Several well-known YouTube series failed to secure Emmy nominations this year, despite a growing effort to gain recognition from traditional entertainment circles, NBC News reports.

The Emmy nominations, announced on Wednesday, did not include popular shows such as "Hot Ones," "Chicken Shop Date," and "Good Mythical Morning." According to Variety, "Hot Ones," a celebrity interview show featuring spicy wings, was on the ballot for the outstanding talk series category.

"Chicken Shop Date," hosted by Amelia Dimoldenberg, and "Good Mythical Morning," a morning talk and variety show by Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, were both vying for nominations in the outstanding short-form comedy, drama, or variety series category.

While digital creators have won Emmys in the past, and some YouTube stars like Rachel Bloom have transitioned successfully to traditional entertainment, many content creators have recently intensified their efforts to gain mainstream recognition.

In a June interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sean Evans, host of "Hot Ones," expressed his desire for Emmy recognition. "I'm a traditionalist," Evans said. "I grew up on Letterman, Conan, and Jimmy and those kinds of shows. To compete against those institutions, I think would be the most important distinction we've ever had."

Some digital creators, like Dimoldenberg, have already made inroads into traditional awards shows. Her red carpet interviews at the 2023 Golden Globes gained significant social media traction, leading to her appointment as a "social media ambassador and red carpet correspondent" for the 2024 Academy Awards.

While YouTube did not make formal Emmy submissions on behalf of its creators, the platform's CEO, Neal Mohan, has been vocal about the need for creator recognition. In a February blog post, Mohan advocated for digital creators to be treated as their own production studios, stating they are "redefining the future of the entertainment industry with top-notch storytelling."

Mohan further addressed the Emmys in a Hollywood Reporter column in May. "Some might argue that broadening the Primetime Emmys to include consideration of creators would detract from its storied history or lessen its cultural significance," he wrote. "But recognizing the work of creators is the best way for the Television Academy to continue its legacy of honoring modern culture, while also building a bridge to the next generation of viewers."

However, Mohan's assertion that "it's time a creator won an Emmy" drew criticism from some YouTube veterans. Hank Green, co-creator of "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries," which won an Emmy in 2013, responded to Mohan's column on X: "Should I tell him?"

Nevertheless, the fact that the Israeli spy thriller Tehran beat more than 20 contenders to win the Drama Series category is quite an accomplishment.

No doubt, those in the television industry dream of being awarded the golden statuette. But the question is: How much does it help the series? Turns out, not much.

Ask the creators of Nevsu, which won an International Emmy for the comedy series in 2018, and they will tell you that the victory did not even help them secure a permanent spot on a broadcaster's program.

Because what else does such an award provide other than a feeling of accomplishment, appreciation, interviews, and opportunities for those involved? Tehran has already been renewed for a second season. Also, an Emmy does undo the plot's flaws.

Perhaps it's a good thing that movie critics are not the ones awarding the prize, and all that is left for us to do is wonder how a spy thriller that wasn't even Kan 11's best show this year got this distinction.

Perhaps it is due to the world being overly fond of Israel's conflicts with others. Tensions between Israel and Iran that have been fueled by international media for years seem to intrigue global viewers that are somewhat familiar with the conflict.

Add to that the passionate love affair between a young Iranian and an Israeli Mossad agent. That part of the plot alone is worth half an Emmy.

Waltz with BashirBeaufortPrisoners of WarFauda, and now Tehran. When Israel is not at war, it seems we excel at exporting movies that are based on bloody conflicts with our neighbors.

If there is one thing that Israel is consistently good at, it's fighting with Arabs. How lovely that the world appreciates this and awards us with prizes for this.

Tehran, produced by the Kan public broadcaster and picked up globally by Apple TV+, follows a female Mossad agent who goes undercover on a mission in Iran – to help prepare the ground for an IDF airstrike on an Iranian nuclear reactor – and unexpectedly falls in love with an Iranian man.

The show competed against India's Araya, Chile's El Presidente, and the United Kingdom's There She Goes.

Tehran is not only an espionage series; it's also about understanding the human behind your enemy," executive producer Dana Eden said in her acceptance speech.

The cast and crew "work with Iranian actors from all over the world, Iranian refugees that just fled the current regime… we work in collaboration, through love, and we actually found out that we have a lot in common," she said.

"I think it gives a lot of hope for the future, and I hope that we can walk together, the Iranians and Israelis, in Jerusalem and in Tehran, as friends and not as enemies," she added.

The show, which has received critical acclaim both inside and outside of Israel, stars Niv Sultan as Tamar, the young Mossad agent, alongside Navid Negahban, Menashe Noy and Shaun Toub. It was written and created by Moshe Zonder, Maor Kohn, and Eden.

Zonder also wrote for the critically-acclaimed Netflix show "Fauda."

The second season of the series is currently being filmed in Athens, where Oscar-nominated actress Glenn Close has joined the series.

Tehran was renewed for a second season, Apple TV+ announced in January. The first season premiered on June 22, 2020, in Israel and on September 25 internationally.

Israeli actress Shira Haas was nominated on Tuesday for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her performance in Netflix's "Unorthodox."

The 25-year-old Haas won acclaim for her role as Esty, a young Haredi woman from Brooklyn who flees to Berlin to escape an unhappy arranged marriage and embraces a secular lifestyle there.

The four-episode series was inspired by the 2012 memoir Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots, by Deborah Feldman.

Haas wrote on Instagram in response to her nomination: "Thank you for all the beautiful messages today. I'm still processing it and trying to find the right words. I am so happy and so lucky to have had the privilege of portraying this character and to be nominated for it. Thank you to everyone who took part in the show and made this happen. Thank you to everyone who shared their love. I feel it all. I'm truly grateful."

Unorthodox was nominated for eight Emmy awards including Outstanding Limited Series.

A video shared on Instagram by the actress showed her and Unorthodox co-star Amit Rahav, who plays the character Yanky Shapiro in the series, first receiving the news of their show's nomination. We think it's fair to say they were happy about it.

Haas was nominated in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV movie, alongside Cate Blanchett ("Mrs. America"), Regina King ("Watchmen"), Octavia Spencer ("Self Made"), and Kerry Washington ("Little Fires Everywhere").

"The fact that this show managed to touch so many people's hearts and to get to so many people, with the fact that 50 percent is in Yiddish, it just shows that it [transcends boundaries]," Haas told Entertainment Tonight after the nominations. "For example, when I read the script, I felt attached. It's a different culture and a very different person than me, and I still see myself in this character. And people, maybe they're getting tired of seeing only themselves. I think people want to see someone that looks different from them and still manage to see themselves."

Haas won the award for Best Actress at the Tribeca Film Festival in April for her role in the film Asia.
