United States Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rebuked President Joe Biden over his statement supporting Israel's right to defend itself amid escalating violence with Hamas, accusing the president of "siding with occupation."

"My expectation and hope is that this will be closing down sooner than later, but Israel has a right to defend itself when you have thousands of rockets flying into your territory," Biden said on Wednesday.
The congresswoman tweeted that the president's "blanket" statements do not acknowledge what, she claims, precipitated this cycle of violence, namely tensions on the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem and the Sheikh Jarrah dispute.
Ocasio-Cortez is one of a number of progressive Democrats who have been vocal in their criticism of Israel during the recent wave of violence in the region.
Fellow "Squad" member Representative Ilhan Omar also slammed Biden's support for Israel, saying that the president is also "siding with an oppressive occupation."
