President Donald Trump initiated an unprecedented $15 billion (50 billion ILS) defamation and libel case against The New York Times on Monday, alleging the publication operated as an improper Democratic Party "mouthpiece" and provided what he termed an illegal "campaign contribution" in the 2024 race against Kamala Harris, Fox News reported.

The president disclosed this legal challenge via Truth Social late Monday, announcing Florida as the filing location, according to Fox News. This action marks his most recent lawsuit against a major media outlet, following substantial settlements from ABC News and CBS News over the past year.

"Today, I have the Great Honor of bringing a $15 Billion Dollar Defamation and Libel Lawsuit against The New York Times, one of the worst and most degenerate newspapers in the History of our Country, becoming a virtual 'mouthpiece' for the Radical Left Democrat Party. I view it as the single largest illegal Campaign contribution, EVER," the president wrote, as reported by Fox News. "Their Endorsement of Kamala Harris was actually put dead center on the front page of The New York Times, something heretofore UNHEARD OF!"

The president alleged the publication engaged in decades of "lying" about him, his business ventures, family members, and the MAGA movement, Fox News stated. Within the lawsuit, Trump claimed he overcame "persistent election interference from the legacy media," led primarily by the Times, Fox News noted.

"I am PROUD to hold this once respected 'rag' responsible, as we are doing with the Fake News Networks such as our successful litigation against George Slopadopoulos/ABC/Disney, and 60 Minutes/CBS/Paramount, who knew that they were falsely 'smearing' me through a highly sophisticated system of document and visual alteration, which was, in effect, a malicious form of defamation, and thus, settled for record amounts. They practiced this longterm INTENT and pattern of abuse, which is both unacceptable and illegal. The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW! The suit is being brought in the Great State of Florida. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Trump added in his message.

"All across our country, Americans from a wide array of backgrounds saw the truth about him and voted accordingly—the same truth that the New York Times refused to recognize as it continued spreading false and defamatory content about President Trump," reads the suit, as cited by Fox News.

The filing occurred at the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Named defendants include the New York Times Company, reporters Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker, and Michael S. Schmidt, along with Penguin Random House, which released "Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father's Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success," authored by Craig and Buettner, Fox News reported.

The newspaper backed Harris in 2024, unsurprisingly given its editorial board's Democratic leanings and absence of Republican presidential endorsements since 1956. Its endorsement began with criticism of Trump rather than praise for Harris, according to Fox News.

"It is hard to imagine a candidate more unworthy to serve as president of the United States than Donald Trump. He has proved himself morally unfit for an office that asks its occupant to put the good of the nation above self-interest," the board wrote, Fox News reported.

The 85-page lawsuit labeled the endorsement "deranged" and claimed "Lucky Loser" was both false and defamatory. In 2023, a judge had dismissed Trump's 2021 lawsuit against the publication over its reporting on his finances and alleged questionable tax maneuvers, according to Fox News.

The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, whose liberal editorial boards intended to endorse Harris in 2024, ultimately declined to endorse after their billionaire owners intervened. These moves angered progressive staff members, triggering resignations and subscriber departures, Fox News noted.

Trump has secured settlements exceeding eight figures from lawsuits against ABC News and CBS News within the past year. ABC agreed in December to contribute $15 million (50 million ILS) to a future presidential museum or foundation, settling Trump's defamation lawsuit. The case arose after anchor George Stephanopoulos repeatedly misstated on air that Trump was liable for rape rather than sexual abuse, Fox News reported.

Trump pursued an "election interference" lawsuit against CBS over its "60 Minutes" interview with Harris in 2024, claiming editing decisions misled viewers. Paramount, CBS's parent company, settled in July for potentially up to $30 million (100 million ILS) before its planned $8 billion (26.7 billion ILS) merger with Skydance Media, according to Fox News.

These settlements prompted criticism from liberals and free speech supporters, claiming media companies capitulated to baseless suits, while Trump supporters argued he was rightfully challenging liberal media outlets, Fox News stated.

Spice Brothers, the Israeli restaurant from chef Lior Lev Sercarz, has earned a spot on The New York Times' "New York's 14 Best New Restaurants of 2024" list.

Lior Lev Sercarz, born in northern Israel, met David Malbequi, the restaurant's former co-owner while working together for the renowned chef Daniel Boulud. They opened Spice Brothers in September 2023, but the two have already split up and Lev Sercarz remained to manage the restaurant.

The Mediterranean restaurant based at St. Marks Place focuses on street food such as shawarma, falafel, and fries, accompined with "smoky and thick harissa," New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells said. Wells recently dibbed chef Lev Sercarz a "spice virtuoso," further praising the place's tahini sauce: "stone-ground in Israel to Mr. Lev Sercarz's specifications, tastes as if the sesame seeds had been toasted right in front of you."

Spice Brothers is among an exciting group of restaurants featured on the New York Times' prestigious list, which also highlights culinary spots like Borgo, an Italian-inspired restaurant with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, and Le Veau d'Or, a long-anticipated revival of a classic New York institution. Other standout newcomers include Café Carmellini, offering sophisticated American fare; and Carnitas Ramírez, a vibrant spot for authentic Mexican street food.

"New York Times" reporter Natasha Frost admitted to leaking details from a chat group of Jewish business owners in Australia, leading to the persecution of those listed by anti-Israel groups and other elements.

The American newspaper announced that it had initiated disciplinary proceedings against the reporter, after she admitted to sharing details from the list with a third party without the editorial board's approval. Frost reportedly downloaded about 900 pages of correspondence from a WhatsApp group created by the local Jewish community following the October 7 massacre.

Many of the 600 and more Jews on said list received death threats, insults, and suffered other forms of harassment, both online and offline. The "New York Post" reported that some of the victims were forced to leave their homes due to ongoing threats against them.

In her defense, Frost claimed that she shared the information with only one person, who presumably decided to pass on the details to others without her knowledge or consent. "The subsequent dissemination and misuse happened entirely without my knowledge or consent. I was shocked by these events, which put me and many others at terrible risk. I deeply regret my decision," the reporter stated.

Joshua Moshe, one of the group members whose details were leaked, told the "New York Post" that his souvenir shop in Melbourne was attacked and vandalized by unknown individuals, with anti-Israel stickers posted at the site. Moshe eventually had to close the business and leave the neighborhood.

Australia's Attorney General, Mark Dreyfus, announced his intention to promote legislation that would prohibit the deliberate distribution of citizens' contact details with the intent to harm them or their reputation. "The increasing use of online platforms to harm people through practices like doxxing, the malicious release of their personal information without their permission, is a deeply disturbing development," the attorney general told Australian media outlets.

"Sorry/Not Sorry," a documentary directed by Cara Mones and Caroline Suh and produced by the New York Times, gives a platform to Louis C.K.'s accusers to share their accounts of his sexual misconduct, exposed in 2017.

The documentary reveals stories of three women, Jen Kirkman, Abby Schachner, and Megan Koester, who spoke out about Louis C.K.'s behavior and the consequences they faced for doing so, presenting new details.

It also explores the consequences Louis C.K. faced, including canceled projects and an estimated $35 million loss, and his controversial comeback nine months later.

The documentary was released to theaters earlier this month. Despite public interest, "Sorry/Not Sorry" no major streaming platforms have not picked it up.

The documentary questions whether powerful men like Louis C.K., who misused their influence to silence victims and minimize their actions, deserve redemption.

In a thought-provoking opinion piece for The New York Times, veteran columnist Thomas L. Friedman called on President Joe Biden to seriously self-reflect about his 2024 presidential campaign. The article, published on July 2, suggested that Biden should consider stepping down from the race to prevent a potential Donald Trump victory.

Friedman advises Biden to ask himself: "What does your worst enemy, Donald Trump, want you to do now? Then do the opposite." The columnist posits that Trump is eager for Biden to remain in the race, anticipating a campaign strategy focused on the President's age and perceived cognitive decline.

"Trump is salivating at the prospect of Biden staying in the presidential race so he can pummel him from now until election day with 15-second television and radio ads – not to mention memes on social media – of Biden's incoherent responses in last week's debate," Friedman writes in The New York Times. He adds that these ads would likely question Biden's capability to handle crises, asking voters: "Is this the man you want answering the phone at 3 a.m. if the Russians or the Chinese or the Iranians attack us?"

The columnist suggests that the Trump campaign believes it can win by making Biden's age the central issue of the election. Friedman notes, "I suspect that the cultists have known all along that the only reason that Trump was leading in many key polls was so many potential Biden voters were not worried about price inflation; they were worried about age inflation – Biden's."

In a bold proposal, Friedman suggests that Biden consider stepping down from the race, likening it to a scene from the musical "Hamilton" where George Washington decides not to run for president again. The columnist argues that such a move would demonstrate true leadership and put the country before self-interest.

"What Trump fears most right now is that Biden will teach the country how to say goodbye," Friedman asserts in The New York Times piece. He contrasts this potential act of statesmanship with Trump's behavior, noting the former president's refusal to concede the 2020 election and his focus on "retribution" rather than a forward-looking plan for the country.

Friedman concludes by urging Biden not to scramble for donor support or challenge the party to remove him. Instead, he suggests that the president should "elevate himself and the party above the whole fray," potentially altering the course of the 2024 election and American politics.

The 'New York Times' internal source code and data were leaked on the 4chan message board, with the breach reportedly occurring in January 2024 due to exposed credentials for GitHub, a cloud-based code platform, according to several reports. The tech news website BleepingComputer reports The New York Times confirmed the details.

The leaked data is claimed to consist of roughly 5,000 repositories and 3.6 million files, including blueprints, Wordle, email marketing, ad reports, and mostly unencrypted data.

Past cyberattacks on media organizations like The New York Times and Disney highlight the growing threat of cybercrime and the need for enhanced security measures.

A hacker associated with Club Penguin breached Disney's servers, leading to the leak of 2.5GB of sensitive corporate data, which was part of a larger breach of Disney's Confluence server.

Some critics said this controversial decision of changes in the verification will lead imposters to spread disinformation on Twitter, Now individuals should pay for a Twitter Blue subscription if they want to keep their verification blue check while organizations must apply for the new 'gold' check.

The platform had said it will start removing verifications checks from 1 April, resulting in organizations, celebrities, and institutions that said they would not pay for the subscription.

Over a span of several months, Iranian agents infiltrated Israeli activists' encrypted messaging apps, sending controversial content and directly messaging members in an apparent effort to stir up trouble and make community members wary of one another, according to a report by Israeli disinformation watchdog group FakeReporter.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

Director Achiya Schatz told The New York Times: "What was so smart and unprecedented about this was the way they moved through small group chats where no one would expect to find an Iranian agent. They really gained people's trust and slipped under the radar of Facebook, Twitter, and all the other tech companies."

It took anywhere from weeks to months before the Iranians' poor grammar and reluctance to meeting in person or speaking via telephone led the Israeli activists to report the Iranian accounts to FakeReporter.

A Shin Bet officer told The New York Times the intelligence agency had opened its own investigation into the disinformation campaign upon learning of it from FakeReporter.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, removed several WhatsApp accounts tied to Iran after The New York Times contacted it about the evidence collected by FakeReporter. Confirming the accounts were tied to Iranian content the company removed earlier this year, a spokeswoman for the tech giant said: "Iranian-based threat actors are some of the more persistent and well-resourced groups attempting to operate online, including on our platform."

While many countries are believed to engage in such campaigns, FakeReporter was the first to demonstrate just how regimes penetrate small online communities as well as how disinformation campaigns operate on encrypted apps.

Similar campaigns could be underway in the United States, American intelligence agencies have warned. Last week, the US Justice Department announced it was blocking access to dozens of websites linked to Iranian disinformation campaigns. A US intelligence official told The New York Times authorities were keeping an eye on private messaging apps for such efforts.

Abraham Foxman, the director emeritus of the Anti-Defamation League, tweeted on May 28 that he was canceling his New York Times subscription because the paper had printed a "blood libel" on its front page.

Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter

The May 28 print edition of the Times featured photos of children who were killed in the recent Israel-Hamas fighting, in both the Gaza Strip and Israel. The headline read: "They Were Just Children." The story itself, which was published online on May 26, highlighted at least 67 Gazan and two Israeli children who died in the fighting.

"Israel blames Hamas for the high civilian death toll in Gaza because the group fires rockets and conducts military operations from civilian areas," the article stated. "Israel's critics cite the death toll as evidence that Israel's strikes were indiscriminate and disproportionate."

It also noted that a couple of the Gazan children "may have been killed when Palestinian militants fired a rocket at Israel that fell short."

"I am canceling my subscription to NYTimes," Foxman tweeted. "I grew up in America on the NYT – I delivered the NYT to my classmates – I learned civics – democracy and all the news 'fit to print' for 65 years, but no more. Today's blood libel of Israel and the Jewish people on the front page is enough."

"Me too," replied Newsweek Deputy Opinion Editor Batya Ungar-Sargon.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean and director of Global Social Action Agenda at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told the Jewish Journal that he too is canceling his subscription to the newspaper, saying the front page was "libelous against the Jewish state and that they [The New York Times] do it amidst a tsunami of antisemitic attacks by pro-Hamas forces across the United States … it's beyond the pale." He added The New York Times has gone from "being the paper of record for the United States of America – the world's greatest democracy –  to becoming the newspaper of record for Hamas."

Others defended the newspaper, with Rabbi Jill Jacobs saying, "Blood libel is about the accusation that Jews kill Christian children for ritual purposes, not about how a sovereign state acts in war."

Jacobs, the executive director of Tr'uah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights, went on to state that "It is not antisemitic to show pictures of Palestinian – and Israeli btw – children killed in the war, both by Israel & by Hamas."

Palestinian writer Yousef Munayyer called Foxman's tweet "a good example of how antisemitism smears are used to silence dissent and police the discourse around Palestine" and added in a subsequent tweet, "For years Palestinians have been reduced to nameless, faceless statistics in the reporting about their killings at the hands of the Israeli military. If the minute they are humanized, even in the simplest way, you start screaming antisemitism then something is wrong with you."

The New York Times did not respond to the Jewish Journal's request for comment.

The Times was criticized for other coverage of the recent Israel-Hamas conflict earlier this week. Ben Shapiro tweeted that for the main image of an op-ed by a Palestinian writer, the newspaper used a map of Israel that is "so bad that MSNBC, which used the image in 2015, had to retract it and admit it was factually incorrect." New York Times Deputy Opinion Editor Patrick Healy said in a statement that the map had been intended merely to "illustrate [the author's] arguments."

Gilead Ini, senior research for the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis, accused The New York Times in an op-ed of burying "readers in an avalanche of anti-Israel guest essays."
