trump. Barack's address was filled with energy and punctuated by chants, "Yes, she can!"

"We do not need four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos. We have seen that movie before and we all know that the sequel is usually worse. America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a better story. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris," he said.

"This is a 78-year-old billionaire who hasn't stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago," he said. "It's been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that's actually gotten worse now that he's afraid of losing to Kamala."

"Most of all, Donald Trump wants us to think that this country is hopelessly divided between us and them; between the 'real' Americans who, of course, support him and the outsiders who don't. And he wants you to think that you'll be richer and safer if you will just give him the power to put those 'other' people back in their place. It's one of the oldest tricks in politics – from a guy whose act has gotten pretty stale."

The former president accused Trump of seeing power as merely a means to his ends, citing the former president's desire for tax cuts benefiting his wealthy friends and his reluctance to solve immigration issues for fear of hurting his campaign.

Barack drew a stark contrast between Trump and Harris, describing her as "ready for the job" and "a person who has spent her life fighting on behalf of people who need a voice and a champion." The packed arena crackled with energy as America's first black president made a case for electing the first woman and first woman of color to the Oval Office.

In a call for empathy and understanding, Barack urged Democrats to listen to their political opponents. "We need to remember that we've all got our blind spots and contradictions and prejudices; and that if we want to win over those who aren't yet ready to support our candidate, we need to listen to their concerns – and maybe learn something in the process."
