Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps will soon see several "surprising" weapon systems become operational, the country's semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted IRGC Commander Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami as saying.
"In the near future, we'll witness the coming into operation of surprising systems," he said, stressing that the attempts by the US to extend the UN arms embargo on Iran "would not affect our defense power at all."

Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony held in Tehran to unveil new military equipment, Salami said that the IRGC "has not relied on foreigners to manufacture any weapon. ... Iranian scientists have stepped in to fulfill the country's defense needs with domestic capabilities."
He further praised the IRGC's research and development effort, crediting them for manufacturing "a wide range of weapons, increasing the destructive power of weaponry, boosting their accuracy, making smaller arms, and automating weapons," Tasnim reported.
Also on Saturday, the commander of the Quds Force, Iran's extraterritorial black-ops arm, made a surprise visit to eastern Syria.
Brig. Gen. Esmail Ghaani replaced Qassem Soleimani, Iran's most powerful military commander, who directed its allied militia in conflicts across the Middle East before he was killed by a US missile strike at Baghdad airport on January.
Tasnim reported Ghaani had visited Abu Kamal, a Syrian town on the border with Iraq, in the past few days. It later deleted the report without explanation. Other Iranian news media made no mention of the visit.
It quoted Ghaani as describing Islamic State fighters as agents of Israel and the United States, a common accusation by Iran.
