US President Joe Biden has nominated Amy Gutmann, president of the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, as ambassador to Germany, a role vacant for a year following Donald Trump's presidency.

"The US side has officially informed the German government of this designation," German government officials said, confirming information from Der Spiegel magazine.
Gutmann, 71, whose father fled Hitler's Germany in 1934 with his family, would be the first woman to hold the German ambassadorial post.
In accordance with the protocol, her appointment will have to be approved by the US Senate and by the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
