Israel surpasses PM's goal of vaccinating 150,000 people a day

Noting 152,000 Israelis vaccinated on Tuesday, Health Minister says, "This is how we defeat a pandemic!" Infection rate now stands at 5.7%. One out of every 132 Haredim aged 65 and over has died of COVID-19, Health Ministry data finds.

Israel has vaccinated 152,000 people over the last 24 hours, surpassing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's goal of vaccinating 150,000 every day.

In a post to his Twitter account, Wednesday, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said, "On the path to 1 million vaccinated! 152,000 vaccinated as of yesterday, close to 650,000 total. This is how we defeat a pandemic!"

On Tuesday, Israel confirmed 5,583 new cases of the virus. According to Health Ministry data, 99,126 tested for COVID-19, for an infection rate of 5.7%, a rate not seen since October 6.

Israel has 40,929 active cases of the virus. There are 609 people in serious condition, 154 of whom are on ventilators. Israel has recorded 414,447 cases of the virus. So far, 3292 people have died.

According to Health Ministry data released on Tuesday, one out of every 132 ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel aged 65 and over has died of COVID-19, according to Health Ministry data.

At 0.75%, the death rate among the sector was significantly higher than that of the secular population, which at 0.2%, saw one out of every 475 people die of the virus.

That puts the death toll among Haredi adults over 65 at 3.6 times that of the general Israeli population.

In total, 303 ultra-orthodox adults over 65 died of the coronavirus, and 2,014 adults over 65 in the general population have died of the disease.
