A chartered aircraft carrying approximately 100 Iranian citizens left Louisiana Monday evening, bound for Tehran with a Qatar layover, marking unprecedented deportation cooperation between Washington and Tehran. Sources from both governments confirmed the operation to The New York Times.

Tuesday's expected arrival follows months of bilateral negotiations, with coordination from the Iranian Foreign Ministry ensuring the reception of deportees while American officials finalized removal plans, according to The New York Times. Anonymous sources cited authorization limits for discussing specifics.

Expanding deportation efforts now target nations with severe human rights violations as the Trump administration removes migrants regardless of destination conditions, The New York Times reported. Christian converts among the earlier 2025 deportees to Costa Rica and Panama face religious persecution risks, prompting advocacy groups' legal challenges.

American protection historically extended to Iranians escaping systematic persecution of dissidents, minorities, women's advocates, journalists, and LGBTQ citizens. Recent border arrivals claiming political or religious persecution increased significantly, though deportee identities and immigration details remained unclear, The New York Times noted.

Married couples joined single men and women on the flight, some choosing departure after lengthy detention while others faced forced removal following asylum denials or pending hearings, Iranian officials told The New York Times. Foreign ministry assurances promised safety despite deportees' fears amid Iran's economic collapse, featuring currency devaluation, inflation, unemployment, and infrastructure failures.

United Nations Security Council sanctions were reimposed on Saturday, compounding existing crises, as this rare diplomatic coordination demonstrates a shift in immigration enforcement priorities. Previous annual deportations peaked at 24 individuals in 2024 via commercial flights, The New York Times reported, contrasting sharply with Monday's mass charter operation.

The UK government has announced plans for a "large surge" in deportation flights for failed asylum seekers and others without legal right to remain in the country, according to reporting by the BBC. The plans, unveiled by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, include hiring 100 additional intelligence officers to target people-smuggling gangs and reopening immigration removal centers in Hampshire and Oxfordshire.

Cooper stated her intention to introduce a "better-controlled" system to replace "the chaos that has blighted the system for far too long." The move is part of Labour's efforts to tackle illegal immigration and small boat crossings in the English Channel.

Home Office Minister Seema Malhotra reported that nine "return" flights have taken off in the six weeks since Labour won the election, including one carrying over 200 people. The government aims to achieve "the highest rate of removals of those with no right to be here" since Theresa May's premiership in 2018 over the next six months.

Dr. Peter Walsh, a senior researcher at the Migration Observatory, told BBC Radio 4's Today program that reaching 2018 levels would require 3,000 more removals this year than last. He described this as "an achievable goal, but it's a pretty low bar," noting that 2018 saw the lowest number of enforced removals in 20 years, excluding the pandemic period.

The Conservative opposition criticized Labour's approach, with shadow home secretary James Cleverly stating the plan was "not ambitious enough." He accused the government of giving "an effective amnesty to thousands of illegal migrants" and failing to appoint a head for their "phantom border command."

Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council charity, urged the government to support voluntary returns rather than expanding detention programs. He told the BBC, "Instead of wasting taxpayers' money on expanding detention places the government should be investing in what are called voluntary returns programs."

The government's announcement includes the deployment of 100 new specialist intelligence officers and investigators to the National Crime Agency (NCA) to disrupt criminal smuggling gangs and prevent dangerous boat crossings. The NCA currently has around 70 active investigations into people smuggling and trafficking groups.

Other measures include redeploying staff to work on returning failed asylum seekers, increasing sanctions against employers who hire workers illegally, and reopening the Campsfield and Haslar detention centers in Oxfordshire and Hampshire, adding 290 beds to the system.

More than 19,000 people have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year, representing a 10% increase from last year but a decrease from the peak of over 21,000 in the same period in 2022.

ย The Labour government has scrapped the previous Conservative administration's Rwanda scheme, which aimed to deter Channel crossings by deporting some migrants to the East African country. Instead, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to focus on combating criminal gangs arranging the crossings and expediting the process of returning those with no legal right to remain in the UK.

Two Somali refugees living in Arizona were charged with providing support to a terror group after federal agents say they were planning to travel from Tucson to Egypt to join the Islamic State.

A criminal charge unsealed Monday alleged 21-year-old Ahmed Mahad Mohamed and 20-year-old Abdi Yemani Hussein had told an undercover FBI employee that they wanted to travel to the Middle East to carry out violence and "achieve martyrdom."

Both Tucson residents, who had received government documents to travel to Egypt, were arrested Friday after they checked in for their flights and made their way through security at Tucson International Airport.

Mohamed is accused of expressing an interest in beheading people, while authorities say Hussein expressed a desire to kill people in the Middle East.

Tom Hartzell, an attorney for Mohamed, didn't return a call seeking comment on his client's behalf.

Brad Roach, attorney for Hussein, said his client is asserting his innocence and "looking forward to the legal process going forward."

Authorities say Mohamed told an undercover FBI employee during social-media exchanges that he was "thirsty" for the blood of disbelievers and that "the best wake up call is [for the] Islamic State to get victory or another 911."

During an April meeting with the undercover FBI employee, Mohamed said "jihad is the only thing on his mind and that he wants to make the kuffar (disbelievers) in Egypt cry," according to the criminal complaint.

At another meeting a month ago between Mohamed, Hussein and the undercover FBI employee, Hussein said he wanted to blow up the White House and that when he arrived in the Sinai peninsula of Egypt, "he needs blood on his hands," according to the complaint.

A Syrian asylum seeker in Sweden has received a 12-year prison sentence for planning to explode one or more bombs in Copenhagen and stabbing random people with kitchen knives.

The Copenhagen City Court said Monday Moyed Al Zoebi, 32, acted on behalf of the Islamic State group. The court found him guilty last month.

The man had an accomplice, Dieab Khadigah, who was sentenced in Germany in July 2017 to a prison term of six and a half years.

After an internet chat, they were to gather in Copenhagen in November 2016 for the attack.

However, Khadigah was arrested in Germany as he tried to enter Denmark with a backpack containing 17,000 matches, 17 batteries, fireworks, two kitchen knives and six walkie-talkies that Al Zoebi who lives in southern Sweden, had ordered.

A group of 146 asylum-seekers have arrived in Italy as part of a U.N.-backed humanitarian evacuation from Libya.

The U.N. refugee agency says it's the fifth such evacuation since 2017, though previous airlifts have taken migrants to Niger and elsewhere.

The group arrived Monday at a Rome military base. Dozens of the asylum-seekers are minors, many of whom are unaccompanied. They hail from Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Ethiopia.

Under anti-migrant Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, Italy has essentially closed its ports to migrants fleeing Libya aboard smugglers boats.

Salvini's deputy, Stefano Candiani, said Monday that such evacuations, in which the U.N. screens asylum-seekers in situ, are the way people deserving of protection should arrive in Europe.

The evacuation comes as officials reported Monday that Libyan forces loyal to a former military commander have intensified their airstrikes on Tripoli, where heavy fighting and blocked roads have left civilians trapped in their homes.

Field Marshal Khalifa Hifter's self-styled Libyan National Army launched an operation to retake the capital on April 4 and has been locked in heavy fighting in and around the city with militias loosely allied with a U.N.-supported government. The clashes have killed at least 345 people, including 22 civilians, according to the latest U.N. figures released last on Sunday.

Libyan officials said LNA airstrikes have targeted the Nawasi Brigade in the Abu Salim district, about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from Tripoli's center. At least four civilians were killed, they said.

They said airstrikes hit al-Qaqaa military camp in the town of al-Falah, south of Tripoli. The camp is controlled by powerful militias from the western town of Misrata that are also allied with the Tripoli government. Airstrikes and shelling also hit the towns of Khallet al-Forjan, Ain Zara and al-Twaisha, south of the capital, and heavy fighting was underway in Salah al-Deen, an area that saw earlier clashes between rival militias in September.

Austria's leader is demanding that his junior coalition partner distances itself from a poem that compared migrants with rats.

Conservative Chancellor Sebastian Kurz told the Austria Press Agency that the Freedom Party's branch in Upper Austria province should "immediately and unambiguously" distance itself from the poem that appeared in a party publication in Braunau.

Kurz said "the choice of words is abhorrent, inhuman and deeply racist, and has no place in Upper Austria or the whole country."

The poem, which was titled "The Town Rat" and warned against mixing cultures, also drew strong criticism from the center-left opposition.

Kurz struck a coalition deal with the Freedom Party and became chancellor in late 2017.
