Britain is concerned about the deaths of protesters on the Gaza Strip-Israel border, Prime Minister Theresa May told visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday.
More than 100 Palestinians have been killed in the weekly border riots that began March 30.
"We have been concerned about the loss of Palestinian lives," May told Netanyahu ahead of talks in London, adding that Britain recognizes Israel's right to self-defense.
May said it is important to alleviate the deteriorating situation and restart peace talks, frozen since 2014, with the aim of reaching a two-state solution to the conflict.
Netanyahu said responsibility for the violence lies with Hamas, the Islamist terrorist group that rules the Gaza Strip.
"I think the problems there are rooted in the fundamental goal of Hamas to destroy Israel. We are not witnessing peaceful protests," he said.
"We are doing everything we can to both minimize casualties and at the same time protect Israeli lives."
