The so-called coronavirus cabinet on Thursday was slated to debate revising Israel's existing strategy from the second coronavirus lockdown.

According to the Health Ministry, 688 new coronavirus cases were diagnosed on Wednesday. Some 464 patients are currently in serious condition, with 199 intubated.

The ministry said that so far, 2,494 Israelis have succumbed to the disease.

Earlier in the day, the government held a telephone vote and pushed the extension of the state of emergency declared over the pandemic for another 60 days, meaning it will not stretch until Jan. 3, 2021.

The decision is pending the approval by the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee.

The later meeting is expected to see ministers debate reopening places of worship and stores, as well as mapping out the resumption of school for children in first through fourth grade to school, starting on Sunday.

The plan is said to combine in-class studies with distance learning. It will see schoolchildren in grades one through four learn four days a week in capsules of no more than 20 students.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the outline could be re-evaluated over the next two weeks.

Wednesday saw Health Minister Yuli Edelstein and Finance Minister Israel Katz lock horns over over whether street-based retailers would be able to reopen on Sunday.

Katz supports the move while Edelstein insists on holding off on the move.

The decision is also likely to affect synagogue services.
