Recent months have seen thousands of Israelis receive text messages informing them that they must pay a fee to release items they had ordered online from overseas vendors from customs.
The texts included a link to a payment form that was made to look as if it was part of the Israel Post website.
The fee for each "package" was 300 shekels ($95), the police said. He then converted the payment into cryptocurrency to cover his tracks.
