A member of Hamas' military wing, 55-year-old Mohammed Nimer al-Maqadmeh, was killed Monday when a bomb he was apparently assembling accidentally exploded.
Four Palestinians were also wounded in the blast. One of the wounded was reportedly Maqadmeh's young son, who sustained serious injuries.
Palestinian news outlets initially reported that an Israeli drone fired a missile at the building, but shortly thereafter Hamas admitted the explosion was likely the result of an accident.
Several terrorists belonging to Hamas and other Palestinian groups have been killed or injured in accidental blasts in recent years.
Less than two weeks ago, on April 15, Islamic Jihad said four of its members were killed in a "work accident" in the southern Gaza Strip.
In May 2016, an Islamic Jihad operative was killed and two others were wounded in a similar work accident.
In April 2014, three Hamas operatives were killed and five were moderately to seriously wounded in an explosion near Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.
