A front-line female crime boss for the Comando Vermelho (CV) known as "Penélope" and "Japinha" died Tuesday during a clash with security forces in Rio de Janeiro's North Zone, Metrópoles reported, in what was the largest and deadliest police raid on the crime infested part of the city. The "musa do crime" was a trusted figure who protected drug sale points.

Scenes of smoke have had local media dub the pictures "Gaza-like" and "state of war."

She was struck by a rifle shot to the face in the Alemão and Penha complexes. Nicknamed the "musa do crime" for posting provocative photos with weapons, "Penélope" was considered a trusted figure by trafficking leaders, tasked with protecting escape routes and drug sale points, according to Metrópoles.

Her body was found near a main community access point after hours of gunfire, Metrópoles noted. Reports indicate "Penélope" resisted and opened fire on agents before being fatally shot in the head. She was found wearing camouflage and a tactical vest with rifle magazine compartments, reinforcing her active front-line role for the faction, as reported by Metrópoles.

The death of "Penélope" occurred during the deadliest police operation in the state's history, Metrópoles confirmed. The operation concluded with 64 fatalities, including four police officers, and 81 arrests.

The Palácio Guanabara stated the action involved 2,500 agents from the Civil Police, Military Police, and special units, Metrópoles reported. The operation's objective was to halt the CV's territorial expansion and dismantle its logistical base.

Residents of the Grota, Fazendinha, and Vila Cruzeiro regions described a "night of terror." Metrópoles detailed accounts of helicopters overhead and armored vehicles clearing paths, with gunfire and explosions lasting until dawn.

Despite the massive police presence, some criminals managed to flee via alternative routes. Agents discovered tunnels and camouflaged passages between structures used for coordinated escapes, Metrópoles reported. The tactic recalled a similar maneuver seen during the 2010 invasion of Alemão.

Israeli security forces arrested Palestinian Authority Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Fadi al-Hadami at his home in east Jerusalem overnight Sunday, Palestinian media reported Sunday.

If the reports are accurate, this would be the third such arrest in the last five months, as Israel has already arrested al-Hadami twice, on June 30 and again on Sept. 25. Palestinian reports said that Israeli security forces raided al-Hadami's home in the neighborhood of Silwan.

Since he was appointed to his post in April, al-Hadami has been involved in a number of provocations. He has tried to leverage Israeli demolitions of illegally-constructed homes in east Jerusalem to increase unrest. On June 26, he, along with other senior PA officials, caused a diplomatic incident by bringing the President of Chile Sebastián Piñera to the Temple Mount.

The outraged Israeli reaction to the Palestinians hosting Piñera at the Temple Mount prompted the Chilean president to apologize to President Reuven Rivlin later than same day.

Israeli security forces recently discovered four Torah scrolls stolen from a synagogue in the city of Bnei Brak hidden in a barn in a Palestinian Authority town near Nablus, along with a hunting rifle and ammunition.

The scrolls, worth tens of thousands of dollars, were stolen on June 10 from the Orot Hatorah synagogue on Rabbi Akiva Street, one of the oldest synagogues in the city which was used by the famed Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, the Chazon Ish.

The synagogue itself was vandalized, with holy books strewn across the floor.

The scrolls were located in a barn housing sheep in the Palestinian town of Aqraba. Five men in their 20s from Aqraba and east Jerusalem have been arrested in connection with the theft.

A hunting rifle, ammunition and fireworks – which are often used as weapons due to their explosive capabilities – were also discovered in the barn.

The scrolls will be returned to the synagogue following a police investigation.

Liran Cohen, 35, was inspired to go into the security and defense sector after losing his mother in a terrorist bombing in Afula in 1994. She was killed by a piece of shrapnel.

"She died a needless death, and that made me realize that I want to go into the defense and security field. When I help one soldier, one family, I feel good about myself. I lost something I wasn't supposed to lose," Cohen says.

After completing degrees in nonscientific areas – humanities and business administration – Cohen began creating products to help protect security forces and civilians. He founded T9 Design and opened a factory in Raanana, where he manufactures tactical textiles for the IDF as well as various other safety technology. Most of his company's products are designed for the military and made available for civilian use after a certain amount of time.

"Today, we're the second-biggest company in the field of tactical operational solutions. Everything is made in Israel. My life story led me to take pride in what I do, with my own two hands."

This past year, Cohen has expanded his horizons and begun working on a way of combatting agricultural terrorism. He came up with anti-theft fake rocks. His company sends teams to sample the ground in a given field, and based on the rocks or fauna they find, build similar rocks, fake trees, or bushes that include hidden cameras and surveillance equipment, as well as motion sensors and alarms.

The security rocks were originally developed for use by the IDF and the Defense Ministry. Each system takes up to 45 days to manufacture. Once in place, the systems can track suspects' cars; groups of vandals who operate at night; and spot invasive animals. The company is now making the technology available to farmers to help them combat agricultural crime.

"The thieves have learned to avoid cameras," Cohen explains. "We created a platform that will provide farmers with a concealed solution to the plague of agricultural crime. The new development will be the farmers' eyes in the field and allow them to set up defenses and concealed surveillance."

US envoy to Sri Lanka says threat is real as security forces maintain high alert https://www.israelhayom.com/2019/04/30/us-envoy-to-sri-lanka-says-threat-is-real-as-security-forces-maintain-high-alert/ https://www.israelhayom.com/2019/04/30/us-envoy-to-sri-lanka-says-threat-is-real-as-security-forces-maintain-high-alert/#respond Tue, 30 Apr 2019 09:00:00 +0000 https://www.israelhayom.com/?p=361835 The U.S. ambassador to Sri Lanka said on Tuesday that some of the Islamist militants involved in the Easter Sunday bombings on the island were likely still at large and could be planning fresh attacks. The U.S. ambassador to Sri Lanka said on Tuesday that some of the Islamist militants involved in the Easter Sunday bombings on the island were likely still at large and could be planning fresh attacks.

Sri Lankan security forces also said they were maintaining a high level of alert amid intelligence reports that the militants were likely to strike before the start of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan.

"Tremendous progress has been made towards apprehending those plotters but I don't think the story is over yet," Ambassador Alaina Teplitz said in an interview. "We do believe that there is active planning underway [for more attacks]."

Scores of suspected Islamists have been arrested in the multiethnic island nation since April 21 suicide bomb attacks on hotels and churches that killed more than 250 people, including 42 foreign nationals.

"Security will stay tight for several days because military and police are still tracking down suspects," a senior police intelligence official said.

Another government source told Reuters a document has been circulated among key security establishments instructing police and security forces across the country to remain on high alert because the militants were expected to try a strike before Ramadan.

Ramadan is scheduled to begin in Sri Lanka on May 6.

Teplitz told Reuters that the risk of more attacks remained real.

"We certainly have reason to believe that the active attack group has not been fully rendered inactive," she said.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting Sri Lankan authorities in the investigations but Teplitz declined to give more details.

The government has lifted a ban on social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Viber, a source at the president's office said. The ban had been imposed immediately after the attacks to prevent the spread of rumors.

The government has also banned women from wearing face veils under an emergency law put in place after the Easter attacks.

Authorities suspect members of two previously little-known groups – National Thawheedh Jamaath (NTJ) and Jammiyathul Millathu Ibrahim – of carrying out the attacks, although the Islamic State extremist group has claimed responsibility.

Authorities believe Zahran Hashim, the founder of NTJ, was the mastermind and one of the nine suicide bombers.

In India, police said they had arrested a 29-year-old man in the southern state of Kerala, close to Sri Lanka, for planning similar attacks there. The man had been influenced by speeches made by Zahran, the government's National Investigation Agency said in a statement.

Sri Lanka's population of 22 million is about 70% Buddhist but includes Hindu (13%), Muslim (10%), and Christian (7%) minorities.
